Xbox 360 copies Wii again – Moms targeted as next consumers
The success of the Nintendo Wii has had a huge impact on the video games industry. Here is a small, underpowered, SD in the face of HD console which has massively outperformed its rivals. So the inevitable has started to happen: the rivals are stealing Nintendo’s ideas and going after the same mainstream consumer base.
When the runners and riders of this console generation stood at the starting gate, I never thought the Wii had a hope in hell against the Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, I got a job on another site a couple of years ago by writing a sample post arguing how the Wii was destined to fail. It might have got me the job but how wrong could I have been?
The Wii has succeeded due to its acceptance by the mainstream, going where no other console has ever gone before. Sure, the original Playstation brought gaming to the masses but the people buying Wiis this Christmas are unlikely to have become a gamer due to the Playstation. In fact, many of them won’t even have touched a games console in their life.
The problem with Nintendo’s strategy proving so successful is that those same rivals seeing their bums being kicked royally by the Wii month in, month out are going to want a piece of the action. This has lead, inevitably, to both the PS3 and Xbox 360 mimicking some of the features of the Wii, and releasing games squarely aimed at the casual end of the market.
The Xbox 360 has always had a reputation as the console for serious gamers, with its brilliant mix of racers and shooters being the bread and butter of the hardcore. But Microsoft is gradually trying to increase the console’s appeal to the mass-market. We’ve already seen Lips, At The Movies, Avatars, and the New Xbox Experience.
According to Ars Technica, the latest innovation in Microsoft’s arsenal has seen moms all over the U.S. being bribed to throw Xbox 360 ‘brand advocate’ parties. In exchange for “microwave popcorn, 1,600 points to spend on Xbox Live, a remote control, a three-month trial of Xbox Live, and a copy of Scene It? Box Office Smash”, the women held parties where they extolled the virtues of the console.
The aim is clear: to make the Xbox 360 more of a family-friendly console that even the archetypal soccer mom will find appealing. Whether this will do anything to help the Microsoft console in its fight with the Nintendo Wii remains to be seen. I personally think Nintendo has the casual market well and truly sewn up this generation with the dual forces of the Wii and DS.

damn… again with this copying business… do I have to use my Mcdonalds vs Burger King example again???
cant we just get along and discuss games???
and when do we play gta 4 multiplayer??
December 22nd, 2008
Nintendo sponsored ‘Wii Parties’? I don’t recall that happening. So if Nintendo did not do that, but Microsoft did, I can’t see how Microsoft has copied Nintendo.
So what’s the difference between these types of parties and ‘Tupperware’ parties? The hosts of the Tupperware parties are given goodies from Tupperware. Are you saying that Tupperware are bribing the hosts? Because if you’re not, then why are you saying that Microsoft are bribing the hosts when they’re doing the exact same thing?
Come on Dave Parrack, leave your $ony bias at the door for once!

yes dave… get out of your Sony branded Tee Shirts and pants… and come join us in the real world… where money is printed by Nintendo Wii…

Yes, I must say I enjoy BK’s patties more than McDonalds.

Pizza Hut super supreme pan pizza (although they should never have gotten rid of the Priazzo Roma pizza pies they used to make).
So MS is trying to emulate the market leader, and Sony is trying to emulate MS. Isn’t this how competition works, by modeling what the guy ahead of you is doing?
360 and PS3 will probably not come close to Wii for two simple reasons: lack of simplicity (pick up and play, for the non-gaming masses), and brand identification focused on children and family. The majority of titles for the Wii and the Wii itself is designed around this philosophy.
360 and Sony can only release more titles (with simple controllers like Scene It or Buzz) for this audience, but they cannot change their consoles at this point. Another thing they could do is mass market the “classic/remote” old gen controller design for their Live and PSN titles, to make them less intimidating for non-gamers to pick up.

“We’ve already seen Lips, At The Movies, Avatars, and the New Xbox Experience.”
They do have a point though Dave, Sony should have been included in this by mentioning:
Singstar (ABBA, etc.), Buzz, Avatars, and Home. (not to mention tropies and ranking).

Pizza Hut? McDonald’s? Burger King? KFC?! Next you will be saying Subway.
You guys have no class. Or money (which is my excuse). When it comes to food, I’m a Marks and Spencer’s kinda guy.

You Sony Fanboys are pathetic.
THE ARTICAL IS HOW MS COPIED NINTENDO!!
Get that through you tiny minds.
It will take more than 3 games to make people buy the 360 for casual gaming.

…..and broadening a console’s appeal is bad how, exactly?
It’s not like the XBox 360 will no longer have it’s existing (excellent) catalogue of games any more.
Maybe I’m being blind here so I’d appreciate a little help Dave…..what exactly is it you’re trying to say?
December 23rd, 2008
I think the 360 is broadening its appeal just by price. Selling the POS arcade bundle with two games worth $30 together. Poor kids when they get that, and still need to drop another $100 on a HDD.
and btw. Singstar, and buzz have been in existence from the ps2 days. In a way you could call the ps2 the casuals machine due to its price and all the shovelware that came out for it.
December 23rd, 2008
Yeah but the PS2 had a lot of amazing games within all that shovelware.
All 360 games are just shovelware

phranctoast
What “$100″ on an XBox 360 hard drive?
Amazon USA lists the 20gb from $39.99
(and sell it new themselves @ $71.99)
They list the 60gb HDD @ (new) $89.99
and if you want to go bananas you can have the
120gb for $93 used or $143.99 new.
Come on, if you’re going to make a point about cost at least make it accurately.
Personally I like being able to choose whether or not to spend the extra on various features/accessories at the time of my own choosing, although I have bought most of the ones I find useful
(2 wireless controllers, 2 charging whilst playing packs, the wireless adaptor).
I’m also finding my new 60gb version has plenty of space
(even with adding a stack of games to the HDD).
You never know, maybe if the PS3 ever gets more than a few games I might be into I might even buy one of them, although I doubt it now that I’ve got a much superior Blu-ray stand-alone & I’ve jumped for the XBox.
A PS3 at current prices just seems such a pointless waste to me now.

I’ll drop the fanboyism if Dave & Mike would stop flaming the wars and write articles that we can all talk objectively about without the war. Dave is so two face as he say he is tired of the console war fighting and then go and goes and adds fule to the fire. These guys are like the Devil full of deceit.
December 23rd, 2008
But HH. Last years prices make it look so much better to my argument!!!
I’m sure I can be forgiven as kev still quotes the ps3 as being $600……
Regardless the point is they are fucking people over. Especially when I can get a 320GB HDD brand new for the asking price of their 20GB model

Yeah there is not need to pickup a PS3 for Bluray because stand alone Blurays are now going for $250. But I won’t do either because I’m satisified with DVD and I’m not a collector of movies. I hardly rent a movie and I’m quite satisified with my On Demand service I get from my cable company and the Movies I can get of the 360 as well as my Upconverting DVD Player. Besides who wants to buy Bluray Movies at those prices. I did buy Batman because it was so awesome I just had to own it but the Bluray was $70. That’s just crazy.
December 23rd, 2008
Happyhockum,
I think the point Phranc was trying to make is these people don’t realize how important an hdd is to gaming these days and that you have to buy the MS hdd. And that new ones are over priced.
ncaissie,
Actually the 360 has over 200 games for families and kids over the age of ten. Oh, how many times have I seen that commercial.
December 23rd, 2008
Pranctoast maybe just maybe your right but it depends on the topic.

If you never went online then what need is there to have a HDD? But it is better if you have one and they can be picked up cheap at Ebay and Amazon.
December 23rd, 2008
This whole thing that stand alone blu ray players being cheaper than the ps3 means the ps3 is redundant is nonsense.
Everyone has more than one DVD player be it in the laptop, desktop pc, PS2, PS3, 360, stand alone etc.
Over time, it’ll probably be the same with blu ray.
December 23rd, 2008
If you never go online, you just killed the most positive aspect that the 360 has going for it.
December 23rd, 2008
phranctoast,
The 360 is broadening its appeal by price and having twice as many highly rated games.
Selling the arcade bundle with two kid’s games worth $50 together is a good deal for their kids. When they get that and feel they need to move beyond the memory card included later on, they can always purchase the 20GB hard drive with a Gold Live membership for $30 from Microsoft.
It is too bad those “poor kids” you always like to mention couldn’t have a cheaper backwards compatible option with the PS3, so they could at least play all their old games they still enjoy after they sold their PS2 to afford the PS3 and a game at twice the cost of a starter 360.
Btw, Singstar and Buzz did start on PS2 and are now being hyped on PS3.
lock_down,
Especially those games from the PS3 once “exclusive” library, right? FFXIII?
Not to mention the multiplatform titles like RE5 and others. Yep, you are dead on, shovelware.
December 23rd, 2008
While it doesn’t affect me (I have a 60gb ps3) It does annoy me that Sony eliminated any Backward Compatible model. I know several people who still believe another model with full software emulation will appear and they are waiting on that. I don’t think that’s going to happen.
December 23rd, 2008
phranctoast,
If you never go online, you just killed one of the positive aspects that the 360 has going for it, just like you would with PS3 because of PSN, Home, and some more standardized online capabilities for their games.
Fortunately, even without Live, the 360 has more top rated titles overall than PS3, so one can still enjoy it without online capabilities.
Wylie 77,
“these people don’t realize how important an hdd is to gaming these days and that you have to buy the MS hdd.”
These people want a starter console for their kids that can play games, not the end all. You do not have to buy the MS hdd to play them, but you can purchase one for only another $30 if you desire play beyond those capabilities.
“Over time, it’ll probably be the same with blu ray.”
Over time, it’ll probably be the same with HD downloads.
December 23rd, 2008
Oh Carl, Carl, Carl.
Sure, Sony has lost exclusives, primarily because Sony fucked up for four years trying to work out what the PS3 would be.
But all Microsoft has done this generation is sponge off the titles from other studios.
Halo aside (and even that’s debatable), Microsoft Game Studios have come up with virtually nothing innovative to entice gamers to their system. Their studios are not putting in any effort to develop high quality games; unlike that of Sony’s studios.
Gran Tur…yeah, you know the list of games I’m about to reel out.
If MS game studios had produced some innovative titles then maybe I could cut the 360 some slack. But the reality is that MS has sponged off other studios and bought it’s (relative) success.
And you cannot level that argument at either the PS1 or PS2. Many great games for those systems came direct from SCE.
December 23rd, 2008
phranctoast,
Agreed on the backwards compatibility issue.
I see it as one of two ways:
1. Sony will put it back in when they completely phase out PS2. It would be cheaper to include at that time, and they would not have two competing consoles.
2. Sony will not put it back in regardless of cost because they stand to make more money from it’s customers by reselling the old titles over PSN.
Either way it is annoying, but probably the wisest in order for them to make the most money and sales in the long run, which is their claimed outlook strategy.
December 23rd, 2008
I’m well aware of how great online gaming is. MS enthusiasts spout how superior live is to psn. I need to point out that’s a null and void option with the gimped arcade.
I’m also well aware that their are more top rated 360 games than ps3 games. This just screams simple logic though. There are more games on the 360 as it was out a year earlier…..so logic would suggest there would be more top rated games. The same can be said about the more exclusives argument. Well….duh..it was out when there was no competitor console to put those games on so therefore they have more “exclusives” on the 360…..
At some point bragging about coming out first needs to end.
December 23rd, 2008
My PS3 has BC (software) and its pretty patchy.
If Sony want to update the PS3 via firmware to play PS2 games it will need to be better than it is was in early PS3 models.
December 23rd, 2008
Early ps3′s with BC only had the CPU emulated. The GPU of the ps2 was still there. If they did it now they would have to emulate it all. I don’t see it as being too likely.
December 23rd, 2008
“Halo aside (and even that’s debatable), Microsoft Game Studios have come up with virtually nothing innovative to entice gamers to their system. Their studios are not putting in any effort to develop high quality games; unlike that of Sony’s studios.”
good to see the ps3 fanboys are here today..
i guess GeOW, Forza, Splinter Cell, countless XBL arcade games, user created games, expanding features of xbox live, etc, etc, is not enticing?
are you kidding? ms created over 20 million xbox gamers from nothing, while the ps2 rode on the psx coattails, as the ps3 tried to do.
ms has brought more innovation to console gaming than sony and that’s a certain. otherwise, sony wouldn’t be trying so hard to catch up. please get some rest. you’re delirious.
December 23rd, 2008
Only the PS3 in the US had all the Emotion Engine hardware built in.
In Europe, the Emotion Engine was taken out and PS2 BC was all emulated by software (the one I’ve got).
And it’s dodgy.
I can see it being re-installed by firmware, but it will have to be better than it was in early models.
After doing 50 minutes of a mission on Black the whole thing froze. lock_down was spitting feathers!!!
Good job I didn’t throw the PS2 away after all.
December 23rd, 2008
I thought that would annoy kev
December 23rd, 2008
lock_down,
Agreed and no argument. MGS may not have as many quality games as Sony’s, but it is not relevant to me as a gamer. What is relevant is that the console I choose to play on has the most selection overall of quality games, including multiplatforms, and standardized features amongst all of them like achievements and gamerscore.
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to play MGS4, God of War III, Uncharted, KZ2 and Resistance, but the quality that is there or coming soon is not enough to make me buy the console at it’s present price in addition to the one I already own and need to catch up on already. (I still have some games I need to play on the PS2!).
I think the whole title issue was relevant during the first two years of this generation, when gamers had less options on their console of choice, but as time goes on it becomes less of an issue because more and more good titles are accumulating for each console. More than any one average gamer (with a job and wife, let alone kids and travel) can keep up with.
I see the same perspective from the PS3 owner’s side. Why bother getting another console for only Halo 3, Gears of War, Fable II, Dead Rising, Huxley, Alan Wake, and Mass Effect? The quality that is there or is coming out soon is not enough on either console to motivate most gamers who already have their hands full.
As far as Microsoft “buying” it’s success, I’m sure Sony would do so as well if it could afford to at this point, as they are not exactly in this for charity or to make gamers feel good about themselves, but rather to succeed.
December 23rd, 2008
GeOW….developed by Epic, not part of MS.
Splinter Cell…developed by Ubisoft, not part of MS.
Next.
December 23rd, 2008
Ill give you gears. Third Party however.
Forza is a GT ripoff. MS saw the GT sales and needed themselves some of that. pretty innovative.
Splinter Cell is third party and not exclusive. There has been plenty of ps2 versions and one ps3 version. The newest one was landed as a 360 exclusive.
I think everyone can agree that while the live arcade has more games psn games are a lot better.
PS2 rode the coattails and sold more than its predecessor.
December 23rd, 2008
“sony wouldn’t be trying so hard to catch up”
Yeah, because when MS needs to catch up it just bails a generation early and starts a new one with dodgy hardware.
December 23rd, 2008
burn
December 23rd, 2008
phranc – thanks for proving you know very little about xbox games.
MS saw the desire for a console sim and made one with Forza. The sad thing is; they unseated the GT series as the “king of console sims” (1up.com) in their FIRST outting.
the innovation was in the damage, car customizations, online features, and 8,000 MORE physics parameters than any GT game has ever had. (kaz stated GT games used 300 physics parameters for their calcs, while forza used over 9,000.) yes..innovative.. why stop there tho; you can say ANY racing game is not innovative since pole position.
splinter cell was an exclusive for some time on the xbox before it hit any other console and yes, MS brought it to market. innovation.
the fact that xbox live arcade has waaaaay more gamers buying their games than sony’s “arcade” games, it’s safe to say the gamers like them more as they have to pay. sorry, but the only one who thinks like you as far as quality as Ivan_PSP. not good.
ps2 included a dvd player, which helped the ps2 sell more than the psx. also, during the time sony refused to acknowledge the ps2′s dde and dre problems, gamers were FORCED to buy a second and third ps2 or send their ps2 gaming library into obscurity. that, and the $199 price point, is what made the ps2 sell so well. oh, and let’s not forget you sony fanboy’s excuse of “first to market”.
these are all commonly known facts. like i said, get some rest. you really, really need it.
the fact is; you stated ms brought nothing innovative to this market. i just proved you wrong. these titels were brought to market by the ms console. not sony’s.
December 23rd, 2008
lock down – if you knew anything of licensing agreements and IP laws, you’d know why (like everyone else) the xbox left the industry “early”. 4 years on the market is an average lifecycle… always has been. besides, with the lack of the ps3′s backwards compatability, the ps2 HAS to stay on the market. they have no choice.
December 23rd, 2008
Oooooo, we’re counting “timed exclusives” as innovation are we?
December 23rd, 2008
“4 years on the market is an average life cycle”
Huh, guess no-one told guys making the PS1, PS2 and the Game Boy.
December 23rd, 2008
Gears of War is an Microsoft game. Just because MS does not own a studios does not mean that they don’t own IP’s. When you start up gears is says Microsoft Game Studios. You see unlike Sony, MS only has two sutdios vs Sony with their many studios that they bought but yet their exclusives are lacking. Owning studios mean more overhead as a business. It’s probably one of the reasons Sony is loosing so much Money. They have become to fat. They should get the Wii Fit.
December 23rd, 2008
“with the lack of the ps3’s backwards compatibility, the ps2 HAS to stay on the market. they have no choice.”
The PS2 was released in 2000 and had full PS1 BC; but even so the PS1 continued to be manufactured until 2006.
Huh.
December 23rd, 2008
I like how you compare tech specs from a 360 game to that of a ps2 game. very clever. They wouldn’t have done it if not for GT series. No innovation.
Ubisoft brought splinter cell to market.
Your argument is like trying to say Sony is more innovative based on Metal Gear 2 being out on the ps2 before it made it to the xbox (bad port btw
)
please don’t compare me to Ivan…that was low.
kev. I believe you know that psn games are better than live games.. really..what does live have that interest me. castle crashers…..umm….hmm what else..pac man. Geometry wars was bitch slapped by super stardust hd anyway.
psn has calling all cars, which imho is better than any live game i’ve played. wipeout hd, warhawk…damn i could go on and on.
December 23rd, 2008
Phranc – regarding your arcade belief; this is what you said about other gamers, “There are more games on the 360 as it was out a year earlier…..so logic would suggest there would be more top rated games. ”
so with your logic xbox live is better because it has more.
ya, know… you make it too easy on us sometimes.
December 23rd, 2008
they don’t need wii fit CAD. they have eye toy kinetic…
December 23rd, 2008
Wasn’t the dreamcast first to the market? Just sayin’…
December 23rd, 2008
phranc – there are over 100 xbox live arcade avail and you names TWO. gawd.. lol…
metal gear was already on the market, whereas ms games that i mentioned were not. gawd you’re silly..
the first mgs game could be considered innovative tho.
ubisoft was approached by ms and thus is why ms has a timed exclusive with splinter cell.
um..i was comparing forza to GT 4…both last gen games….. gt4 = 300 and Forza = 9,000.
you must be new to this gaming thing…lol…
December 23rd, 2008
Now we compare mini releases to full fledged games. good job on that catch however.
still not true though. arcade is rubbish in comparison.
December 23rd, 2008
phranctoast,
I am not bragging here about how 360 is coming out first, because it and PS3 are both getting thoroughly spanked by an underpowered competitor.
I do not think online gaming is all that great, but I may be in the minority, as I enjoy single player experiences more, and the 360 suits me fine there, as I am sure a PS3 would another gamer who doesn’t care as much about achievements and gamerscore on all games.
Online gaming is a good option, but not for me personally. I do not understand how you think online gaming is null and void with the Arcade though, as you can still play those games online. It is with more complex games, but then they always have the $30 20GB hdd option
I addressed this in an older post, but here goes again:
“Total titles released per year per console rated at 80 or above (average MetaCritic Score)
2008
360 -47 (6)
PS3 -47 (15)
Wii -27 (17)
2007
360 -41 (10)
PS3 -32 (15)
Wii -10 (7)
2006
360 -31 (increase from previous year= 22)
PS3 -7
Wii -3
2005
360 -9
PS3 -0
Wii -0
Exlusives total:
360 -69
PS3 -26
Wii -29″
As you can see, only 9 titles fit the category in the launch year of 360, and 31 the next, so even adding these two years together and subtracting from the total still puts the 360 ahead by 3. The “year early advantage” argument is moot at this point.
What is valid is the rate at which PS3′s top rated titles has increased to catch up with the pace of the 360 this year.
If PS3 continues it’s pace of top rated titles, it could have 9-18 more titles than 360 next year. It may not matter at that point though, as they would still be behind overall, and a new console buyer may not be so meticulous in analyzing the release history and reviews for each consoles titles, let alone exclusives.
What I was trying to get at is that online capability is only one of many positive factors of the 360, as it is with the PS3.
On the backwards compatibility issue, I can see why a lot of people can’t understand why a processor as powerful as the PS3′s was hyped to be cannot emulate a past console accurately enough within two years of that console’s life to play loyal customer’s old discs well.
I think this capability was a key factor in PS2′s success, and can only hinder a PS3 that does not have it. At the very least it should be able to accurately emulate PS1. Of course, it can do that, as witnessed by titles being sold over PSN. Unfortunately, for some reason, it cannot read loyal customers old discs, only software over PSN.
December 23rd, 2008
Agreed Carl.
I think dropping hardware BC from the PS3 was a mistake in the long term; but in the short term it probably looked like a viable way of reducing the crazy cost of the PS3. But it took no account of how important it was.
BC obviously can be done by software; but it needs to be better; and work not just with games over PSN, but discs as well.
December 23rd, 2008
-I was harsh on bragging. not necessarily you.
-online games are great. I only have the capacity for one at a time though that I currently play.
-I saw your older post and used the number to make a point in the past.
Remember. the ps3 did not come out until Nov 11th of 2006. Very close to the end of the year. About a week short of being a full year after the 360 came out. By the time the ps3 came out there were 40 games already out on the 360.
If half those games are good, you have 20 games getting a rating over 80% adding to the more popular exclusive/more games argument.
I’m not debating that there are more games on the 360. Not debating that there are more exclusives. Just simply pointing out why.
I’m angry at the BC thing, but the selfish part of me realizes it doesn’t affect me. I do want Ico though. They need to release that on the psn.
December 23rd, 2008

BLORGE! – Please post a list of all exclusive games for ps3 and 360 on the left and right side of the screen respectivly.
Can we get a talkback without a huge list of fucking games for once
December 23rd, 2008
Domino Master is an exclusive??
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I’m fucking gutted. Life is ruined. I wouldn’t have bought the PS3 if I’d have known it was only on the 360.
Oh man, I feel like an idiot.
December 23rd, 2008
As for BC. Does it really matter to people THAT much? If I really REALLY wanted to play a PS2 game, ill go get it out of my basement.
I tried with Yakuza 2, but alas, sega’s ‘feature’ (yes i think it was listed as a feature…)of ‘authentic japanese vocals’ destroyed the game for me
Everything else I own I’m never playing again, ever.
December 23rd, 2008
was that all off the top of your head?
pretty impressive.
December 23rd, 2008
phranctoast,
You did see that part where I subtracted the first two years of games from the 360′s roster and it still came out ahead, right?
In looking at that, it seemed to me to take out your point of why it was ahead, i.e. “it came out a year earlier”.
I would like to be able to play Suikoden again, without paying an arm and a leg for it.
December 23rd, 2008
“still not true though. arcade is rubbish in comparison.” – over 100 million dollars through xbl arcade downloads and purchases says different.
December 23rd, 2008
SW,
BC shouldn’t really matter a lot if you rent, which is what I do now. But I used to be a huge collector, and if I had stayed in one place and bought a PS3, I would have loved to just pop a PS1 or 2 game into my PS3 to enjoy, without having a tangle of wires from an additional one or two systems (depending on the games, a few were not as bc as others).
It will probably mean less (disc reading wise, that is) as we move into the future, as many of these titles will continue to be sold ala “XBox Originals”, and within the next one to two generations game discs should go the way of the dodo, being replaced either by flash or online.
December 23rd, 2008
woops.. I see it now. I also realized I did show percentages in there when all the games 40…not 20 were over 80%.
December 23rd, 2008
I have difficulty seeing games going the way of flash. You have to imagine that any flash disc will be more expensive to mass produce than disc based tech (pressing).
December 23rd, 2008
Well, I will refrain from putting the list here, but the count is 41 rated 8 or above on IGN for 360 XBLA games. I couldn’t pull up a similar list for PS3 though. I’ll provide a hellacious link instead of the dreaded list for XBLA games rated:
http://xbox360.ign.com/index/reviews.html?constraint.max_rows=40&constraint.return_all=is_true&ordering.order=desc&constraint.not_null.article.overall_rating=is_true&ordering.attribute=article.review_date&constraint.locale=us&constraint.bool.game.xbl_arcade=is_true&sort.attribute=article.overall_rating&sort.order=desc
December 23rd, 2008
“- over 100 million dollars through xbl arcade downloads and purchases says different.
”
must I break out the Britney argument again?
December 23rd, 2008
Solid state stuff is getting cheaper every year tho phranc
December 23rd, 2008
SW we could list 360 and PS3 exclusives and find that PS3 had more, but xbots dispute facts.
December 23rd, 2008
I’m looking at flash prices four or more years down the road, not today. I am also combining the factor of decreased manufacturing cost without an optical drive.
Present day 8gb micro SD is about $15, and 16gb is about $45. Considering the rate at which these prices have decreased over the past few years, and the capabilities increased, it is easy to imagine them being one of the transition formats in moving towards full wireless over the next two generations.
December 23rd, 2008
Bourne,
Actually, just the link and total number would be fine. I would support it if you could find it. I may not be an xbot, but I do enjoy my 360, PS2, PSP, and DS.
December 23rd, 2008
phranc – the point is; gamers get to demo the arcade games and IF they like them they buy them. unlike britney spears cds.
keep reaching. the fact xbox live arcade has more games is given. the fact xbox gamers have bought heaps of these games prove they’re fun. thus proving your theory null… as usual.
December 23rd, 2008
Its a shame really.
If we used solid state devices, we could go back to the old days! We could save our save games on the ‘cartridge!’ (yes yes, we all have hard drives now!
but there was something cool about saving to the cart.
)
whilst stil having hi res. textures etc
December 23rd, 2008
I’ve seen noting on arcade that compares to the heavy hitters on psn. (wipeout HD, R+C:quest for booty, Siren, warhawk)
arcade is mostly filled with old school games. (dig dug)
Every now and then theres something good, and it more than likely ends up on the psn anyway.
December 23rd, 2008
the manufactures cost without the optical is good. Game developers have to foot the bill on all the flash they use though. If they’re $1 a pop to manufacture thats still more than optical.
Who knows though. we’re talking about the future.
December 23rd, 2008
later folks. have a good Holiday.
Off to see the Rappin Rabbi Matisyahu
December 23rd, 2008
The way things are going the future of games will be playing directly online with no need for Blu-Ray, flash or digital downloads.
You won’t need to download anything; games will be hosted on a server and you’ll play a game on the internet through the server and save a game on the internet etc.
All that’s needed will be a console to play them on.
That’s the future.
December 23rd, 2008
Is it true you cannot demo PSN games? That would suck.
December 23rd, 2008
lock_down,
As I previously mentioned, flash would be a back up and or transition format towards a download future. And you forgot wireless.
That is the future, and to some degree, we are already doing it today, but the phones and pc’s that utilize it still have physical memory as a backup.
December 23rd, 2008
wow… Ive been gone only for 12 hours… and lets see… so far…
we’ve discussed fast food joints… discussed how even though Gears of war and halo and splinter cell are made by 3rd parties… Microsoft still owns them…
kev looks like an idiot again because he compares forza to GT 4 or GT 5 prologue… which wasnt even a full game…
CAD wont give up trying to look like an idiot.. unless Dave Parrack and Mike Ferro stops rolling around in Sony money…
and… not one decent discussion on games… Im so proud of you guys… keeping your priorities straight… lets not talk about the games… lets talk about companies… their profit margin… hey… which one has a health care plan?? which company does random drug tests… lets talk about that… thats why we bought the $400 consoles right??
December 23rd, 2008
Well, whatever the future is, a fully digital download one better not be happening any time soon…my net connection sucks.
December 23rd, 2008
darkwhitehair,
Actually, I only bought my console to play games, exclusive, multiplatform, third party, first party, online, offline, old, and new.
Back on to games though, is it true you cannot demo PSN games? (I really don’t know)
And, has anybody beaten Fallout 3 yet and accomplished all the Trophies/Achievements?
FF Tactics War of the Lions rocks so far, btw.
And, I am currently looking at transferring a genesis emulator with about 500 roms off our share drive here to my laptop. Does anybody have any experiences good or bad with these? It seemed to work fine when I started Shining in the Darkness (yes!).
lock_down,
I think there will always be a backup in case. One of the wireless download capabilities I enjoyed in the states was my Amazon Kindle. I can only imagine that same wireless download anywhere capability with games on a handheld. Wait a second, I’ve already done that on the phone with Orcs and Elves, etc. nevermind.
December 23rd, 2008
‘thats why we bought the $400 consoles right??’
I purchased mine to play the things (sadly work forbids that right now
). You can talk about them and let them collect dust if you so wish.
December 23rd, 2008
Let me tell you about the future. It’s my foot up Kev’s ass. On a serious note, Kev please stop your Trolling. We have all become tired of you. You have nothing new to add. So why not just stop. I’m glad we are not talking in person, because if I heard you say “gawd” as often as you type it I would be annoyed into punching you straight up in the face. It’s obvious you don’t like the blorge, it’s writers, and anyone posting here. You are so far above us all you need to start your own site and leave this one alone! Thank You and have a nice day you Xbot, fanboy, Trolling Putz!
December 23rd, 2008
And a trend, the IPhone seems to be overtaking the PSP here as the gaming handheld of choice. Like it’s the new Wii of handhelds here or something. I wonder if it is just because it doesn’t have the same game stigma appearance as a dedicated handheld.
December 23rd, 2008
its true Carl… not all games have demos on the PSN… its a thing that LIVE does well that I hope is picked up by Nintendo and Sony… its like a standardization… you should have demos of the game before they come out… including downloadable games…
I dont want an MGS 4 demo 4 months after the release… I want it BEFORe it comes out… same with Dead space and gears 2… I know gears 2 didnt have open beta… did it have a demo?? cus cliffy b didnt want people to get a taste of gears 2 till the full game… but that only works with so few titles…
GAWD Wylie youre so naive… you know NOTHING ABOUT the games industry… kev is like Micheal Pacter… except… Pacter is actually respected among critics… and people actually like to listen to his opinions…
December 23rd, 2008
‘Back on to games though, is it true you cannot demo PSN games? (I really don’t know)’
Last time I checked there are various ‘trial games’ that you can ‘unlock’ when you purchase them.
Don’t think any demos exist for the ‘big hitters’ such as WipEout HD tho.
Goto Zophar.net if you need emulation software, for learning purposes or abandonware only, of course
. Most software is ranked by quality etc, but most of the decent genesis/megadrive emulators should be fine.
I don ‘t like the whole cloud scenario. That’s a terrible way for people like sony and ms to rule with an iron fist, destroy the used game market and do watever else they want.
December 23rd, 2008
Wylie77,
You made me laugh on that one, especially the “gawd” part, though I expect that maybe the reason he does it is to annoy.
I do think kev brings a few good points at times, though his delivery could use some work. But then again, I miss Ivan’s colorful prose at times as well
Whatever happened to the Future of Sega?
December 23rd, 2008
Sony need to hurry up and come out with a PSP Phone.
Hopefully they’ll start using OLED in them if they do to improve battery life etc.
Having Apple — a company which knows nothing about games, and has also launched a failed console– in charge of portable gaming is worrying surely.
December 23rd, 2008
I dont know.. SW… gamefly do a decent stuff with used games and renting games… its gamestop that fucks you up the ass…
just use gamefly and stop using gamestop… theres better deals on amazon and best buy and circuit city… whether new or old… vote with your wallet man…
December 23rd, 2008
NO MORE BRANDED GAME PHONES!!!
I want a fucking phone… not a games machine… gimme a phone that I can use without giving me a fucking “no signal” tune… if I want portable games… Illl buy a PSP or a DS… not a fucking half phone… half mp3 half shitty games machine…
Im so pissed kojima is making an mgs on the iphone and not the PSP
December 23rd, 2008
I havn’t been in a real gamestore for ages lol.
I hate those places, filled with little kids or worse, bearded 30 somethings… Just browsing the shelves, over and over and over….
December 23rd, 2008
darkwhitehair,
Hasn’t Michael Pachter usually been wrong lately? Oh, I see.
December 23rd, 2008
we dont even need gamestop… even 7/11 sells games now.. not to mention great deals on amazon..
check out http://www.cheapassgamer.com
aand youll see why…
December 23rd, 2008
actually carl… he is usually wrong… but he appears on ALL the episodes of Bonus Round… on gametrailers… which has to mean something..
December 23rd, 2008
SW,
Thanks for the tip. I think the cloud could be consumer and competition regulated rather well, if Amazon and other present digital download purveyors are any predication.
My favorite part about the gamestores is listening to the self appointed “experts” debate before launch.
lock_down,
Has anybody tried Skype on PSP yet?
I am thinking PSP4000 for the OLED, minus the scan lines of the 3000 (if they can bring the price down).
Apple seems to be learning from their mistakes in the past, and even the best can regress to be popular amongst the masses (Wii).
darkwhitehair,
I agree on GameFly, but I think we were sticking with the PSN titles. I know XBLA compilations have been released in retail, but not sure about PSN compilations.
Amazon is my number one stop online. Before they got bought by Gamestop it was EBGames. Fry’s is my number one brick and mortar. And http://www.cheapassgamer.com is my number one tipster.
I’ve watched them play games on the iphone… it just looks tight and smooth.
December 23rd, 2008
midnight in Iraq, goodnight all… and merry christmas eve (here).
December 23rd, 2008
Have a merry christmas CarlB. And be safe. Thanks for everything you do there.

“PS3 GTA IV runs at 640p with 0xAA, in comparison to the Xbox 360 version at 720p with 2xAA.”
“PS3′s Anti-Aliasing is cited as being the better of the two versions, even though the Xbox 360 has 2xAA. This could be due to the upscaling and post-processing effects smoothing the edges on the PS3.”
“it’s 1152×640p (and no AA) exactly like Halo 3, Perfect Dark [Zero] or Dark Sector PS3.”
” due to the post-processing effects the game employs (there’s a serious amount of stuff being done to the raw frame), the PS3’s lower resolution serves to mask a lot of the nasty after effects.”
“For example, look at the dithering on the signs in the background on those shots. A bit ugly on Xbox 360, but smoothed and blurred away on PS3, presenting a generally nicer look.”
“both versions run extremely well and at an almost locked framerate. There are certainly differences on paper, but many will find it difficult to notice them in the game”
http://www.ripten.com/2008/04/29/confirmed-gta-iv-ps3-is-not-630pits-640p/
Graphics wasn’t graded differently for this game, but it has on others (some in favor of PS3/others in favor of 360).
What gets me isn’t graphics, but this: would GTA IV on PS3 been graded down because it didn’t have trophies? Probably not, just like all the games that came before it, because they don’t count them as part of the gameplay on PS3 vs 360 versions that have Achievements.
Please, trophies/achievements are easily half of the gameplay on GTAIV, and arguably have some of the better moments. I guess that is why they figured to have them in all of their games starting next year, it is just unfortunate it was not done earlier.
December 24th, 2008
Sorry, I commented on the wrong post, it should be here:
http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/12/21/ps3-not-responsible-for-free-radical-troubles/#comments
December 24th, 2008
Wylie77, thanks, you too. Any plans?
Sorry for the comment above, it was a response to harry and dwh on the PS3/Free Radical thread.
December 24th, 2008
Hey I just found out Suikoden is on PSN for $4.99, which is yet another temptation for me to buy a PS3:
http://psp.ign.com/articles/940/940944p1.html
So what do you have to do to download PSN titles to your PSP to play? Is it a relatively easy process, and do the PS1 games come out looking alright on PSP?
December 24th, 2008
dwh – “kev looks like an idiot again because he compares forza to GT 4 or GT 5 prologue… which wasnt even a full game…”
i’ll type slow because you’re hard of reading. i don’t know how much clearer i can say it; GT4. altho GT5 uses the same engine as gt4 and same subpar physics calculations.
i think gamespot said it best when they said gt4 had “bumpercar physics”.
man, for you to ignore the truth this hard, this must’ve really hurt to have forza unseat the gt franchise as the most realistic console sim. ouch.
December 24th, 2008
dwh; i think you’re under the impression forza launched on the 360. is that correct?
December 24th, 2008
@CarlB
Sony has heard you wish list……
http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/940/940882p1.html
December 24th, 2008
Yep, I linked found it and linked it above as well, but thanks for thinking of me… and it’s the right move, especially if they can move the majority of their quality RPG’s on there for that low price.
Does anybody have any good experiences playing PS1 games from PSN on PSP? I remember reading a year back or so that it could cut off status readouts or make the images too small. I’m not sure, but it sounds like this would be a factor with PS1 RPG’s to PSP.
Also, VC games should be able to download to DS… I don’t know why they haven’t done this yet.
Anybody think MS will come out with a handheld anytime soon?
December 24th, 2008
kev… GT 5 isnt even out yet… GT 4… was in the PS2… its like comparing Halo 3 with Halo CE and saying Halo CE sucked cus it had crappy AI…
but that doesnt matter… doesnt matter who dethrones who… big question… are you having fun?? if yes… then the game is good… if know… its not good… simple… I never played GT… I dont like car sim… I like burnout better… so guess what kev… all that “simulation data packet kilojoules” crap… you can keep it…
cus no one cares…
December 24th, 2008
dwh – you sure change your stances pretty easy.
3
this is gibberish: “kev… GT 5 isnt even out yet… GT 4… was in the PS2… its like comparing Halo 3 with Halo CE and saying Halo CE sucked cus it had crappy AI…”
both forza and gt4 launched on last gen consoles. Forza, in their first outting, outclassed the GT series in every avenue. that’s gotta hurt.
i never brought up GT5 or prologue, that was you, genius….
December 24th, 2008
change which stance??? did I ever say I was a fan of sim games?? or did I say I love GT ???
as far as I know… you can keep you throne… Id rather play burnout…
