Final Fantasy devs will have issues with Xbox 360 port

November 29, 2008

Final Fantasy devs will have issues Xbox 360 port During the last E3, Square Enix revealed that Final Fantasy XIII will be coming out on the Xbox 360. This created quite a commotion with PS3 fans.  Recently the studio devs for Square Enix reassured PS3 fans that the company is in no way favoring one console over another and also that the PS3 version will not suffer due to the Xbox 360 port.

Final Fantasy XIII may be the most highly anticipated game of this generation. The franchise has sold quite a bit during the past 21 years. With that being said, the franchise has remained a Playstation exclusive for the most part of the last 14 years.

Understandably, PS3 fans were quite disappointed when Square Enix announced plans to release the latest entry in the franchise on the Xbox 360 during E3. Many fans were worried that the quality of the game would suffer from the developers catering to the lowest denominator.

Other developers such as Id Software have already indicated that there will be a difference in quality between Rage on the Xbox 360 and PS3 due to the Blu-ray format.

According to Kilzo, in an interview with Square Enix Corporate Director Shinji Hashimoto and series Producer Yoshinori Kitase, they reassure fans that there is no reason for such concern.

Kitase said:

I’d like to add… I think that maybe because it’s going multiplatform that some fans are worried about the game’s scope being reduced to fit onto both consoles. The fact is, the PS3 version is what’s in development right now, and the team is working to specialise that version to the very best of the PS3′s abilities. After that, we’ll do the 360 port and optimize it to that particular hardware. There will be no decrease in quality as a result of the game appearing across two platforms.

So, it appears that the studio has been diligently working on the PS3 version blindly without really thinking about the Xbox 360 version until later. With recent titles like Last Remnant being on two discs, it really makes one wonder how many discs Final Fantasy XIII will be on.

Honestly, I believe Square Enix will have some difficulty when it is time to port the game over to the Xbox 360. This is in no way knocking on one console versus another, but developers need to take an overall approach when developing games, similarly to EA.

From what the Square Enix heads said during the press conference at E3, the decision to create an Xbox 360 port of Final Fantasy XIII, was made near the end of production of the PS3 version. This is the type of maverick development practice that blatantly spells trouble.

Developers should take the time to ensure that their work is equally satisfactory on all platforms, instead of hot-dogging it.  I predict that the game will get delayed even further than anticipated. We will just have to find out later this year if my prediction comes to pass.

Ohhh what do I say to this load of crap journalism that forever spews from Mike full of crap Ferro mouth. I really don’t have the effort right now to bother with you. Lets just remind you of the many multiplats that are better on the 360 along with Gears of War 1 & 2 which has the best graphics so far not limited to 720P and with the ability download the disks to the HD your bluray argument is out the door so lets just kill that noise and yeah whatever because I’m just tired of Mikeology.

  2. Dirk:

    @CAD,

You seem a bit defensive there lol ;)
I don’t think he was trying to dis the Xbox 360, seems like he is giving Square Enix flack about their development practice.

Ya need to take them Xbot fanboy goggles off. When you the article does your brain skip over everything except the parts about “multiple discs” “id software, Rage…”?

Nobody cares if its on multiple discs, its a fact of life, Blu-ray holds more DVDs dont, nobody is talking trash about one console vs another.

The fact that Square Enix is doing development in such an unorthadox way, the concern seems to be that the game will suffer on both platforms because of this. I agree, these things should be planned out from the begining, not near the end of the project.

Anyway, great article Mike. Its nice to be able to come here for news that isn’t covered to death everywhere else, along with a strong dose of oppinion, which many sites seem to lack these days.

Where exactly is it quoted that devs will have problems porting the game? This is just another post where FERRO is making shit up.

@ Dirk, this is not news, this is biased speculation and bullshitting.

  4. Royzy:

    Shouldn’t the headline be:

‘Ferro Says devs will have issues with Xbox 360 port’

At least then I don’t have to actually click the link, to find out that Lord Ferro said so.

Gamer.Blorge equals highly opinionated flame war bait posts, NOT news guys. It’s becoming more and more obvious that “writers” like appear here are more interested in posting flame enticing headlines with little to no factual substabce behind the posts. Most of what we read in ANY of the Blorge’s any more is just opinionated fluff posts about “news” that was already obtainable elsewhere.

Only reason to come to Blorge any more is when you’re bored and want to read the lastest flame war in the comments….

  6. Matt:

I find it strange how the commentors are talking about flame bait articles and Mike’s favoritism for the PS3 (except Dirk), yet the article clearly seems to be about the development of the game, not the consoles.

In fact, the article holds a quote that says FF13 will be made for both consoles with their strengths in mind. Did the MS loyalists miss the fact that it means that the 360 version will be better than the PS3 version in some ways, too?

Then Mike says, “Developers should take the time to ensure that their work is equally satisfactory on all platforms, instead of hot-dogging it.”

That sure makes it seem like its about DEVELOPERS. In fact, if you want to get picky, this would be more about Sony than MS, since Sony has more developers, but, of course, since the “hot-dogging” is making a game as good as it can be on all consoles involved, it could only apply to multiplatform games and developers.

Now that we can leave the blind fanboyism behind (except Ivan, since he will no doubt post that the PS3 version will be better, but may actually get the point better than some of the previous posters, at least), I disagree with Mike. While I do think it could lead to more delays than most people would like, if the end result is a better game for both sides, a few delays would be worth it.

A delayed game is only delayed for a little while, but a bad game is bad forever. I have spoken out against DLC for quite some time, particularly the gimping of a game on purpose for more profit. Making the game for the lowest common denominator all around is gimping a game for money, too.

It would have been better if it could have been planned from early on, but its good to see a developer giving a game their all, in a time that games need patches upon release and most developers just don’t seem to care about quality. Strangely enough, its comming from the developer of a very hyped game, with a very long history, and a very strong following, which are the three things that seem normally to lead developers to neglect quality.

I honestly do not have a problem with the game coming to the 360. If they have to make the 360 version different, or ship it on 4 disks I don’t mind, just DO NOT delay the PS3 version as a result. If they can get both versions ready at the same time, I’ll be happy.

  8. Barnabe Jones:

(Thinking)… The Last Reminate is a perfect example actually. The PS3 version was taking longer due to the use of the Unreal III engine, so as a result the PS3 version has been delayed. Now we should assume if the 360 version takes a little longer to get ready, Square would delay that version as a result. Unfortunately since M$ has dumped a ton of money on Square to make this a simultaneous release, PS3 owners will get screwed into waiting as a result. That’s my main issue with this whole thing. Square Enix used to be one of the most consistent developers out there, but it seems like they will whore themselves out to the highest bidder.

  9. phranctoast:

    completely agree BJ.
They said that they would finish the ps3 version and that just work on the translating while porting the 360. So translating and porting from ps3 to 360 will take the same time as simply translating for the ps3. I find that Bullshit. They should be translating as they go anyway.
No need to hold it up on the ps3.

  10. Barnabe Jones:

Yeah, unfortunately this isn’t a good candidate for importing either. The story, text, and dialog are usually center stage in RPGs… if only I could speak Japanese. So now I am stuck waiting for the translation AND the 360 port. great.

  11. The Future of Sega:

Final Fantasy???? HA! I’ve had more fun playing with dog terds! I’d rather rub a cactus and eat deer balls than to play that load of crap :P

  12. The Future of Sega:

What the???? You guys have EDITED my words!!! THAT IS NOT COOL!!!! I’d rather get banned than to be EDIFIED!!!

Oh and by the way I did not say “rub” a cactus. I said F$#^ a cactus :P
