Xbox outsells PS3 2:1 while PS3 has better exclusive lineup
Microsoft recently announced that according to internal estimates, the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 two to one in the U.S. for the month of November. If this is true, then that is definitely an amazing feat for Microsoft. However, Sony fanboys don’t have to fret as according to a recent head-to-head study by IGN AU, it seems that the PS3 had the better exclusive lineup for 2008.
There is more than enough good news to go around for everyone. To quell the fanboys I am bringing a piece of good news for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3.
Microsoft’s congenial Aaron Greenberg recently announced that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by 2:1 in November. That is big news considering the state of the economy as it is currently. Greenberg also took some more jabs at the PS3 by referencing the competitor, stating that the PS3 costs too much. He gives himself and Microsoft a nice pat on the back by complementing on the decision to market the Xbox 360 Arcade for $199.
He also indicated that people won’t buy the PS3 due to the state of the economy because of its price tag. He said, “They are a premium priced product in a tough economic time. They have a tough position to try and sell a product.”
I definitely agree that it will be a tough holiday for Sony as the PS3 has remained $399 for two years now. Most consumers are tightening their belts in anticipation of the recession.
Sony needs to get on the ball and drop the price if the company wants to compete with the Xbox 360. It really is surprising how the times have changed when considering that I originally purchased the PS3 for $600 and my Xbox 360 Elite for around $500.
Recently IGN AU reached into its reservoir to do a head-to-head comparison of which console had the best exclusive lineup for 2008. The results indicate that the PS3 had a better lineup this year than the Xbox 360. I have to agree with IGN here. In 2007 the Xbox 360 had the better exclusive lineup with games like Bioshock and Mass Effect. However, this year the PS3 takes the cake with great games such as Metal Gear 4, LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2.
If you watch Gametrailer’s Invisible Wall, Shane Satterfield the Editor in Chief of Spike TV and Gametrailers, made a very compelling argument as to why the PS3 had a better game lineup for 2008 as well. Even though these claims are made on a review score basis, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Xbox 360 had a horrid game lineup. The Xbox 360 also had a great lineup with Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 this year; the PS3 just managed to nudge it out by a bit.
I wonder what console will have the killer lineup in 2009 – will it be the year of the Xbox 360 or the PS3? Also, what highly anticipated games are you looking forward to in 2009? Make sure to catch the 2008 Video Game Awards show this Sunday on Spike TV, presented by Gametrailers. For those who do not have access to Spike TV, don’t worry as I will put up the winners along with my take on the results here on Gamer.Blorge.

As I said in another thread, I read on “other” websites that the ps3 still has a 300,000 unit lead over the 360 in PAL territories and thats with a 18 month head start for the 360. Looks like NA is the only place were 360 has sold more consoles. But I suppose to very small amount of people here, the NA stats are the only stats that count and “THE REST OF THE WORLD” does not exist…….. lol

white knight and gt 5… if they come out in 09… it would be fun… these games are serious contenders…
Im more interested in the DC Universe MMO… looks cool…
and I hope Killzone 2 sells by millions… it could never compete with Halo 3 and Gears… but it would keep me from spending money on getting a 360 as soon as I can…
from the videos that Ive seen… it kinda looks like Killzone 2 is like the successor of Cod 4… Im not comparing… but that is what a cod game would look like if it was made by infinity ward and set in the future…

Spideydog,
According to VGChartz, 360 has been outselling PS3 in England (ahead by 1.2 million) and our neck of the woods, Australia (ahead by 175,000) and is ahead in PAL territories by over a million. NA is not the only place that 360 is outselling the PS3.
Oh yeah, do you feel that? Swallow it, swallow all of it or you don’t get your cash.

Harry,
That is the same site that xbots on this site hated (and stated numerously, i might add) because of flawed stats gathering etc etc. But now it’s ok site for real stats….. lol
I may be able to add to those stats tomorrow night with a 360 pro purchase. By the way, no-one answered my question on being able to use a mouse with the 360….i take that the answer is no then ?? Otherwise there would have been a flurry of Yes’s from the xbot camp !!

I think it’s interesting how they decided to not count PC titles that were only on the 360, yet not count the PC as a platform, especially when most people can’t play those games on the PC they presently own without a serious upgrade or purchasing a new computer entirely.
So, here is a another take from MetaCritic for overall games, not just exclusives from this year, for those who may be interested in buying a new console:
PS3 reviewed at 90 or above: 10
XBox 360 90 or above: 18
December 11th, 2008
Killzone 2
God Of War 3
FF13 (although may show up on the 360)
and some others that I can’t recall due to beer.
The media driven economy has no baring on this at all.

@ Spidey,
I haven’t tried, so i’ll say that’s a no. And re VG Chartz, it may not be accurate, but it’s all we have.
@ DaBot…. MAY??? Have you been living under a rock? It’s been confirmed!
December 11th, 2008
I’ll go out on a limb and say that the ps3 will have the better lineup in 09′….
-killzone2
-God of War 3
-inFamous
-fat princess-psn
-Uncharted 2-
-Twisted metal
-mag
-quantum theory
-agency
-eyepet
While the 360 has it’s next halo game coming out (and the rts) the only thing that has me slightly interested is the ninja blade(may have name wrong) game. Alan wake does not have me convinced. Not to sure how halo wars will pan out switching to rts. Rts games typically suck for consoles. Maybe they can take a tip from tom clancy and put in voice control.
December 11th, 2008
according to. Vgchartz LBP is outselling R2 and almost has a million sales. Not bad for a original IP and not just a sequel. R1 has sold over 3 million so we could expect similar if not better for the sequel as more people now own the ps3 (I still haven’t bought it as Christmas is around the corner).
December 11th, 2008
I think the agency has been delayed or cancelled… havent heard of quantum theory and MAG hasnt been announced for a release date yet… and no word of twisted metal… I think you were thinking of the “secret” project David Jaffe has been working on….
December 11th, 2008
Not sure if Agency is delayed, but the rumor that it was canceled was shot down. Quantum theory is a Gears of War looking third person shooter from Tecmo (said to be exclusive). MAG doesn’t have a date but its done by Zipper (SOCOM) and since they had nothing to do as they were not responsible for Confrontation I’d bet on seeing that in 09′.
The Secret Project from Jaffe (Eat Sleep Play) was all but confirmed as Twisted Metal for the PS3 in the last ps2 twisted metal game (head on).

Well, little is your word, better you confirm through SQUARE enixsoftbunchof whateva! you know what I mean? give me official word, just because I’m under a rock, doesn’t mean I still can’t learn!
All in all, is that what you are looking forward too? a game that will be 1 disc on the PS3 and perhaps 2 on the Xbox?
Sure it brings up old tales of the PS1 and FF7 on 3 discs, but for gods sake, that was the PS1, the number one…..I hope you enjoy scratching 3 discs, perhaps 4….anywhoz, PS3 wins.

XBox360 is up for another of Microsoft’s notorious Fire Sales. Exactly the same fate HD-DVD met with. This is a strategic price cut that is ment to dump merchandise in order to make room for a new model.
A new HD version of XBox will be released Q4 2009 – Q1 2010, fully equipped with Blu-ray player and larger processor.
Make no mistakes about it; this is 100% going to happen. Announcement will be this summer @ CES.

-White Knight Chronicles (Level 5 game)
-New game from Team ICO.(they produce gems)
-Heavy Rain
-Yakuza 3
-Final Fantasy 13 vs (maybe 2010)
-Demon Souls (from software-action rpg)
-Wardevil (we’ll have to wait and see on this one)
-LA Noir (thought it was exclusive. not so sure anymore.
I recall Sony having an exclusive deal with Rockstar. Not sure which game it was for though.

Hmmm what do i care more about, how the console is selling… or better games i can play for the next year… tough question that, i guess if you care about sales and helping out microsoft then you best buy a 360, if you enjoy gaming go for a PS3. I can’t wait for KZ2, GOW3 and not to mention GT:P. Enjoy Alan Wake Hairy *scoff*
December 11th, 2008
I think it would be safe to say all gamers care about is the console they bought, or their favorite one (if they “OA3″), for whatever reason(s). The rest of the reasons they come up with to defend their choice, much like religions, in a way.
For those who haven’t yet purchased a present gen console, they are most likely to go with the one that suits their needs best, and neither one of the three is going to die out any time soon or fail spectacularly.
What fanboys often fail to mention is the 50+ some odd titles that will be good enough to play and enjoy on either of the consoles, and are multi-platform. You know, the one’s that will be more than enough to keep them busy until the next 50+ come around?
And that is what the trend continues to move towards, like it or not. Exclusives are a dying breed. So which console actually will give you the widest breadth of quality games multi-platform or exclusive, now or in the near foreseeable future?
Another look at Metacritic review averages of games rated at 85 or above says:
PS3: 39
360: 55
Total games for release next year (IGN US):
360: 232
PS3: 203
The margins are so narrow that either owner (or fanboy) of their particular console will be more than happy now and in the future, and those faced with the decision to yet purchase will be left with only a few factors to decide:
1. Do I have to play such and such exclusive title now or in the future? Either console could have that title.
2. Do I want my console to be a media player for my video collection? Either console could apply for this, HD download or Blu-ray (I’m thinking HD downloads would last longer as a format, but I could be mistaken).
3. Do I care about tracking for the games I’ve played, more replayability out of my games (trophies/achievements/gamerscore) and online capability standards. Again, either console will serve, though 360’s may be more developed at this time and not in beta or continuously delayed.
4. Do I care about backwards compatibility? While 360 may have emulation capabilities and downloads, PS3 may again decide to have backwards compatibility in a future iteration, as they have in the past, and the ability to download old titles as well.
5. Is price important? If you want to get a Sony Style card (and happen to be in the US, willing to accept whatever other obligations come with it), it brings the price of a PS3 down to 360 proportions, so perhaps this point is mitigated as well.
So at this time is there really a huge difference? I would lean towards 360, but only because of Achievements and Gamerscore, and it being the only present gen console I have purchased at this point. If PS3 had come out a year earlier, it may well have been the other way around.
I can also see myself easily purchasing a PS3 in 2010 after the price drop and or with a sony style card, for God of War III (not an MGS, LBP, or R&C type of guy, the rest of the “exclusives” are questionable for me, but I would definitely try them), but only if I don’t have enough titles to keep me busy on the PS2, 360, DS, and PSP; or if I’m really intrigued by the trophy system integration and backwards compatibility has been implemented with meaningful PSP/PS3 interoperability.

No, what has been said (by Sony guy SCEE president David Reeves) is that they are 300,000 ahead in the PAL territories.
So, unbiased credible verifiable info, not.
We all know it’s BS.
You’d have to be blind not to have seen all the stories on the news of how XBox sales have rocketed since the last price chop
(although obviously the delusional PS3 fanboy element just continue to refuse to believe it & will clutch at any laughably partial & unreliable old source).
The only reason Sony can claim more exclusive titles for 2009, right now in Dec 2008, is that they are forced to show almost everything they have coming to try and generate and keep some kind of interest going in their failed console.
Microsoft & the XBox meanwhile have the luxury of just teasing.
Sony just announced 16,000 redundancies worldwide.
That’s not exactly a symptom of everything going well.

Aaron Greenberg is a slob. He needs to do something about that growth growing out of the top of his neck… Oh I’m sorry, that’s his head.
M$ loves numbers… The only number they will not share with the public is how many consoles have been inflicted with RROD. That’s the only number I care about. So how many is it Aaron? And how many consoles have been affected numerous times?

What games am I looking forward to?
White Knight Chronicles.
And that’s it. Yes, yes, there are more I’m interested in, but my interest in White Knight far outweighs anything else…

You know, for a bunch of people always complaining about how others take a pop at their beloved PS3 for ‘old news’ (ie the PS3-lovers who now claim that everything is just fine & dandy with the game selection available for the PS3) it’s amazing how they can’t give up the RROD stuff as old news.
RROD is old news.
Very old news.
In fact you need to go back to their 1st mobo (the Xenon) to get the usual dig about 30% failure rates accurate.
Since the 1st HDMI mobos (zephyr) and all the way through to the 3 (minor) revisions of the Falcon mobo XBox failure rates have dropped very markedly.
This was even before the new Jasper mobo appeared sadly for the PS3 fanboy element who want to use this tale to scare people the end of the story has now well & truely arrived……but why let the facts stand in the way of a silly dig, eh?
Sony’s track-record is hardly amazing either with the PS2 disc read error problem so bad that they had a class-action suit they settled.
…..and btw whats all this I’m now hearing about disc read problems on the PS3?
Maybe it turns out it was a really dumb idea putting a blue laser video player and games machine in an all-in-one.
(blue-lasers have a very finite life-span, especially the those made in the first couple of years)

You’re (deliberately?) confusing some things.
Unfortunately for Toshiba Microsoft never did back HD DVD fully and so were not the driving force behind it that they might have been.
HD DVD’s “fire sales” were hardly Microsoft’s concern.
They never really did (fully) back any HD disc format.
HD DVD was the DVD Forum & largely Toshiba’s affair.
The latest Jasper XBox 360 is a new version of the XBox 360 but it absolutely is an XBox 360.
It is not (as you seem to think) a different console, just as none of any following revised versions will be anything other than an XBox 360.
All manufacturers update and refine as their products mature. That’s just normal.
You also seem to want to imply that the XBox is not HD already.
It is.
720p, 1080i & 1080p.
All present and correct.
You do not need a blu-ray disc format to have HD.
There is already news of another more efficient new version of the XBox 360 coming at the end of next year.
The 65nm SoC Valhalla mobo and there are rumours of an even later 45nm version.
But they will all be XBox 360s.
I would not expect a new XBox*** until 2011.
…..at which point the PS3 fanboys will still be talking about how ‘in a short while the devs will get to grips with the PS3 and we will start to see how awesome it is’.
One whole generation behind.
Wow, impressive. Not.

im just gonna go ahead an point this out the reason
why the reason why the wii is so popular
is because of the addictiveness of its games
think about this if you were gonna buy a game
wich one would you buy the addictive fun game
that you would want to play over and over again
for the wii
or the ps3 game with kick ass graphics that you would
beat 2x throw it on a shelf and just sits there
gathering dust
i personally would go toward the ps3 more then the wii and xbox
and i think xbox should stick to making pc apps
operating systems and games instead of making video game consoles i mean afterall microsoft was originally known for windows
maybe if they werent so focused on the xbox
vista wouldnt have all these bugs i think they should stick to their original goal “a computer on every desk and in every home, running Microsoft software”

You can’t say it’s just my own invention & not a story that’s out there.

Holy crap, he’s right.
He’s got a point, most ‘new technologies’ do seem to have a short life span. E.g plasma televisions. When they first came out they were sold at a ridiculous price ($15,000 AUD) and only had a guaranteed 5 year life span before the crystals died. I am pretty sure DVD had the same type of fate when it was first released too. I still laugh at this douchebag I know who bought a DVD player for $900 when they first came out, and it broke down within a year… but I digress….

Just a guess:
1894 Film reel, 82 years
1976 VHS, 17 years
1993 DVD, 10 years
2003 Blu-ray, 8 years
2011 HD download to flash memory or other user choice memory format.
Blu-Ray will probably start to be phased out within the next three years. I hope nobody is heavily invested into their Blu-Ray disc library.
December 12th, 2008
Most modern economies are moving towards optic networks as the norm. Once that’s in and HD downloads are fast and inexpensive, then say bye bye to blu ray.

Google ‘PS3 disc read errors’, you’ll see 405,000 hits. So that makes it fact does it ??
A search of “aliens on other planets” reveals 432,000 hits. Aliens haven’t been proved yet, but according to your theory, because it has so numerous hits on google, it must be true ???
Zombies had a staggering 16,200,000 hits – OMG a revlevation, it must be true, according to google ??!!
How bout a search of “free xbox live” – wow a even a mere staggering 12,400,000 hits….. Xbox is well known not to be free, but according to google, your authority on the facts….it is free

Just out of curiosity I checked Google’s top 10 most-searched-for things for PS3 and 360 to find out what was the most important aspect of the consoles to people who were doing the research. I think the results are actually pretty interesting.
PS3:
1. games
2. themes
3. Home
4. cheats
5. update
6. Trophies
7. hacks
8. price
9. news
10. vs. Xbox 360
360:
1. games
2. Elite
3. cheats
4. Achievements
5. Arcade
6. hard drive
7. support
8. repair
9. Pro
10. models
I think this speaks volumes about how consumers view each console.

my ps3 wouldn’t play meet dave. The more I think about it, that seems to be a blessing in disguise. Smart ps3. Only “problem” I’ve ever had.
Is the ps3 disc read errors tied to that bad batch of 40 gigs? I seem to remeber gwaeibg something about that.
Anyway…. 360 fans should really try to go out of their way not to talk about hardware faults. Might have to wait until next gen for the subject to be a talking point.
December 12th, 2008
Happyhockum:
You asserted that the ps3 had a massive disc read fault problem and your proof was a google search. My “childish” analogies have proven that your proof is massively flawed. Your way of countering that argument was to bring up ps2 faults ????
None of our current argument has been about the ps2 faults or hardware failures, so why bring it into this. I don’t care about ps2 faults, because I never had one. I had the orig xbox ….
Sorry, you have “clearly” done nothing to prove your assertion that ps3 has massive disc read error problems.
I will concede that there appears to be some cases of disc read error faults, but not even in the same ball park of RROD. Put it this way, there is hardly a gaming site that I have been too that doesn’t have a “fix your xbox” ad within it’s page. You don’t see any of those ads for the ps3
December 12th, 2008

I said and I quote “and btw whats all this I’m now hearing about disc read problems on the PS3?”
If you’re so paranoid that you have to inflate that to imagining that I had “asserted that the ps3 had a massive disc read fault problem” then that’s your problem.
It’s not there in what I wrote.
I just get tired of hearing the PS3 fanclub talk about this as if every XBox was a troublesome mk1 Xenon and every PS3 was perfect.
You clearly are the one who took my genuine enquirey into a known problem and blew it and yourself up into a lather over it all.
I have never denied that the first XBox 360 model had problems – but it is undeniable that those problems have reduced with every subsequent revision from Xenon to Zephyr to Falcon and now to Jasper
(there were 3 revisions to the last Falcon mobo alone).
Both consoles have had their issues in fact.
It is a fact that Blue lasers have a finite life-span (particularly the first couple of years of them, though we are now assurred that advances have been made); it is a perfectly legitimate question to ask whether putting a movie player and a game player all in one was a smart idea.
I would also give Microsoft some credit for their 3yr guarantee.
That’s what I call standing by your product.
It’s to the shame of the other companies in the business (and by that I mean the whole CE business) that 3yr guaranteees are not standard across the board.
Why not?
I’d like to hear why it’s such a bad idea.
In Europe 3yr guarantees on CE products are not unusual.
December 12th, 2008
M8 if you are putting this on paper as problem, you are insinuating that it is a major fault…otherwise don’t make a major point out of something you know to be a minor issue ???
You try and call me paranoid, but it is you who is making a minor issue into a major point ??
Your quote: “It is a fact that Blue lasers have a finite life-span (particularly the first couple of years of them, though we are now assurred that advances have been made); it is a perfectly legitimate question to ask whether putting a movie player and a game player all in one was a smart idea.”
Wasn’t the original xbox a movie player and game machine in one ?? I know mine was !!
I get sick of the xbox fanclub that say it’s one standard for one system and another the “other” systems.
I don’t have a problem with current generations of 360 (I now have one) and never had an issue. But trying to compare the 1st, 2nd generation 360 RROD with ps3 minor fault rates is like comparing chalk and cheese and if someone was going to use that argument, I would interpret it as them saying it’s a major issue.
I agree, 3 yr warranties should be standard, especially when you shell out $500-$1000 of equipment. You would expect (and they say in their booklets) years of trouble free use and entertainment. Whilst it did take quite some time for ms to acknowledge and then accept the problem, they ought to be commended for finally offering the 3 yr extended warranty.

On topic, interestingly enough, is some things I have found again on MetaCritic.
It seems 360 Has 50% of the highest rated titles of all three consoles combined, at least year to date.
Okay, the average scores were taken from MetaCritic, and PC titles were not counted as precluding exclusivity, as they are CONSOLE exclusive amongst CONSOLES.
In other words, if you don’t already have a gaming computer that can handle the graphics properly (like me) then you can appreciate these exclusives, and we are only counting PRESENT GEN HOME CONSOLES here, not the PC, past consoles, or handhelds. We are counting Live games and PSN games, though unfortunately MetaCritic doesn’t seem to recognize VC games, so all apologies, but at least you know up front.

According to this, 360 is the clear winner so far in overall quality games, but Sony still has some tricks up its sleeve for next year.
If the consoles continue their present pace of quality game releases, it looks like Sony could surpass 360 for the first time next year in it’s number of high rated games releases, but only time will tell. Will it make a difference by then?
I think that depends on whether Sony can develop it’s trophy system, rankings, and home to match 360’s achievements, gamerscore, and Live Gold; then again there is always God of War III to factor into the matter.
And just to put things into perspective, if the PS2 was factored in (it is still producing quality like Persona 4), it would make up 56% of all the top rated games, with over 321 falling into the category. Too bad there is no backwards compatibility with PS3 anymore (maybe Sony decided they could cash in with PSN releases?).

Of course it’s meant in fun.
I would come back at you with this though, the (now mature) DVD laser and it’s tech is very different to the current early gens of blue laser (although as I mentioned earlier there are reports of more durable blue laser diodes coming along).
It’s not inconsistent to be OK about a DVD & game playing XBox but xconcerned about a BD movie and BD game playing PS3.
…..and if you took my mentioning of the PS3 disc reading problems as “insinuating that it is a major fault” then, again, I would look at what I wrote and wonder why you made that leap, I didn’t.
Have a nice day/weekend.

Back on topic, this year is the first year that PS3 caught up to 360 for exclusives, they both released forty-seven. The 360 still has over 50% of console exclusives rated at eighty percent or above between all the present consoles top rated games combined (metacritic). Only nine of those came out in 2009.
On the DVD/Blu-ray front, I think by the time BR players come down to the price of DVD players, we will have moved on to downloads, and the difference in quality is not as pronounced as it was between VHS to DVD. Oddly enough, I think PC hardware adoption will determine whether it stays or not. I could be wrong, but I don’t think this will happen.
