Sony talks up PS3 and sticks it to Wii, Xbox – Flamebait?
Anyone who follows the games industry closely will be more than aware of some of the dirty tricks and underhanded marketing campaigns from the hardware manufacturers. But Sony seems to have gone further than most now, with a press release almost dismissing the Xbox 360 and Wii, and talking up the PS3 as the only console worth owning. Does this count as flamebait?
I am often accused of writing flamebait articles here on Gamer.blorge. For the initiated, flamebait is a forum or blog post designed purely to invoke a comments war amongst the fanboys of the various consoles. I’m not denying adding certain twists or opinions to articles in order to spark debate, but surely when my business is traffic that’s justified to some extent? Regardless, I wonder what Sony’s excuse is because its latest press release smacks of pure flamebait aimed at Microsoft, Nintendo, and their legions of fans.
According to Eurogamer, SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) recently sent out a new press release comparing the three home consoles. Sony is obviously reeling from the preliminary sales figures for the 2008 holiday season which shows the PS3 doing rather badly against the mighty Wii and steady Xbox 360.
[The PS3 offers] the most features and functionality out of the box [with] no immediate need to upgrade anything.
The Xbox 360 and Wii offer a set of features in their own right. However, when you take a look at the feature offerings side by side, there is only one true winner in delivering total value and price.
The Xbox 360 requires additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices, putting a burden on the wallet, and adds clutter to the entertainment center.
The Wii’s lack of enhanced features comes at the expense of a comprehensive entertainment solution.
The PS3 is the perfect example of a product featuring superior technology and a sophisticated design creating an ideal all-in-one entertainment product.”
As PS3 continues to evolve without the need for additional parts or expenses, expect the competition to continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones’.
While what Sony says is factual and cannot be argued any other way, how it is all explained seems very antagonistic. The last part about “peddling add-ons” seems like the language of the playground rather than a professional consumer electronics company. In fact, whoever wrote the press release could do a very good job here at Gamer.Blorge.
Sony talks up the fact that the Playstation 3 has Blu-ray, Wi-Fi, and a hard drive without paying any notice of the fact that gamers didn’t ask for, and don’t necessarily want any of these things. Sure, the Wii suffers from a lack of a hard drive, but is anyone really all that bothered by Blu-ray and Wi-Fi as standard? The current sales figures would suggest not.
I can’t help thinking that Sony would be better off spending time fine tuning its marketing strategy rather than needlessly kicking sand in the faces of its competitors. How about concentrating on figuring out how to cut the price of the PS3 before it’s too late. Then again, the price is only as high as it is due to all those extras such as Blu-ray in the first place.

The usual bunch of nothing.
There’s the typical appeal to snobbery aimed at the Wii – which those pesky consumers just won’t/don’t listen to, veru funny that.
But notice how even they keep the carping at Nintendo to a minimum, cos they are so far out of sight trailing the Wii, and they just look stupid banging on about that too much.
So they aim mainly at XBox 360.
Which they also trail, and by a whole heap there too, especially after this year’s price cuts – especially the big one last sept – & the successful X-Mas the XBox 360 has just had.
So what have they got to shout about?
Being honest about it?
Not much I’d say.
Blu-ray?
Hardly.
Blu-ray is now a busted flush for the PS3 what with more and more standalone players that are much cheaper and to the full Blu-ray spec (profile 2.0).
It used to be the best and cheapest Blu-ray player out there, that is simply no longer the case.
In fact their including Blu-ray is now a handicap.
If you do not want Blu-ray – say you already have a Blu-ray standalone – then you are being forced to pay a lot extra for a ‘feature’ you neither want nor need.
Wi-fi?
As if.
You don’t need the (admittedly rather costly for what it is) Microsoft wi-fi adaptor to go on-line with XBox.
Any old wireless router you have knocking about or any form of cable or cable router
(btw those plug jobs that turn your household electrical ring main circuits into network cables are excellent for this)
will do the job just fine.
The rest of their pitch is just their usual PR waffle that repeats their usual one-eyed BS which revolves around & counts on everyone thinking that they have to pay top dollar for every extra optional piece of hardware available for the XBox 360 and ignores every excellent bundle deal still out there.
Unfortunately for Sony & the PS3 too many XBox 360s (and their owners) are out there & know the truth about this.
The final thing that just has to be mentioned is the most important –
*they’re no longer promoting their own product on the basis of it’s features and attractions.*
You know they are deep in the shi*ter when they are reduced to this kind of obvious and pathetic bashing of their competitors products.
At this rate I’d be surprised if PS3 (as we currently know it) has 3yrs left in it nevermind that 10yr BS.

I hope your make a post that long next time ms makes a chest beating press release.

hey all you guys… how many of you use gamefly?? I was thinking bout using gamefly… we should all gamefly like one game… and then play it togather…
what should I get as my first game?? I was thinking of warming up to FPSs before killzone 2… maybe… COD 5?? or R2??
damn…
January 9th, 2009
DarkWhiteHair,
GameFly rocks. Gears of War is a good starter.
kevo,
good point, but you can still play the majority of XBox games on the 360… not so much PS1&2 on PS3 since they took out BC on PS3.
“putting a burden on the wallet, and adds clutter to the entertainment center.” -yes, $30 for a 20GB hard drive could be considered a burden on the wallet by many, and adds so much clutter. Much better to spend $150+ more for stuff you do not need to play good games.
“PS3 is the perfect example of a product featuring superior technology and a sophisticated design creating an ideal all-in-one entertainment product.” This is classically the model for the most successful game console, right?
January 9th, 2009
dammit carl… I dont have a 360.. dont toy with me… wont buy it till I have enough money to get like 20 games with the 360… I already have a list… hehe…
January 9th, 2009
Good. It’s about time some truth came out there. They should have these charts in stores to help the uninformed.
I guess it’s only OK when MS rips on the 360 but, when we see the other way around, it’s time to cry foul. Gotta love the hypocrisy.
-Wifi in the ps3 also serves the PSP. It would difficult to remove, but hey….they removed BC.

*when MS rips on the PS3*
January 9th, 2009
People have been bringing up these points on the internet since the PS3s release. They are all valid points and do help to show the value of the PS3. It’s nice to see Sony finally acknowledge them. I honestly they think they should start doing a better job of getting this message out to the masses. Most people will never hear of this press release. Like I’ve said before, Sony should start running an add campaign similar to Apple’s. They should really start drawing comparisons between the 360 and PS3 and make the PS3s selling points better known.
DWH – Get R2 and we’ll play co-op. I’m like a level 12 medic. We’ll kick some Chimeran ass. And I’ll probably be getting Kill Zone 2 the day it’s released.
January 9th, 2009
IIRC there are over 400 mk1 XBox games that are playable on the 360.
That’s a hell of a good showing (should we mention the, as it turned out laughably hypocritical, PR BS Sony used to put out about it?).
If there is an XBox 720 in 2010 I’ll be happy about it because after what they did with the mk1 XBox games I can see no reason why most if not absolutely all of my XBox 360 games will not work on it.
In fact considering the enormous & vast gulf between where PCs are now
(CPUs & GPUs & RAM) and any of the current consoles (yes, including the XBox 360 – and the PS3)
I’d love it if we got a new XBox in 1 – 2 years time.
….and something with say the equivalent of a
* 1gb ATi 4870 or a 1gb Nvidia GTX280,
* 2gb – 4gbs of DDR3 – DDR5 RAM,
* even a cheap quad core Q8200 allied to
* a nice inexpensive SATA 500gb HDD
would be incredible compared to what is on offer today
(and would go a long way to complete the move to unify PC & console gaming which must favourably cut Dev’s costs which should ultimately be a good thing for all of us).
Now if that was to start off at $800/£425 I’d be in like Flynn.
January 9th, 2009
Yep, when MS flames Sony, it’s all good.
When it’s the other way around though…
January 9th, 2009
jesus fucking christ people… you are now going to argue whether a man working for a company talking shit about another company has any valid points??
seriously… stop this bitching… you think the guy who made the comments cares?? no… its all PR… they spin it like they want to… if they actually cared… they wouldve put this in a kick ass ad and shown it on TV…
and dave… I really think you can do better than writing about stupid subjects like this… I already all the news from other blogs… and since its more personal here… I think you should keep it a personal blog… how bout some more reviews… or just impressions or criticism…
January 9th, 2009
Nah lock_down, it’s just typical arrogant Sony.
Stringer was at it for years before this latest piece of Sony stupidity.
Anyone remember the idiocy of the pathetically laughable Sony BS that claimed “the next gen starts when we say so”.
If you really want to pretend it’s an even game then go find me the Microsoft equivalent of that one.
You can’t.
You cant’ because for all their faults (and they have many) Microsoft have never been so snobby, totally up themselves, so boringly arrogant & pompous.
The point stands.
You know Sony are realising how bad things are when they stop trying to sell their own products on the basis of their own merits and are reduced to taking a (very weak actually) bash at their competitor’s products.
It’s just so lame.
Unfortunately for Sony they are becoming more and more known for their BS & their underspec and/or over-priced products.
The illegal rootkit fiasco shows only too well what sort of ‘players’ they are when it comes down to it.
Always trying to force their proprietary systems – even if it means acting illegally & against the consumer’s interests.
(and they got off lightly, had private individuals done that rootkit BS they would have gone to prison for it)

lock_down,
I believe this was just a little worse than the Greenberg interview. For one, Greenberg was asked directly how MS would respond to Sony’s promises that had not yet been delivered on (still). This is a press release from SCEA (not one person), planned and prepared by professionals with even worse verbiage and more time. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a nice picture of a fat Sir Stringer in this Blorge article looking like he was peddling drugs in the form of his chip either, and nobody is calling him or Sony a “vitriolic flamebaiter”.
The difference is you would think a company could stand on their own product’s strength, instead of making up things about the 360 (“the XBox 360 REQUIRES additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices” – really, how is it that I haven’t had to spend a dime extra on it in three years in order to play games on it?), especially in a press release. It really does smack of desperation and unprofessionalism in a press release. If MS had prepared a press release specifically stating Sony was “peddling” an overpriced game console that included things the average consumer does not want, need, or wish to pay for, then maybe I could understand your point (except at least this statement would be more accurate). And it really is too bad this “all-in-one” “superior” technological “entertainment product” can’t provide BC, but can still manage to “peddle” those same games on PSN without a problem. The difference is Sony’s PS3 promises:
1. 1080p HD games (2005)
2. Cheaper to develop for than PS2 (2005)
3. “Almost perfect backwards compatibility”(2006)
4. “Ample supply of 60GB PS3″ for the future (that’s also BC)(2007)
5. Online Cell storage, that also refines movie files from SD to HD. (2005)

January 9th, 2009
wasn’t it only last month that MS was ripping on Home?

’5. Online Cell storage, that also refines movie files from SD to HD. (2005)’
You mean the 360 doesn’t do this?!?!? BWHAHAHAH.

when one insults competitors from last place, it always reeks of desparation.
January 9th, 2009
phranctoast,
Were they “ripping” on them or actually stating specifics. Specifics. That would have been a wonderful addition to this press release.
SW,
wow, you managed to pick 1 out of 5 you could actually crack a joke on… good for you.
January 9th, 2009
kev,
It’s like a guy you just beat up, and he’s on the ground, trying to kick back at you and crying at the same time. He doesn’t really make much sense because he can’t talk clearly through the snot and tears.
January 9th, 2009
It is a true statement that to bring the 360 comparably up to where the ps3 out of the box you need to spend some money.
Maybe “peddling” is a bit strong.
I’m waiting for the no controller version of the 360 for $175.
January 9th, 2009
phranctoast,
I’m waiting for the no controller version of the PS3 for $398. You know, because “it costs too much to manufacture” after they managed to magically do it already.
January 9th, 2009
Hey, anybody else watch “Dexter” here? That show rocks.
January 9th, 2009
If it is such a weak bash why are you bots so pissed about it? Just curious. I would of thought your arguments would of been more suited on Sony’s past. If you look at the PS2, Sony was the one peddling add-ons. With the memory cards, multi taps, and what not.
Back to this press release, I would say they just used a bad choice of words. It seems to me they were trying to once again make the point that if you want your 360 to match the PS3 you would need additional add-ons and upgrades. For people like myself that want more than just a gaming console it is the superior product. Maybe I’m not the “average consumer” but the PS3 delivers what I want and is worth every penny I spent on it.
January 9th, 2009
And the files are in 1080p without Blu-Ray… impossible!

and happy… I really dont care what they have to say… my life doesnt revolve around video games or video game companies…
yeah I guess that rootkit really made the ps3 sucky huh?? the japanese people made Final fantasy multiplatform just because of the Sony rootkit…
again… if you feel so passionately about this topic… email Sony… I listened to Major Nelson podcast and heard the Microsoft CES presentation… and didnt think the guy who came up first was any good… I got bored… but Im not gonna give them shit about it… they have people to do that for them…
January 9th, 2009
and all those stuff included in the PS3… the blu ray and the wifi and the hdd… yeah that is important to me… I like to get the most out of everything I buy… the complete package… I know many dont… perhaps many dont want to pay for the complete package… I will…
still feel shitty about the BC thing… this means I have to get another one if the slim ps3 gets BC

You couldn’t be more mistaken.
First of all I’m no-one’s “bot” (except maybe my Mrs’s but that’s hardly appropriate for here
) and second I find it really funny, I couldn’t be less “pissed” about this if I tried.
Like I said, the misinformation & use of their PR people to attack the competition instead of promoting their own products on the basis of their own merit tells a pointed story.
lock_down
You mightn’t like to hear it but rootkit told (some of us at least) everything we needed to know about a company like Sony.
It’s a fact & they did it.
I’m not making anything up or being biased about it.
January 9th, 2009
Ah screw Sony they are full of it. They tell pure lies. Over the holidays I was looking to buy a camera and I narrowed my options down to a Sony and a Cannon. Ironacally I can’t believe I was even considering the Sony. What had me sold for a moment was the 1080P badge they slapped on the camera. One sales rep told me it records in 1080P making me believe that was the truth but then oter Reps told me that was not the case. That it only meant that it can be shown on a 1080P TV. Sony and their decptions. All cameras can be shown on a 1080p TV. My previous camera showed fine and beautiful on the HDTV and that was a Panasonic Lumix. My other decision was a previous Sony camera I had died all of a sudden and others at the store including the reps said that Sony cameras have a tendancy to die. I went Cannon which was the smarter decision. Sony is full of deception no matter what they’re up to. I heard that before 1080P TV’s were truly 1080 Sony use to slap the FULL 1080P Badge on the TV when the native resoloution was not 1080P. Liers
January 9th, 2009
jesus christ CAD… THIS IS A GLOBAL CONSPIRACY!!
you know what… PR is always bullshit… even if it is true… pretend its bullshit… they are trying to sell the product.. .and they will sell their soul for it… whether its Sony Microsoft or Apple…
and… dude… dont blame your stupidity on the sales rep or a sticker on a camera… there are hundreds of sites that can help you choose a camera… choose the cheapest one… and warn you against crappy ones… I asked a salesman whether a laptop could play Crysis on medium… I bought it.. and it cant even play Halo 2 on fucking low graphics…
then again… I would sell my mothers soul for a sony bravia… ohh yeah
January 9th, 2009
Wylie77,
Actually, I’m kind of angry because I really like my PS2 and expected more from Sony by now. I just haven’t bought a PS3 yet because
Sony hasn’t delivered on half of their promises with it. And I think if somebody was really “pissed” they would be hurling accusations like the PS3 fans were in response to the Greenberg interview, calling Sony a “vitriolic flamebaiter”. Instead, we just look at the two examples and compare them. This one seems to come up short in the specific facts category.
And for Sony’s past, I love PS2′s backwards compatibility and game library in comparison to the XBox. Too bad they haven’t been able to do the same by now, but maybe in a few more years we’ll see it (though I doubt it). I never did get a multi-tap, and a memory card was already a standard for sony from the previous gen. I agree with you though, and if they wanted to make that point, all they had to do was address it specifically, like, “in order for the 360 to match the PS3′s capabilities, extra add-ons are required”, instead of “the XBox 360 requires” them.
I think most PS3 owners think the same as you do in order to justify their purchase. This isn’t a bad thing, just human nature. Even the “own all three” owners have this factor. Because you (or they) wait the extra time and spend the extra money, you take advantage of what differentiates the PS3. Right now that is a larger standard hard drive (on the “core” models), Blu-Ray, and wireless capabilities. You then may spend more money on Blu-Ray movies, online purchases to fill your hard drive, or start renting Blu-Ray. The 360 owner will probably not care that much about Blu-Ray, wireless, or HDD size or they will find suitable alternatives if they do.
January 9th, 2009
I’m just waiting for a 360 that actually works.
January 9th, 2009
also Vista is a LOT better than XP… because Microsoft told me so and all the other PC magazines are in the bag for apple… XD
still I like the style of vista… gets my job done… just no good with games…
January 9th, 2009
Aww Carlb, why so serious all the time
I don’t care what features my PS3 has/had/was promised – I just thought that was the most insane of them all.
Now if only the 360 didn’t have such a high failure rate!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111oneone thats something to brag about!
January 9th, 2009
wait carl… you dont have a ps3?? wait what???
anyways… I pray to all the gawds… including kratos… that I can get BC on my PS3 with a simple patch… I would sooo love that… please gawd… please…

Cameras are a field where the BS just runs in rivers.
Lumix cameras are fine pieces of kit, not just cos of the decent spec and any acronym nonsense plastered on the sides (for the easily led & shallow of ‘thinking’) but because they have high quality lenses.
Far too many people forget that a camera is primarily all about quality of the lens and any electronic trickery is very much secondary (which is why my old 2 megapixel FZ2 Lumix takes much better pictures than my mother-in-laws 7.5 megapixel camera).
dwh
You’re well out of date with that bash.
Vista got a lot more like it after sp1.
Personally I have not bothered with it myself (my upgrade sits in it’s cellophane still).
Mostly cos my XP media ed works so well for me right now.
I will upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes (probably after the sp1 of that) simply because driver support for any new devices will force the issue.
January 9th, 2009
I like dexter… I like to pretend to kill fanboys in my spare time… I bet no one would be able to catch me… or really care if they were gone…
MUAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHA
also… guys… havent you heard of torrentz?? why bother with HBO??
January 9th, 2009
Yeah, what is Sons of Anarchy like?
It should be good seen as it’s written by the same person who wrote episodes of the awesome The Shield.
January 9th, 2009
darkwhitehair,
you big goof. But you’re right, BC is the biggest factor for me, if not price. The next will be seen this year, if Sony’s other promise with trophies standard on all games released pans out. How is that working for you all, anyway? Are the “trophies” always the same as “achievements” on multiplatform titles? I know they were on GTAIV, but just curious. Do you have to go in Home to view them or can you view them from the XMB? Do you have a ranking system like 360′s gamerscore?
January 9th, 2009
sure happy… Im out of date… you got any proof that vista sp1 works more efficiently than xp?? cus PC world and many other sites say otherwise…
just because I dont bitch… doesnt mean I care… after all… I do have the product…
January 9th, 2009
very simple carl… trophies can be accessed from the xmb…
I havent checked with the 360 achievement sites.. so I dont know whether ps3 and 360 have the same achievements…

January 9th, 2009
Dave Parrack ,
I hope you read this, all the PS3 GAMES ARE BLU-RAY!!!!!, if you omit the blu-ray feature then you won’t play any games and you loose disk space, what format do you prapose they use to put games on? why do you think mgs4 was so good, and why it won’t be ported to xbox
DISK SPACE, that is what xbox360 failing point is its stuck on an old disk format
January 9th, 2009
I thought I heard somebody mention “ranking” before in relation to the trophies… is that true? How does that work?

Oh, not you too Branden.
Put Xbox 360 and Blu-Ray in the same sentence and you’re asking for trouble…
January 9th, 2009
Branden,
Don’t forget PC too, and all those latest games for the best videocards… they don’t seem to be in Blu-Ray yet. I don’t think anybody here was calling for a Blu-Ray-less PS3 though. Maybe when the downloads get more popular towards the end of it’s lifecycle it will be an option in the slim. Remember, where there’s a will, there is a way… to make files large enough to only fit on Blu-Ray. From what I hear, MGS4 was so good because of gameplay, not file space or hours worth of 1080p CGI scenes.
January 9th, 2009
dwh
You can find lots of people saying the Vista SP1 is a big improvement.
You can also probably find more than a few saying nay too.
I suspect I know who you choose to believe (strictly on the basis of knowing and trying all the other alternatioves out, right?).
January 9th, 2009
well I am surprised that Microsoft did not buy HD-DVD from toshiba, for its xbox-360 make the drive internal and make all games on that format, and walla you have double the disk space and games like MGS4 could be proted, and square enix games could be on a single disk again, as it stands how many disks do you think it will take to get FFXIII on the xbox360
Sony is loosing because developers are only porting to ps3 that is why many games run smother on the xbox360 because games where optimized on the xbox360/PC, it seems like all multiplatform games give the shaft to the ps3
January 9th, 2009
mmm hmm happy… Sony pays for my rent and all my abortions… thats why I hate vista and microsoft and still have a vista laptop…

January 9th, 2009
ok branden… stop stealing my fucking idea… I wrote that right here a LONG time ago..
seriously…
but a MS rep has said… if they take on a new format now… they would divide the 360 owners… between people who have a hd dvd drive… and those who dont…
also… a long time ago… I heard this bioshock dev guy… talking about the formats… and said that more hard disk space is the last thing they have to worry about…
now I know that its gonna take a while before ALL games need more disk space… but many games already need more than 9 gb space… games like Lost Odyssey and Forza 3 and MGS 4…
as long as they push the boundaries and make us better games… I think its a win win for everyone…

Blu ray is needed at all.
If Konami really wanted to port to the 360 (maybe they do but sony has it locked down) then they would. It would just mean clever arranging of assets spanning over a few discs.
Blu ray is not really a big deal, it was a way to push the format and gives the ps3 an extra badge (or price hit, if you wish to view it that way). I have never, nor ever plan to play a single blu ray movie in my ps3. I would rather download HD stuffs and move it across from ps3, 360, to PC.
January 9th, 2009
heh *blu ray ISN’T needed.
January 9th, 2009
hey you know what… Id be the first one to buy MGS 4 on the 360… Id be fucking proud… sometimes… you just need to experience a good game… and you want to share it with everyone…
fuck you all who say its more of a movie… that does more for storytelling in a game in the last coupla years…
just because you dont like it doesnt mean its not good… damn… I love you metal gear…

Blu-ray or some large capacity media is needed
both Resistance 2 and MGS4 and I am sure some of the newer games coming out almost used the entire 50gb disk space!!!! even the creater of mgs4 stated the blu-ray was to small at one point!!! do a search, I am not behind sony or blu-ray but the fact is newer games will need larger capacity media and even PC will show this, there are already cheap blu-ray drives for the PC

yo DWH i personally would stick with the call of duty series but ill go out on a limb an say R2 an its better if u have a dualshock cause it makes up 4 the 60 player deathmatches.

Branden,
Witness all the other 1080p games, and what a huge difference that makes in the quality of gameplay and the game itself, PC or console. It is a nice to have. MGS4 is a game that could have been made for PC or 360. Instead it was made as the showcase title for the PS3. As such, the dev’s insured that it used the PS3′s strongest differentiation from the competition – Blu-Ray, by maxing out filesizes. Does anybody know what a non-compressed movie file size is before it goes to Blu-Ray or DVD? Ridonculous, that’s how big (sorry I am being lazy right now in not looking it up, but it is ridonculous).
SW,

CarlB.
True Blood is really good. It keeps you guessing on where they are going with the story. I have found that people who love vampire movies either love it or hate it. It’s different than any other vampire show I’ve ever seen. Plenty of mystery and guessing. Quick premise, it’s about vampires coming out and trying to be excepted in the human world. True Blood is a synthetic blood that Sony invented and is sold in bottles at bars, gas stations and so on for the vamps to use as food instead of humans. OK maybe Sony didn’t invent it, but it was the Japanese!
Sons of Anarchy is a mix of reality and there is no f***ing way they would get away with that. But that’s what makes it fun. The season started slow (due to introduction to all the characters) but progressed nicely. I have read that it is based on the play Hamlet with some twists so that you can’t guess who’s going to get whacked or what’s coming next.

Wylie77,
Dude, if Sony can invent the optical disc, they can invent synthetic blood!
January 9th, 2009
and also wylie77 ps2 had add on an did great cause ms lost $$ on putting hard drives on the xbox so juss discontinued it…they prolly should of done that with the 360 but oh well…..

Uncompressed 1080p high definition movies (analogous to ’2k’ movies) are in the multiple terabyte sizes and bit-rates are in the gigabytes per second range.
4k & 8k movies would be correspondingly much higher.
Far beyond anything Blu-ray can manage.
Which means that those who imagine Blu-ray video is “uncompressed” simply have no clue what they are talking about.
Blu-ray movies are heavily compressed (albeit with modern & efficient codecs) compared to the raw movie, they are just a little less compressed than ‘ordinary’ DVD.
We have uncompressed movie audio tracks (sometimes) but that is as far as the studios will ever go.
Think about it.
If they ever did release completely uncompressed movies it would mean Hollywood (or whoever) was giving away master copies of their movies.
There’s no way that is ever going to happen.
January 9th, 2009
so much jargon just to say “TEH BLOO RAY SUXORZ!!! 360 RULEZ RAWR RAWR!!!”
damn… if only you told Sony before they made a multibillion dollar investment… they couldve been safe from a loss and you couldve been more than just a forum troll…
cheers…

It wasn’t just the HDD.
The CPU, GPU, RAM and HDD in the mk1 XBox were all 3rd party and subject to problems if policy in the 3rd party changed (which is what happened with the GPU).
MS did not own the technology rights to the main components of the original XBox
(this meant they could not do the usual re-engineering with the mk1 XBox – as they have done with the XBox 360 – an expensive lesson learnt there I think).
Basically Nvidia no longer wanted to continue producing the GPU chips and this led to a big row between Microsoft & Nvidia.
Microsoft could not have gone it alone and kept selling the mk1 XBox because Nvidia had stopped making the GPUs for it.
It was not just the simplistic & ridiculous fanboy tale of ‘evil’ Microsoft leaving mk1 XBox owners ‘high and dry’.
If there’s one good thing to come out of that episode it’s 400+ cheap (and often damned good) mk1 XBox games going cheap playable on an XBox 360.

Time for your meds and a long lie down in that darkened room again, I’m afraid.

I’m not one for BC.
Certain games, sure. Something like Street Fighter 2 for example. But, while I don’t like to think of myself as a gfx whore, I guess I get used to trees rustling in the wind, particles floating around etc. So while ocarina of time is a great game, i just can’t get immersed into it as it feels like i’m playing in such a static world
(oot may not have been such a great example, as nintendo have hardly reinvented the zelda franchise. They took a step forward with windwaker, and then jump backwards with the latest.)
Anywhoos, I did break my PS2 out the other day for Yakuza 2, but Sega decided a great ‘feature!’ would be to only include ‘authentic! japanese! audio!’ – totally destroyed the game for me

“It’s like a guy you just beat up, and he’s on the ground, trying to kick back at you and crying at the same time. He doesn’t really make much sense because he can’t talk clearly through the snot and tears.”
CarlB, gotta say I loved that image.

CarlB,
Do you play games online on your 360?

Arvis,
Rarely, if ever. I am more of a single player type of guy.

A 2 Mega Pixel camera takes better pictures then a 7.5 are you sure? So what would you pick between these two cameras. A Sony CyberShot DSC-H10B 8.1MP Digital Camera witch has a Carl Zeiss lens or Canon PowerShot SX110IS 9.0MP Digital Camera/ Both have a 10x Optical Zoom. Blorge I know you do cameras so I wouldn’t mind if you gave advice too.
January 10th, 2009
damn you carl… youre missing probably the best part of a 360…
now man up and play halo 3 and get your ass kicked by a 12 year old who calls you a fag…
January 10th, 2009
darkwhitehair,
Yes, I don’t particularly love shooters or racing either. I have played and won on multiplayer online, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. The capability is there, considering the achievements I have earned without cheating, but it is the insipid children I encountered on GTAIV blocking the bridges during the races that last reaffirmed my belief in single player v/multiplayer (let alone adults acting/talking like children). I find more than enough enjoyment on the 360 in single player form, and the RPG is my favorite genre. The best part of the 360 is the achievement/gamerscore system combined with it’s game library, I find.

If it’s a good Carl Zeiss then I’d go for the camera with the good lens every day of the week.
January 10th, 2009
2nd that Happy.
If the lens isn’t any good, then it doesn’t matter how many mega pixels it as.
January 10th, 2009
carl… did you like Lost Odyssey?? so far Ive heard either people loving it for the cheesy classic story and gameplay… (like the old JRPGs) or hating it for the cheesy story and gameplay…
and what about infinite undiscovery??
January 10th, 2009
I started playing it just before I left, but from the little time I had with it, I liked it. I didn’t get a chance to play Infinite Undiscovery, and I doubt I will as I will have my hands busy with this years RPG’s when I get back.
January 10th, 2009
I finished Lost Odyssey twice. I thought it was great, although I wanted to punch Cooke in the nose as she was really annoying.
January 10th, 2009
thats great harry?? Ive heard that if you install the disks… you only need to play with one disk and dont have to change them… is that true??
January 11th, 2009
Fucked if i know, I traded it in after finishing it twice.
