Gamers will equally own a PS3 and Xbox 360 in the future
One of the hot topic issues many gamers have been rabid about is how well their console of choice is doing. Although most multiplatform gamers who own all of the systems really don’t care as much about who is beating who. In the future, most gamers will most likely not care about the console war as more gamers become multiplatform owners.
The hottest debates always seem to happen between the PS3 fans and Xbox 360 fans. It may be because both systems sort of cater to the same audience. However, those unfortunate gamers that can not own both systems mainly due to financial reasons are usually hard-pressed to put the other console down and vice versa.
Realistically speaking, of course if you love playing games and you had the money to spare, who wouldn’t mind owning both systems? I am sure many fanboys out there will undoubtedly have a half baked transparently lame answer, such as “the system has no games that interest me.”
Let’s face it; despite all the fanboy hate towards Halo 3, calling it “overhyped,” it is a very solid FPS game. Also, Gears of War 2 is definitely worth owning despite fanboys criticism calling it “Gears 1.5.”
There are fanboys who also attack the PS3 and its exclusive lineup even with games like Metal Gear Solid 4, calling it “mediocre” despite being the second highest rated exclusive game of 2008 after LittleBigPlanet. Fanboys might even say that the PS3 doesn’t have that many games, even though the system was panned by many to arguably have the best game lineup of 2008.
Since both consoles basically cater to the same audience, I believe that eventually both the Xbox 360 and PS3 will reach parity with each other in the US in terms of sales. Once both systems have equal number of units sold in the US, maybe there will be peace and love on both sides as they give proper credit and respect to the console exclusive games that deserve it.

I think Gears 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 were both great…
However, I am anti-M$ enough to pass on playing them. I own an ipod and a PS3, when I finally break down to get a new computer, I am choosing an Apple.

“…peace and love on both sides as they give proper credit and respect to the console exclusive games that deserve it.”
Yeah, right, like that’s ever gunna happen.
“In the future”, something will have to give. I can’t see Sony and MS co-existing together in the gaming arena.
And given that MS has the money, I think we can kiss goodbye to PlayStation.
I think Barnabe you may have to end up paying & playing MS after all…
If you’re going to get an Apple, you can’t go far wrong with the “old” white Macbook…it’s a workhorse.
January 19th, 2009
I was half kidding… I’m not really that fanatical. I would like to try out a Mac though. I’ll look into the old MacBook.
If I were to get a second console, I think it may be a Wii. Just because it is so different, which is a bonus as a second console. The 360 definitely has a lot more games I would actually want to play though.
January 19th, 2009
Seriously, I’ve had my white Macbook two years and never had a problem.
One of the best things I’ve ever bought.
I think some of the 360’s best games my eventually find their way onto the PS3.
Given how BioShock was not coming the PS3…
And now that Sony Online is teaming with Valve and putting content on Steam, I wouldn’t be surprised if Left 4 Dead turned up on the PS3 soon.

I don’t like Microsoft as a company, but I think I dislike Apple even more (used G4s for 2 years on my last course). Oh look, I am so pretty and only have one button. I’m about 3 times the price as a similar spec PC, but I am beautiful.
Granted it depends what you use it for though, Macs do have their perks. I’m arguing it from the perspective of design. I just pretend my lovely iPod is nothing to do with those evil people.
Hi, I’m Roy, and I’m a PC.
January 19th, 2009
I know I will own em both…
have fun never getting the ability to play decent PC games barnabe you twat…
January 19th, 2009
I am just waiting for somebody to make a xbox360 emulator for the ps3, say through linux or something
January 19th, 2009
I can see that a game like Killzone 2 is going to be great for ps3 but it just isn’t enough for me to buy another console. At present xbox has just got too many great AAA titles.
January 19th, 2009
If Ps3 hits sub $350 AUD then I may pick one up, however at $700 AUD currently they’re just too expensive. Anyway, Arvis promised to buy me a copy of Resistance 2 if I get one.
January 20th, 2009
I know how you feel Harry… I bought my PS2 for $400 AUD and thought the first price of $800 was riddiculous… what the fuck arvis… I thought we were best buds… why the hell are you buying harrry stuff then??
fucking backstabber…
January 20th, 2009
Probably because I am a better kisser than you.
January 20th, 2009
dwh, the PS3 was $1,000 AUD when it was first released here. Australia always seems to get the short end of the stick in terms of the price of consoles.
January 20th, 2009
Nope, I just don’t see this one myself.
I know people with all 3 of this gens consoles (in real life).
I don’t know anyone with more than 1 of them or that bothered about getting one of the competitor consoles.
I can also honestly say that everyone of them thinks game prices for consoles are outrageous.
PS3 used to have a reasonable gambit as a Blu-ray player too but even that has now vanished as cheaper stand-alone Blu-ray players to the same ‘profile 2.0′ spec are now available.
January 20th, 2009
I keep my video card fairly up to date because I love online MP FPS’s on my PC better then consoles. With that in mind it kind of eliminated the need to get the 360 as 90% of their “AAA exclusive” catalog also appears on the PC. Like someone also already pointed out, the games also tend to be up to $20 cheaper in some cases.
January 20th, 2009
better “than” I mean….
January 20th, 2009
If I buy a Wii Ncaissie should buy me something…
January 20th, 2009
Buy a wii and mod it lol
I have a wii and the kids like it.
I like a lot of the wii games also but it just lacks the mature gmaes like far cry 2.
January 20th, 2009
Also I wont buy a 360 until I find one for $50 or less.
January 20th, 2009
Ha! I agree, I have the more mature area pretty much covered with the PS3. And although Little Big Planet and Ratchet and Clank were both amazing… the Wii does offer quite a few fun platformer types of games.
I was always really hesitant about the 360, due to quality issues. If they come down a bit more, and I can be 100% assured that it won’t fail or scratch discs, then I’ll but one. I just don’t feel the console is there just yet though.
January 20th, 2009
Royzy,
Would you say you like Sony as a company then? Why not by a VAIO instead of a MacBook?
Back on the article,
On the whole “money, fanboy” argument, I would say that now time is a more important factor, as one console is more than enough for most gamers and available time they have and the several good games on either the PS3 or 360. Even though the 360 does have almost twice as many games overall (in all genres and review score windows), the PS3 has more than enough games to keep any gamer that also has a job or school to contend with busy enough. Beyond this, their next consideration might be a handheld (DS and or PSP) or their old (or a new) PS2. If you actually have enough time to totally exhaust all the quality titles on all of these, maybe a bit more balance in ones life is called for. Unless of course you desire to only play only the absolute best of each of the consoles, in which case I could justify all three present consoles, but even then (granted I am probably an exception here in Iraq without my 360 for over a half year) I am hard pressed to get through the best on the DS and PSP alone. I didn’t even come close to playing all the quality titles on the PS2, and I imagine it will be the same for many gamers and the 360 in this generation.
January 20th, 2009
CarlB,
Do I like Sony? Yeh I guess I do, when it comes to the products by them I own (PS3, headphones, TV, etc). As a company itself, can’t say I know much about them.
Yeh I would probably would buy a Vaio over a Macbook. Though my preference would be Boxx or Armari.
January 20th, 2009
Sony has never tried to a monopolie either.
January 20th, 2009
Sony has never tried to FORM a monopolie either.
January 20th, 2009
Royzy,
Maybe not such a good idea as they just recalled 440,000 units for causing fires.
Barnabe Jones,
I don’t recall when they were ever in a position to either.
January 20th, 2009
So you guys won’t buy a 360 unless it comes down in price and even though the Jasper version is out now you still talk about reliability, but you will spend more money on a system that tries to be a 360. Clever!! That’s what I’ve been saying about the PS3 it has to come down to $100 for me to even consider getting a duplicate wannabe 360. There is only 2 games that intrest me so spending $400 will not cut it just to play 2 games.
January 20th, 2009
One of the main reasons I am a Sony fan is Sony’s first party exclusives.
120 studios vs 3 studios… Or Gears & Fable vs MGS 4, Uncharted (series), GT, Ratchet and Clank, Wipeout, Warhawk, Resistance (upcoming: GOW, Infamous, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, Kill Zone 2, etc, etc)
I don’t envy Gaylo… or this upcoming Allan Wake. So I am more than happy that I own a PS3 and not a 360.
January 20th, 2009
I won’t by a 360 for two reasons.
1. Its the worst designed console in the history of consoles with its failure rate.
2. Most of its greatest/few exclusives can be purchased on the PC.
Who’s to say the Jasper chipset wont have the same issues……The Falcon did.
January 20th, 2009
Given the amount of studios Sony own though, it should be coming up with far more lucrative franchises.
OK, Gran Turismo is certainly the biggest franchise ever to solely grace the PlayStation, and Sony must be mightily relieved that they own Polyphony.
But the reality is Sony should have bought into the right studio when times were good. I bet Sony could have purchased controlling stakes in Square Enix or Namco — maybe even Take-Two — all those years ago; before those developers’ share price grew on the success of games on the PlayStation.
I agree that while the studios that Sony does own and have purchased have produced some of the best games ever to grace the PS2; GT, ICO, God Of War, Shadow of the Colossus, etc. But GT aside, they’re not console shifters.
And nor will upcoming games (again, GT aside) from Sony for the PS3 sell systems.
I have no doubt God Of War 3 will be stunning…hell, the first two were incredible…but it won’t help sell the PS3.
Look what Microsoft did with Bungie. Sony should have done the same with other developers.
Far too late now though.
January 20th, 2009
Oh, and Royzy…a Vaio over Macbook??
Have you taken your medication this week..?
*would put smile with tongue out emotion but will refrain due to likely moderation*
January 20th, 2009
forget Chuck Norris… I now have a new idol.
gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21933
Lock_down, as they say hind sight is 20/20. Both Square and Namco have grown a lot this generation. I also agree that if it’s one thing M$ can do – it’s hype a game. MGS4 was easily light years better than Gaylo, but it didn’t have a marketing push behind it.
In a world were Wii Fit is the best selling game of all time, I realized that I might not want my console of choice to be the most popular.
January 20th, 2009
Oh Cad, Sony realized long ago it couldn’t compete with a 33% failure rate.
On a serious note, even if the Jasper fixes the problem, I still couldn’t justify buying a 360 at this point. I just don’t like MS’s business practices. I know Sony isn’t squeaky clean either, but there’s just something about the way MS goes about things that really bothers me. I also don’t want to help out a company that knowingly put out a defective product.
January 20th, 2009
“I also don’t want to help out a company that knowingly put out a defective product”… at the consumers expense.
- I think that sums it all up nicely.
January 20th, 2009
Wylie, completely agree.
Microsoft has never found its way into consumer electronics. And what concerns me is Microsoft’s attitude to consumer electronic products, what with the 360 problems, and the Zune issue. Robbie Bach said recently on the 360 and Zune problem that consumer electronic devices are “complex”.
Well yes, they are. But that hasn’t stopped Sony and Nintendo managing to ship probably over 800 million home and handheld consoles between them without the possessing the problems that plagued the 360.
Putting out a defective system unaware of the problem is one thing; but putting out a console that was knowingly faulty is another; and it’s quite clear MS knew the 360 was faulty.
And it’s only taken them 3 years(!!) to put a new chip in.
January 20th, 2009
Did Ivans PS3 really break down?
Wylie77,
Sony has it’s fair share of defective products being put out on the market (see Vaio number above as well as other electronic goodies in the past, including consoles). Microsoft also doesn’t have nearly the hardware manufacturing experience that Sony does, yet Sony still winds up putting several hundred thousand defective units on the market today after decades experience.
January 20th, 2009
Hardware manufacturing experience shouldn’t come into play as MS doesn’t put them together themselves. The decision to release a product after a known fault exist, does however fall on them.
The PS2’s failure rate wasn’t close to that of the 360’s. Sony recalled the product which sounds like what MS should have done. By not recalling it they know they’ll get a couple of repeat buyers that are too lazy/stupid to bother with the return process.
January 20th, 2009
Lockdown and CarlB,
I don’t care especially for the Vaio, but I wouldn’t want a Macbook. If I get another computer, it’d be either by Boxx or Armari.
CarlB,
he told me it stopped reading discs. Apparently he spends his time now playing GTA4 on his 360.
January 20th, 2009
Ivan_360 is his gamer tag.… he now spends his days slamming the PS3 on bloges.
January 20th, 2009
WHAT THE FUCK PEOPLE!!!
we just had this conversation… we all came to an understanding that… um… WELL WE HAD SETTLED THIS ARGUMENT!!!
jesus… I go to sleep for 12 hours and the whole thing falls apart…
Guess what… ALL the consoles suck… cus they cant handle Crysis… ohhh yeah!!!
January 20th, 2009
I feel sorry for you Harry… after watching zero punctuation… hearing that most games cost like $100 AUD… and you have no Gamefly like services… it pisses ME off…
on a better note… you could start like a gamefly service… I bet that would be perfect for Australia…
January 20th, 2009
look what patcher is saying now ….

So you don’t like MS but you perfer the shaddy practice of Sony. MS has way more ethics then Sony on any given day.
January 20th, 2009
As much as I feel dirty saying this, DWH has a very good point. What started out as a pretty civil discussion about the possibility of owning both consoles has degenerated into the same old ‘my cock is longer than your cock’ discussion. And here I was thinking that there was some hope.
January 20th, 2009
And anyway, we all know that Ivan has the biggest cock.
January 20th, 2009
CAD – How so? Off of the top of my head I can give at least a few examples of M$ corporate douche baggery. Can you please give me a few for Sony?
-Monopoly Lawsuit
-Knowingly putting a defective product on the market
-Timed Exclusives
January 20th, 2009
harry you didnt feel dirty last night… OH SNAP!!!
CAD… dont be so naive… no big company is without faults… they all have skeletons in their closets…
dont judge their product by their asshole-iness…
XP was great… Vista sucks…
Bravia is great… will bankrupt you if you want to buy one…
also Ivan has the bigger boobs… I have the bigger cock… know the difference harry
January 20th, 2009
Microsoft got in trouble for trying to pay someone to remove ‘bad stuff’ about them from their Wiki page. That is the best I can do right now…
Something that really annoys me about Microsoft is Internet Explorer, and their constant avoiding of following W3 standards. Instead trying to say that EVERYONE else is wrong.
And paying to hold other businesses back. Thats not cool.
January 20th, 2009
just use Firefox Roy… and lets not talk about this anymore… cus im a PC bitch…
I thought about getting a Mac… but found it was overpriced as the gaming rigs… so Id rather have a Alienware or HP gaming rig than a Mac… but perhaps… when I sell all of your souls and get decent amounts of cash… I can buy a mac..
January 20th, 2009
DWH,
Of course I use Firefox, but not enough people do, that is the problem. Web developers have to do extra work just to get sites to appear correctly in IE.
I’m a PC man, but only because the only other options are Linux or Mac. Maybe I should go for Linux…
January 20th, 2009
Their both shady, so what are you going to do. I just picked one and I’m enjoying it. Like I said, I can’t pin down exactly what gets under my skin about MS. I guess I just feel Sony is the lesser of two evils.
January 20th, 2009
dwh, that was because I was pitching, not catching. Also, you really need to improve your kissing technique, all lips and too sloppy. I thought I was going to drown.
January 20th, 2009
umm… jesus… I cant compete with that kind of dark humor harry… I would bow down… but we already did that last night…
what the hell is pitching and catching??? Im so glad we are separated by oceans… ahhahahahahah
January 21st, 2009
phranctoast,
Hardware manufacturing experience comes into play regardless of whether or not MS puts it together themselves. They decided to get started, messed up royally, and paid the price for it. Sony also knew their latest VAIO’s weren’t wired as well as they could have been, and it was also “missed” in the QC process, so the decision to release a product after a known fault exists falls on both of them (though Sony has released many more faulty products than MS in it’s long history). PS2’s failure rate wasn’t close to that of the 360’s because Sony had already had decades experience making hardware (contracted out or not). Sony recalled the product which sounds like what MS should have done, except for the fact that 360’s were not causing fires like VAIO’s, hence a repair or replacement free of charge. By not recalling it and repairing it within a couple of weeks time instead they took care of their customers who had already invested in their product without having to make them wait exponentially longer. There will always be a few buyers that do not want to be bothered with the return process. I wonder what that process was like for Ivan and his PS3.
January 21st, 2009
Actually the 360 did cause a fire and a fatality was the result. No one actually died from the Sony battery fiasco. 14 injuries though.
January 21st, 2009
phranctoast,
Could you provide the link to the 360 fire and fatality story (engine search provides nothing)? I would be interested to read it.
January 21st, 2009
Credible news search that is.
January 21st, 2009
Oh my god, I would love to read that!! I don’t doubt it for a second though. M$ proably paid to have this swept under the rug.
January 21st, 2009
Here is a link, but it sounds like it was somebody trying to get rid of their kid and get some money at the same time as they were claiming it was a 360 that wasn’t even on the market at the time. It could have been an XBox, but no evidence was found. They did do a recall on the power cords phranctoast.

And one other that might be legit, but the power supply was “crammed in a tight spot with no ’space to dissipate heat’”

Sooooooo, what that proves is that the 360 kills babies and eats them….oh wait… just kills them
January 21st, 2009
Wow. I never heard that. I have to agree with you though, it does sound a little fishy. It is possible though. M$ did end up recalling the power cord after the fire. I wonder if this will actually end up going to trial… or if we will even hear about it again. At least they did the right thing afterwards, by doing an immediate recall.
January 21st, 2009
I always thought the PSU for the 360 was external. And I swear it has a little fan in it too… Doesn’t seem crammed to me… But ok :/
/me worries about his 360 adapter sitting behind his shiney tv.
January 22nd, 2009
SW, it is.
“crammed in a tight spot” as in sitting in the middle of a pile of papers/books, objects blocking the exhaust fan, etc.
January 22nd, 2009
Well as long as you don’t keep any unattended babies in front of it… you should be ok.

I remember when the PS3 first came out, a pikey in Austrailia (HE was a pikey, I’m not saying that Aussies are pikeys, just to clarify) got a faulty PS3 off the back of a truck.
The incident involved something to do with gas in him n his ma’s house and a spark going off in the PS3. It blew up the house and he ended up in a wheelchair and unrecognisable. Really informative story I know – I thought I might of remembered more as I typed.
