PS3 sleeper hit of 2009
The PS3 had a stellar video game lineup in 2008, but with 2009 in full swing, many PS3 gamers will probably be wondering what new game will blindside them this year. There are many big name sequels coming out this year that will obviously sell millions. However, I will take a look at the one game that I think will be the sleeper hit on the PS3.
There are many great games coming out on the PS3 that will probably sell millions such as: Killzone 2, God of War III, Uncharted 2, Infamous, Heavy Rain and Twisted Metal. However, the sleeper hit of 2009 for the PS3 is a game that just blindsides you without even see it coming.
I have to say Quantum Theory by Tecmo is my pick for the PS3 exclusive sleeper hit of 2009. I talked about this game before comparing it to Gears of War. Gears of War currently stands alone in its own specific genre. Yes, I know there are other third person shooters with cover system such as Uncharted. However, Gears of War is known for its gritty gory violence and slow cumbersome beefy guys that can’t jump.

The reason why Gears of War is so good is because it is like a summer action flick. It has all the right ingredients for the adolescent teenager: cursing, gore, senseless violence and over the top macho bravado. In a similar way, Tecmo aims to provide competition to Epic by crafting a game that falls into the Gears of War category.
In Quantum Theory, you control the massive gun-wielding dark hero named, Sid. The main character also has a female companion Filena (a la Resident Evil 5), that seems to be with Sid most of the time. Its a safe bet that there is a co-op mode considering the constant companionship.
Quantum Theory
Quantum Theory utilizes a unique cover system where the battle takes place in a ‘living tower.’ The environment is constantly changing to provide needed cover as well as taking away cover unexpectedly. The game follows the formula I outlined previously, with plenty of gore, and action. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that the game features an attractive female heroine wearing next to nothing.
Another reason I am sure this game will sell well is because it is being developed by Keisuke Kikuchi, who became famous for the Fatal Frame horror series. The series on the PS2 is considered to be one of the scariest horror games out there. I have high expectations from Kikuchi, just by looking at his previous work.
I am sure this game will sell a few millions even if there is no deep story. Lets face it, there is a huge fanbase of gamers that will just about buy anything as long as it looks cool and is violent. Expect this game out on the PS3 exclusively late 2009.

I won’t lie that looked good. If PS3 starts making more games like that then there might actually be a reason to own one. But that time won’t happen until there is a price cut and some more games like that showing a difference between the two.

CAD… they do make games that look that good.. even better… its called Metal Gear solid 4… and uncharted… and heavenly sword…
will not buy quantum theory unless it gets better than 8.5… we shouldnt encourage copy pastes… and a guy with uber heavy armor… and the devs CLAIMING they took it from gears… is fucking retarded…
make some new games…

DWH,
Just because a studio wants to get in on the same category as another game doesn’t mean its a bad thing.
Cliffy B. stated that he took the idea of a over the shoulder shooter from Resident Evil 4 and the cover system from Killswitch to make Gears of War.
Honestly, I want to seem more games developed for this specific category.

well I have no problem with games taking inspiration from others… Uncharted and GTA has Gears style shooting… and yet it manages to stay original…
this looks no way original… from the burly men in armor to the handgun on the woman which looks like it was taken from Halo…
Id rather have a port of Ninja Gaiden 2 on the PS3 than this from Tecmo… FPSs try to emulate Halo… thats why most suck… imagine if FEAR tried to be like Halo… it wouldnt be as good as it is…
I have no problem with the cover system… it should become a standard in shooters… but it shouldnt look like its ripping off Gears…
also nice to see you folks have opinions and are not just robots working for suits
can I interest you in a game of SSF2THDR ??

The video looks good but is there any real time gameplay footage in there? it’s hard to tell.
Having just recently finished Gears 2 I must say that God of War 2 on the PS2 is a far more better game, story wise, gameplay wise and graphics wise.
Sure Gears 2 was fun but once I’d finished it I was like “meh”. There were just to many “awe” moments in God 2 than in Gears 2.
So God of War 3 is where it’s at for me.

darkwhitehair,
You should buy Haze, I remember hearing something about it was going to be awesome, even though it didn’t get very good reviews. BTW, 75 on MC might be a better bet for you (Heavenly Sword and Folklore to name a couple), and you should always try before you buy.
I think the copy paste only happens occasionally when somebody exclaims “teh 360 has no good gamez!” or better yet, “teh PS3 haz more gooder games dan 360!”
Heaven forbid a dev could actually be influenced by “teh enemy’z” product: “copycatzorz!”.
January 3rd, 2009
Way off topic time. It was either lock_down or phranctoast (apologies to whichever one of you did not say it) who said that the 360 was ‘tanking’ in Japan.
I just took a look at VGChartz and noticed that there were approx 856,000 360s sold in Japan.
I then took a look at the European section and found something interesting;
807,200 PS3s sold in Germany
737,837 PS3s sold in Italy
515,718 PS3s sold in Scandinavia
409191 PS3s sold in Australia (not Europe, I know)
For a system that is apparently ‘tanking’ in Japan, it has sold more systems there than the PS3 has in some major European countries, which is apparently a Sony stronghold if some of the posters here are to be believed. Some food for thought.

Carl you lost me with your comment… I dont know whether that was serious or sarcastic…
the reason I like heavenly sword… and not haze… is because I know it is a good game… it is a solid slash em up…
one of the reason it got low scores was because it is 5 hours short… which is perfect for the $20 price tag… remember Uncharted got 7.5 from Gamespot… and I heard from The Hotspot that some guys thought 10/10 for GTA was too much… they wouldve given it an 8…
I guess it says something about the review scores… they arent always objective… most are subjective…
and Heavenly sword doesnt have the obvious faults that haze had… it has a decent story… I saw many of the behind the scenes footage and their voice acting and storytelling are really really good…
January 3rd, 2009
also if you were being mean to me then screw you carl…
January 3rd, 2009
carl… its not about copying from the “enemy”… I see every person in this world as my enemy… and therefore have no brand loyalty… but thats not the point…
its simple… if I wanted something like gears of war… I would buy the original Gears of war… not Quantum Theory… their efforts and “mad skillz” would be better put to use in a new IP…
though this game footage really makes me want to buy a 360 and Gears…
by the way… all you “other” people… hows Gears 2 multiplayer working out for you??? any problems??
January 3rd, 2009
darkwhitehair,
7.5 is still considered “good” in most review circles, including MetaCritic… and I was being sarcastic with Haze in order to make a point.
The thing some, if not most people (obviously not you or I) do not take into account with review scores, which would help to make them more objective, is that each game has it’s own genre and style, and if you really like or do not like that particular genre or style, the review score probably won’t match up. Another major factor is people tend to look down on “above average” scores, simply because they are lower. A lot of reviews can be subjective, which is why it is usually best to weigh the above factors and use aggregate review scores to aid objectivity.
In light of this, it is reasonable to see how Haze scored 55 (yellow = mixed reviews), while Heavenly Sword scored 79 (green = favorable reviews) on MetaCritic, and the difference could still be used to measure the relative qualitative difference between the two.
No, I was not trying to be mean to you, and I apoligize if I offended you.

OHH IM SO HAPPY WE ARE FWENDS AGAIN!!!

ohh.. and the Visa Playstation card offer is over on 31st December… sorry ‘tards… you were too late… not my fault you dont do the research before buying a system…
too late people… go home… its too late…
January 3rd, 2009
Quantum Theory, wow, how did I miss that one? Let’s hope it doesn’t do a “Haze”.
Are you people still going on about MetaCritic?
Hasn’t that ship sailed?*
*Numerous times
January 3rd, 2009
lock_down,
Actually, we were going on about reviews in general, and the value of aggregate reviews. darkwhitehair brought it back in port, and the seas remain calm.
Are you still going on about “Haze”?
Hasn’t that ship sailed?*
*Numerous times.
January 3rd, 2009
Carl, I believe you were the one who brought up Haze first in this thread.
And you brought up Haze in the other thread.
So I think on reflection it is you who is more obsessed about Haze than me.
January 3rd, 2009
lock_down,
read, “still going on”
January 3rd, 2009
Anyway, let’s agree about this, when something is still relevant, you can still mention it, if it applies.
Therefore, when I speak of aggregate reviews, they still apply to the discussion, and usually is in direct response to somebody else’s comment.
Then, when you ooze sarcasm in your comment, you should not be too surprised to get one in kind about your relevant statement to the discussion.
January 3rd, 2009
I was not oozing sarcasm, but rather stating a fact in which that the majority of discussions about games on these boards result in reams and reams of games being listed from MegaCritic that have a particular rating, after an argument has ensued about which particular games have which particular rating.
I did not once mention, reference to, or imply anything you personally had said about MetaCritic.
January 3rd, 2009
Sorry for misreading your sincerity in saying “Are you people still going on about MetaCritic? Hasn’t that ship sailed?* *Numerous times”. If it has been mentioned numerous times, that might mean that is at least a somewhat relevant factor to the discussion. Tools like these tend to end such arguments, as they are a point of reference.
I happened to be the only one here who mentioned it, therefore I took the above statement was in response to me when you stated, “Are you people still going on about MetaCritic?” I am sorry, but who else could you mean if I was the only one who mentioned it here?
January 3rd, 2009
I was referring to MC posts generally, across many threads from many different people.
Anyway, let’s call it quits. We’ve already taken this misunderstanding far too far.
January 3rd, 2009
lock_down,
Agreed. So what do you think the sleeper hit of PS3 will be in 2009?
January 3rd, 2009
Well, I want the sleeper hit to be a game that has not even been officially announced; but I desperately want to see the new ICO game announced, if not released next year.
Signs seem to point to the fact that one is being developed, and I really want to see a Team ICO game get not just the recognition — they’ve already had that — but the sales that they deserve.
It is criminal that the first ICO didn’t even sell 1 million copies.
In games that have been announced, I think Heavy Rain could be the biggest sleeping hit, even though the general synopsis and premise are suitably documented.
But it is the overall mystery factor that I think could lure more people into it. In God of War you slash and hack, in Gran Turismo you drive cars; Heavy Rain hasn’t really disclosed anything concrete about gameplay or the genre.
I can’t wait for it.
January 3rd, 2009
BOURNE!! AYE BOURNE !! you lil rat… I killed raging beauty… killed that bitch… WOO HOO!!! was there supposed to be a specific way to kill her??? I just sat in cover and shot at her… seemed pretty easy…
lock down… Im guessing Heavy Rain is an adventure game… like the olden days… cus Indigo Prophecy was one… and the devs claim that they are making a mature game for a mature audience… Im guessing a good story and an adventure game… day 1 buy for me… I never played olden style adventure games…
althought I never played Ico.. I did play Shadow of the Colossus… and its nice to see that they are making games according to their styles… even though they werent financially successful…
though I have heard Heavenly sword wont get a sequel… cus it sold around 300 000 copies… and ninja theory and Sony’s relationship have soured a lil… I hope they make PS3 games… but rumor is they are going multiplatform…
BUT back to mgs 4… so fucking awesome…
does anyone feel that the code names are riddiculous??? I can handle Raiden and Snake… but big mama and big boss is where I draw the line… the story is so mature and yet when they talk about big boss and big mama… it makes me laugh…
January 3rd, 2009
I saw some gameplay footage of Heavy Rain a few months back, it reminded me a lot of Dragon’s Lair in the 80’s arcades, or Cobra Command on the Mega Cd. It may look pretty, but other than that, I can’t say that I was impressed.
January 5th, 2009
I think Demons Souls will be the sleeper hit on 09.
January 5th, 2009
I have to admit… Quantum Theory looks pretty amazing, but I am hesitant because the characters, controls, and art direction look too close to GOW. My bet is it will be amazing…. or mediocre.
I’ve heard mixed things about Demons Souls. We’ll have to wait and see. Heavy Rain, I’m not sure of just yet either. I have never played Indigo Prophecy… but I think I have a good idea of what to expect. If the story and characters are truly amazing, then I’m interested. If not, that kind of game could get very old, very quickly.
January 5th, 2009
I don’t like the look of the 2 characters in this game at all. Very forgettable in my opinion.
If we are still talking about Haze, I would like to say the yellow helmeted chaps were pretty memorable, so that is a thumbs up for Haze. Go Haze. Woo.
January 6th, 2009
Haze II is the sleeper hit of 2009!
January 6th, 2009
There goes Carl, talking about Haze again…
January 7th, 2009
Sorry… LBP II sleeper hit of 2009!
