Analysis: NPD breakdown – PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii selling well
The NPD numbers are out and as expected the Wii squashed everyone, while the Xbox 360 did indeed outsell the PS3 2:1 as indicated by Aaron Greenberg. Probably the most surprising thing about the latest NPD numbers was the total hardware sales. All platforms combined managed to sell over 5 million units for the month of November.
These figures indicate spectacular sales during a time of financial difficulty for many in America. This definitely proves that entertainment forms do prosper during periods of recession. Now let’s take a look at the breakdown.
Nintendo
The Nintendo Wii killed all platforms by selling 2.04 million units for the month of November. There is no stopping the Wii force as it continues to sell extremely well two years into the life of the console. The top selling software for the Wii was Wii Play and Wii Fit.
The DS managed to sell 1.57 million units. The DS definitely sold well but it had no software in the top ten, which begs the question what are these people playing?
Overall, Nintendo managed to sell 3.61 million consoles total, for the month of November outselling all other competitors combined.
Sony
The Sony PS3 shifted approximately 378,000 units for the month of November. Surprisingly sales actually doubled from October, which is a good sign for Sony. Out of all the manufactures the PS3 is by far the most expensive piece of equipment on the market, so the fact that it managed to increase sales by 100 percent month over month is a good sign for the PS3. The top games for the PS3 were Call of Duty: World at War and Resistance 2.
The PSP actually outsold the PS3 last month by shifting 421,000 units. It is definitely good to see handheld platforms taking off, but like the DS there are no software titles in the top ten. What are gamers playing on the PSP?
The PS2 continues to sell well, shifting 206,000 with no sign of stopping. Apparently there is still a decent amount of demand for this 8-year-old console. There was no software for the PS2 in the top ten.
Overall, Sony managed to sell approximately 1 million consoles total for the month of November.
Microsoft
The Xbox 360 is on a roll shifting a mammoth amount of 836,000 units for the month of November. The Xbox 360 definitely outsold the PS3 2:1 last month gaining much of the ground lost to the PS3 throughout most of the year. It seems as though the gap between the two consoles will never disappear. The PS3 managed to close the gap earlier this year, but Microsoft widened it right back during the holiday season. Software sales were great with the top two titles were Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War.
Conclusion
It seems that Nintendo is here to stay and dominate all sales. The console is great but lack hardcore software with the two top titles being Wii Fit and Wii Play. I know many gamers are eagerly waiting for Nintendo to announce a new Mario and Zelda game.
Sony did fairly well shifting over a 1 million consoles total. The PS3 specifically did fairly decent considering it still has a $399 price tag during a tough economic recession. However, the PS3’s direct competitor, the Xbox 360, managed to outsell it by a good margin.
Even though Sony had a good run this year with the PS3, the Xbox 360 ultimately came back strong at the end. This really has me wondering what will happen next year with the awesome selection of software coming out.

im just gonna go ahead an point this out the reason
why the reason why the wii is so popular
is because of the addictiveness of its games
think about this if you were gonna buy a game
wich one would you buy the addictive fun game
that you would want to play over and over again
for the wii
or the ps3 game with kick ass graphics that you would
beat 2x throw it on a shelf and just sits there
gathering dust
i personally would go toward the ps3 more then the wii and xbox
and i think xbox should stick to making pc apps
operating systems and games instead of making video game consoles i mean afterall microsoft was originally known for windows
maybe if they werent so focused on the xbox
vista wouldnt have all these bugs i think they should stick to their original goal “a computer on every desk and in every home, running Microsoft software”
the reason i would chose the ps3 is because of
its vast array of features from a you can install an operating system on the ps3 remote play
plug in just about any usb controller even one with more buttons then the ps3 controller
use a printer a mouse rip and listen to music watch videos bluetooth compatibility six axis
cross media bar the ps3 is more of a home entertainment system
rather then just being some old game system like the Xbox 360.
December 11th, 2008
i just noticed something if this was overall game systems sold sony would actually outsell microsoft
by 169k
ps3 ps2 psp
sold 378k + sold 206k + sold 421k
sony=1005k units sold vs. microsoft=836k units sold

LOOK AT THE SCOREBOARD!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris related to Ivan? lol

@ SW, oh god please no. People like him should not be allowed to breed.
December 12th, 2008
Slightly disappointing for Sony, but in the other regions PS3 is still very strong, outselling the 360.
The global picture for Sony is quite bright. I am only assume the large 360 sales are because it’s cheap price, and large numbers of trailer parks in middle America.
December 12th, 2008
well I can’t say I didn’t see this coming with the previous stories on blorge (2-1). Some people only just look at price. 199 is great, but then u need a hdd.
I can rest easy knowing the ps3 still plays the best exclusives and is not going the way of the dreamcast.
Ign put in favor of the ps3 once again. I wonder what next parameter will be? Exclusive and genres seem to already give the nod to Sony.
December 12th, 2008
Console exclusives are personal opinion at the end of the day.
I’d prefer Gears, Fable 2, Too Human and Left 4 dead over Haze, LBP, Resistance 2 and MGS4.
People have spoken with their wallets.
@ Snakeskincowboy, source please?

“People have spoken with their wallets.”
True, True…. Soccer Moms are people too.

To answer your question about DS and PSP owners, I’m playing games I bought last year that I never got around to because I was mainly playing console games. Now that I have a chance, I’m going through them. Also, DS and PSP games can still be rented instead of bought, which would be the wise choice in an economic downturn. I also heard the PSP was pretty easy to crack and download other systems games, but I haven’t experimented with that (also outlined in Popular Science as well as all over the Web).
Hopefully those exclusives won’t be delayed until 2010. Wow, trailer parks in “middle America”? Wouldn’t they enjoy the mooing things in MGS4 and LBP more than Fable 2 and Gears of War? Or maybe you’re right with Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising over…
PT, I hear the soccer Moms like Abba Singstar the best:)

So are bitter fanboys….
December 12th, 2008
So you’re saying you purchased another 360?
December 12th, 2008
I don’t care much about NPD numbers. The only reason I care at all is if the 360 beats the PS3, and it looks like it will, what will Sony do with the PS4. Will they take out features to make it less expensive and more competitive? If the 360 beats the PS3 by too many units it won’t be good for any of us. What would push MS to make large improvements on their next system? The best thing that could happen is for these two to be close at the end of this generation, forcing them to push the envelope on the next consoles!
December 12th, 2008
I agree with Wylie, even as a PS3 owner, I have no real desire to see the Xbox put completely out of competition.
I would rather they stay neck and neck, providing the competition in consoles that have brought us to where we are now: great gaming choices for anyone’s preferences.
I would only be worried about the situation if the ps3 was so dismal in sales that it was in risk of being shelved. We are so far past that point now that I relish the pressure that the xbox and wii put on sony to make the ps4 better.
I mean, look at what happened with the ps2/ps3 transition. I would have to agree that the success of the ps2 made sony complacent, leading to a fairly expensive console that caters to everyone, while making very few non-hardcores happy.
As a hardcore gamer since i first played smurfs on colecovision at the age of about 4, I am ok with it~
December 12th, 2008
I think the wii is already going to make both look into a different direction. Kind of a shame. The PC may be the only choice then for top end graphics (more so than it is now I mean).
Although If Sony goes with an upgraded cell (talked about in apast article on blorge) developers will not have such a steep learning curve like they did for this gen.
December 12th, 2008
Ahh look at you guys crying. Get over it. Your PS3 was a trojan horse for Bluray. Sony forgot who their market was, didn’t listen to developers on what they wanted to see in game development. Pushed bluray and the Cell like it was something special meanwhile it was not developed for gaming at all. Even Folding was pushed before the games and some games your still waiting on. Sure 2009 looks good for the PS3, it’s about time we see some real games I hope. All this potential talk is just hype that will never be revealed. It was a stupid move and one that Sony pays for with each pruchase of the console because their loosing money on each one. Add the expensive cost of bluray and they are hanging on to a fine tread. Sure it has everything packed in but not everyone uses every function forcing people to buy what they might not need. Price point is everything and Gimics seem to trump Price points this time around. Offering free Online is all it has but everyone know that LIVE is far more superior. As for the Library for next year well just have to wait and see because the 360 is not living on potential. They market the games they have now and drop suttle hints about the future. Just remember that 360 games have longjivity. Halo 3 was last year september yet it remains in the 1 spot for online paly along with Gears, COD Games, UNO, Bommerman, GTA IV, Assult Heros, Agies Wings, Mortal Kombat 3 and Madden. These games have been around for awhile. They are never short of people and they are all great games.

Cad,
Who’s crying? The 360 won the NPD numbers over the PS3, wait a second, ok I’m over it. All I’m saying is MS put out an unreliable console when it did have competition. If Sony came out and said there would be no PS4, then what kind of machine would MS put out. I don’t care who wins, I just want the numbers to be close enough and large enough to keep the next consoles going forward and not backward!
December 12th, 2008
Personally I’d love to see a new cutting edge console appear very soon (which neither the XBox 360 nor the PS3 are right now).
PC graphics cards are far ahead right now – at least 4x faster than the ancient Nvidia 7800GS based graphics chip in the PS3 or the ATi X1900 based graphics chip in the XBox 360.
Sadly the truth is that the consoles are all several generations old and out of date
(despite the advantages a fixed hardware arrangement can bring).
Hopefully the next ‘next gen’ will jump to current PC standards, if not the next – and by doing so force a move to the kind of eye candy we ought to be getting but for some strange reason are not, right now (even in the PC world).
Hopefully they won’t be so stingy on memory either (I notice the new ATi HD 4870 X2 has a whopping 2gbs of fast GDDR5 memory).
Why not?
I’d also mention the claims about PS3 exclusives and the 2009 line-up.
PS3 is doing so badly that Sony have to lay out almost everything on the table to sustain some sort of interest.
Microsoft can afford to just tease.
For the reasonable & balanced about this they will see that there’s a world of difference between what you think might happen in 2009 based on what partial info has come out as of now in late 2008 and the actual outcome.
PS3 is not in a good place right now.
IMO it is all down to Blu-ray & their short-sighted strategy that made sense to beat HD DVD but which has just wrecked their gaming position & ironically ensured that Blu-ray itself is stuck largely in the PS3 niche with zero hope of ever breaking into the mainstream fast enough replace DVD.
There are just too many other ways to get high def (legal & not so legal).
December 12th, 2008
If you’re prepared to pay for bleeding edge, then maybe they will make it.
I suspect most people are not.
‘There are just too many other ways to get high def (legal & not so legal).’
But they suffer for the same reason as bluray. A shit load of people simply don’t have HD equipment or don’t give a fuck.
Even if you did get a HD rip. You’d then need to either have tv out on your pc (or a media ctr setup), or attempt to stream it to another device such as the 360, which has no MKV support (don’t think the ps3 does either) so you’d need to re-encode the thing.
December 12th, 2008
Oh I should add that I love HD movies! And anyone who hasn’t tried watching one, should!
December 12th, 2008
SW
Of course, I agree, you need the HD TV
(I notice there are disputed numbers for that out right now, one source – Leichtman Research Group – said the USA has 34% or Nielson has just published stats saying it’s only 23% of households have HD TV).
Then, it’s true, you also need the high-end audio kit (receiver & speakers).
That’s why I do not see Blu-ray as going ‘mainstream’, the mass-market is never going to have the big enough HD TV (at normal viewing distances) to make 1080p worthwhile and neither are they likely to stump up for the audio necessary to make the most of the new audio standards.
In time the market penetration will change – although far too late for Blu-ray, by then HD TV services, VOD, DVRs, streaming and downloading will have big chunks of the market.
Blu-ray will merely be another minority niche.
But, for enthusiasts who accept that HD (in whatever form) is not so hard to enjoy now.
HD on your PC is pretty easy & even cheap to do now.
Wired or wireless.
Even older PCs can do it with some clever software (CoreAVC especially) and a graphics card that takes the load off of the CPU, as most now do.
It’s getting easier too, a load of HD TVs & HD receivers are coming along now and support wireless streaming.

Thought I would just throw this in

@hh
Blu ray will grab similar people that Care about physical media that they can own. Take away the HD part of that argument and all those things mentioned exist today. Doesn’t appear to be hurting DVD all that much. DD as far as I’m concerned will be a better way to rent once it’s properly ironed out. HD market is on the rise( practically can’t find non HD TVs anymore.)
@CAD
You sure your name isn’t Eric?
December 12th, 2008
CNN (hardly a news outlet known for bias in business) are right.
High def is an enthusiasts play-thing and will most likely stay that way – allowing time for the necessary infrastructure to catch up with the requirements for downloads and streaming (and it’s worth noting that downloads do not require the same higher speeds as streaming…..although even here buffering is a major factor, it’s not all about simple speeds.
Survey after survey show a huge chunk of HD TV owners happily supplying their new HD TV with SD programs.
The HD TV upscales these and the owners are happy.
Or they buy an HD TV service (usually with a nice big DVR).
It’s perfectly plain that many of these same people will be only to happy to have ‘HD lite’ services (and you can see this already happening with the various 720p services)
Most people simply have no real need for Blu-ray, not at the price it comes at (and although a handful of cheaper players can now be had most still go for $200+) and not at the prices movies come for……and again it’s worth saying that new release DVD prices are not the problem for BD, it’s DVD’s 1 – 3mth prices).
I think you’re looking at physical ownership as was, phranctoast.
MP3 has trained at least one generation that physical ownership is not really necessary and that things change.
When movie digital downloading begins to mature I would expect it to follow the music business model.
They’ll be usual greedy idiots to begin with and then they will begin to realise that they are hurting their own sales& profits at which point the DRM will start to loosen and undoubtedly some sort of downloading to burn will be enabled.
Just as has happened with the music side.
Even as it is right now burning good quality 720p or 1080p encodes to DVD5 or DVD9 is easy and readily available (and cheap with ‘ordinary DVD’ being the media).
Yes there are some very poor DVD5 & DVD9 720p & 1080p encodes out there but there are also some seriously impressive ones too – just as some retail HD is deeply disappointing and some can be stunning too.
Its all about the quality of the source, the quality of encoding tools used and the skills of the encoder – and DVD5 & DVD9 encodes done professionally are surely bound to be even better?
Seriously, who ‘needs’ 25gb or 50gb?
The last numbers I saw showed (to sept 2008) that the majority of HD TVs sold in the USA were 32″ – 42″ 720p sets.
This means that potential customers looking for the leap from upscaled DVD to Blu-ray are going to be less impressed than they might be.
The jump from upscaled DVD to Blu-ray is not so great on a small/medium sized HD TV (under 50″).
I would also point out that the apparant growth in rentals cannot be anything but poisonous to Blu-ray, particularly as the sweetheart deals done with the likes of Netflix etc to gather their exclusive custom must eat into margins and be so much less than actual Blu-ray movie sales.
December 12th, 2008
all good points hh. I do believe there is a market for people who want to own as well.
Mp3 is also more mobile. I believe memory will work it’s self out in time and be cheap, but I know I for one would not like it hd media collection on an hdd. I’ve lost countless hours of porn and music
December 13th, 2008
When I went to by my HDTV the 720P TV’s were and still are much more affordable. The sales rep even tried to tell me I did not need a 1080P TV because the highest output on HDTV Programs was 720P. When I brought up my 360 and I may have mentioned HD Players she noticed I had a point. The truth is though I have 2 TV’s in the living room so whenever the wife want to watch TV she can while I can still play games on the HDTV. But having my older flatscreen 27″ Toshiba TV and my 42″ LG HDTV sitting in the same room will show you that more then often the Toshiba will show up my HDTV in clairty and colour sometimes. Especially when I’m not watching a HD Channel. I now understand that taking a 420i signal and stretching it out to 1080P just looks stupid. The bottom line is the support for this HD business is not quite there yet.
December 13th, 2008
I bought my 1080p 47″ Sceptre last year for $1200, and a 37″ Sceptre two years before for about the same price. Before I left for Iraq this year, the 360 had HD movie rentals for quite a high price, and I tried a few, but could not justify it over Netflix.
I was one who bought the HD DVD, and got the refund back from Amazon, so I still used that player, which manages to upgrade the DVD quality fine (for me). I can notice the difference between HD DVD and standard DVD’s, but it is simply not that monumental for me to buy another BR player.
And for this whole console exclusive argument, year to date, Metacritic has the 360 with 69, PS3 w/26, and the Wii w/29 rated at 80 or higher.
December 13th, 2008
@carlb
I know I sound like a broken record, but the reason the 360 has so many more exclusives than the other two was simply that it was out a year earlier. How many of those exclusives would have also appeared on the ps3 too or to a lesserdegree the wii?
December 14th, 2008
This first year argument really makes no sense. First the 360 did not sell that well in it’s first year. The Wii has surpassed it in sales so lets just drop that crap. Second There were not that many games that came out. King Kong, Rumble Roses, Perfect Dark Zero, Cameo, Dead or Alive, and probably the yearly sports Games, Maybe Project Gothem and I think NFS Most Wanted. I’m sure I’m missing some but in the first year there was not that much to talk about.

So as you can see, the 360 is the clear winner so far in overall quality games for present gen consoles, but Sony still has some tricks up its sleeve for next year.
If the consoles continue their present pace of quality games releases, it looks like Sony could surpass 360 for the first time next year in it’s number of high rated games releases, but only time will tell.
Will it make a difference by then? I think that depends on whether Sony can develop it’s trophy system, rankings, and home to match 360’s achievements, gamerscore, and Live Gold; then again there is always God of War III to factor into the matterMoney mouth
And just to put things into perspective, if the PS2 was factored in (it is still producing quality like Persona 4), it would make up 56% of all the top rated games, with over 321 falling into the category. Too bad there is no backwards compatibility with PS3 anymore (maybe Sony decided they could cash in with PSN releases?).”

God damn, that was some major pwnage! Nice research there CAD.

My argument makes perfect sense!!!!!.
The 360 also sold fine for its first year. Almost 10 million.
Oh…btw. the 360 came out at the end of 2005. So those 14 “exclusives” came out between Nov 22nd and Jan 1st.
Pretty major pwnage!
By looking a CarlB’s numbers you can see a lot came out between Nov 22nd and Nov 11th of the following year.
2007 would represent the closest they could get by comparison and 360 beat the ps3 by 8 titles with a score of 80% or higher. At 2008 they evened out, and 2009 we’ll see the tide turn.

phranctoast,
The numbers refute your original argument.
212-14 still equals 198.
Subtract that first year off of the 360’s exclusives, and you still have 60 rated at 80 or above compared to PS3’s 26. Over twice as many.
It is yet to be seen whether they can surpass the rate of yearly high rated exclusives next year. Even if they can, it may not be by enough to make up for all the ground they lost. I applaud them for trying, and I will most likely pick up my PS3 for $150 in 2011 to play God of War III. Or a backwards compatible PS4 that has a trophies and ranking standard for all games.
