PS3 and Xbox battle hard, but Sony & Microsoft are ignoring the Wii
Microsoft spent today talking about how the Xbox 360 had roundly beaten the PS3 in terms of sales on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the Thanksgiving weekend in between. But there seemed to be someone missing at the party, with no mention of a certain Japanese company by the name of Nintendo, and its bestselling console, the Wii. In fact, there never is.
Microsoft’s newly published press release claims the Xbox 360 outsold the Playstation 3 by a margin of 3 to 1 over the holiday weekend. This meant the console saw a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 sales on Black Friday 2007. Mike is looking at these figures more closely, but I want to focus instead on a point raised by Don Reisinger over at CNET.
In an intelligent article, as they always are, Reisinger notes the lack of any mention of the Nintendo Wii in the Microsoft gloating session. Xbox 360 sales over the PS3 are mentioned a couple of times, including those from over the Thanksgiving weekend, and the battle currently raging between the two consoles for superiority in Europe. But the Wii, and Nintendo itself, never enters the conversation.
Does this mean Microsoft doesn’t consider the Wii as a competitor? If not, why not? It could be that the Wii is so far ahead of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that the rival companies can’t stand to even think about the Wii without feeling nauseous at its phenomenal success rate. Especially as the Wii is an underpowered last-gen console that has won the war through innovation rather than power.
Or maybe Microsoft just don’t consider the Wii in the same league as the Xbox 360? Which would be bizarre thinking on the part of Microsoft seeing as though the Wii has outsold the Xbox 360 by quite a margin already. And Sony isn’t adverse to this way of thinking either, often referring in the past to the great battle between the PS3 and Xbox 360 this generation, and seeming to completely ignore the Wii’s existence.
But lest we forget, while the Xbox 360 and PS3 did fairly well on Black Friday, it’s the Wii that has proved to be the big winner yet again. The Nintendo console won the sales battle in the video games department on Amazon, and was the most searched-for item on eBay too. Second was Wii Fit.
It seems that Sony and Microsoft only have eyes for each other these days, whether out of jealousy or blinkered vision blinding them to the fact that the Wii is carrying on its rise to the top. Anyone who still doubted that the Wii had won this console generation can now stop doubting the facts. If Sony and Microsoft have settled on fighting for second place, you know it’s all over.

MS has just accepted second place.
When the sales figures were closer they used to mention to wii, then as the wii pulled ahead they stopped talking it up. Sony has done it on the months they outsold the ps3.
You don’t say how awesome you’re doing and then mention that you’re getting ass fucked by the big N.

2nd place in conslole but #1 in Game sales. So what is more important. Game Sales! Who cares about the Wii. Everyone I know who has it doesn’t even play it.
December 3rd, 2008
Yeah, the Wii seems to collect dust wherever I see it too.
#1 in game sales is an awesome achievement, seeing that they were spanked last gen.
December 3rd, 2008
mmm hmm… lotsa game sales… so… now that the 360 cant sell as much units as the Wii… LETS ALL FOCUS ON TEH GAMES!!!!
also… why do you care about the game sales?? you makin a cut or what???
December 3rd, 2008
It’s their way of trying to make 360 no1
December 3rd, 2008
I am sure if it was Sony as #1 in software sales it you would be singing a different tune.
Just face it, you backed the wrong (expensive) horse.
December 3rd, 2008
Whenever I see you write that wrong horse BS I think about all the exclusives you can’t get that are only on the ps3, and then I think about all the 360 ones I can get because they are also available on the PC.
Sorry buddy….but if you want to play certain games you have absolutely no choice but to get a ps3 where I don’t have that same concern.
keep jacking yourself off while talking about console sales/software sales (two things that are only exist for you so you could twist your nipples), I’ll be playing the 360’s so called exclusives anyway.
Left 4 dead….Mass effect…Biohazard…Gears 1 & 2 soon… Alan Wake when it comes out. Splinter cell games.
Lets face it… The ps3 is the only system with true exclusives!

harry sachz:
Wow you such an embarrassment. Xbox 360 isn’t the right horse bitch LoL idiot. Stop posting stupid shit. We all know PLAYSTATION3 is a must have system.
December 3rd, 2008
Ah Dave. Once again you and Don feel the need to spew idiocy onto the web. Wii has NEVER been the competition for either PS3 or X360. Stop writing stupid articles like this just to fluff your writing fees.

Anyway you want to look at it the Wii offers nothing more then a gimic and games. No Memory, Crap Online, No media playabillity what so ever and no High-Def games it should be compared to the PS2 and the Original Xox. 360 and the PS3 are of a much higher class.
December 3rd, 2008
fact is davep, you’ve already stated ms/sony and wii are different markets. ms know sony is their main hd competitor..not ninty…
gawd…
gaming noobs + Internet = bad idea.
December 3rd, 2008
phractoast – the difference between harry and you is that harry actually uses data that is used to gauge success…whereas you use “just wait for the exclusives” argument which falls flat as mgs4 and lbp has proven…
December 3rd, 2008
phranc – you forgot forza… an 360 exclusive that game reviewers have crowned the new king of console sims over the GT series…
December 3rd, 2008
@Cad – The wii comes with more storage than the 360 arcade
December 3rd, 2008
@kev.
reading is obviously difficult for you.
I never said wait for such and such exclusive. Where do you see that? Do you just skim paragraphs and guess what people write, then create your response based on that.
For the short bus riders…..I pointed out how there are barely any AAA 360 exclusives that don’t also appear on the PC.
oh and btw, MGS and LBP are two of the highest rated games that came out this year. GT5 still has yet to come out.
How do sales effect you rather than provided internet fodder bullet points? I’m sure you don’t have stock in MS. The time of 3rd party exclusives are over. Companies have to pay through the nose for them.
December 3rd, 2008
I guess I’ll just keep repeating myself over and over and over for this entire console generation:
“Lamborghini and Ferrari are not competing with Toyota.”
@ Kev: Hilarious how you say that sales numbers are “data that is used to gauge success” and then IN THE VERY NEXT POST proclaim Forza as “the new king of console sims over the GT series” when it has not sold nearly as well as Gran Turismo. Forza 2 can’t even break 5 million units.

this is what I dont get… if EVERYONE is the world… unanimously voted Forza 2 to be the GREATEST GAME EVER!! and gave the developer a billion dollars… so what?? what do I get out of it??
the PS2 was “TEH SYSTEM” a coupla years ago… what did it do to me??? Id still wouldve bought an xbox if I had the money… just like I would still buy GT 5 when it comes out… if you love your console that much… then thats great… play it… instead of bitching about the competition in a website…
December 3rd, 2008
arvis – it’s funny yuou have to use the 5 total iterations of GT games sales to compare against the 2 for Forza…
it’s not sales, noob…
sims are about realism. Forza has it. GT does not.
December 3rd, 2008
phranc – this is you, “The ps3 is the only system with true exclusives!”
i was simply pointing out (again) that you are continously WRONG.
December 3rd, 2008
sorry phranctoast, but you did indeed back the wrong horse. Figures don’t lie!
Ivan, if it is a ‘must have’, then why is it coming dead last with the gap widening? Idiot.
December 3rd, 2008
Do I need to say anything? I think these guys covered it.
December 3rd, 2008
SW 360 arcade come with 256MB internal and 256 External. Seems Equal to me. Then it’s an extra memory via SD card for the Wii and Memory card for the 360. That cost I’m not sure. But I would think that the SD Card may be better price wise. But the 360 Acrade is cheaper then the Wii.
December 4th, 2008
Fair enuff CAD , didn’t realize you got that 256mb external too
I’m happy with my pro model tho
Wii storage sucks balls tho CAD, SD card is fine, but for stuff like WiiWare and downloaded games – you can’t use it. I wish they would just man up and either allow you to copy wiiware to sd cards or use generic USB harddrives (protection against piracy for wiiware at this point is moot because its already been busted). Ahh how I hate nintendo sometimes…

@kev.
Answer me this question..
Does a great majority of the AAA 360 exclusives also appear on the PC?
@harry.
Thanks for not making reference to anything I pointed out. Same kev question applies to you.
December 4th, 2008
phranctoast – everyone, including the fanboy authors at gamerblorge knows pc and console gaming are two completely different gaming with two very different pricing models. heck why stop there? why not include cell phone games…?
geez….you guys are really desperate if you have to reach across the aisle to pc gaming to try to remove exclusives. console exclusves are exactly that; EXCLUSIVE.
a simple fact that you ps3 fanboys like to ignore
December 4th, 2008
kev
Call it whatever you want to. A lot of people also have PC’s anyway.
The simple fact remains.
When a AAA title comes along for the 360 that I must have, I can simply buy it for the PC or wait for it to become available on the PC. (They also usually get the better of two versions)
Exclusive games on the PS3 do not appear on the PC forcing anyone to own a PS3 in order to play those games.
December 4th, 2008
PHRANC – yes..many people have pc..very few have the right hardware to run the latest games as it’s hugely expensive to upgrade your stock pc to do so..
k/b and mouse =/= controller
it’s funny wathcing you clowns spin it to try to convince people pc and consoles are the same thing.
question: do mass consumers see it that way? of course not. only you miopic fanboys who refuse to see reality….
December 4th, 2008
KB&M is a lot better in so many ways, but I also have a 360 controller for mine (How I know anything about the controller enough to voice an opinion on it)
December 4th, 2008
kev did you suddenly forget that Crysis runs on a $900 PC?? jee I wonder if Gears and Halo would run on that PC??? or Mass Effect?? or Bioshock???
Im not trying to steal the thunder of the 360… we arent trying to gang up on you and beat up your precious console (atleast Im not)… just trying to show you… an Exclusive.. means on ONE PLATFORM ONLY!!!! the PC is a platform… sure I wouldnt buy halo 3 on the pc if I had a 360… cus LIVE would be more fun… but for single player campaign… it would be the same…
so calm down… cus Halo 2 and gears are not exclusives… and yes… there are several good cell phone games… I have one of them… Mega man 3… up urs bitch…
also splinter cell… prince of persia… assassins creed… jee suddenly cell phone games dont look so sucky anymore…
December 5th, 2008
dwh – tell it to the mass consumers who DON’T see pc and console as the same…. only you moronic “hardcore” fanboys do……
and the entire world knows that hardcore gamers are the exception to the rule…kinda like the the D&D losers sitting in their basements for years….

So we’re back to judging people based on thier hobbies?
Its like high school!
