PS3 Home updates – Improvements still needed

December 18, 2008

We always knew Playstation Home was going to have problems when the great unwashed rolled in, so it’s not surprising to find that just a week after launch we have a new update. But while this should start to fix the connection issues being experienced, it won’t do anything to actually make Home more entertaining.

I like Home. It’s a brilliant idea that has been implemented really well. I wish it hadn’t have taken Sony so long to get it out on the streets but now it’s here it’s quite a cool addition to the library of PS3 services. But it could be improved massively.

Today has seen Home version 1.04 roll out to everyone’s PS3. This update is the start of Sony trying to fix the connection issues that some Playstation 3 owners have been experiencing since the virtual world went live last week. Some people haven’t yet been able to sample Home while other get continual error messages.

Unfortunately, one of the by-products of this update is the loss of voice chat, albeit temporarily. Sony hasn’t officially given a reason for this move but it’s highly likely that live voice chat was causing bandwidth issues that have lead to the server connection problems. Text chat will still be available and Sony is promising voice chat to return in the future.

Sony has moved quickly to repair the connection problems and that’s great, but when is it actually going to start adding more features to Home to keep us all occupied? I just feel there needs to be more “stuff” to do on Home because otherwise there’s a distinct possibility of the service becoming tired and boring really quickly.

For starters, our avatars could do with more clothes to choose from, even if they have to be paid for with real life money. I don’t want to dress the same way as everyone else. Hell, I don’t even want to see one person wearing exactly the same outfit as me. Yes, I am Victoria Beckham in another life.

I’d also love to see more things to do when I’m not chatting to friends or playing games. Install some more arcade machines, and a few more pool tables while you’re at it. I’m sick of standing waiting for a go on something when there surely should be enough of everything in each area to make queuing a thing that only real life saps experience.

I know Home is still in open beta and is likely to be for some time. And the beta is obviously paying dividends because it’s already helped Sony identify and try to fix a big problem. But I want more updates on a regular basis so that Home truly lives up to its ambitious nature. Otherwise Sony may as well scrap the whole thing and forget it ever existed.
