Gran Turismo 5 – PS3 system seller but where the hell is it?
We talked yesterday about whether Killzone 2 was likely to be a system-seller for the PS3 or not. Sony clearly needs one game to rule them all in order to shift some units to the mainstream and I doubt it’ll be the FPS sequel. But Gran Turismo 5 could fill that gap, if and when it finally arrives. Seriously, why such a long wait?
Gran Turismo has always been synonymous with the Playstation brand. I recall seeing footage of the first game playing on the original Playstation and being blown away by the graphics. And then I played it and it was the closest I had ever seen a game come to real life. Except of course the fact that GT cars are seemingly invincible, even when crashed at 200 miles-per-hour. Gran Turismo 2 then followed.
Fast-forward to the release of Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec on the Playstation 2, a game which defied belief in terms of graphics, handling, and pushing the boundaries of what video games can accomplish. GT3 launched very early in the PS2’s life and went on to sell around 15 million copies worldwide. It also no doubt helped cement the PS2 as the console of choice in the sixth generation.
It’s now been four years since Gran Turismo 4 was released, and we’ve all moved on somewhat, most of us to shiny new consoles capable of almost-lifelike graphics. The PS3 is over two years old now and there’s still no sign of Gran Turismo 5. GT5: Prologue has been with us for over a year but we’re still holding on for the full version and I can’t really understand why.
It’s common knowledge that series designer, Kazunori Yamauchi, is a perfectionist who tests everything to the nth degree to make sure it’s all spot-on. But the PS3 needs this game and gamers looking to move up to this generation aren’t going to wait around for ever.
There are strong rumors that the reason for the delay is Polyphony Digital finally conceding to the wishes of the gaming community and adding car damage to the game. If this is true then it’s all good but does it really take two years to add car damage when numerous racers already have this feature as standard?
Gran Turismo 5 remains the most likely candidate to be the first proper system seller for the PS3. But no released date has yet been confirmed and the game is almost guaranteed to be put back to 2010. The PS3 will be in its fourth year by then and approaching middle age – which is just too long to wait in my opinion.

last I heard the devs were trying to come up with new content for GT 5P… which I will never buy…
so yeah… real GT 5 will probably come in 2010…

“…rumors that…Polyphony Digital finally conceding…adding car damage to the game.”
Isn’t it that the manufacturers have finally conceded to Polyphony to allow them to do damage?
“…does it really take two years to add… damage when…racers already have this…”
This is GT we’re talking about. GT is not going to implement poor damage modeling like in other racing games like whereby crashing head-on into a wall somehow means that the rear wheel comes off.
Whereas GT has had two iterations for each console, I think they’re making GT5 the only entry for the PS3 and will then solely concentrate on having GT6 ready for the launch of the PS4.
And a GT5 with the largest amount of cars, the most tracks, having damage and supporting online racing will keep it going until then.
I reckon it will be out this year. With GOW3 coming near the end of the year, Uncharted 2 coming in Fall 09, I can see GT5 coming near the end of 09.
Now, I wonder how many posts it will be before we see the “F” word…

DWH you’re right, the update for damage was meant to come out in autumn last year, but then Kaz said he was still concentrating on GT:P, tweaking it and fixing online issues when the patch was supposed to come out, suggesting he hadn’t even thought about the proper game.
I don’t mind waiting for the full game, there are plenty of games to keep me entertained in the meantime, what pisses me off is when they say its going to be released on Day X and then when it gets to day X there’s nothing to be seen.
But i hope they don’t skimp on the damage as Lock_Down says, i don’t think Kaz is the type of person to skimp on anything.

Forza has outsold every other ps3 game except gta4. I don’t see how GT5 will sway potential xbox buyers. The triggers on xbox are perfect for driving games also.
January 25th, 2009
Who said that GT5 was trying to bring in xbox users?
January 25th, 2009
I think 50+ million GT games sold proves that some will be enticed.
Why can’t Xbox users just accept that GT has a big fan-base with sales figures (GT3 especially) that proves it sells consoles as well?
I just can’t understand it.
If Forza is that good, GT5 will not be a threat will it.
So now someone has brought up Forza, isn’t the next topic about “physics calculations”…?
January 25th, 2009
Don’t care about Forza. Don’t care about damage. Get GT5 out and if there needs to be damage put it in the second release this gen (GT6). This is ridiculous, they are being far too perfectionist on crap that doesn’t matter to playing the game. GT5:P is done and over, get the full game out Kaz!
January 25th, 2009
I say they should just not of bothered with GT5:P, and just stuck to doing to GT5. I am happy to wait for GT5, because perfection is beautiful and I have plenty to play until then. Just don’t let us down Kaz.
Oh yeah, Forza = poo. [zips self into heat proof bag].

Had to respond to this piece of nonsense from 360 fanboy CON:
“Forza has outsold every other ps3 game except gta4. I don’t see how GT5 will sway potential xbox buyers.”
A few things:
1. Forza has not outsold every ps3 game. MGS4, GT5: Prologue, Resistance, Motorstorm, COD4, and plenty of other games have outsold it. And the only reason there are many copies are counted as sold for Forza was because it was bundled with a ton of 360s. Same way that Viva Pinata “sold” over a million worldwide, yet the sequel bombed horribly and will never reach a million (unless they bundle that as well).
2. It’s not supposed to sway potential xbox buyers; it’s for GT fans and potential PS3 buyers who are into racing sim games.
3. I hope you’re not implying that Forza is anywhere near the sales Juggernaut Gran Turismo is. The franchise is very loyal in where it does nice numbers in the US and Japan, and huge beast in Europe. Unlike Forza which had to be bundled for people to give a crap about since it’s intital sales weren’t all that impressive.
4. Stop being a fanboy.

I like racing better in real life (more exciting, though admittedly more dangerous as well, I usually do it under controlled conditions). 0-60 (my car only does 5.4 sec) is the best for me (not too many tickets that way, plus you get to keep your car), but I have been up to 142 before (I really didn’t feel like going faster, plus I think my car is electronically limited to 154). I’ve never really been that big into racing games though (played GT 1-4). I did like PGR 4… but I guess the real thing, even if it is in a car half as capable as what is portrayed in a game, is more fun for me.

What car have you got Carl?
I’d have you down as a Alfa Romeo man.

What about you?
January 25th, 2009
None, at the moment.
In fantasy land, I’d love a Dodge Viper…though it probably wouldn’t be long before I planted it into a wall.
January 25th, 2009
I hear you, but I think I would go for a ‘vette in that price range instead, if not a Tesla. I love my car and couldn’t see shelling out another 15 grand for something that looked better but couldn’t perform as well (350z) or for something that could beat it by about a split second (evo, sti) if driven just right. I still beat guys that don’t know how to drive their evo or sti, and it’s hilarious to see the look on their face afterwards. I got it for about $19,500 back in ‘03, and I haven’t had a problem with it since. I guess it is 5.3 seconds 0-60 according to Car and Driver. I haven’t even gotten a stage upgrade yet… not sure if I really want to either.

Won numerous comparisons in several U.S. automotive magazines from 2003 to 2005, including:
* 1st place – [4], Car and Driver magazine, November 2005. The SRT-4 competed against 14 other performance vehicles, finishing 1st in the front wheel drive division.
* 1st place – [5], Serial Thrillers comparison test, Car and Driver magazine, May 2004.
* 1st place – [6], Automobile magazine, March 2004.
* 1st place – [7], Sport Sedans Comparison, Edmunds, August 2003
* 1st place – [8], Sport Compact Car Shootout, January 2003.

It is absolutely ridiculous that gt5 has taken so long to be released. I don’t understand the hold up?? They have stated that the graphics will be the same as gt5p but with the addition of damage.
If this game isn’t released in the next 6 months it will actually start to look dated when the new wave of racing games are released at the end of the year.
This game should have been released last year.
January 25th, 2009
Someone in my town used to work on repairing racing cars…boy, he knew how to drive an Evo!
Even if I had a car that could be heavily modded or upgraded I doubt I would.
Insurance would go up for a start…

Phr, your schoolboy cars are no match for my bugatti veyron.
January 25th, 2009
Yeah, I’ve got a couple of those in the garage. I drive it for twelve minutes, get to say hi to the nice people at the gas station, another twelve, another hello, another twelve and I’m in the next state wondering why I can’t just have a jet fly over like in spy hunter to refuel me.
January 25th, 2009
or was it a helicopter? It’s been awhile.
January 25th, 2009
Wasn’t the veyron bested by another vehicle a while ago (top speed)?
January 25th, 2009
yeah bourne… never doubt my awesomeness bitch…
I heard another 360 exclusive racing game was coming out… Race Pro GT or something… which makes me wonder… with Forza and PGR… is there room for another race sim on the 360?? cus last I heard… Grid was great… this is just going to divide the race fans…
and yeah… Im in no hurry for GT 5… I would like them to set a date for GT 5 so we can get over this confusion… just set a date and stick to it… that way I wont buy any other race sim and will buy Motorstorm if my fingers get ichy for racing…

sim racers have always been a niche market and has never been considered a system seller, but hey, the ps3 needs all the hype it can get.
50 million for the gt franchise is funny when you consider how many games it took them to do it, and on a console with “150 million loyal ps users”.
until kaz learns how to do better physics, the game will continue to be the “bumpercar” king.

“Can I buy some pot from you”
January 30th, 2009
hey losers, it took PD and sony over 10 years and countless “versions” of GT games to hit “50 million”…..
do you honestly think GT will sell any more than 5 million on the ps3? hardly enough to sustain the ps3’s colossal losses they are creating for sony.
so, if any of you have the cajones; list all the gt games and breakdown of the each sales.
to try to use 50 million as a excuse why it’ll be a “system seller” if truly pathetic, but not suprising coming from the ps3 fanboys who have nothing better to hype.
it’s really sad. 10 years gt has been at this and they got outclassed by Forza in their first outing….
now that’s funny… oh well, keep hyping it, children… hype is all you guys got left….well that and a $600 paperweight….
