Real gamers are Australians – PS3, Xbox 360, Wii

January 20, 2009

Real gamers are Australians - PS3, Xbox 360, Wii Since Gamer.Blorge is an Australia based site, it piqued my interest greatly when the top 10 best selling games of 2008 in Australia was released. Just by looking at the list I can already see that real gamers truly live in the land down under.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the games littering the top of the list were mainly games on the Wii. It seems that Nintendo’s little console is dominating the top four spots on the list with Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. In the US, the casual market is huge in comparison to the hardcore market. However, in Australia the hardcore market dwarfs in comparison the the casual market.

The highest hardcore game on the list was Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3, clocking in at number five. Apparently there are more hardcore PS3 owners in Australia than Xbox 360 owners. It seems like the vast majority of the gamers in Australia love exercising while the remainder enjoys jacking cars at gunpoint.

The list gets even more ludicrous as it tops off with Big Beach Sports for the Wii, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl coming in at number nine. However, since SSBB is a great game it does deserve to make it into the top 10 list.

With the rapidly growing casual market in the US, I wouldn’t be surprised to see similar numbers in America soon. The Wii sold over 4 million units in November and December. I am sure that the vast majority of the new Wii owners will be running out to purchase their own copy of Wii Fit soon. Check below for the full list.

Australia’s best selling games of 2008

1. Wii Fit – Wii
2. Wii Play – Wii
3. Mario Kart – Wii
4. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games – Wii
5. Grand Theft Auto IV – PlayStation 3
6. Grand Theft Auto IV – Xbox 360
7. Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training – Nintendo DS
8. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games – Nintendo DS
9. Super Smash Bros. Brawl – Wii
10. Big Beach Sports – Wii

WHAT!!! Australians play games??? I thought they throw boomerangs and wrestle with alligators and ate dingo babies to entertain themselves…

also.. Spotted Dick is quite a delicacy… I will never forget that Camping trip… *shudder*

  2. Mike Ferro:

    DHW,

I think you broke the record for the fastest comment.

You must be the #1 Gamer.Blorge fan. ;)

  3. darkwhitehair:

hahahahah atleast it got a response from you… *whispers* be my fwend pweeese…

I usually F5 all the blogs while watching TV or playing games…

also saw the story trailer of Street Fighter 4 and Killzone 2… they both look great… it made my knees go weak…

is anyone going to buy an arcade stick for Street Fighter 4?? let me know if you buy the $150 pro Arcade stick… cus Im thinking of buying it and would love a review…

  4. harry sachz:

Yes, every man and their dog has a Wii here, I am not surprised by that list. Except for GTA IV on PS3 outselling GTA IV on 360.

  5. Spideydog:

I’m also ashamed to say we also seem to love Wii ….. Not this little black duck !!!!

  6. lock_down:

I think it’s absolutely disgusting that GTA IV on the PS3 outsold GTA IV for the 360.

What a disgrace. We should find those involved and jail them.

  7. harry sachz:

I don’t see the appeal in a console who’s gimmick is appalingly bad motion sensing control. I was playing the beach cricket game with my nephew and performed what I thought was a beautiful hook shot which should have cleared the fence, but it ended up being a straight drive for a single.

    “Real gamers are Australians”

Are you saying Australians are “real gamers” because they buy so many casual games like Wii Play?

On GTA IV, 5 and 6 respectively, it actually looks pretty close (considering there aren’t any sales numbers). I think main reason PS3 managed to stay with 360 here is their advertising that only said PS3 after the GTA IV commercial, making it look like it was only for the PS3 to those who didn’t know any better. I saw several of these for PS3, but none for 360.

    lock_down,

I think it’s absolutely wonderful that GTA IV on the PS3 outsold GTA IV for the 360.

What a blessing. We should find those involved and sing their praises forever and ever.

  9. CarlB:

    620,000 360’s to 420,000 PS3’s in Australia… then there is the Wii with over a million. “Real gamers are Australians”, and they go… “THAT’s not a Wii-mote,(draws out Wii-mote w/attachment) THIS is a Wii-mote!”

  10. Barnabe Jones:

I have to say that the headline was slightly misleading… Asides from GTA, the rest are crappy Nintendo games. Sadly, I would bet that the US, UK, and Asia’s top 10 would look pretty similar. As we all know, shitty Wii games rule this generation.

  11. Wylie77:

Why the pic of Dundee representing Aussies. Why not AC/DC, or Silverchair? Or better yet a naked pic of Nicole Kidman!

  12. Bourne:

I agree with Wylie, why not use massive spiders raping you on the toilet.

  13. CarlB:

Ah yes, AC/DC… “Real gamers are Australians,” and they go…
    “I’ve got Big Wii-Motes,
    I’ve got Big Wii-Motes
    They’re such Big Wii-Motes
    And they’re dirty Big Wii-Motes
    And he’s got Big Wii-Motes
    And she’s got Big Wii-Motes
(But we’ve got the Biggest Wii-Motes of them all!)”

  14. Barnabe Jones:

What about Steve Irwin? That man is like a national treasure.

  15. CarlB:

Now that I think about the above should look like:

Ah yes, AC/DC… “Real gamers are Australians,” and they go…

    “I’ve got Big Wiis,
    I’ve got Big Wiis
    They’re such Big Wiis
    And they’re dirty Big Wiis
    And he’s got Big Wiis
    And she’s got Big Wiis
(But we’ve got the Biggest Wiis of them all!)”

  16. Arvis:

I don’t understand this article. Real gamers play real games (one would think) and there are only three real games on that list… so the headline should read: “33% of Australians are real gamers…” or something to that effect.

    -Arvis

  17. SW:

Ill have you know that Wii Play is so hardcore it makes games like Contra look pathetic (I prefered probotector).

  18. darkwhitehair:

    dont worry guys… Arvis hates australians… he’s biased… he also eatz puppies…

also real gamerz do it inverted… ohh yeah…

  19. darkwhitehair:

this is why I dont go outside.. I spend the day walking.. and my toe gets cut… HOW THE HELL DO YOU CUT YOUR TOE inside a sneaker?? riddle me that folks…

    also…

    youtube.com/watch?v=kI5HSf3SXPc

new show from the 1up show folks… its pretty good…

  20. Happyhockum:

    Woow, respect CarlB.

AC/DC lyrics mentioned and all from the earlier Bon Scott era!
    Nice.

(I saw Bon & the boys in his last London gig in Nov 1979 @ the Hammersmith Odeon/Apollo, amazing night….and yes there is a bootleg torrent of it too, recommended)

  21. CarlB:

    Happyhockum,

AC/DC was my number one band growing up (I suppose it still is in a lot of ways, depends on what I am in the mood for), and one of only three concerts I have ever been to. They blew the Megadeth and Iron Maiden concerts out of the water. I particularly liked the cannons during “For Those About to Rock”.

Then again, I also like the band Men at Work (almost completely opposite I know, but they still sound great to me).

  22. darkwhitehair:

who the hell is AC DC?? Im not a a big music buff so do enlighten me folks… its been awfully quiet here… and I dont like quiet…

  23. CarlB:

    what a joker.

  24. Wylie77:

AC/DC was in town on Saturday. I didn’t go. I’m not as big of a fan as I once was and the cheapest tickets were $90. The Dropkick Murphy’s will be here next month, saving money for that drunk fest!

  25. Happyhockum:

AC/DC are a (great & deservedly long-lived) Aussie hard rock band.

Unfortunately their original singer (Bon Scott, top bloke and all-round 100% genuine hard rocking geezer) died after a night out on the sauce in London in 1980
(alcohol poisoning rather than the usual ‘choking on own vom’ job).

    Such a shame.

Angus Young (their lead guitarist) is a rock/blues legend.
Angus and his brother Malcolm (also in the band as their rhythm guitarist) continue to create high quality new riffs and songs.

Hard rock may be an acquired taste but just about everyone I know into it knows AC/DC are one of the giants of the genre.

Men AT Work never seemed to take off here in the UK, the single (Down Under) did well but not much happened after that for them.

Aussie band ‘Rose Tattoo’ are worth a look if you’re into the rock vibe.

Loving seeing Aussi comedian/signer Tim Minchin on TV atm too.

  26. harry sachz:

DWH doesn’t know AC/DC? How old are you? Maybe the younger generation didn’t pick it up?

  27. darkwhitehair:

I told you Im not a music buff… I know movies and video games… and a lil about books… everything else I dont care bout…

    stop being a lil bitch…

  28. harry sachz:

Yeah, but AC (lightning bolt) DC you don’t know about?

If you guys rip on me 13 or 14 more times I am out of here!

  29. darkwhitehair:

I kNOW about AC/DC… I know they are a band… I know they have a track pack for rock band… I just never heard their music…

cheer up harry.. we all rip on eachother hear… its like one big insult orgy…
    YAY!!!

  30. CarlB:

    dwh,

recommendations: Back in Black, Who Made Who, Hells Bells, For Those About to Rock, DT, Sink the Pink, Are You Ready, Highway to Hell, Thunderstruck, TNT to name a few.

  31. Wylie77:

    CarlB,

I think “Giving the Dog A Bone” is more up DWH’s alley!
