PS3 Eyetoy devs say Xbox 360 cam is unreliable
With the success of Sony’s Eyetoy, Microsoft released its own version of the device a few years back. As Microsoft gears up to promote its second game to makes use of the device, the Eyetoy devs at Sony, recently indicated that the technology Microsoft is using for the Xbox Live Vision cam is unreliable.
With Nintendo leading the pack in the casual market, it wasn’t all that surprising when Sony and Microsoft started shifting gears by focusing more on the casual market this generation. Last generation Sony was able to successfully cater to the casual and hardcore with the PS2. However, with the PS3, Sony has been focusing more on hardcore titles such as Resistance Fall of Man and Killzone 2.
The Eyetoy has been one of Sony’s most successful peripherals, selling over 10.5 million units to date just in the PAL territories alone. The Eyetoy: Play series have also been extremely successful. After eyeing the success of the Eyetoy, Microsoft decided to bring its own version of the peripheral with the Xbox Live Vision cam. However, many of our readers may not be familiar with the peripheral due to the lack of games for it.
In a candid interview with GI.biz, Sandy Spangler, designer for Sony’s EyeToy, indicated that she was surprised at how little Microsoft supported the device. She said, “It’s surprising – the camera came out a while ago and they came out with the one download game, Totem Ball, and then that was it.”
When asked what she thought about the competition, referring to Microsoft’s You’re In the Movies, she said, “I think that [with You're In the Movies] they’re probably going to have some technical difficulties to wrestle with.”
“They’re using some technical elements that are not reliable, at least not according to our experience. They’re using background subtraction to put you in the movie, and it’s not very robust, that’s why we haven’t done it in any of our games. If the white shifts in the room or something, it can stop working… Good luck to them.”
There is only one way to find out how reliable the technology is, and that is by trying it with Your’re in the Movies. We will make sure to follow up if indeed there are reliability issues with the cam and the game.

It took Sony 5 years to sell as many eye toys as Nintendo sold Wii Fit in less than 1. Even on the mighty PS2.

yet wii fit ripped off eye toy kinetic.

The phrase “unreliable” pretty much sums up everything about the 360. It would not surprise me at all that M$ knew the technology did not function properly, but rushed it to the market anyway at the expense of the consumer…
Amazon had a deal were they were selling the PS3 eye for $20, so I picked one up. It’s cool to use for the chat feature and to fool around with in general. I hope they eventually integrate it into Home.

Me too: So what’s your point? Do sales mean that Wii fit is worth playing? Or does it show that most people are mindless sheep?

Here is the problem with this story. “Sony Developers” have a problem with the camera. They don’t even make games for the 360 so why are they talking about a camera they don’t even use. If it was Third Party developers saying this then there would be some merit to this comment. They just jelous of Your in the Movies because Microsoft actually did something usefull with it. Now Totem Ball was not the only game to use the camera. A Tom Clancy game allowed you to take your picture and use your head on the character. There are racing games that use the feature to show your oponient when they loose a race. You can use the camera to scan barcodes instead of inputting codes. Your can use the camera to place your Pic as your Gamertag. Really this is just another stupid article from Blorge.

Oh, You can also use the camera to chat with your friends as well.

I also believe Uno uses the camera as well.

CAD – It’s important to remmeber this is coming from the sony camp.
the same camp that was caught editing wikipedia with false halo 3 information pre launch. the same camp that promises, never delivers, and then talks about “potential”. the same camp that lost about 90% of it’s ps2 userbase. the same camp that’s hemorraging money.
they’re desperate.

You guys are truly retarded sometimes. Everything Sandy says is true. Shes surprised how little MS has supported it because they simply haven’t. Shes also been through the difficulties of what MS is trying to do with “in the movies” ….You haven’t.
Rainbox Six Vegas (third party supported it/feature also on ps3)
Burnout Paradise (third party/feature was also on ps3).
Eye of Judgement scans bar codes.
Eyetoy also works with chat.
No Uno though.
Truth be told…Sony is supporting their eye toy while MS is hardly doing anything.

Nicely put phranctoast. All of the applications and games also neatly grouped together on the Playstation Store. The free video editing software (name?) is also nice.
kev – you mentioned nothing about either camera, just disjointed xbot propaganda.

The jig’s up, Bourne! We’ve been had!

I guess that is why I don’t own one and of all my friends only 2 of us have the Camera. Truth be told is that the Camera really is not a significant part of gaming. It’s a nice gimic but truly unnessary.

I totally agree that the camera is not in anyway essential to gamming. It does add a lot to the chat feature though. Also some of the interactive art that the PS3 has is very cool to leave on when company is over. All in all, it is a nice little add-on.

Im gonna sit in the nude and play Burnout with my camera on… when some asshole “takedowns” me (not sexually)… he’ll get a nice crotch shot..
thatll teach you perverts…
I dont see the point of buying a camera for my console… I have one in my laptop… another in my cell phone… Id rather spend the money on old hidden gems… so many to list…

barnabe – i realize you ps3 fans aren’t very quick (otherwise you wouldn’t be ps3 fans), so i’ll dumb it down for you.
what people from sony’s camp should NEVER, repeat NEVER, be taken as a fact.
phranctoast – you forgot xbox live arcade titles such as the many card games, tile games, etc that support the 360’s camera…. silly fanboys…
