2009: The year of the PS3 – Xbox 360, Chuck Norris runners-up
Every console has its good years and bad years. So far this generation, every year, apart from the first when only the Xbox 360 was on the street, has belonged to the Wii, at least in terms of sales. But there’s surely more to it than that. Is 2009 really going to be the year of the Playstation 3?
We run a poll (at least one and maybe more) every month here on Gamer.Blorge. Some ask important questions, and some are just for fun. This one was a mixture of both. This poll question was always slightly loaded because people who own just one of the three current-gen consoles were clearly going to vote for that console out of loyalty or wishful thinking.
So as well as telling us which console our readers think is going to have the best year, it may also have given us a breakdown of the consoles primarily used by those same readers. So let’s take a look at how our readership is skewed and what their opinion of the year ahead is.
We asked the question: 2009 will be the year of the…?
PS3 – 1,016 – 53% of all votes
Xbox 360 – 336 – 18% of all votes
Norris (Chuck) – 244 – 13% of all votes
Wii – 174 – 9% of all votes
PC – 54 – 3% of all votes
PSP – 38 – 2% of all votes
Nintendo DS – 29 – 2% of all votes
PS2 – 29 – 2% of all votes
Total Votes: 1920 – January 12 – February 1, 2009
As you can see, the PS3 won by a very comfortable margin, taking over 50 percent of the votes. Not bad when there were seven other answers that could have been chosen. No surprise to see the Xbox 360 in second place, but the margin of victory, 1,016 votes to 336 votes, was a bit of a shock, at least to me.
Chuck Norris, an ever-present in our polls, came third, beating out the Wii. I’m now convinced that were a console manufacturer to call their next console Chuck Norris, they’d do fantastically well. Maybe Sony should take note.
Regardless of the skewed nature of the result due to our readership, I still think the result is correct. No surprise really when most of you think I’m a Sony fanboy anyway but hear me out.
The Wii will continue to dominate in terms of sales this year, with the Xbox 360 and PS3 once again fighting it out for second place. On that score, I do think the PS3 has a chance of outselling the Xbox 360 over the course of the next 11 months. And that’s for one reason, and one reason alone: games.
Only the most blinkered gamer, of any system, wouldn’t accept that the PS3 has the strongest line-up of games this year. Killzone 2, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, and MAG are all surely going to be massive. And that will still leave Final Fantasy XIII and Gran Turismo 5 for early in 2010 (fingers crossed).
2007 and 2008 were lauded as “the year of the PS3″ and things didn’t quite turn out that way. Could 2009 finally make this much parodied sentence actually ring true?
Be sure to vote in our new poll over on the left there. We fittingly ask, “Which game are you most looking forward to in 2009?” We’ve brought back the ability for readers to add their own answers but will rescind the option and possibly even scrap the poll altogether should any overtly unacceptable answers be added.

Come on Dave enough of these silly polls, you told us last year was going to be the year of PS3. Make up your mind.
Any self respecting gamer will have bought their consoles by now and made their choice.

This thread is going to get ugly.

No doubt your new poll will have ps3 games topping it again saying as you’ve missed out the biggest 360 exclusives.
Halo 3: ODST
Alan Wake
GTA4 Episodes
February 1st, 2009
“116 votes to 336 votes”
Did you mean 1016 to 336 votes Dave?
I just voted Killzone 2 for the new poll, Uncharted 2 wasn’t there and I didn’t realise we could add our own again.
February 1st, 2009
Thanks Royzy, typo fixed
CON, Alan Wake was an oversight. I’ve now added it to the poll. There was only room for one Halo game so I added Halo Wars. ODST can be added by someone else if they want it there.

Dave,
If all of those PS3 games you mentioned come out in 2009, then i’ll owe you a Coke. However I have a feeling my 2 dollars are safe.
February 1st, 2009
Choke! -only- 53% of gamer.blorge viewers voted for PS3. Quite a bit less than expected, all things considered. /wink
Yeh, 2009 will be Ps3’s year…
or 2010…
2011?
February 1st, 2009
What exactly makes it the year of the ps3 or 360? Is it sales or is it games? If it’s games, 2008 was the year of the ps3 and so will 2009.
February 1st, 2009
Of course it was…….
February 2nd, 2009
2008 wasnt a good exclusive year for the ps3 i think sure it had R2 LBP MGS4 and maybe more but it cant compare with what’s in store for 2009 or 2010
February 2nd, 2009
Okay, so I own six out of eight of those mentioned (Chuck Norris came out the year before last to visit and thank us, not really owning, but probably as close as you could ever get with Chuck… I do not own the Wii or PS3 —yet). Putting the handhelds in there… is that really fair (let alone putting the rest of those consoles in there with Chuck)?
Seriously though, the PS3 had the better first party lineup in 2007, 2008, and 2009 with about 2 out of 5+ of those titles making it into it’s top ten, but third party exclusives combined with what first party exclusives there are on 360 seem to edge these out every year, especially considering the massive amount of multiplats that level the playing field.
So what is going to differentiate PS3 in 2009 more than in the past? Trophies and ranking is a catch up, Home is lacking, the bc uterus hole is still there, and price, even if it does come down, will still leave the PS3 the most expensive console on the market, while Dark Knight is still the best selling movie download on a Blu-Ray system.
I remember reading something earlier from a Sony exec about how their goal wasn’t market share, but to remain profitable (something about an armadillo or some such), so to that end, I think Sony will succeed with all of their products combined this year, but it still has a ways to go to have PS3 catch up with 360’s market share, and I do not think that will happen this year.
Regardless, both PS3 owners and 360 owners will have a lot to play this year considering the excellent third party multiplatform titles coming out like RE5, SFIV, XMen Origins, Alpha Protocol, Chronicles of Riddick, BatmanAA, Ghostbusters, RedFactionG, JustCause2, Tekken 6, BioShock 2, Bayonetta, Borderlands, Call of DutyMW2, DeuxEx3, Dragon Age Origins, Elveon, Ender’s Game, Marvel Utimate Alliance 2, Splatterhouse, and even Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, etc…. but I have to admit what could trump most of these for the hardcore is a good God of War 3 being released this year (it is this year isn’t it?).
So what more can Sony do? Full BC is obvious, availability of those titles on PSN, match 360’s price (all of this as a priority over investing any more in Home), and watch the cash flow (even if it takes a hit initially, it will give them a jumpstart). The buyout of studios is working for about 20% of titles, but it would seem that leaning toward third party exclusives might help them even more.
So when to do all of this? Just before the holidays of this year to 2010, the end of the PS2’s scheduled lifecycle, when it’s production should stop. Until then Sony will most likely ride the storm and concentrate on the smaller target now, gathering it resources and remaining profitable in a tough time on the market, not trying to gain major market share with 1 console while they are stretched amongst 3 and most likely putting major work into laying the plans for their next one.

“I remember reading something earlier from a Sony exec about how their goal wasn’t market share, but to remain profitable (something about an armadillo or some such)…”
Ah, good Ol’ David Reeves.
I saw that interview, he was clearly blagging some questions, but talked a fair bit of sense in others.
I thought his comment on third parties was interesting though; that Sony wouldn’t spend lots of money trying to stop MGS4 going multi-plat, and acknowledging third party studios having to go multi-platform.
It’s clear Sony is trying to be like Nintendo in not trying to depend so much on 3rd party like they have in the past; instead working to beef up their first party line.
After all the Wii doesn’t have Resident Evil 5, the Wii doesn’t have GTA 4; the Wii doesn’t have Final Fantasy…and yet it’s far and away out in front.
Certainly, the Sony developed titles are the ones I’m most looking forward to, and if Sony continue to invest in producing their own high quality/innovative titles, the dependency on 3rd party alleviates.
Hopefully though, their first party titles won’t start taking the route of Duck Hunt or something…

Every year is the year of Chuck Norris. I’m glad to see Chucky beat out the Wii.
PS3 has the most triple A exclusives, coupled with a price drop in 2009. The PS3 will dominate (the 360) this year.
February 2nd, 2009
I think the year will be for the PS3 but not just because of games but I think there will be a price drop that will help sales.

Are people realty looking forward to Halo Wars in 2009?… or do the xbots have nothing better to vote for?
February 2nd, 2009
I’m looking forward to a new twisted metal game the most, but nothings been officially announced so who knows when it will come out. Eat sleep play has to be working on something.
Not sure why Infamous or Uncharted 2 didn’t make the cut for the list.
February 2nd, 2009
I almost added Uncharted 2… That’s high up on my personal list.

What about home, mgs4 and little big planet? I thought these were going to destroy the 360
February 2nd, 2009
As far as technical achievements… they certainly did.
February 2nd, 2009
“What about home, mgs4 and little big planet? I thought these were going to destroy the 360″
Sony figured they’d let the shoddy architectural destroy the 360 instead.

CON, the 360 destroys itself half the time.
February 2nd, 2009
“Are people realty looking forward to Halo Wars in 2009?”
Yes, especially if it plays as good as BFMEII did on 360.
I’ll be busy playing the multiplats we both can and catching up though… is God of War 3 really coming out this year?
February 2nd, 2009
I reckon it could Carl…God of War 2 came out 2 years after GoW1, and was twice the length with better graphics etc, so it’s possible.
I reckon Sony are trying to build up to a blockbuster Xmas with Uncharted 2, GoW3 and GT5.
February 2nd, 2009
“the 360 destroys itself half the time.”
1/1165 the time and counting for me. Not too pleasing though it is now officially out of the extended warranty period, I hope they fixed it to last… ah well, it’ll just give me an excuse to get an elite for another three years… then onto the bc 720… then the 720 elite…
February 2nd, 2009
I happen to love BFME2….on the PC.
IMO (and I dont know if Ensemble is doing this) they need to implement voice control like Tom Clancy’s End War did to make a good/better rts on the console. Every 360 has a mic….

Well here we go agian. I just wish it was coming from Sony so I could rub it in your faces at the end of 2009. I bet Wii will slow down this year but does anyone care about the Wii here, I don’t thnk so, so lets just remove the non-hardcore console from the Convo. I think the 360 will have this year again ove the PS3. Also lets just be real this is a PS3 favoured site and it draws all the PS3 People because really do you guys have anything to play because your always here. Any Poll on Blorge will favour PS3 is some way. N E Wayz lets just be real and know that Halo 3 ODST will be the best selling game this year. Nothing will top it.
February 2nd, 2009
If an expansion pack is to be the best selling game of the year then that’s…sad.
February 2nd, 2009
phranctoast,
yep, not enough video horsepower in my laptop for it, thankfully the 360 covered me nicely. Every 360 has a mic, but as long as they continue to incrementally improve on BFME2’s and C&C3:TW’s controls they will be the only game console to have a trend of successful RTS’s.
February 2nd, 2009
I’ll have to rent c&c to see if they finally got the rts on a console right. Bfme2 was one of my reasons for upgrading my pc. The other was unreal tournament 3 which turned put to be disappontng when cmpared to 2004.

Considering multiplats are the bestseller’s on the PS3 (we’ll put those aside), I take it you didn’t care for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue?
February 2nd, 2009
At all you smartasses……each red light is a badge of honour. I’m on my third console on elite which started to freeze the other week but still love it
February 2nd, 2009
Nope.
I haven’t bought GT5P.

2009 – Year Of The 360!
February 2nd, 2009
If MS wasn’t scared they wouldn’t be planning so many releases around the time Killzone 2 comes out. They are so afraid of it it’s comical.
February 2nd, 2009
Yes it is comical almost as comical as Carlb getting his ass kicked in Iraq. LOL
But seriously as an xbox owner I think MGS4 was one of the biggest ps3 games that made me jealous. Killzone is basically another FPS which xbox has plenty of.
From a first time buyer perspective deciding between the big 2 consoles ps3 will probably need a few more FPS titles than killzone to compete with xbox although it’s a good start
February 2nd, 2009
“From a first time buyer perspective deciding between the big 2 consoles ps3 will probably need a few more FPS titles than killzone to compete with xbox although it’s a good start”
Umm, what does FPS stand for there?
If it’s First Person Shooter titles, then it confirms that the bulk of what makes the 360 tick is shooters…
If it’s First Party Studio titles, then they are coming… and I think that GOW3, GT5 and Uncharted 2 will be out by Xmas, so harry will have to part with his 2 dollars….though not that it makes any difference to harry, he’s a rich bastard…
I don’t know whether MS releasing Halo Wars at the same time as KZ2 is a bold move, or desperately trying to take some of hype away from KZ2.
Surely if Halo is so big for them they’d release it when there is no hyped-to-hell blockbuster PS3 title coming out.
Of course, some 360 users may argue that a PS3 blockbuster title isn’t coming out anyway…
February 2nd, 2009
No I was referring to first person shooters. I just can’t see someone picking ps3 over xbox in that regard, although I have to admit if Gears 2 hadn’t of been released a few months ago I’d def be a lot more jealous because I liked the first killzone on ps2 back in my anti halo days.
February 2nd, 2009
Just imagine if it was the other way around and it was Killzone that had been released a few months ago and Gears 2 was due out next month then you’ll probably see where most xbox users are coming from.
February 2nd, 2009
Hmm…Killzone 2’s metacritic rating has dropped to 93 already and most of the hyped reviews have already been counted. It just has to go down one more point for it to be critically regarded as ‘not as good as gears 2′.
I’d love to hear what the PS3 boys have to think about that scenario, I need a good laugh.
And I still believe my 2 dollars are safe. 2 dollars is going to be worth a lot more than it is today if the economy keeps going the way it is.
February 3rd, 2009
‘I’d love to hear what the PS3 boys have to think about that scenario, I need a good laugh.’
Erm, they don’t give a fuck? Just a thought.
But, worse than that, I noticed someone mention C&C3 as a good RTS? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
For the love of all things sacred remember Red Alert! And go play Supreme Commander or Sins of a Solar Empire! You shall see the error of you ways!
February 3rd, 2009
isnt Red Alert 3 a good RTS?? I mean I like company of heroes better and would probably buy dawn of war 2… but isnt CnC good??
February 3rd, 2009
harry… try as they might… we all cant have a game with game breaking bugs and broken multiplayer…
OH SNAP!!!
February 3rd, 2009
so… we have had some good reviews from credible sites… just saw the Gametrailers review… is it time to call it a good game yet??
does it live up to the hype?? who wants to call it??
anyways… people are bitching about Co Op… and thats what it is… just bitching… I like competitive multiplayer… I only played COD co op to get the trophy…
February 3rd, 2009
“Yes it is comical almost as comical as Carlb getting his ass kicked in Iraq”
What’s wrong con? Did a Marine wrong you in the past or something? Did I say something to offend you?
But seriously though, speaking from a 360 owner’s point of view, KZ2 can only help the PS3; and that the 360 has plenty of FPS’s is old news. Fortunately the entire market doesn’t revolve around 1 genre, and the PS3 is continuing to add to its library as it should, so it should continue to give you titles to be jealous of (God of War 3 will be the first for me).
lock_down,
“the bulk of what makes the 360 tick is shooters…” actually that and every other genre it outnumbers and outrates the PS3 in (all of them). It looks like PS3 could catch up in a few years though, especially if they keep up their pace of quality first party titles.
harry,
your two dollars has a lot of “potential”… but I agree with SW, most single console owners who have enough good games on their console of choice are not going to really care about a few percentage point difference with a another console’s exclusive title on MetaCritic; they will just continue to enjoy what they can, which right now is quite a lot on both 360 and PS3.
SW,
C&CRA3 on the 360 is a bad RTS? Is Sins of Solar Empire on a home console? I don’t happen to have a pc capable of playing it.
dwh,
“game breaking bugs and broken multiplayer…” (you’re talking about haze again?)
February 3rd, 2009
carl… whats up mon… why so defensive all of a sudden…
yeah Im bitching about Gears… as I keep saying… I hold Gears and Halo to a whole nother level… I expect those games to get 8 or near 9s out of 10… and yeah… being how innovative they were… they should set the standard for video games…
its like if I see a cover based 3rd person game… I will compare it to Gears and see whether they achieved the level of polish Gears had… same with FPS and Halo…
so it pisses me off… when critics and reviewers give it 8 and 9 when it has bugs and glitches… and I dont see 360 people getting pissed at this… they say… “well I dont play multiplayer… I just play horde mode”… thats fucked up…
Sins of a solar empire is only on the PC… many reviewers said it was their favorite RTS on 2008… you should check it out… or atleast check the reviews…
also did you play red alert 3 on the 360??? was it any good?? I was thinking of renting it on the PS3…
so… when do we call it?? can we call it now?? killzone 2 a success (game content wise) ??
February 3rd, 2009
CON… dude that was low… even for my standards… and thats saying something…
plus no soldier can stand against my dragon fucking Witch Hunter… Oooo RAH!!!
February 3rd, 2009
“Yes it is comical almost as comical as Carlb getting his ass kicked in Iraq. LOL”
Dave Parrack- Yeah seriously. Ban this fucker already! This isn’t the first time he’s done that shit. He’s got to go. He’s about 1,000x worse than SegaBoy
February 3rd, 2009
darkwhitehair,
Sorry, if I came off like that (I thought we were tighter than that bro?)… I haven’t played Gears of War 2 or Halo 3 yet, I just believe each console has it’s fair share of games with bugs and broken multiplayer, at least upon initial release; I see where you’re coming from now though. I am not big into Halo or Gears, but I think they set a precedent for home consoles in the genre and have only themselves to beat at this point (though future titles like KZ2 will only continue to add competition = yes, I believe KZ2 is a success game content wise from what I have heard and the reviews alone; mixed high reviews are still high reviews, and it is a top FPS on the PS3, which hungry owners will buy and make sure it becomes popular online – at least FPS fans).
I haven’t played red alert 3 on the 360, I have only heard about it out here and read the reviews. From what I hear on rts sites it is slightly better than BFMEII, and I loved that game on the 360. It may not be better than pc rts, but it seems to be among the best I can play in the genre unless I invest in a gaming rig (which isn’t going to happen soon, besides, now that wfg is going away, I still need to get achievements you know? *addict shakes from being away from the achievement factor for so long and thinking about it*).
Good thing I’m a Marine and not a soldier, which means I am free from the df Witch Hunter… I think the Army soldier says Hooaah, while in the Marines we sometimes say OooRah, but Semper Fi is better).
Barnabe Jones,
Is your cousin in Iraq as well, or Afghanistan? Any plans for when he gets back? Things are a lot quieter here now than the year before last that I was here, as we have pretty much wiped out all the active terrorist cells and taken their toys. The villagers feel safe now and are proud of their provincial elections this year, wanting us to stay to protect them while their police force and government infrastructure gets set, so we might be here a while longer. Looking forward to coming home soon.
February 3rd, 2009
Carl – My cousin is in the reserves. He’s on his second tour of Iraq at the moment. He will be coming back home in April. I’ve email back and forth with him a few times, and he says things have been fairly tame there lately – which is good to hear.
I’ve had another go at RE5 last night… and the controls are not as bad as everyone has been making them out to be. There pretty close to 4, but there are some multiplayer functions through into the mix. I think the game will be amazing. I’ll be picking it up the day it’s released.

Ahh, no PC carl.
Its not that C&C is terrible I suppose, its just that there are so many brilliant RTS games out there that C&C 3 looks a bit feeble imo (esp since it just feels like c&c generals/zero hour). But if you only have a console I guess its not a bad choice.
Oh and achievement schmievements! *grin* Get 4+ buddies, a vent/ts server, hit up multiplayer! thats where its at!

You seem to be “rumbled” con. I would suggest not broaching a subject if you do not want to hear about it. By the way, I happen to be in the Marines, not the Army, and this is the only forum I frequent.
SW,
Generals was awesome, I loved that game, but it was one of the last ones I had to make a significant expensive upgrade for, and shortly thereafter had some bad problems with my pc. Unfortunately, my replacement laptop (which is handy for deployments) won’t play the latest greatest properly. This combined with the full migration of gaming to 360/PS2/DS/PSP, not being a big multiplayer fan, and love for the achievement system makes it a no go for me. I would have to agree RTS is still much better on the PC, and will remain so for awhile, but I am encouraged by the progress on the 360 in the genre (PC RTS ports would also make sense on the PS3 because of the native support for mouse and keyboard, but it doesn’t seem to be the direction Sony wants to focus on right now).
darkwhitehair,
Alright, I haven’t met the witchalock so I will take your word for it.
I haven’t tried company of heroes but I have only seen good things about it.
On KZ2, I just crosschecked the MetaCritic score with the IGN (and Gamespot as an afterthought) review, which gave it 9.4 “Outstanding”. I trust IGN and Gamespot are not overhyping, so I believe as much a non-PS3 owner can that this is a top notch FPS on the PS3. Let me know how it turns out.
February 4th, 2009
well games like company of heroes and world in conflict… depend more on actual strategy than base building and resource gathering (which Im apathetic towards)
Dawn of war 2 (made by the CoH devs) is going to be similar in gameplay style… Id sell your soul to get a gaming Pc to play that game…
YEAH WITCHALOCK 4EvAR!!!
lolololololololololololol
roflcopter…
