YouTube for TV on PS3 wastes your time

January 17, 2009

YouTube for TV on PS3 wates your time YouTube recently implemented a new feature called “YouTube for Television” which is currently available on the PS3 and Wii. This feature streamlines all of the benefits of YouTube and optimizes it for the TV. As I delved into the new feature on my PS3 I realized how much of a time waster it really was.

Two days ago I received an email from Sony’s usual PR distribution telling me to check out “YouTube for Television.” At first I thought it was just YouTube with a fullscreen option. However, after ignoring this feature for a couple days, one of my colleagues recently pinged me and told me to check out this new service.

I decided to check it out to see what all the hoopla was and to my surprise the whole interface for YouTube was reworked to work seamlessly with my PS3. When I entered the YouTube for TV, the box letter browser transformed into a widescreen interface which looks more like a PS3 application than an Internet browser.

The whole experience was streamlined for TV use with a universal navigation system. All of the buttons you would ever need were present on the screen at all times unless you were in fullscreen mode. The “relevant” and “most viewed” buttons are there as well so that you can easily get hooked onto the next video.

The YouTube team did a great job implementing the features to work seamlessly with the PS3. They have managed to not only get me to waste a great deal of time on my computer looking at random videos, but they have now gotten me to literally spend a couple hours watching various videos in-front of my TV in my living room.

I started watching some political comedy shows, such as John Stewart’s The Daily Show, which somehow led me to videos of news anchors flipping out on national TV, like Bill O’Reilly. The one major takeaway from the YouTube for TV feature is that it will suck away hours of your time subtly without you even realizing it. Do we need to become zombies in-front of our TVs despite being one in-front of our PCs?
