2008 VGA prediction – PS3, Xbox 360, Wii
This year was phenomenal with so many great games. Many gamers still have a huge backlog of games that they need to get through playing. With such a great lineup, this past year it really is tough on deciding which games deserve to win an award.
The Video Game Awards are coming up and before the winners are announced, I have made my predictions as to what games will win in each category. My predictions are what I think will win in each category and not what I think deserves to win. I decided not to have every single category because I am sure that most of you will not care who the winner of Big Name in the Game – female category.
Best Independent Game
World of Goo
PixelJunk Eden
Braid
Audiosurf
It was a tough choice between Braid and PixelJunk Eden, because both games are great. While Eden has much more replayabilty, I predict Braid will win because of its sheer originality.
Studio of the Year
Media Molecule
Rockstar North
Harmonix
Bethesda Game Studios
Media Molecule did a fantastic job with LBP, and the game is probably the most unique and creative game out this year. I predict this studio will win hands down.
Game of the Year
Gears of War 2
Grand Theft Auto IV
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Fallout 3
LittleBigPlanet
This one is pretty tough, I think Fallout 3 and GTA IV both have equal chances of winning. Ultimately, I will have to give the edge to GTA IV, after all it is the highest rated game this year.
Best Team Sports Game
FIFA Soccer 09
NBA 2K9
Madden NFL 09
NHL 09
I would have to go with Madden as the winner. Madden 09 really delivers that next gen experience EA has been hyping about for a while. FIFA 09 is probably the best FIFA ever made, but most of the judges are American so Madden 09 is more likely to win.
Best Performance by a Human Female
Debi Mae West As “Meryl Silverburgh”
Keeley Hawes As “Lara Croft”
Paula Tiso As “Silvia Christel”
Nathalie Cox As “Juno Eclipse”
Its a close call between Meryl and Lara Croft. I would have to give the edge to Debi Mae West for a great performance of a leading female co-star role.
Best Performance by a Human Male
Stephen Fry As “The Narrator”
David Hayter As “Old Snake”
Jason Zumwalt As “Roman Bellic”
Michael Hollick As “Niko Bellic”
This one is hard to say between Roman Bellic and Old Snake. Jason Zumwalt did an excellent job of portraying the endearing Roman, but David Hayter is probably the favorite here.
Best Multi-Player Game
Call of Duty: World at War
Resistance 2
Left 4 Dead
Gears of War 2
I would say Resistance 2 and Left 4 Dead are a even tie here. I will give Resistance 2 the edge due to the scale and extent of the online content.
Best PC Game
Left 4 Dead
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
Crysis Warhead
Spore
Left 4 Dead is probably the best PC game out this year. Some may argue that Warhammer deserves to win. However, Left 4 Dead is what I predict the judges will pick.
Best PS3 Game
Grand Theft Auto IV
LittleBigPlanet
Resistance 2
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
It makes no sense to have GTA IV in here because if it is GOTY then it has to be the best PS3 game by default. If not my second choice would be MGS 4.
Best Wii Game
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
No More Heroes
Wii Fit
Boom Blox
I would have to say SSBB for this category. This game was probably the most anticipated game on the Wii this year.
Best Xbox 360 Game
Fallout 3
Grand Theft Auto IV
Gears of War 2
Fable II
Again, it is pretty silly to have multiplatform titles in here because if GTA IV wins GOTY, then by default it should be the best Xbox 360 game. If not my second choice has to be Gears of War 2.
Best Action Adventure Game
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Mirror’s Edge
Grand Theft Auto IV
Dead Space
I am not sure how MGS4 fits into this category, but since there are no other tactical stealth action game I suppose this will have to do.
Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show
Naruto: The Broken Bond
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Quantum of Solace
LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was probably the best video game based on a movie title out this year.
Best Graphics
LittleBigPlanet
Gears of War 2
Fallout 3
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
MGS4 is probably the best looking game presentation and technology wise, but I have to give Gears of War 2 the nod for using the rugged textures that give it the detailed look.
Best Handheld Game
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Patapon
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
God of War: Chains of Olympus
God of War has to win, I mean its God of War.
Best RPG
Fallout 3
The World Ends With You
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
Fable II
Fallout 3 managed to surpass everyone’s expectations. This game is definitely the winner of the Best RPG category hands down.
Best Shooter
Gears of War 2
Left 4 Dead
Resistance 2
Far Cry 2
It is a toss up between Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2 for the best shooter of 2008. Resistance 2 is the best shooter for hardcore gamers but I think Gears of War 2 has a much broader appeal, so most people will enjoy it like a blockbuster summer flick.
There you have it folks, my predictions as to what games will win each category. I’m eager to see how close I am. Unlike the past Video Game Awards shows on Spike TV, judges will pick the winner of each category. The show received some criticism in the past for allowing gamers to vote for the winner. That is how the 50 Cent game won previously. Make sure to catch the results tomorrow night on Spike TV.

best shooter should be farcry 2… gears 2 shouldnt get the best graphics… although its really good…
they should have included Criterion… cus that studio did a LOT for burnout paradise… also rockstar north did a lot as well.. trophy support and the quick patch… which is a Win in my book…

I agree with most of those, thats a pretty good prediction, but i sure hope that PS3 best game isn’t GTA 4 (i realise what you said about giving it GOTY) But imho MGS4 blows GTA out of the water. However i think its important to have a multiplat as GOTY to quell the flamewars. If we had an exclusive GOTY we’d have flamewars on a biblical scale.

well… gears was a GOTY!!! that was a fine pick… I wish MGS 4 gets it… because the PS3 needs something to build up our self esteem
MGS 4 was VERY polished… traditionally GOTY has been polished games that delivers on its promise… so far… no problem with the weird ass online mode… just no trophy support… thats what pisses me off…
Fallout 3 had enough glitches for GS to cut .5 points from the ps3 version… and the game just “ENDS”… no more explorin… I dont expect this from the devs of oblivion…
and Im pissed at GTA because I got the crappy ending where **SPOILER WARNING**

I laugh cuz these stupid awards mean WHAT? They are bragging rights for devs but nothing more really. The gameras that make them win have already done so, its not like these dumb awards (with no truly objective criteria) are gonna increase sales by another million units or anything.
But anyway, disagree just because a title wins GOTY it must be definition win the best PS3 and best X360 awards. A multi-platform title that ranks highly in console categories in theory should beat out an exclusive for GOTY without winning either console category.

One thing I have to say.
I DO hope No More Heroes gets some serious consideration for best game on the Wii. SSBB IS the better game, but No More Heroes was one of the few games by a third party that made everyone that play it say “you know, those motion controls really CAN work!”
Brawl cannot say the same, and it wasn’t even made by a third party.
No More Heroes got the motion controls just right.

First time I died… second time I kept spawning rockets… hehe… she never saw them coming…
I felt like this was the classic MGS style boss battle that was in the older games… I never played them… saw a lot of vids on youtube… its so FUCKING AWESOME!!!!
I saw at the end of the level… it had taken me 8 hours… EIGHT HOURS IN ONE LEVEL!!! boy… I love the cut scenes… did anyone else think that the turret sequence on top of the armored car was a bit out of place???
