Batman Arkham Asylum save Eidos from Tomb Raider woes?
It appears that the latest iteration in the Tomb Raider series is actually hurting the company due to poor sales performance. With the poor sales performance of the game, the company is taking a cautious stance for 2009. However, will Batman: Arkham Asylum be able to turn the tide for Eidos?
Eidos blamed the state of the economy along with a crowded Christmas market as the root cause for the poor performance of Tomb Raider. The game did get decent reviews from most critics; however it was pushed aside by many of the other titles during the crowded holiday season.
The company lowered its fiscal forecast for the year, resulting in shares falling 25 percent. Eidos blamed the state of the economy in the US for the poor performance of the game as it sold decently in Europe. Eidos’s next big release is Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is a new gritty title that takes place in the Batman universe. This new title will be a third person view title taking place completely within Arkham Asylum, which is said to be a huge facility for the mentally insane within the Batman universe.

Some have even paralleled the game to Bioshock, with its theme of a self contained world where the insane has run amok. A game like this has never been done before, where a comic book hero is used as a basis for a third person view game within a confined area.
Just from looking at the graphics and theme for the game, I would have to say that this game could be potential hit for 2009. It is still too early to say with very little revealed about the game besides a teaser trailer. However, given the gritty and gruesome nature of Rocksteady’s past title, this game looks to deliver on those fronts for a mature audience.

Thank god, i miss the tomb raiders where you had to fight bats, tigers and ravens. Tomb raider 1 and 2 were the best, ever since then, it all went down hill.

Tomb Raider Underworld is a great game. Especially if you like the first one.

I liked Tomb Raider Legends… it just pisses me off that they count on people to buy the game for her big boobs than good gameplay and good story…
if you fuck up Eidos… and give Batman big boobs… I will fucking kill you…

Surely I can’t be the only person who noticed Mike Ferro has spelt Eidos wrong everytime, including in the page title?
Agree with Bourne, 1 and 2 were awesome. Though I did like The Last Revelation (IV) a lot, for puzzles and such.

Btw I didn’t mean to sound arrogant regarding the spellings, it sounded more casual in my head. Just thought it would be worth telling Mike.

or maybe… theres a new studio in the 4th Dimension called Edios who makes decent Tomb Raider games…
I never played the old Tomb Raider games… I couldnt handle the controls… I feel so left out…

I could even stand the crappy graphics.

I didn’t notice the spelling at first, but now that you mention it….
Underworld was pretty good. It is very similar to the last few, but the graphics are better and the levels are a lot larger. I think the series could use some help though. Maybe better writing and a stronger story would help do the franchise some good.
I think Arkham Asylum looks like it might be pretty good. As long as it gets decent reviews, I’m in.

it makes sense since many people have said that the full game is awfully short… Im not gonna buy it till I can get it for like $20 (just like the deal I got for Heavenly Sword) hehe…
I feel bad about picking on lara… once upon a time she was good… till she went all diva and got breast enlargements… hehe you can never run out of lara croft boob jokes…

@DWH.
Yeah…I’ve been saying that for a while. MS paid Eidos to purposely gimp the ps3 version.
Some people on this blog actually consider this “good business practices”

From what I understand, the PS3 version ended up selling better. It serves Eidos right for jumping into bed with the likes of M$… I hope Eidos used protection.

“I hope Eidos used protection.”
The Red Ring jokes that could come from that.

What kills me is that companies release the title in the heavy christmas release and then blam it on the Christmas Release and the Economy when everyone is saying that the Video Game business is recession proof. Yes there were numerious titles released even more then I can afford so why would you be so foolish and release it around Gears of War 2, Prince of Persia, Banjo Kazooie, COD WAW, Fabel 2, Left 4 Dead, Lips, Mirrors Edge, End War, Fallout 3, Rock Band 2, Guitar Heros, Dead Space, Midnight Club, Street Fighter, Last Remnent and what everelse is out there and then complain about poor sales. Eidos was just foolish to release it at that time. Well it will make Money over 2009 but don’t cry over spilt milk that you purposely poured on the ground. LBP developers did the same thing.

Only on the power of Blu-Ray! So how is it?
I would have ripped it also, but I’m a huge fan of the series so it’s worth it.
January 12th, 2009
Oh yeah and it was also half off…
January 12th, 2009
Im not a fan of the series.. dont care about the Tank like controls of RE… I find Dead Space and Left 4 dead is evolving the horror genre more than Silent hill or RE…
yeah it is true that end of the year rush is just too much for people… Im interested in like 3 quarters of the game that CAD listed… would have probably bought them… but would rather rent them… and then buy em like 6 months later when they are all on sale…
January 12th, 2009
RE 4 didn’t have tank like controls and people cried over it. I still think RE4 is one of my favorite games of all time. That game invented the over the shoulder shooting mechanic, which we see everywhere now (MGS4, GOW, Uncharted, etc, etc) Part 5 looks like it’s going to be amazing.
Yeah that’s a good point…. If they release over 100 games over the course of three months, it makes the chance of having a game sell well very slim. Plus at $65 a game, who could play them all?
Also has anyone played Last Remnant? I’ve read about the battle system… and I don’t think I would like it… controlling groups of characters and not having a solid set of commands (like heal).
January 12th, 2009
I didn’t like The last remnant, combat was iffy.
And resi 4 was best on wii and you all know it
January 13th, 2009
I’ve played it on GameCube and then on the PS2. I’ll have to pick up the Wii version the next time I see it. It would be a nice change of pace from Chocobo Dungeon.

I can’t wait to try this game.
