2008 VGA results: best graphics Metal Gear Solid 4, GOTY GTA4
The Video Game Awards just wrapped up and I have to say I was off base on some of the predictions. However, overall it was a great show with lots of world premiere trailers that did not disappoint.
As I predicted, Gears of War 2 will be receiving a new map pack called the Combustible map pack available tonight at midnight. Shame on the readers expecting a Gears of War 3 announcement so soon. The world premier trailers for God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 were phenomenal as expected. I am sure many gamers are hyped about these games just by looking at the trailer.

The award for best studio and best PS3 game went to LittleBigPlanet. Clearly it still made no sense that the game of the year would not win in the console specific category when it was listed as a nominee.
I am missing a few of the game awards because Spike TV decided to run through like 15 of the awards within two minutes of the end. I will update the list as soon as I have the missing awards. As expected Grand Theft Auto 4 took home the best game of the year award.

GTA 4 was boring…so I ain’t as bothered that Microsoft got exclusive DLC rights; they probably weren’t intelligent enough to see that interest would wane, it was just typical M$, buy up anything and everything to prevent competition.
Even though once you’ve completed it there ain’t really much value playing it again, MGS4 should have got GOTY. I doubt we’ll see a game with that much attention to detail for, ooo, another twelve months until GT5 is released.
Yeah, that’s right, can’t buy the 50+million selling Gran Turismo franchise can you M$? You stick to shitty Forza on your multiple DVD’s.

lock_down, as intelligent as your missive is, there seems to be a few flaws, beside the glaring unreasoned bias.
DLC investment for top-selling (and top played) games is probably a better investment than an indefinitely beta version of Home.
While MGS4 may be GOTY worthy, you probably would have seen a reason for playing it again if it came with some creative trophies to make you play the game in different ways.
The next real GT has been a long time coming.
It’s okay to be critical, but try to temper it with some kind of intelligence, otherwise you just wind up displaying your lack of it.

I think it is a telling that the GTA DLC has hardly been reported as a headline, or hyped up, in any report I can see from these awards…it’s not even on 360fanboy.com (disclaimer: at the time of writing…and they’ve had enough time to put up a headline.)
Considering that it was the “world premiere” of L and D, and that it will command a reasonable price tag (£13.99 rumoured in the UK) *and* that it is for the most hyped and best selling game of year *and* Xbots jumped all over the exclusive DLC as some kind of victory for the Xbox over the PS3, it is strange that nothing is being made of its first glimpse.
Judging by the trailer it’s probably because it sucks.
I am biased; I’m a PS3 fanboy, and I like it. If we didn’t have Sony, we’d have to endure Wii crap (geddit) and endless Halo expansions for the rest of the generation.
Gran Turismo 5, God Of War 3, Heavy Rain and Killzone 2….bring on next year!

Why did Gears win “Best Shooter”? And why wasn’t Metal Gear 4 even nominated? Shouldn’t “Best Shooter” be reserved for FPS?
Anyway, I checked Game Stop and they have God of War III listed as 10/1/2009!!! I can’t find Uncharted 2 though…

Okay, that’s better, at least you are not afraid to say you are biased and a fanboy, and that is refreshing.
As for DLC sales, I am not sure how well they have done (would shivering isles be a good example?), but I would imagine more than a few GTAIV fans (I think that is a lot), will buy it and probably enjoy it.
I would liken it to Gran Turismo/Elder Scrolls fans buying Prologue/Shivering Isles and enjoying it. Even though it was not a full sequel, it still partly quelled some appetites temporarily until the next one comes out.
And I fully agree that Sony justifies it’s existence in the videogame market by providing another alternative to 360, and just like 360, it has it’s strengths and weaknesses.
God of War 3 is the only one I would look forward to off of that list, but that is probably because I am a 360/PS2/DS/PSP owner, and PS3 is not part of the equation for me (at least yet). It seems to be the only title that is truly unique that the 360 does not offer a viable alternative to (sorry, not really interested in LBP).
I hope for Sony’s sake (and competetive game quality in general) that they make the price reduction and redesign soon, put backwards compatibility back in, fully implement the trophy/ranking system, and do not delay God of War III past 2009.
Unfortunately, Blu-Ray seems to be the thing that keeps PS3 expensive, hopefully they can find a way around that before the next gen.

Here is another question. Why did LBP win best PS3 game and not MGS4. And why did MGS4 get best graphics when Gears was so much better and detailed to all 4 corners of the screen in every scene. Like I said these awards suck. Boxing is a dying sport and they brought that crackhead Mike Tyson to advertise the game. UFC is where it is now.

lockdown – GT4 had 300 physics parameters in their sim calcuations. Forza has 8,000 (yes, THOUSAND)…. MS doesn’t need the GT series. Forza has already been crowned the new king of sims as proven with reviews from pros and gamers alike….

If I had more confidence that an MS console monopoly would be good for us then I wouldn’t need to be a fanboy.
Even when the PS2 dominated the early 2000’s and sold in bundles, Sony were still, and still are, committed to the PS2. Some of the best PS2 games came out 5+ years after the PS2 was released; some developed by Sony’s own studios.
If the 360 was allowed to dominate, MS showed last generation with the original Xbox that it isn’t afraid to cut and run and leave customers pissing in the wind; there are already murmurs of a new Xbox console. So once it comes out does that mean the 360 will be dead? Probably.
And it’s old I know, but even with competition, MS still actively sold consoles that it knew would RRoD, along with other defects.
Given that their strategy this generation has been to pretty much been to take down Sony at all costs, and the arrogant statements that they constantly put out snipping at Sony, the picture would surely be worse without Sony.
It’s like Internet Explorer 6. When MS had no competition, it didn’t bother to work on IE6, which is now an actively dangerous piece of software. It’s only when Firefox was developed and started eating into IE’s lead that MS got its finger out. And now IE is one of MS’s most important bits of software.
It would be the same thing in the console world without Sony. But unlike Firefox, a game console can’t be developed by just anyone.
The truth is that the Xbox division of Microsoft just re-affirms everything you hate about them; just pure arrogance; I don’t think even a 360 fanboy could argue against that. Sony of course has had its moments of self-congratulation — what company doesn’t? — but it has been nowhere near as smug as MS.
As for the PS3 next year, Sony must — neigh, HAS TO — be planning something. The 45nm Cell is going into production, so I suspect we may see a new slim-line PS3, and David Reeves has stated that Sony will get more aggressive next year.
GT5, GOW3 etc are all likely to be great games next year; and Sony would be crazy to do nothing and just sit back like it has done this year.
Competition is good; Sony dominance would be, and has proven to be, good; but Microsoft dominance? I’m not sure.

Dude, that’s unfair. The PS2 was developed nearly 10 years ago and hard drives/net play/ weren’t widespread. Granted, multi taps did suck….
Sony dominance did prove good; just look at the breadth, depth and diversity of games — and games are the important thing — in the back catalogue for the PS2. The game selection on the PS2 will probably be unmatched for some time; unless Sony get their ass in gear soon.
Yeah, PlayStation Network is a complete car crash, I dunno what’s going on there.
But anyway, if MS dominated we would have to pay wayyy too much for a hard drive for the 360. We would have to sit and twiddle our thumbs while MS fixed our RRoD Xbox (yeah, I know “Jasper”) and we would have to listen to a jet turbine taking off every time we launched up the 360.
Or you can just get a PS3 and not put up with all that shit

Interesting thought about competition: Sony and M$ both keep each other in check, but what about the Wii? The Wii has no competition at all this generation. With that in mind, they easily coasted through the holiday season without a single triple A title. Nintendo still has not come up with an answer to the memory issue…. And while the other two released NXE and Home, the Wii finally released Wii speak.

yeah the ps2 didnt have a hard disk… nor a network plug thing… it was mainly a single player console… the best games on that system are single player… the best games on the 360 are multiplayer… so you got your obvious choice… I play a lot of single player games… so the ps3 is my choice…
also… with all the importance of multiplayer… I cant believe that not all 360s have wireless connectivity… I have to buy a $50 network adapter thing… that pisses me off… so if my elite breaks and I have to replace it with an arcade… I have to buy an wireless adapter…

No one said that the Xbox didn’t force Sony to advance their hardware, or even their online for that matter. But who cares who invented the Xbox, it’s still a MS product. Everyone knows that MS doesn’t invent anything. They just take other peoples ideas, throw their money behind it, and market them better then anyone else could. So all of a sudden it’s OK for Nintendo to have Mario and Zelda but it’s not OK for the 360 to have Halo, Gears, Fabel, Project Gothem, Forza, Banjo Kazooie, Mass Effect, Dead or alive, Vivia Pinata, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Narouto, Condemned, Ninja Gaiden, Lips, Perfect Dark Zero, Scene it, Shadow Run, Blue Dargon, Infinate Undiscovery, Cameo and whatever exclusive games that I might have missed. MS have got away with so much this gen with dodgy hardware, and clever marketing i.e. The Arcade.
I bet parents get bemused when get their kids come to them asking for a wifi adapter and hard drive. They must think “Christ, you buy a kid a console, and yet they still always want more.”
It’s clear MS knew about RRoD; it’s now official that they knew about the disc scratching. I hope MS gets everything they get from that.
The 360 is frankly one of the worst pieces of mass produced consumer electronics ever built.
Quite how MS have got away with it for so long is baffling.

I have to say that if I lived in a one room studio apartment I wouldn’t need WiFi. However, since I live in a house and my Internet connection is on the opposite side of my house from where my main TV is I find it quite useful! Some people prefer to buy the limited product and add onto it and others like to buy a product that includes everything so not to worry about the extra expenses later on. I bought the PS3 for the features it offers. If the 360 is more your liking than just be happy with your purchase. I’m happy with mine!

Wifi is essential for my own ease of online play, as well as access to my computer, my mum’s laptop and her husband’s computer. Not everyone needs that access, but I do. I move my PS3 around a lot as well, from bedroom to living room, as well as to other peoples houses.
And Wylie, I noticed that new sentence too!! Must be tough, but it is nice to know he is making progress.
