New action game from Bioshock developers – PS3, Xbox 360

February 1, 2009

New action game from Bioshock developers - PS3, Xbox 360 The guys who made Bioshock are at it again, working on a brand new franchise. While other studios are laying off employees, it looks like 2K Boston is busy hiring staff to build up its new action-packed IP. The scant details indicate that this game may be vastly different from Bioshock.

The team created the award winning game, Bioshock not that long ago. The team worked on developing Bioshock for many years before the Xbox 360 was even released. The game did not disappoint, releasing to critical acclaim and is considered to be one of the best games to be released in recent years.

I enjoyed the game so much I actually own the Xbox 360 and PS3 version as well as the PS3 exclusive DLC. The studio definitely knows how to create an excellent story as well as gameplay experience. That is why I am so excited that they are working on a brand new IP.

According to the company’s recent job posts, the studio is looking to hire some employees to work on an action based game on the Unreal Engine. The game will have an extensive multiplayer mode. According to the job description, the game will heavily rely on the online multiplayer aspect. It is interesting to see the team take a new approach by focusing on multiplayer mode.

I am curious as to finding out what kind of game the team is conjuring. If any of the previous releases are to go by, chances are this new game won’t be coming out anytime soon. 2K Games has their hands full with Bioshock 2 and a new IP in the works. The game is currently being developed for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. With so many great games from 2K Games being developed, I am sure we can expect some blockbuster holiday releases.

  1. harry sachz:

I remember Sex Games 2 on the Commodore 64. It would be sweet if they remade that.

  2. hamburger:

Thank god EA couldn’t buy Take2.

  3. Barnabe Jones:

Is the exclusive DLC any good? I’ve been hesitant to get it.

  4. Barnabe Jones:

I should probably clarify… Is the Bioshock DLC any good? I’ve been hesitant to get it.

  5. darkwhitehair:

RE 5 DEMO IS LIvE ON PSN!!!

    CMON PEEPS!! play with me…

  6. Barnabe Jones:

Now?!?!?!? Really?!?!?! I would have thought they would have released it Thursday. Thanks for the heads up… I’ll download it as soon as I get home. If your on later tonight… let’s meet up. Just a warning… the game is NOT easy.

  7. darkwhitehair:

wait what time??? wait what time zone are you on?? damn…

  8. darkwhitehair:

    just started downloading… its 900 something MB…

barnabe… you got a mic?? anyways… I know the control is hard… cant shoot while moving… you got my back right??

  9. Bourne:

DWH i played it earlier, wasn’t bad… i hate not being able to move and shoot. The awkward controls are…awkward… belivee it or not lol. Probably won’t be buying it. ROLL ON KZ2 THIS THURSDAY FOR EU!!!!

  10. phranctoast:

I really wish they would get with the times and update the controls……. Dead Space did it perfectly.

It’s as if they artificially add to the challenge and difficulty by making the controls bad. Not cool.

  11. Arvis:

    Phranctoast,

What exactly would you like them to do with the controls? Would you like them to just go ahead and turn Resident Evil into just another third-person shooter? That’s not what RE is about. It’s always been about survival, strategy, and resource management. Not strafing, rolling, or kill count.

    -Arvis

  12. Barnabe Jones:

DWH – I have a mic and I’m in EST. I’ll be able to start downloading around 6:15. Crap… I might have to free up space on my hard drive. I have like none. I’ve already played both levels a few times so I have an idea how to play already. I liked control set up D the best. I’m not used to the 360 controller, so I think I’ll do better on PS3.

Bourne – KZ2 is releasing this Thursday? Or are you guys getting the demo? Also did you notice that Roy pulled ahead of you in the GamerBlorge trophy competition?

  13. darkwhitehair:

that is true… RE is supposed to have controls like that.. thats the only thing that seperates it from all the other games… I would say after Left 4 Dead… RE looks tame… but the challenge is in its controls…

plus if all the games look and feel the same… why would you buy them>??

but yeah… I fucking hate shooting and not being able the move… anyways… Bourne make me an EU account… I cant be arsed to do so…

    MAKE IT FOR ME WOMAN!!!

  14. Barnabe Jones:

I totally agree with you Arvis. The controls are responsible for setting the games tone. It’s tense, every bullet counts, and there is almost no room for error… That gets my adrenaline pumping.

  15. phranctoast:

I would like them to increase the difficulty and AI of the zombies/infected. Not make it more difficult to kill them by stunting the controls. RE stopped being survival horror by the time RE4 came out. I’m well aware how the olds one were and I believe games have progressed enough (every other third person shooter as you said) for Capcom to get a clue.

  16. Royzy:

Oh yeah baby, Bourne got splashed as I motor boated past with a hand full of trophies.

Regarding RE5, the ‘no-run-and-shoot’ doesn’t bother me, but I found the analog controls misleading:

If you use left stick, it controls forward/backward/sidestep and right stick for turning. This is all fine, I like it that way.

BUT as soon as you press down X to run, the control scheme changes and left stick gets to make you turn. They should choose one movement scheme or another, not mix them up mid flow. Crazy fools.

Generally I’m fairly impressed with it, though I don’t like that when you pump a body full of lead, the bullets don’t hit during the ‘reach out and die’ animation. It was the same with Resi 4.

If bullets were still making contact, it would keep you guessing as to whether you have ‘finished him’ or not.

  17. darkwhitehair:

what the fuck roy… how do you do it??

damn cod is holding me back… I HATE YOU ACTIVISION!!! fuck your veteran mode…

  18. Barnabe Jones:

Is it just me or does it take more than one head shot to bring those fuckers down?

  19. CAD:

I agree with the fact the Controls are messed up in RE5. I hate when a game relies on you to push another button to activate another. This layering of controls are just stupid. The controls turned me off so I think I will pass on the game too.

  20. CarlB:

    I didn’t mind RE4’s controls at all…

  21. Bourne:

HAHAHA DWH is still stuck on COD:WAW?!! holy hell .Me and Royzy both have Platinums now, you need to catch up to join the elite ranks. But yes i need to catch Royzy… im working on R2…. taking forever.

Barnabe – Its the demo, free on PSN without the need to pre-order.

  22. Barnabe Jones:

Carl – In 5 a lot of actions require pressing in two buttons at the same time… making it a lot more awkward.I would say the controls are harder than 4.

  23. Barnabe Jones:

Nice. I had to preorder the game, but it’s available on Thursday also.

  24. darkwhitehair:

DAMN YOU BOURNE!!! BURN IN HELL!!!

well I got stuck in one part in burn em out… I coudlve played 2 more games the time it took me to play this shitty game…

  25. Bourne:

HAHAHA cmon DWH get it together.

  26. Royzy:

I don’t think I’m that far ahead trophy wise and I’m not going to be getting my game on again (like I did a few days ago) probably until Feb 14th. Got an essay to start / finish for end of this week and 3 environment designs to do (2 painted in Photoshop and 1 in made in Maya) for the week after.

It’s LAME, I’m probably going to botch them pretty bad.

DWH, just put COD down and grab a few bronzies from some other games. Burnout and Uncharted are supposed to be the easiest to get Platinum on.

  27. darkwhitehair:

I hate you guys… I know some games that have easy platinums… thats what 27 podcasts will do to you…

BOURNE!! howd you get the COD platinum??? howd you do the burn em out level?? its too fucking hard… did you do the levels on after the other?? or can I just do whichever I want???

too fucking hard… hehe I know the secret platinum game… bitches…

  28. harry sachz:

The RE5 demo is old news, I’ve had it since last week.

  29. phranctoast:

LMAO at harry’s lame attempt at promoting an “exclusively timed demo”

    you hit a new low.

  30. darkwhitehair:

wooooow… I would so totally pay $50 to get early access to the demo of a game I have no interest in..

    EPIC WIN!!!

  31. harry sachz:

No phranctoast, I was saying that it’s old news to me because I played it a week ago. How that is promoting an exclusively timed demo is beyond me. But anyway, keep believing what you want to believe.

  32. CarlB:

“I would so totally pay $50 to get early access to the demo of a game I have no interest in…”

Are you talking about the pre-order for PS3 dwh?

  33. darkwhitehair:

no carl.. I am VERY interested in K2… will just create an Eu account… OH WAIT YOU CANT DO THAT!!!

I feel so awesome right now…

  34. phranctoast:

after playing through the demo there is definitely one thing I’d change. The simple ability to be able to walk and shoot at the same time. No running and gunning perse but walking. If you move while shooting it should also affect your accuracy. It drives me nuts that I can’t walk backwards and fire my weapon at the same time. The only positive thing a out the shit controls are that the enemy ai is so bad you can run away from
Enemies to gain a different vantage point in order to unload on them again. There been advancements in the genre and I wish capcom would have just paid attention. You don’t need it to be full out run and gun, but gimped controls to add to the intensity of the came seems forced and unnecceasary.

  35. Barnabe Jones:

Ok, I played again last night. It’s not that bad at all. I think the combination of the 360 controller, split screen, and playing with my girlfriend made things a lot harder. I think the controls are pretty similar to 4… but there are more team oriented functions in the controls. So there are layered commands in the control scheme, which at first makes it seem overly complicated.

I cleared both levels about 4 times each and only died once last night… because I was playing with an idiot.

This will be a first day purchase for me without a doubt. If anyone wants to play a quick round or two tonight, send me an invite.

  36. Arvis:

All this negativity towards the RE5 controls fills me with hope that the braindead, Xbot, FPS-hypnotized market will all pass on this game so sales of 360 version will bomb.

There’s really no market for “cranial” games this gen. If you have to think at all, the game sucks. If the game is slightly different at all, it sucks. If it’s too similar to other games, it ALSO sucks. There’s no answer with some of you people.

Do any of you realize that “kill everything” is not always the goal of a particular section of a Resident Evil game? The PRIMARY goal for the whole game is “Stay Alive.” If “kill everything” turns out to be the BEST way to “Stay Alive” than you need to figure that for yourself. If there’s a better way, find it. That’s the point! The fun!

Some of you are just annoyingly close-minded.

    -Arvis

  37. phranctoast:

I’m still buying it, but I have every right to add my opinion on the shit controls.

It Does not make the game better.
They do not need to restrict your movement. All this does is frustrate the player. If Capcom needs to rely on restrictive movement to scare you, they are clearly doing something wrong and need to work harder.

Geeze.. Chris acts like a mobile turret. You cant even move while you reload….ewwwww really scary..more like really fucking stupid!

Ive said it before, and ill say it again. Dead Space got it right.

  38. Arvis:

Don’t buy it, Phranctoast. You clearly want to play a different game, not Resident Evil. RE is not and should never be a third-person shooter. Go play Dead Space and don’t bother with RE, leave it to people who actually understand it. You’re SUPPOSED to feel MORTAL in the survival horror genre. Stop-and-Shoot is a MUST, because literally every bullet needs to count. Unloading an entire clip in the general direction of a group of zombies while strafing won’t (and shouldn’t) get the job done. You need to size up your situation and think, “Considering my abilities and the tools I have, what’s the best way to get out of this alive?”
Just because YOU suck at a particular control scheme doesn’t mean the control scheme is bad.

    -Arvis

  39. Barnabe Jones:

Arvis – I was going to send you an invite last night, but you were on and off so quick I couldn’t catch you. Send me an invite if you want to play through a quick round tonight.

  40. phranctoast:

You’re..right you completely understand it. you understand shitty controls. Stop and shoot is not a must. Its unrealistic for one. It adds frustration more than fear. I’m all for you accuracy being affected by movement. You want every bullet to count….limit the ammunition. RE stopped being what purist consider survival horror a while ago.

I want to play a Resident Evil game..but not one from the PSX days.
If they want to keep us from doing a full on run-and-gun, fine. But for the love of God please let us aim and walk!! The fact that you can’t, at the very least, shoot and walk backwards ruins the experience.

They go through great lengths to give the game a realistic feel yet they limit the characters movement in a way that is completely unrealistic.

  41. phranctoast:

The enemies are also a joke. They wander around you for seconds contemplating what to do. I get it. They need to give you time to stop…..aim……and finally fire. If RE5 had smarter, difficult enemies the game would be impossible.

  42. Arvis:

Phranc: Like I said, don’t play it then. I don’t like games I suck at, either.

Barnabe: I should be online in about an hour (5:30 US EST)…

    -Arvis

  43. Arvis:

    Phranc,

I’m coming off as a bit of a jerk in these last few posts. Apologies. But you’re definitely being arbitrary, which irritates me to the nth degree. You can’t say “I don’t like these controls, therefore they are bad controls.” That’s the definition of arbitrary. I DO like the controls, and would HATE a run n’ gun option, so to me the controls are great. They fit the game’s idiom perfectly and are part of what makes Resident Evil what it is. As a long time fan of the series, I can’t accept that changing the whole damn genre would be good for it.

Hell, I don’t even like that they put strafing in. Maybe I’ll get used to it.

    -Arvis

  44. phranctoast:

arvis. Don’t be a dick. It doesn’t suit you well. I’ve beat re4 multiple times with virtually the same control scheme. I’m entitled to my opinion. I just wish capcom could get with the times a learn to create fear without gimping controls.

  45. phranctoast:

Last post before you last one

  46. phranctoast:

a lot of people also hated the tps view all together. I found it brought so somethng fresh to series. At no point do I want to see re turn into gear or uncharted. Re5 like All the rest will have a kick ass story and end up a great game. No game is without it’s critisisms.

  47. darkwhitehair:

ARVIS!!! DONT PLAY RE 5… play sf2 wimmeeeeeee

also… with faster games like left 4 dead… dont you feel like RE 5 is like an old timer??

I dont like the controls… thats why gamefly is awesome… I dont HAVE to buy this game…

but will only rent if you guys play Co op with me… no reason for me to finish this on my own… specially since this is my first RE game…

  48. kevo:

yea left 4 dead is coming to ps3 soon

  49. darkwhitehair:

    sure kevo…. suuuuuure

  50. harry sachz:

I honestly would like Left 4 Dead to make it to PS3, it’s that good a game that I would like everyone to play it. It’s one of the rare online shooters that make it critical for everyone to stick together and help each other out, unlike most shooters where this isn’t necessary.

However in saying that, it is frustrating playing a game of Left 4 Dead where your 3 teammates think they’re Rambo and just run around on their own. Or the people that deliberately disturb the witch. Those games don’t last very long.

  51. harry sachz:

Also, any Aussies reading this, http://www.cdwow.com.au is selling Street Fighter 4 on both platforms for $63. I’ve already ordered my copy.

  52. darkwhitehair:

first of all… valve has no PS3 programmers… thats why they had to outsource Orange Box to EA… who fucked it up… TF 2 has no bug fixes on PS3…

also it takes longer to release fixes for consoles than for PC (I heard specifically bout 360 dont know bout the PS3)

I have no problem with Left 4 dead not coming to the PS3… I would rather have it on one system rather than finding different people on different platforms… one of the benefits of exclusivity… it keeps the community in one place…

plus with K2 and R2d2 (couldnt help myself) and LBP… why would you want more multiplayer games??? need I remind you of Street Fighter 4??

I dont even have LBP and R2d2 and I dont even get enough time to play all my games multiplayer…

  53. darkwhitehair:

    kotaku.com/5145829/crytek-buys-free-radical

HEAR YEE HEAR YEE!!! Crytek BUYS FREE RADICAL!!!

RADICAL ASSHOLE PREDICTS CONSOLE PORTS FOR CRYSIS!!!

    HEAR YEEE HEAR YEE

  54. harry sachz:

You don’t want the option of a highly rated, fun game on your console? Suit yourself!

  55. darkwhitehair:

lets face it… Left 4 dead is best played in PC… unless Valve hires some PS3 programmers and supports it properly… theres no point to have that game in the console…

even the 360 which is supposed to be similar to program for… got the shaft with Team Fortress 2… so why bother with console versions…

  56. harry sachz:

Well you don’t know what you’re missing out on. Would you like a tissue?

It’s an absolute blast on 360, I don’t care about the PC version because I don’t have a gaming PC.

  57. darkwhitehair:

I would like to play it on the PC… if I didnt have such a shitty PC… but yeah given the chance… if Left 4 dead was discounted I would buy it in an instant (if I had a 360)… sigh… now Im depressed…

that was cold harry… real cold…

although… being a regular Counter Strike player.. I have to say… the guns and their sound effects are copy pasted from Counter Strike… EXACTLY copy pasted… that is a fucking shame…

  58. harry sachz:

    i thought you had a modded 360?

  59. darkwhitehair:

nope… how would I play over LIVE with a modded 360???

  60. harry sachz:

You can play Left 4 Dead offline with AI. I thought you mentioned about 6 months ago that you had one. Maybe I was thinking about someone else.

  61. Royzy:

I’d love to have Left4Dead on PS3, so shut up DWH you cheap skate. You only don’t want it on PS3 because you would need to pay! Dude are you still leeching off someones wireless?

If Crytek buying Free Radical means Timesplitters 4 is released, I would strip down naked and run to the hills screaming with joy.

  62. darkwhitehair:

yeah I had a giant PC games collection too 6 months ago… sold em all and have gone legit now that Im in THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!

    AMERICA FUCK YEAH!!!

fuck you roy… yeah Im stilll leeching someones elses wireless hehe…

whats so great about Timesplitters?? inform me biatch…

also Valve games are always more fun on the PC… a lot more mods and maps are available…

  63. Royzy:

What so great about Timesplitters? Timesplitters 2 was one of the best fps shooters on ps2. And Timesplitters: Future Perfect was one of the few games that was worth trying to play online.

And what isn’t to like about a games that has satire, monkeys, robots, zombies, busty policewomen and nurses? Among many other ridiculous characters. The character design was awesome.

Virus mode was one of the best things about it. And throwing bricks at people.

    Ahhh good times.

    frd.co.uk/timesplitters4/pictures/001/sister_jobeth_vs_zombie_apocalypse.jpg

  64. Barnabe Jones:

Am I the only one who wasn’t impressed by Left4Dead? It was a decent online shooter, but it lacked the tense atmosphere of survival horror games.

  65. CarlB:

“Stop and shoot is not a must. Its unrealistic for one.” Actually phranc, this is how we shoot most of the time. When we do shoot and move at the same time, we usually move while walking steadily, not running (an exception is when we are moving to another position with nobody to provide covering/suppressive fire – the likelihood of this fire killing the enemy is slim, but it can help to make sure they stay covered… depending on their experience). Of course, then again, we aren’t fighting hordes of zombies either. Theoretically zombies are not too afraid of getting hit by enemy fire, and would not be your typical smart enemy. Though considering this is a videogame and some added realisms just would not be fun (like you get killed and you’re dead, game over, period… or not being able to recover relatively quickly from serious wounds), while other unrealistic gameplay mechanics have been added to the most “realistic” games to make the more playable, it is safe to say that no control scheme (including this one) is perfect.

  66. phranctoast:

yeah. I moved all discussion about my issues with the controls to the two new topics about it.

  67. CarlB:

    yeah. nice dodge.

  68. CarlB:

Sorry, see now where you put it would be better with walk and dodge in the other thread like I described above in this one.
