Could Fallout 3 DLC come to the PS3?

January 25, 2009

Could Fallout 3 DLC come to the PS3? Fallout 3 is considered by many to be one of the greatest games to come out of 2008. Bethesda Software has announced that there will be Xbox 360 and PC exclusive DLC for Fallout 3, leaving the PS3 version out in the cold. However, recent comments made by a Bethesda Software rep. may hint at a potential PS3 bound DLC.

The post-apocalyptic action/adventure/RPG game created quite a buzz during the busy holiday season. Bethesda Software also announced that the company shipped 4.7 million copies worldwide. However, it is very difficult to say how many copies the company has actually sold with no official sales figures released.

Sites such as the infamously inaccurate VGChartz put the total sales around 3 million sold to date. However, even this number is grossly inaccurate because the site stops counting sales for different regions at different times for different platforms. I would estimate that the Xbox 360 probably sold around 2 million units, PS3 around 1.6 million units and PC around 1 million units.

With such a large install base on the PS3, would Bethesda Software miss the opportunity to sell DLC on the PSN? Considering that Bethesda Software has put DLC on the PSN before with the previously released Oblivion it makes sense that the company would do that again.

Currently, Microsoft has a deal with Bethesda Software for exclusive dibs to the Fallout 3 DLC. However, what is unknown is whether that deal is a timed exclusive or a permanent one.

Unlike any of Bethesda Software’s past titles such as Oblivion, there is a stopgap measure in place for Fallout 3. There is an measure put in place of Fallout 3 to prevent the player from continuing the same game once the main quest has been completed. It feels like a crafty way for Bethesda Software to keep Fallout 3 “fresh.” It also prevent gamers from overplaying the game with their heavily invested character until the DLC comes out (a la Mass Effect trilogy).

Bethesda Software has revealed that the only way for the player to continue playing inside the world of Fallout 3 is through the DLC. The DLC removes the stop-gap measure put in place by Bethesda Software so that gamers could continue to use their leveled character to progress throughout the DLC and complete any missed side quests. This raises an interesting question as to why the PS3 version has this measure in place if there will be no DLC coming to the system.

When MTV grilled Todd Howard, executive producer of Fallout 3 as to if the PS3 version will get a patch to rectify this, he said, “Not at this time, no.” Does this mean that it could happen in the future? It seems like Bethesda Software planned Fallout 3 with this stop-gap measure intentionally. Following that logic, the company should have either released the PS3 version without this measure in place or at least announce that a patch will be released around the same time the Xbox 360 DLC comes out to rectify this issue.

However, both of these things did not happen which leads me to question if the DLC will indeed be coming to the PS3 later on in the year. One thing is for sure, DLC has become a hot topic (Tomb Raider) lately as developers have found crafty ways to market their games through this new method.

  1. CarlB:

So far VGC has Fallout 3 at 1.91 m (updated 3 Nov 08) for 360 and 1.13m (23 Jan 09) for PS3. If that is true another million or so seems like a reasonable estimate for 360 for Nov – Jan, putting it around 3 million total for 360 and paralleling what is reported to have happened with Black Friday Sales (3-1, 360’s to PS3’s sold). 2 to 1 is still pretty significant however. At least the PS3 version has trophies now.

    CarlB,

VGChartz has been proven to be extremely unreliable relying heavily on: trends/scaling/guessing

Suffice to say it is an interesting site and a good place for fanboys to hangout at, but I wouldn’t put too much stock in any of the numbers they put up.

I am going to guess that Fallout 3 on the PS3 most likely sold much more than Motorstorm:PR which is said to have sold over 1 million units reported by Sony.

I would estimate the actual break down to be something like this:
    X360: 2 million
    PS3: 1.6 million
    PC: 1 million
    total: 4.6 million

which would put it a bit under the initial shipment of 4.7 million.

I would say Fallout 3 probably sold approx. 1 million more after those initial shipments – probably 50%-Xb/30%-PS/20%-PC
    breakdown.

I am guessing the sales have started to wind down to under double digit sales figures, as they do after launch month.

  3. CON:

As an xbox user I expect nothing less from microsoft when securing these games and xbox gamers usually repay them in game sales compared to ps3.

I wasn’t that bothered about the new gta4 dlc out next month but after seeing the trailer I can’t wait.

  4. SW:

Meh. Own it for 360 and not getting DLC.

    Oblivion was better anywhoos!

  5. Barnabe Jones:

I’ll have to rent this one day maybe. I was a little iffy about the battle system. I’m not sure I would like the slowed down, pick a spot and shoot battle system. I prefer to keep my FPSs and RPGs separate thank you very much.

As a PS3 owner the only exclusive DLC I envy is the GTA. If RockStar wasn’t tied up in making DLC, I think we would probably being seeing a next gen Vice City or San Andreas. So we all are missing out on an entirely new game, so M$ can gets its exclusive 5-10 hour DLC.

    Happy Australia day Mike!!

  6. Royzy:

Barnabe, the battle system thing put me off a bit, until I heard you don’t have to use it. And it is supposed to be cool enough for you to want to anyway.

    Mike’s an American…

  8. CarlB:

    Mike,

“VGChartz has been proven to be extremely unreliable relying heavily on: trends/scaling/guessing…”

“I am going to guess that Fallout 3…”
    “I am guessing the sales…”

  9. Barnabe Jones:

Wait Mike’s American? Then who’s Australian? I thought gamerblorge was based in Australia? If not, then where am I getting this from?

Roy – I’ll have to rent it. I am interested in giving it a try. I’ve only read about it. I haven’t actually seen the game in action yet.

  10. harry sachz:

    hehehe CarlB

  11. Barnabe Jones:

With all of his ACDC knowledge, I knew Carl B had to be an Australian.

  12. CarlB:

I have got to say, as a U. S. Marine, Australians and Brits both are the coolest people I have hung out with, whether it was on Embassy Duty, vacation, or out in the field. They know how to drink, how to party, and how to rock like nobody’s business, and they truly renew my faith in humanity with their good will and good nature in general. Australian and British women are gorgeous and I must admit I have gotten the warmest welcomes in both countries.

  13. CON:

    Hi Carl

How does it feel that you got your ass kicked in Iraq??? Does COD4 make it all better?

  14. Barnabe Jones:

    Con,

Aren’t you quite the though guy to talk shit through a bloge via the internet? What have you done lately that has been of any significance or importance?

  15. CON:

I’m really loving the paradox in your last comment lol I was merely asking gaming question in relation to COD4.

Although I can’t say that as of late that I’ve joined an illegal war, tortured civilians and got my ass kicked in the process. So I would have to say you have me on that one.

  16. Barnabe Jones:

Thanks for proving my point that it was not an innocent question related to COD or gaming. This site is about gaming, take your politics else where pal.

  17. CarlB:

    CON,

Hello sir. I take it that you do not know much about me as an individual. I can honestly say that I have not “joined an illegal war, tortured civilians, or got my ass kicked in the process.” So I would have to say you do not have me on any of those counts. You are welcome to try on that last one though (you can meet me at Camp Al Taqaddum’s chow hall – you can’t miss it – in Iraq at any time and I will be happy to let you take your shot). I did join the Marine Corps to save lives, not take them. The year before last we did kill or capture the rest of the terrorists who were killing villagers and townspeople on an almost daily basis. We did save children and people who were shot or bombed and critically wounded. We did capture and destroy millions of pounds of explosives, IED’s, and illegal weapons caches. Total civilian casualty numbers did go down exponentially from what they were before we entered the country many years ago. The people wanted us to stay right now to help them continue to build up a police force similar or better to the one you may presently enjoy that protects your relative comfort and safety.

Since I started in the infantry I have helped build peoples homes, administer food, supplies, and medicine. Today I am in the tech field, working on my degree in psychology, and looking forward to going home to my wife and family. I am glad you have had the chance to enjoy the videogame Call of Duty 4. I haven’t really had a chance to since I have been out here, but I can say that first person shooters are not my favorite genre. I can see how a person like you may enjoy those games though, and am glad that you can in relative safety and freedom. I can tell you have some issues, so please share with us what you do, the hardships you have had to endure in life, and your first hand experience and knowledge of the Iraqi people and the United States Marines. Semper Fi.

  18. Barnabe Jones:

That’s why we love you Carl B!

  19. Barnabe Jones:

I just wish you would buy a PS3 allready *wink*

  20. CarlB:

Thanks for the support Barnabe, it means a lot out here. I just saw the PS3 on amazon as a deal of the day for $350… I just need to get back home first. My wife takes precedence though, so I went ahead and bought her a claddagh necklace for our second anniversary. I hope she likes it. Now if I could just get her more into videogames in general, I could buy her a PS3 for our next anniversary or her birthday (gotta love selfish presents). I’ve got to admit that Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, and Disgaea 3 all look pretty tempting, (and MGS4, Uncharted, Resistance, etc) let alone Suikoden and the other inevitable titles that will come out. Like you said earlier though, my list is getting longer and I have a lot of missed home console time to make up for.

On a more somber note, two of my fellow Marines were just recently posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for stopping a truck bomb and saving 50 others (the iraqi police ran away while they stood their ground and pumped rounds into the truck carrying 2000 pounds of explosives). One of them was only days away from going back home.

  21. CON:

The fact that you’re trying to spin things is quite sickening carl and very few in the world buys in to it.

Oil is why you went there.

But now all you have is a crippled ecomomy owned by China.

At least COD4 had WMDs I suppose…unlike other so called threats.

  22. CarlB:

    CON,

I just got through explaining what I have done as an individual and why I do it (I do not need to “spin” it and none of it involves oil or China) asking you your experience as well (so I do not make the same infantile mistake of stereotyping you). You seem very familiar with the world and videogames. Could you please share a bit about yourself, your job, and what country you are from?

  23. CarlB:

“The fact that you’re trying to spin things”…
    “At least COD4″…

  24. Barnabe Jones:

Carl B – From what I’ve learned about you, I can tell you are a good man. My cousin has recently received word that he is set to come back home in April. Get read for Resident Evil 5, from what I’ve read of the demo impressions, it looks like it’s going to be great.

    .

  25. Barnabe Jones:

Oh here is linkage for the RE45 impression…

    arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/01/resident-evil-5-co-op-report-you-need-to-find-friends.ars

  26. Barnabe Jones:

    Whops I meant RE5

  27. CarlB:

Thanks broheem, looks sweet. Gotta say though, I hope the co-op focus isn’t necessary to enjoy the actual.

  28. Barnabe Jones:

That was my thinking also… I don’t mind having a co-op portion of the game, but I don’t want the whole single player story to revolve around it. I guess I’ll have to wait and see for myself.

  29. CON:

“The fact that you’re trying to spin things”…
    “At least COD4″…

I see the art of sarcasim is lost on you.

“Could you please share a bit about yourself, your job, and what country you are from?”

No. This is a games forum. Nobody wants to hear your stories and that goes for you too barnabe with your fucking cousin.

  30. CarlB:

    CON,

    “This is a games forum.”
“I see the art of sarcasm is lost on you.”

It’s okay con, I can understand why you wouldn’t want to reveal anything about yourself.

  31. CON:

Yeah? Go fuck yourself carl. I think you’re scum.

  32. CarlB:

Aww. Don’t get all upset and emotional on me now con, you were just starting to impress me with your obvious excellence and outstanding contributions to humanity. Haha.

  33. CON:

I think I hear an Iraqi widow in the distance crying for her husband. Why don’t you go and liberate her.

  34. CarlB:

How could that be when you are nowhere near the country? That’s right, you imagine it. A year late on that one though, she already thanked us for killing the insurgent that killed her husband, wounded her and her child, and is now living happily in her new home with the child and rest of the family we managed to save enjoying our protection and those we are currently training so she can have a chance at enjoying for the first time in her life those comforts you have taken for granted all of yours. Enjoy COD4… have you killed all the terrorists in it yet? Have fun, enjoy and be appreciative of your relatively luxurious life, and remember, “this is a games forum”.

  35. CON:

“she already thanked us for killing the insurgent that killed her husband, wounded her and her child, and is now living happily in her new home”

Comments like that are making me doubt you’re a marine. That is a very very convenient story linking to my last comment! Lol

It’s bad enough if you’re a marine getting your ass kicked in an illegal war……..but now you have me thinking that you’re a wannabe marine posting your exploits on a fucking games forum!lol. This is beyond pathetic if true!

  36. CON:

Also I am yet to hear of marines being allowed to post on games forums lol which you are constantly posting in all hours of the day! Surely this is a major security risk???

Last I heard marines were only allowed to send emails over a secure network to family members etc. I think you’ve been rumbled lol but I’m happy for you to prove me wrong.

  37. CarlB:

It seems you are yet to hear of a lot of things, like things are winding down in Iraq, Marines eat breakfast lunch and dinner and have down time (when they can get on the internet as well), and they can post on game and other forums as they are Americans as well as Marines. It is not a security risk as I have revealed nothing classified to you.

When did you hear this and who did you hear it from? You seem to be getting highly inaccurate information quite often. “I think you’ve been rumbled lol” hence your “go fu@< yourself carl… I think your scum” post without a similar response from me. Perhaps a little self awareness would go a long way. Have a great day.

  38. Barnabe Jones:

HAHAHAH @ CON. You must have me mistaken for someone who gives a fuck about what you care or think.

Carl – People like you are the reason I hang my head high and say that I am proud to be an American. Don’t waste too much of your time arguing with this asshole.

  39. CarlB:

Thanks Barnabe. People like you are the reason I do what I do.

  40. TurboSpool:

Where do people get there info from? I am sorry to butt in but how do people that havent been to Iraq think they know more about people that have witness (seen with two eyes) what is really happening over there? The only thing that amazes me more than the the comment being said by Con are the amazing amounts of ignorance people have towards things that they haven’t seen for themselves and yet talk as if they have. U.S. Marine Corps OORAH!! I was on the first wave of OIFII and am proud to have server those people over there. They deserve to have people fight for them and was a humbling experience in my life to see what we have that they don’t and be able to share that. You have not only my thanks Carl as a fellow Marine but my respect for you sacrifice made.

  41. CON:

So where are the WMD’s again?

  42. Lnatsa:

How the hell did a thread about Fallout 3 suddenly become this, but back to the topic, it would definitely be nice if Fallout 3 patches and DLC were avaible to the PS3 but i’m doubtful that it will happen.

  43. CarlB:

    con,

I don’t know where the WMD’s are, we only managed to find a few million pounds of explosives and weapons caches.

    TurboSpool,

Thank you for your continued support and for your service here before that helped to pave the way. I know things were a lot rougher here back then, so I salute you. The people here are grateful and are now enjoying the provincial elections without incident. Semper Fi.

    Lnatsa,

I would have to say ask con on that one.
