December NPD – Wii top, Xbox second, PS3 last – no change then

January 16, 2009

December NPD - Wii top, Xbox second, PS3 last - no change thenThe NPD Group has finally released its sales figures for the end of 2008 and they show that the games industry is still in a very healthy state. Despite the recession, sales were up and the individual consoles are saw rises over the holiday period. Unsurprisingly, the Wii finished top of the home consoles, only being beaten by th Nintendo DS overall. The Xbox 360 stayed in second (always the bridesmaid), and the PS3 finished dead last yet again.

The December sales figures for the U.S. show how much the Wii is still dominating proceedings. 2008 has seen the Nintendo console clean up on a monthly basis, and the most important month of the year didn’t buck that trend. But the bigger picture tells a better story, with all consoles on the up, and the industry looking good in the face of a weakening economy.

December Sales Figures (U.S.)

Nintendo DS – 3.04 million units
Wii – 2.15 million units
Xbox 360 – 1.44 million units
PlayStation Portable – 1.02 million units
PlayStation 3 – 726,000 units
Playstation 2 – 410,000 units

Nintendo cleaned up yet again. The DS managed to sell an astounding three million units in the space of five weeks. And the Wii managed over two million for the second month in a row. On the home console front, Wii sales again matched sales of both the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined.

Nintendo

What a year Nintendo has had, and December continued the sales trend that has shone all year. The DS looks unstoppable, with everyone and their grandma seeming to own one, be buying one, or have it on their ‘to buy’ list. This is the first time a console has sold in excess of three million consoles in one month, beating the previous record set by the PS2 when it sold 2.7 million units in 2002. And the Wii once again dominated the home console front, with that 2.15 million units sold in America meaning a lot of kids had a fantastic Christmas day (and a crappy new year).

Microsoft

1.44 million units of the Xbox 360 is a fantastic result for Microsoft, putting it in a definite second place in the home console stakes. The price drop earlier in the year combined with Sony’s insistence on not dropping the price of the PS3 before Christmas meant a lot of people opted to buy a Microsoft console over the Sony rival. If it wasn’t for Nintendo’s absolute victory in this generation, Microsoft would be storming it.

Sony

Sony may have three consoles currently on the market but there’s no bragging rights with that when they take the bottom three positions on a monthly basis. The PSP did OK with over a million units sold, although that’s only a third of the total of DS’s bought in the same time frame. I regard the 700,000 or so Playstation 3’s sold as a bad result, especially when the Xbox 360 doubled that figure. The PS2 meanwhile is still hanging on in there despite being almost ten years old and fit for the retirement home.

NPD also revealed its figures for the whole of 2008, which I’ll take an in-depth look at tomorrow.

  1. DaBot:

So Nintendo sold 5.1 million units, Microsoft sold 1.4 million units and Sony sold 2.1 million units…..in December….in the U.S alone.

Now don’t quote me on this, this is just a rough calculation I just did using U.S prices and units sold. I used the 360’s $299 model and not the Pro or the Arcade, so I don’t know how much difference there really would be.

    Nintendo made (roughly) 554,000,000

    MS made (roughly) 418,600,000

    Sony made (roughly) 572,000,000

So there you go, someone can do it better than me and get closer to the real cash figures from December in the U.S alone, not bad for Sony eh?

  2. kev:

i hope the makers pay attention next gen. PRICE MATTERS!!!!

  3. Barnabe Jones:

I bought a DS, so I helped contribute to those astonishing sales figures. The PSP managed to do pretty well actually, considering the 360 sold only a few more units.

I think the PS2 will be in the running as long as the Wii is around. I still don’t understand how the frugal gamer would decide to buy a Wii over a PS2.

PS2 – $130 – greatest game library of all time
    Wii – $250 – about 5 good games total.

  4. ncaissie:

I got my PS3 last weekend. I think Sony needs to drop the price and kill the PS2. That is what brought the 360 sales up.

If MS didn’t drop the price I think it would still be close between the PS3 and 360.

  5. Happyhockum:

Another poor year for the PS3.

The problem Sony now have is that any move on price they make Microsoft will match, or exceed.

Especially with Microsoft having sold so many 360 units this year and at a time when the 360 is making them money.

I just don’t see how PS3 ever gets really profitable for Sony.
Everytime they come close to making their production costs back they are expected to go back into the red with a price-cut.
Everytime they price-cut Microsoft cut too, forcing the expectation back on Sony & stalling their sales.

Time’s running out and I suspect it’s just never going to happen for the PS3.

If XBox 360 is always the ‘bridesmaid’ then PS3 is simply nowhere near the ceremony and lost it’s invitation.

The net effect of the 360 price-cuts, the coming more casual games for it and the advertising exploiting this will make interesting reading in the coming months.
Can 360 close in on the Wii some more?

  6. Wylie77:

    Happy,
The PS2 was the bride. Also, how is the 360 closing in on the Wii? The Wii was released a year later and still has a huge lead. The 360 can get all the casual games it wants and it won’t help at this stage. The Wii is the so called “in thing” right now. People want it because everyone else has one and they are hard to find in stores. It’s the tickle me elmo effect. Also, the Wii sells do to its controllers. Apparently people like flailing their arms around while playing a video game. I guess what I am saying is the 360 is not, won’t, and never was closing in on the Wii. But who cares, just enjoy your system, or are numbers more fun to you?

  7. harry sachz:

lol @ DaBot and his ‘Sony Family’ calculations. Bitch please!

  8. lock_down:

It’s not too bad for the PS3 given the price. And the games are *finally* going to be coming out this year.

What about the PSP though? 1 million? That system has less games than the PS3.

I am going to enjoy my PS3 with KZ2 next month.

*cue kev and his bashing of KZ2*

  9. Barnabe Jones:

Happy – I still stand by your hero Mr Greenburgs counts…

360 now has an 8 million unit lead on the PS3 worldwide, with 28 million 360s and 20 million PS3s.

    360 – 3 years – 9.33 for each year
    PS3 – 2 Years – 10 for each year

  10. kev:

lockdown – you’re so insecure, little guy. i never bashed kz2, only those silly enough to hype it w/o playing it. ie; you.

  11. lock_down:

    Right on cue.

  12. CarlB:

    Wylie77,

The PS2 is a senior citizen waiting for death. She did have a great run though, and I will still love playing on it (I don’t have a choice considering PS3 bc). If the 360 “is not, won’t, and never was closing in on the Wii” then that leaves PS3 in an even worse position. People don’t so much like the “flailing arms around” as the family friendly vibe they get from Nintendo as compared to PS3 and 360. Let alone it’s “presidential family” seal of approval. The majority of kids and parents don’t know ratchet and clank like they do Mario and Pokemon. It’s funny how people are ready to mention the Sony Playstation 2 “greatest game library of all time” yet easily forget the 3-4 gaming generations of multiple console releases available the Wii.

I could care less about the kids and family games on it, but I am not in the purchasing decision majority. I doubt anyone here is. Kids and families are.

Speaking of these casual games that everybody loves to hate here, guess what the number one money making one is: Guitar Hero Legends of Rock, the first game to make over $1,000,000,000. I like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, both of which are considered to be casual games. The 360 also happens to be selling more units of GHLoR than Wii, so I guess the Wii isn’t so tough to beat after all.

  13. ncaissie:

The PS3 is not out yet. I hope. And If Sony drops the price of the PS3 it wont matter if MS follows. Because They are buying 360s because the PS3 is to expensive at the moment NOT because the 360 is cheaper.
As the PS3 drops in price people that can afford it will buy it.
    Understand Happy?

I hesitated because I wasn’t sure it was going to do well but suing it sells better for its age then the 360 I have no doubt it will beat the 360 when it gets cheaper.
360 is just plain garbage and every single person I know that has one has had to buy a new one or send it for repair.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

True those are impressive sales numbers… but the game also costs a lot more due to the dorky guitar controller.

  15. Happyhockum:

    ncaissie:
“They are buying 360s because the PS3 is to expensive at the moment NOT because the 360 is cheaper.”

    Potayto, pataato.

The situation will still be the same if PS3 gets a price-cut and it’s matched or bettered by XBox.

The fact is that they both offer a similar gaming experience
(with XBox having the better on-line gaming and a bigger catalogue).

So what would be so different?

Either way I seriously doubt a $100 cut is coming for the PS3 (that would push unit losses way back up).
So it seems fair to say that a more marginal price chop is unlikely to do too much for PS3 sales.

I know the PS3 support don’t want to believe this stuff but it’s the truth.

The really interesting bit is how low the 360 is going to get by the end of this year.
Undoubtedly it will come even further down before the year is out.

  16. lock_down:

“The situation will still be the same if PS3 gets a price-cut and it’s matched or bettered by XBox.”

So what? Doesn’t stop the Wii from selling does it?

The Wii is more expensive in the UK than the popular 360 package, yet still outsells the 360 (so yes, it outsells the PS3 as well by default.)

But on that basis, there is no reason to suggest that a PS3 price cut will have no effect, even if it is matched by the 360.

It is also worth remembering that the defining game for the PS3 isn’t out yet.

In the same way Halo is a defining game for Xbox, Gran Turismo is a defining game for PlayStation.

Halo 3 has been and gone.

Gran Turismo 5 has yet to come.

  17. CarlB:

    ncaissie,

I agree the PS3 is not out yet. I would buy your argument if the Wii didn’t sell so much more when it was originally the cheapest console before the 360 Arcade version even came out. The 360 did have a hardware problem and it was huge fiasco, but now that they have solved the problem with Jasper and they have stood by the early adopters, sales should only improve. Sales can improve for both the PS3 and 360, but one will always be behind the other at any given point, even if they both are doing relatively well (or poorly in comparison to Wii sales).

  18. Wylie77:

    CarlB,
I never said that the PS3 was in a better position than the 360. My post was questioning where Happy was coming from with this crap about the 360 closing in on the Wii. And like I said make all the casual games you want for the 360, it really won’t matter much. Casuals see the Wii as a casual console and the 360 as hardcore. That is their perception and that is not easy to change. And what the hell are you talking about with Guitar Hero? The 360 moved more units of a game so it beat the Wii? We weren’t talking about game sales here, it was on consoles. But you go ahead and spin your GH numbers if it makes you feel better.

  19. CarlB:

    lock_down,

I thought MGS4 was the defining game for the PS3?

  20. darkwhitehair:

WOW!!! Who would have thought… that PRICE matters… WOW!!! that is revolutionary and groundbreaking… you should patent that idea kev…

funny thing is kev… we werent hyping it without playing it… I specifically said that the people who were in the beta and the previewers who had a 5 level preview copy of the game had good things to say about it… if they didnt say anything good about it… we wouldnt be excited to play it…

and you “conveniently” forgot all about that…

good year for all the consoles… as long as they come out with good games… Im happy…

back to WaW… does anyone have any tips for me?? I can hardly get the the carpet bombing perk thing… I can never get to the dog releasing part…

  21. CarlB:

    Wylie77,

Never said you said you did, just asking a question and answering a few of the points you made. I do think selling the most units of the most grossing game in history matters a little to Microsoft, especially as they continue to make the most money off of it for DLC on Live, but I could be wrong. Families see the Wii as a family console and the 360/PS3 not having as much potential for their children or the family. That is their perception and I agree it isn’t easy to change. I was only using Guitar Hero as a single example that multiplatform (Wii, 360, PS3) software sales (what usually tends to matter to a console manufacturer for long term profit) do not necessarily have to be the the bestselling consoles’ territory by default. I am sorry if I offended you by mentioning it.

  22. lock_down:

Metal Gear does not have 50 million in sales unlike the GT franchise.

  23. lock_down:

And given how MGS4 has sold 4 million for a fully fledged game, and GT5: Prologue has sold 2.3 million for a glorified demo; it puts things into more perspective.

    GT5 will be huge.

  24. CarlB:

    lock_down,

I see. So you are basing it off of sales history. Granted, MGS4 does come bundled now, but how many in the GT franchise came in the box with the PS1 and 2 as opposed to the old MGS’s? WiiFit and Sports come bundled with the Wii, but owners are divided between Zelda, Mario, or Smash Bros to be it’s “defining” game. How many of those old MGS’s were exclusive to PS1 or 2? Will it make a difference that Sony will have millions more PS3 users by the time GT5 comes out?

  25. Arvis:

“The 360 did have a hardware problem and it was huge fiasco, but now that they have solved the problem with Jasper…”

I remember people saying that the Valhalla chipset had eliminated the RRoD. And when that turned out to be a huge lie, they all said the Falcon chipset had solved the problem. Another lie. Where is Kev and his righteous anger over lying? Why isn’t Kev mad at CarlB for swallowing up these Microsoft lies over and over?

    -Arvis

  26. CarlB:

    lock_down,

GT5 sales do put it into more perspective in that they are indicative of there being more MGS fans than GT fans. Suffice it to say that GT5 will be defining title of the PS3 for you and many other fans, whereas MGS4 is the defining title for others, and God of War III will be the defining title for yet others.

  27. ncaissie:

It’s not Potayto, pataato. it’s Potayto, Orange.
They will buy the PS3 because its BETTER THAN THE 360.
Nothing to do with which one is cheaper.

  28. CarlB:

    Arvis,

I remember people saying 2006 (and 2007, and 2008) would be the “year of the PS3″, achievements and gamerscore were not necessary or wanted, PS3 would have all 1080p games, PS3 would have the best and largest library of games, blow away the competition with it’s graphical superiority, be bc with PS2, Blu-Ray would redefine gaming, etc.

The point is I got over my 2 week RRoD “horror” out of 3 years of good gaming with my console repaired and returned w/comp live all free of charge, and I’m sure you got over the above aforementioned “discrepancies” as well (or maybe not).

  29. Arvis:

    CarlB,

You’d make a good politician. When you can’t defend yourself, you attack your opponent.

As for me, there was never anything to “get over.” I’ve been just playing next-gen games I enjoy since early 2007. That includes Halo 3 (which turned out to be crap) and Mass Effect (which is still one of the best current gen games anywhere), by the way.

    -Arvis

  30. lock_down:

“…being more MGS fans than GT fans.”

Yes, but if you are citing GT5P sales to MGS4 sales then the difference is ten-fold; one is a fully fledged game; the other is a demo.

The main point is that the GT franchise is the highest selling PlayStation exclusive title; having around 25 million more sales than the MGS franchise. And GT games have (obviously) only appeared on PS consoles. MGS has had games on other systems.

    From SCEI (May 2008):

    Gran Turismo (PS1) – 10.85 million
    Gran Turismo 2 (PS1) – 9.37 million
    Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (PS2) – 14.89 million
    Gran Turismo Concept 2001 Tokyo (PS2) – 1.56 million
    Gran Turismo 4 Prologue (PS2) – 1.36 million Gran Turismo 4 (PS2) – 10.06 million
    Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3) – 2.23 million

    Total: 50.32 million

I know GT3 had a bundle (which may explain why it has the most sales) but I’m pretty sure that GT4 wasn’t bundled, so 10 million stand alone sales is pretty respectable.

I can’t find anything about the first two being bundles, though there is every chance they could have been.

Given how that GT5P is getting damage modelling, and if that translates fully to GT5 and all cars get damage then I would expect sales to exceed the sales set by GT3 as damage is most requested feature.

“Suffice it to say that GT5 will be defining title of the PS3 for you and many other fans, whereas MGS4 is the defining title for others, and God of War III will be the defining title for yet others”

    Exactly: “many other fans.”

MGS (25 million circa sold) and God of War (less than 2 million I would expect) have no way near the fanbase of GT.

And that is where the sales of GT5P and MGS4 come into more perspective when you consider the scope of game you are receiving.

  31. darkwhitehair:

way to go carl… instead of explaining yourself… you make an argument that kev has already bled to the bone…

and I thought we were fwends…

Gametrailers already said 2008 was the year of the PS3 (software wise)… now youre making me bring up old arguments as well… I hope youre happy…

also… when was the year of the 360??? so far sales wise… it has been the year of the Wii all the time…

  32. lock_down:

Sorry, clicked “submit comment” by mistake.

What I meant to add also was that many, if not all consumers are aware of the difference between GT5P and MGS4.

Many people who buy GT5P know it is a demo and know it is small in scope (though 60+ cars isn’t exactly being mean.) Yet they know MGS4 is probably one of the most complete and exhaustive games ever created.

Given how GT4P sold 1.3 million, and GT5P is over 2.3 and still selling, to me it spells the huge potential that GT5 (especially if damage is included) has.

Furthermore, given how there are more copies of GT games sold than current PS3 owners only reinforces this potential of a PS3 hardware sales spike when GT5 is released.

  33. CarlB:

    Arvis,

Actually, when I can’t defend myself I admit the other person is right. Politicians usually sidestep or don’t answer point in question at all. That point has been mentioned by so many 360 haters here and acknowledged by me so many times that I’ve lost count, but I guess you haven’t, so good on you. As for me, I haven’t played Halo 3 (and don’t particularly care to) and I loved Mass Effect to the point where I got all of it’s achievements and am looking forward to Mass Effect 2.

    lock_down,

Yes, we still don’t know what the actual difference is until GT5 comes out, do we?

The main point is we are talking about single games, not franchises, correct? And any speculation before a title comes out is just that. You are obviously a huge Gran Turismo fan, so I will respect that and leave you to your convictions on what will be the “defining title” on the PS3 in the future.

    darkwhitehair,

aw, u not my fwend any more? I’m so hurt. But seriously, when and for what was I called to explain myself? I have admitted that point many times… so what more do you want? I apoligize if I hurt your feelings by forgetting that 2008 was “the year of the PS3″ according to GameTrailers. And did I ever claim there was a “year of the 360″? I think not.

  34. darkwhitehair:

carl… Ive heard that Mass Effect had those some awful elevator loading times?? how true were they?? and was the conversations with NPCs “lively” like they said in the previews?? damn… Id like to play Mass Effect… I hope it comes to the PS3…

  35. lock_down:

We are talking about single games, but the cumulative sales of GT (bundled or not) point to the fact that the single GT5 release will be a big title for the PS3, and will (in my belief) significantly increase PS3 sales.

Although as you say, at the moment it is all just speculation.

  36. lock_down:

    Mass Effect is amazing.

  37. CarlB:

yeah, a few of the elevators did suck royally (interesting thought). Not sure what you mean by “lively”, but some did have quite a bit of attitude, though I didn’t particularly care for the tonality on others. The females were downright annoying until they got busy (just like in real life!).

  38. darkwhitehair:

    AHHAHAHAHA nice description…

I was sad that even after installing Mass Effect into your 360… the elevator stuff didnt shorten… because they were like built into the game or something…

by lively I meant like… they talked about how you can interrupt them in the middle of their conversation… and some would like it.. while others see that interruption as rude…

I like how western RPGs have evolved over the years… while JRPGs still have the same… young boy with spiky hair turned into unwilling saviour of the world… it pisses me off… I was a young boy… I didnt get a chance to save the world *angwy face*

  39. kev:

dwh – tell it to your gods at sony who SWORE price “doesn’t matter”. wasn’t it you swearing the ps3 was the better “value”? judging from the extremely poor sales, i’d say you were and sony were just owned. (sorry, but you brought me into this…. )

lockdown – gt has NEVER been a ‘defining” title for the ps franchise. sims are a niche market. yes, the gt franchise sold “50 million”, but how many iterations did it take to do that? a LOT. not to mention most of the gt sales were done with no competition on the market.

not only is forza competition, it’s exceeded the gt franchise in every way barring needlessly redundant cars (40+ Nissan Skylines in GT4).

first it was RFOM, then it was MGS3, LBP, HOME, etc… all was supposed to be defining moments for the ps3. none were. and none moved any consoles to any significant numbers.

  40. kev:

oops..meant to type MGS4.. not 3…but you get the point…

  41. darkwhitehair:

boy… kev is really desperate… should I explain how he is wrong or… meh… Ill do it anyways…

kev… I still say it has the best value… yeah… just because it sold half as much as the 360 doesnt mean it isnt a better overall package… just because you disagree with me… doesnt mean youre right… have fun downloading new DLC and buying XBLA games on the Arcade SKU….

Id call consumers stupid… yeah stupid… because they dont buy quality games like Psychonauts and Chronicles of Riddick… just like they compare LIVE with PSN… and an Arcade with a PS3…

unlike the xbox… the playstation doesnt have one HUGE mascot for which it is known for… its a collection of games… I can easilly say that Wii is known for Mario… and xbox is known for Halo… and Playstation is known for what??? sack boy?? kratos?? solid snake??? no… because they arent as mainstream as their competitors

also… Im not black and we’re not in texas… I cant be “owned”

  42. Arvis:

    Kev,

You really hit rock bottom with that post. You can stare GT3’s “14 million copies sold” right in the face and claim “niche market.”

Not to mention that MGS4 is largely credited for the PS3 outselling the 360 month-on-month for the first half of 2008 calendar. Seems like a “defining moment” to me… but I suppose it’s up for debate.

By the way, I looked up “delusional” in the dictionary and it just said “see: ‘kev’”

    CarlB,

I made a valid point about your faith that Microsoft is being honest about Jasper solving the RRoD problem, and you responded by ranting about past PS3 “problems” and ignoring everything I said. Sorry if I somehow misconstrued that into something it wasn’t, but it still looks to me like you attacked from a lack of defense.

    -Arvis

  43. kev:

dwh – it’s not just me who disagrees with you, it’s 140 million ps2 owners who are ignoring the ps3. apparently they don’t see the value either.

call them stupid if you want, but i think they’re smart. stupid would be paying for things you won’t use like most of the features in the ps3.

    buh bye..

  44. CarlB:

I don’t remember the interruption thing… but it was a while back and a lot has happened since.
I bet you didn’t even have spiky hair… you just vivisected young animals and tortured them while singing lullabies and hymns at the same time *grinning face* (why I add face here I don’t know… what else would grin? My ass if “assed you a question”?)(grinsnickergrin)

  45. darkwhitehair:

kev… I use every single features on the PS3… its made up for most of its price just from MGS 4… sigh.. I still havent finished that…

yeah Id call all of them stupid… because Ico and Shadow of the Collosus didnt sell 100 million copies like it should…

carl are you drunk??? I think I like drunk carl… even drunk carl makes more sense than kev…

    *badum tish*

  46. lock_down:

    “Sims are a niche market”

So how come The Sims has sold over 100 million copies?

Oh yeah, that’s different isn’t it.

  47. darkwhitehair:

    hahahahahahahh lock down…

    ahhahahahahahaha

    also…

    Badum TISH!!!

  48. lock_down:

“A leaked survey claims “…Due to the number of cars and tracks included in the Forza 3 game, it will be sold as a 2-disc set.””

Christ, are you still using DVD’s and disc swapping over there in Xbox land for racing sims?

We stopped doing that after Gran Turismo 2.

  49. darkwhitehair:

lock down we already knew it was a 2 disk game… that news is like 6 months old…

    still funny as hell though…

but… I think… if you install the second disk on your 360… you would be able to play it with just one disk…

also… I was pleasantly surprised to see that WaW required no installs… YAY!!!

  50. lock_down:

Yeah I know it’s old DWH, it’s just funny though :D

Don’t you have to put the disc in though if you install a game on the 360 to make sure it’s legit?

  51. lock_down:

KZ2 doesn’t need installs either does it?

  52. harry sachz:

I find it ironic that the PS3 boys are trying to badmouth Forza, when all they currently have is what can only be described as a Gran Turismo demo which Sony had the audacity to charge people for.

All this talk about Forza has inspired me to go back and play it from scratch.

  53. darkwhitehair:

no lock down.. its doesnt… which makes me a very happy panda…

wait who is trying to bad mouth Forza??? WHO!!! WHO HAS TO AUDACITY TO bAD MOUTH A GAME!!!

but it is a shame that Forza isnt played as much as the shooters on LIVE… did Forza 2 have any DLC or anything??

in that same note… Burnout Paradise Box set… they are rereleasing it with all the DLC and some new mode for 360 and pS3…

    I lub you Criterion…

  54. CarlB:

    Arvis,

Read what I put with the PS3 rant, and you will see I did not ignore what you said, admitted the problem and explained my own experience. Apology accepted.

    darkwhitehair,

I forgot to put your name in front of the response, and you and several others posted again before I could respond to your “*angwy face*” post, so I can definitely see how that looks like I’m drunk. Sorry, but I was just responding to you from the prior post and happened to be high on life out here in a sleep deprived state breathing fumes from a burnpit.

  55. Arvis:

    CarlB,

“Apology accepted?”…… you smart-aleck. *shakes fist*

    -Arvis

  56. CarlB:

    Arvis,

    *heeheeh*

  57. CarlB:

dwh is a “happy panda”… he must’ve gotten KungFu Panda with the Arcade edition… panda poo… *chuckles*

  58. harry sachz:

dwh, lock_down was trying to badmouth it, but anyway.

And yes, there are downloadable car packs for Forza. They become free around 4-5 months of being out.

  59. darkwhitehair:

that was a South Park reference you Philistine…

thats great harry… if only more people played it online like Halo or COD…

  60. lock_down:

harry, I was not trying to badmouth Forza….I was badmouthing the disc swapping, which, as a statement of fact, is something that stopped after GT2.

I mean come on, Forza 3 on two DVD’s, Star Ocean on three DVD’s, you’ve got to admit that for the “most powerful video game and entertainment system” (credit: Microsoft) disc swapping is a bit arcane in this age.

But anyway, picking up on downloadable car packs though, isn’t that the all games will work in the future?

Say for a racing game, instead of buying a game full of cars, you receive a sparse amount of cars and then have to pay to download them as you progress, and they never become free.

It’s only a matter of time before main parts of a game become the paid download themselves, alongside expansions and add-on packs. In other words, you pay-to-progress.

  61. Happyhockum:

    ncaissie:
“the PS3 because its BETTER THAN THE 360.
Nothing to do with which one is cheaper.”

    According to you.

Pity the sales numbers don’t back your claim up.

As I have said (often) the 2 consoles are about the same, one slightly better at one thing and the other slightly better at another.
    Nothing in it really.

The 360 has a bigger game catalogue (which might mean something to people buying a game console one might have thought) and a better on-line service (even if you do have to pay mere pennies a day for it).

The Blu-ray drive in the PS3 means nothing to me (I have a much better multi-region – including multi Blu-ray region – stand-alone) and is in fact an added cost I have no reason or desire to pay for.

    The rest is sheer fanboy-ism.

  62. SW:

So you concede that the Wii is superior to the 360 due to its vast sales numbers!

    Muahahahahahahahahahahah. haha……….ha…….

  63. CarlB:

    SW,

Actually I think he just conceded the 360 is better than both do to it’s amount of quality games and better on-line service. Sales numbers just happened to back up the price point.

  64. SW:

Meh, I was jsut trying to provoke a reaction!

I really couldn’t care what sells what, and what games are out on what machine. I see game i like, i get it and play it.

Damn the smiley embargo. Damn it I tell you!

  65. Happyhockum:

It’s not just the console unit sales either, game sales per unit (exclusives excepted of course) are seeing the PS3 trounced by both XBox & Wii.

The upshot is that things look grim for the PS3, neither MGS4 nor LBP have been the console sellers they were expected to be, I see no serious reason to expect KZ2 or GT5 to be anything other than a hit with existing PS3 owners but ultimately making little difference to PS3 trailing in 3rd place in the current battle.

How the mighty are fallen, huh?

Let’s face it, 3yrs ago who’d have thought that the very best the PS fanclub could come out & say about their next Playstation is that some day some time perhaps it might start to claw back from it’s current definite 3rd to maybe – maybe – getting a look in at that 2nd place in the next gen console wars?

    Talk about reduced expectations.

  66. darkwhitehair:

game sales per unit??? what the fuck are you talking about??? as I said… consumers are idiots… otherwise… a carnival game for the Wii wouldnt have sold more than a million units… dont fucking try to justify your console with game sales…

3 years ago I was happy with my PS2… the fact that Ps2 owners bitch about the PS3 means one thing… it means they care… same way people in the industry care about the RROD… what you call “hatred” or “jumping the ship” I call “EXPECTATION”

these are the same people who are fans of this brand… just like many people became fans of the 360 brand… thats why they bitch and cry when their console is busted… because they expect more from their consoles… and that is a good thing…

its idiots like you who dont care… all you talk about is financial this and profit that and price whatever… youre buying a fucking video game console… as long as you enjoy it… you shouldnt have to justify it to anyone else…

wow… I should get out more… the cold air gives me a brain blast…

  67. harry sachz:

dwh, true, i’ve had a few online races on it but waiting for people to log on is a little longer than normal, more than likely due to the fact that it has been out for quite some time now, so long that EB Games won’t accept it as a trade in anymore.

lock_down, you obviously haven’t played Forza. The additional car packs are ‘nice to haves’, they’re not critical for the game. There are already a plethora of cars in the game, hardly ’sparse’ as you like to put it (i.e That Gran Turismo demo that Sony made you pay for).

And on the whole multiple disc issue, the only people I see complaining about it is the PS3 boys. Does taking 5 seconds out of your time to change a disc really have that much effect on your life? I know mine isn’t effected by it.

  68. CarlB:

    lowered expectations… “she’s a console!… and that’s good enough for me!”

    youtube.com/watch?v=_vNk_j3Z18A

  69. darkwhitehair:

keep that disk harry… in a year… hopefully if I get a 360… we will race each other… you better not win… bitch…

  70. Happyhockum:

    dwh

    go boil your head.

If you disagree fine, that’s great & I could care less, but your patheticly OTT name-calling BS is just such a bore.

  71. lock_down:

Oh sorry harry, I missed the part where I said I had bought GT5P.

    Where was that?

I also missed the part where I said the content specifically in Forza was sparse. Given that it spans two DVD’s, why would I suggest it would be sparse?

Oh yeah, maybe because I didn’t say neither did I.

  72. darkwhitehair:

raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaight happy… when you cant place facts on the table… you take the high road… sure you dont care… thats why you come back to “inform” us how we are wrong…

dont worry you keep us entertained…

  73. Happyhockum:

    dwh

    High road nothing.

This is a thread about sales numbers.

Naturally when the numbers look bad for the PS3 and someone says so you rush in to whine that people aren’t talking about the games.

You routine is pretty obvious & tired.

…..and what’s all this “us” & “we” BS?

I am making points as I see fit to anyone who is interested, not you especially and neither am I particularly interested in whether you think yourself right or wrong about anything especially.

Do try and rein that ludicrous ego in a tad, eh?

  74. darkwhitehair:

sure happy… sure… problem is.. you never talk about the games… look at all your previous posts… in all the articles… you always talk about sales numbers… and the same old crappy arguments and “facts”… atleast I can appreciate the different games on the different consoles…

you talk up 360 sales numbers till someone mentions the Wii sales records… and then you change it to “games sold per console”… then its “sales of AAA games” and how many “exclusive” games… and next youre gonna compare how the paint job and disk tray is so much more MACHO than all the others…

its the same old shit… and guess what… if you had any sense… you would blog it or go to a more active community… but you dont… because you like your little soapbox among 10 people… and all you do is bitch and whine…

congrats… give blorge more page views… go ahead… make em more money… that certainly will prove that you are right…

  75. Happyhockum:

    dwh

    Wrong again.

In fact if you look rather than “change it” I have never done anything but appreciate the Wii and it’s success.

Sorry but your one-eyed viewpoint and your obvious expectation that everyone else is just the same is just so wide of the mark it’s funny.

  76. lock_down:

Why don’t we just end all this by saying that the PS2 owns every console ever made, and that by that token, all three systems this gen are a failure.

    No?

    Okay then.

    Carry on…

  77. CarlB:

well… according to the PS3 fanboy argument… pacing and time on the market are the real keys to console success… so… I guess the Wii does own every console ever made in sales lock_down… even the (angels sing in harmony) holy PS2.

  78. lock_down:

Well, I’ve never said it’s all about pacing and time on the market…I’ve said it’s all about games…and those games are coming this year!!

    That’s as long as they don’t slip into Q1 2010, then Q2, then Q3…

What’s the 360 fanboy argument then?

  79. harry sachz:

Poor Ps3 fanboys, using conjecture and fond memories of the Ps2 to defend their shiny black dust collector.

  80. harry sachz:

    @ dwh,

Sure, i’ll even loan you a few of my cars to get you started. If only I can put penises on the car’s decal, that would be cool.

  81. darkwhitehair:

YES!!! We will play big spoon and little spoon..

now didnt that feel good?? talking about games for a change?? I feel so “pure” now… alright.. back to the bellyacheing…

  82. CarlB:

    lock_down,

I wouldn’t know because I am not a 360 fanboy (continues to play PSP and DS while in Iraq, still needs to finish FFXII and Persona 4 on PS2 when getting back, looking forward to playing multiplats RE5 and FFXIII more than any exclusive title scheduled for release this year).

I would imagine the 360 fanboy argument could be “it’s all about games”… and those games currently outnumber the PS3 by almost 2 to 1 now, not some vaguely promised ever shifting point in the future… but then again the average PS3 owner has more than enough games to keep them busy. If not they can just go back to their PS2, or PSP, or DS, or then buy a Wii, and if they are still bored they could buy a 360… excuse me while I get back to my PSP and FFT.

  83. CarlB:

Hey PS3 fighters, check it out this joystick, looks pretty damn cool:

“the (XCM) Dominator Joystick for PlayStation 3 is all set to ship next week. The highly programmable arcade-style stick includes a Combo Attacker and Rapid Fire mode for borderline cheating, and the four memory buttons enable macros to be stored and kept at arm’s reach. Of course, a gaming joystick wouldn’t be a gaming joystick without a superabundance of blue LEDs, so you’ll certainly find those there as well. You can toss in your pre-order now if you’d like, but make sure you’ve got $89.99 free and clear before doing so.”

    engadget.com/2009/01/17/xcm-dominator-joystick-for-playstation-3-ships-next-week-for-89/

  84. harry sachz:

Aahh…. I see you’ve played knifey spooney before!
