Is Killzone 2 a PS3 seller?
Killzone 2 may be one of the most hyped games ever after Halo 3. The initial reviews are rolling in for Killzone 2, and from the look of things it looks like the game may pull it off. Currently, Killzone 2 has an average rating of 95 on Metacritic. However, the big question is – will it help Sony sell some PS3s?
Ever since Sony revealed Killzone 2, the hype has been immense. Everyone said that the PS3 could never produce graphics like those shown in the target render trailer. However, Guerilla Games have proven themselves by surpassing that trailer on so many levels.
Mech Gameplay
Killzone 2 could sell extremely well but may not affect the PS3 sales at all. On the other hand, it could also help sell boat loads of PS3s. It is quite difficult to say with so many variables in play. With the current state of the economy, I wouldn’t be surprised if that were to play a large role in the sales of the PS3.
One could also argue that it is most likely that all the hardcore gamers already own the PS3, thus sales would not be affected as much. However, there may be hardcore Xbox 360 owners that may get a PS3 just to play the game. Its not that unfathomable since many gamers did end up purchasing a PS3 just to play Metal Gear Solid 4 after all.
We have seen highly acclaimed titles such as Halo 3 sell millions while Xbox 360 sales remained practically untouched. This may be one of the best indicators of how things will play out on the PS3.
I suspect that there may be a slight bump in sales but the PS3 won’t sell boatloads. However, I do predict Killzone 2 will sell boatloads. What predictions do our readers make? I will make sure to come back to this story after the fact to see who has what it takes to be the the next Michael Pachter.

we already had this conversation… Killzone 2 wont sell nearly as much as CoD 5 or Halo 3 on the first month… possibly never… MGS 4 JUST sold 1 million in US… yeah I made the negative prediction so I dont get my hopes up…
most of the consumers are fucking stupid… you cant expect much from them…
I saw more than 5 minutes of Afro Samurai ads on gametrailers TV tonight…
I have seen NOTHING on Killzone 2…

I love this site, always looking for the silver lining in the black PS3 cloud.
PS3 lacks consumer confidence, even huge tiltles like the oft quoted MGS4 have sales that are dwarfed by similarly profiled titles on Wii or Xbox360.
Somehow, Sony managed to go from virtually owning the console market with PS1 & PS2, to giving away 75% of it’s market-share almost overnight with the marketing failure that is PS3.
At this stage in it’s life, PS3 should be well on its way to massmarket pricing and have a installed user base of 25M – 35M.
Sony have actually undone much of the PS brand building they established in the previous two generations.
PS3 is now so far behind the curve that I doubt any single title will have much of an impact on sales, especially in a tight cash market where the brand has become so compromised.
I suspect more disappointment for Sony its fans.

Well i pre-ordered KILLZONE 2 like two weeks ago from GameStop is my first game pre-ordered in my entire gaming life (10 Years).This game is going to sell very good hopefully. I don’t think is gonna sell many more PS3 consoles but it will help Sony big time. If you considered yourself a real gamer you will have to prove that by buying this FPS god. KILLZONE 2 has set the bar real high so now there’s no way in hell Microsoft can survive competing with SCEA games.

I haven’t pre-ordered KZ2, but i reckon it will be one of the PS3’s real system sellers. I reckon it will sell like hotcakes, more than MGS4, but obviously less than say GeOW2. It will be a good tart to 2009 for Sony. And whether or not this game gets 100 or 50 out of 100, people will still buy it.

Anywhoos, I don’t usually buy first person shooters on consoles, but Killzone has me intrigued…
As for advertising, just slap a nice ad on with plenty of action and some nice high review scores( My suggestion shows you why I am not in advertising).
Will prolly push some consoles but not a whole lot.

DWH you haven’t finished mgs4?!!! why the hell not?! I got halfway thru MGS4 on big boss hard and then i realised i had killed 6 people ( you need no kills, no alerts, no regeneration , no deaths, no stealth bandanna and for it to be done in 5 hours)

the contrast is fucked up on my crappy TV… so its hard to see properly in the day… and at night the TV is usually used by others… so its either MGS 4 or play COD online… I feel so ashamed at myself…

Chillyfish….when you make statements based on numbers, make sure those numbers mean something and that they are true. To say things like

without knowing facts it makes you sound, well, Stupid. Check your numbers kid. The 360 didn’t reach “25m-35m” margin for “3 years” and it was still under 20m after “2 years”. PS3, over 20m in 2 years. NPD Group research number show this.
I don’t know what you sources, if you have any other that propaganda that is feed to you. But I would ask of you to find some reliable one before you make another post please.

Bourne, Gears 2 and Mgs4 have sold about the same amount of units, but of cause Gears has sold faster. But still check you number please people and NOT at VGchartz.com! The estimate their numbers! Companies don’t report numbers to them.

They should advertise it heavily (they already sunk a lot of money in development) and make sure it’s displayed in all kiosks. It’s a game that really needs to be seen.
In all honesty, why shouldn’t it be a system seller when Gears of War is? It’s graphically superior-check, cover system-check (new to fps’s), and awesome Multiplayer.

It may sell quite a few copies, but it won’t contribute to the sale of PS3s the way MGS4 did.
The reason being is that it is not a well known franchise like Metal Gear, and the people that are aware of the franchise were disappointed with the first outing.

funny story… Motorstorm apparently sold 1 million copies faster than MGS 4… faster as in I heard about it selling a million before MGS 4…
anyways… yeah Id have to go with harry on this one… but we also take in the fact that MGS 4 has HUGE backstory… which a newcomer to the series has no idea about… so he has to spend more than an hour reading all the shit on wikipedia before he is up to date…
whereas with Killzone 2… its simple action shooter… so it doesnt make anyone cringe at the sight of 2 at the end of the name…

Wow! G4 is so partial to the 360 I usually don’t watch it… but I just watched there review of KZ2 and they gave it 5 out of 5 stars. I was amazed watching the game play. I can’t wait for this game. Halo/Gears look pathetic in comparison.

this game is good but not $700 good (thats what its going for here).
i think anyone who will buy a ps3 this year it will be for multiple games not just KZ2.
the only game that will make people buy a ps3 just for than game and only that game is GOW 3 that is going to blow everything out of the water once it comes out.

ok….someone help me out…..if there are so freakin many systems being bought every freakin day, then how will there be anymore people to buy them….you would think by now that almost everyone would have as freakin xbox or wii by one just by how much they are selling….last time i checked, when a game comes out, i buy it, not another ps3 too….so basically the fact that Killzone 2 will be a system seller will have to rely on 360 fans…..a little on people who want a ps3 (yes not alot bc the ps3 is freaking expensive…so called) and alot on 360 owners….1. they dont have a ps3….2. they can easily afford a ps3 with all the money they waste on 360….BUT the fact that 360 owners seriously hate the ps3 with a passion, its going to be a tough one for killzone 2 to be a system seller….so the only chance that killzone 2 will be a system seller would be if 360 owners actually had some common sense and a normal brain……im not being a fanboy, just saying that anyone with common sense would buy a ps3 for killzone 2….its ten times more hardcore than any 360 game, so why not…..

I think it’s pretty safe to say that a large portion of 360 owners are FPS fans. And it’s also safe to say that KillZone 2 is most likely an amazing FPS. Good point that 360 owner’s tend to hate the PS3 with a passion. I think M$ must be sending out mind control frequencies over Xbox Live. Come to think of it… they do have that swirly circular logo….
Most people this gen bought a Wii. Once they get boarded of Wii Music and realize there are not too many good games available on the console, they’ll start to look elsewhere.

I guess I’m in the minority in being a 360 owner but not being an FPS fan and not hating the PS3. KZ2 is looks great and should be a great play for anyone who likes the FPS genre.
