Relax, Killzone 2 review embargo lifts in February
With a great deal of hype following Killzone 2, it may just be the most anticipated game to hit 2009. Many of the sites in Europe have started to receive their review codes already and the initial impressions are good. However, don’t get your hopes up on seeing a review of the game this month as there is an embargo on it.
Killzone 2 is shaping up to be a heavy hitter contender with the game dominating the show floor at CES. I have not seen such hype for a game in a long time. Shall I dare say since Halo 3? The buzz at CES has revitalized my enthusiasm for the title on top of coming off the phase 2 beta of the game.
I am very excited to say that Sony has started to send out the review codes for the game. The reviewers who have the review code in their hands are already suffering from itchy fingers, wanting to blurt out their impressions of the game. I have already seen a few writers jumping on the forums breaking their silence by hyping how great the game is.
The embargo on the review for Killzone 2 lifts early February. Of course, the OPM was the exception, with their review score technically in the February issue. However, since they are a print edition the dates have been relaxed a bit for them. However, for everyone else, the reviews won’t be coming out till February. Until then you won’t be seeing any legitimate reviews of the game.
If you do, then you can be assured they are just giving their impressions based off gameplay time of pre-review code. Readers should relax and play the F.E.A.R 2 demo coming out on the 15th exclusively for Qore subscribers. The demo will also come out at the end of the month for regular PSN and Xbox Live folks.

Ok, so I called the GameStop near where I work, and they had the betas. I decided to stop off at the GameStop near my apartment instead… sure enough the toad behind the counter looked at me like a deer in headlights when I asked him about it… I think he was new, and the only one working the store (which had a bunch of people there). So I didn’t get it last night… I’m going to the one that has them on me lunch today. Hopefully I’ll be playing it tonight!

Why is there an embargo?
That usually means that it’s rubbish and they don’t want reviews getting out to tell people that it’s rubbish.

lock down… all games have embargoes… MGS 4 had a huge embargo for which the reviewers couldnt talk about the cut scenes…

thats just stupid kev… theres a difference between screaming from the rooftops (which is ADVERTISING) and embargoes… which blocks reviewers from publishing the review till the day they launch the game…
they already have given people betas and a 6 level Preview… just because the review isnt out before the game is doesnt mean the game is bad…
it sounds like many people have got their review copies… it only smells bad when publishers dont give the reviewers a review copy till AFTER the game has been published…

Why blow the review ‘load’ months before the game gets released? 1-2 months in gaming is a looooong time imo. Why not hold them back so you’re reading about this game called ‘Killzone’ when it’s actually out/within weeks of being released.
Anywhoos, the only leaked release i’ve heard of gave it 4/5. I think it was some swedish website or something, they pulled it tho…

If you don’t get sucked in to buying straight away (always a highly risky strategy) then the truth is that it’ll be months before anyone really knows whether this game is any good or not.
Sorry to pi$$ on anyone’s chips but that’s the truth of the matter.
First will come the gushing ‘reviews’
(which are invariably actually far closer to plain advertsing than any serious impartial review….well, the mags and outlets do have to watch out for their advertising revenues)
just about every ‘big’ heavily trailed game gets when it’s first released.
Then you have to wait for a while until the hype dies down and you might start to hear a little more objective criticism.
I hope you’re all right to be so excited about this one, it’s been a long time since a genuinely ground-breaking game came along.
Unfortunately I suspect this is just the PS3′s next generic FPS pretty much like all the other FPSs.
Neither Kill Zone 1 nor Killzone Liberation were exactly sunners, were they?

I think I understand your point about FPS’s. Most FPS’s all basically have the same game mechanics. Still there are good FPS’s and there are bad FPS’s. From what I’ve seen of KZ2, it looks very promising. If FPS’s are not your type of game, than it probably won’t be for you. I like playing all genres of games myself.

You should read up on some of the buzz surrounding Killzone 2. I’ll tell you straight up that I won’t be buying it (don’t care for shooters) but you’d have to be crazy to think that this will be even close to “mediocre.” Pretty much every publication that has the full version of the game is crapping themselves with glee. Any dissent is very very minimal.

Happy, you’re right, it could well be generic.
But look at the feedback people have had to say about the beta. It’s been hugely positive. Read first impressions on sites like eurogamer, joystiq etc. They’re positive as well.
There’s no smoke without fire. People are buzzing about this title, probably for good reason.
There was never any real substantial buzz about the first Killzone. And we know why.

i just don’t see the “buzz” in the retailers, online, or anywhere else that’s supposed to be around.
even so, many “buzzed” about the first killzone, so much so that ign labeled it a “halo killer”…. and well know how that turned out. it wasn’t even in the same league with halo and the scores reflected it. not even “A” status.
we’ll see, but i wouldn’t believe the hype until there’s something proven to be hyped about. graphics isn’t enough.

you can only advance a genre so far… R2 has a unique co-op mode and people label it as a World of warcraft wannabe… if you put in cinematic cut scenes people bitch about the game being a movie more than being a game…

Barnabe, I thought the first Killzone was great too, good enough to play through it again before I get Killzone 2.

I think you’re being a tad unfair to Guerrilla.
Its not a very good comparision, but take Gearbox, all they ever did was port games (over 5 ports/addons for the half life engine alone) and then they created Halo…

The reason for doing so is the E3 trailer you mention.
You cannot show a video like what was shown at E3, and then have the final game play nothing like it; Guerrilla would be a laughing stock…although it’s clear they already are in your world kev.
That trailer set the bar for Guerrilla. And from the impressions of beta testers, it sounds like they matched it.
I’ve said the first KZ wasn’t great. I’ve never played their other games so I can’t comment. But as I’ve said, there is no smoke without fire.
Beta testers and previews on IGN, Eurogamer, Joystiq et al all point to the fact that Guerrilla has developed a great game.
Although, er, I think I’ll wait for reviews to confirm it before I part with my cash…

There have been a couple of reviews I think that broke the embargo and got pulled (i said before i’ve seen a 4 out of 5), and then there is are the impressions from the demo’s that’ve gone out.
Still, I say wait until you play it before you judge it!
I don’t think many of the ps3 owners here think the ps3 is pure gold, most of them accept its few flaws. The authors of the site maybe… If Ivan were still around, I bet he got his ps3 gold plated a.k.a gangsta bling.

If you check other sites, you will find that this opinion was exclusive to IGN, and not an opinion shared by others.
A Eurogamer preview said it “lazily trivialises what it has to offer.”
With Killzone 2, the feedback is positive across a plethora of sites.
Guerrilla did not lie, Phil Harrison said it was running video; Hermen Hulst said it was video.

lockdown – in a post viewing interview, guerrilla stated the video was “ingame”. meaning the final engine was going to look identical to what was shown at E3. I believe it was NextGen that asked the question.
anyway, this prompted fanboys the world over to claim the ps3 was “most powerful” because the 360 had not produced any gameplay that matched guerrilla’s video…the problem is; guerrilla hasn’t produced any either.
the entire spectacle has turned into a series of smoke and mirrors, lies, and ambiquity from Guerilla. is it suprising a sony backed developer would be so shady? i think not.

barn – don’t assume anything. an incomplete build can be one or two levels that have been optimized for release.
unless the game is only that long, there stands good reason to suspect something else can go wrong with the remainder of the game.

Ivan must be getting smarter… is that saying much? I wonder if they will ever do stats on how many PS3 owners buy a 360 compared to how many 360 owners buy a PS3…

There is nothing wrong with people getting excited about a game before it’s release. I have no idea how good or bad K2 will be. I am excited to see it for myself though. I don’t think it will come anywhere near Halo. It seems 99% of 360 owners own that game. If it is as good as some people think it will be, is that all bad. It would force the 360 to push the envelope and isn’t that what we want as gamers?

Maybe they could just use the live and PSN accounts. See how many each were activated first on one console, then on the other later. Might be a violation of privacy or something though, this and the fact that it would take cooperation from both companies. One may be willing to do it… but probably not the other.
We could do one on the commenters and author’s here though (all ten of us). I own a 360 but not a PS3. Does anybody own both? If so, which one did you get first?

Wii -> PS3 -> 360
Usage is currently low on all machines due to the time of year but breaks down to PS3 (crash commando) then 360 (nothing since fable etc), then wii (not played in months).

I think you are talking about the same usage they referenced a couple of weeks ago, but somehow the numbers got turned around. I could be mistaken, but I believe Castle Crashers, Halo 3, and Gears of War 2 are each currently getting more usage than Crash Commando.

I threw in usage for the heck of it. Usage generally moves from one machine to the other depending which games are out etc. At the moment I just have nothing to play except crash commando, giving V. Chronicles a break

So this means you bought the Wii first, then PS3, and then 360? How long did you spend with the Wii and PS3 before moving on to the 360? Or did you buy them all at once?

Erm, I’m not actually sure. It was jsut a few months between each machine. Don’t remember how many. Probably had the Wii the longest before purchasing the PS3 (those were good days for the wii, lots of good titles came out ssbm, zelda etc etc.).
