Game noobs complain about RE5 controls

February 3, 2009

Game noobs complain about RE5 controls Resident Evil 5 has been receiving massive hype from various sites around the world. It has been receiving enough hype that newcomers or “noobs” have started to take notice. However, with the demos released on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, many of those newcomers have started to question if Resident Evil 5 is worth all the hype.

The Resident Evil (RE) series has been considered by many to be genre defining. Not only is it genre defining, it also helped give birth to new franchises such as Gears of War. Cliff Bleszinski revealed to EGM that many of the gameplay mechanics were inspired from Resident Evil 4.

One of the best things RE does well is create a horrifying atmosphere, similarly to Dead Space. However, the game really excels at creating a horrifying gameplay experience. The gameplay literally causes pure panic to the player. With zombies closing in, you will have to make strategic decisions on not only how far back to run but on where to run to.

Literally every bullet and every misstep could mean the difference between life and death. Changing this gameplay mechanic so that you could walk/run and shoot would completely change the dynamics of RE5. You would no longer have a Resident Evil game but a run-and-gun action-shooter.

Unfortunately, newcomers to the series will at first find the game frustrating. Many will expect the gameplay to be similar to that of Gears of War and even try to draw parallels between the games. Obviously, they people do not “get” the game at all.

Actually, I find that many of the newcomers among my peers have been traditionally PC gamers who have made the jump to the consoles fairly recently via Xbox/Xbox 360. The traditional Playstation loyalist (PSOne, PS2, PS3) may find RE5’s controls more forgiving than most. However, if gamers try to experience RE5 for what it truly is instead of a cookie cutter experience, then I am sure they will find it extremely satisfying.

fucking hell is nothing sacred in here?? I think it creates “horrifying atmosphere” with harder controls… not through ACTUAL atmosphere…

its more about getting used to the controls… when you run the “zombies” run… when you stand there… they calmly walk towards you… they are in no hurry to kill you…

Id rather play a game with actual atmospheric tension like Dead Space than a game that creates artificial tension…

  3. kevo:

i like the demo and especially the multiplayer mode makes it really cool…the reason they take their sweet ole time is because their are so many of them and harder to kill like the dude with the chainsaw…u have to put him in a weak state to attack him while the pussy zombies are leaching towards you.. the game focus on more of a shooting role than a survival mode. But i wish you could shoot off their limbs like in the older games but you can do some things like stomping their heads in on the ground…but overall i hope this game sells well because when you get used to the controls it isint as bad as u might think

the controls are a royal pain in the ass.
they couldent of made it harder to knife an enemy.
i was playing the demo yesterday had no green herbs left, was one hit away from dying thanks to the big guy with that sythe thingy there was only one zombie left and him so i walked upto the zombie got my knife out by the time i did that he hit me a few times and i died.
your players reactions are so fricken slow it makes my grandmar look like flash.
you either walk up to them then get your knife ready and get hit 2 or 3 times before you can hit them or sit in one spot for 2 minutes waiting for them to come to you how suspencefull.

  5. yamumsawersome:

and that crap capcom is going on about you cant move and shoot because it would break the suspence.
thats the bigest load of crap ive ever herd.
dead space let you do exactly that it was quite scary.
bioshock did that and it almost got GOTY.
FEAR did that and got PC gamer GOTY.
and DOOM 3 THE BEST SCARIEST GAME EVER IN EXSISTANCE DOES EXACTLY THAT.
capcom its 2009 get with the times,
as i said on another page i have not played a game wich made you hold down a button to aim since the ps1 days.

you hardly have to be a game noob to recognize gaming evolution. Played all the re series minus the online one (outbreak I think). Think I put in the long haul. Completely agree with dwh!

  7. Royzy:

Haha! I love how comment discussions here end up being a post, ripping into us.

I would not want run and gun, but if they had to add any movement to shooting, stepping backwards slowly would be nice.

I liked the controls from Resi 4, so something must of changed slightly, because they are slightly more awkward I’m sure. Maybe it has just been a while.

  8. Barnabe Jones:

I’m a veteran of the series and it took me a few tries to get a grip on the control scheme. But one I got it down, it’s really not that bad at all. It’s actually very similar to RE4, but there are some extra co-op functions layered in. I think this game is going to be great.

I think RE is still king of survival horror. Left 4 Dead wasn’t very good at all. I only played the demo of Dead Space, but I wasn’t overly impressed with it.

  9. CarlB:

You thought Left 4 Dead was bad Barnabe?

  10. Rimmer:

I am not too fussed about having to stand still and shoot, as it is reasonably realistic. You couldn’t hit a barn door if you tried to run and shoot at the same time. What really annoys me is that you also have to stand still with your melee weapons such as the knife. This is just plain stupid, especially when the zombies come swinging at you with weapons that have a longer reach! You also often feel like as if you are stuck in treacle when moving, or even just turning. Personally I thought it was more annoying instead of “frighting”.

  11. Barnabe Jones:

No. Not necessarily. It was a good co-op FPS experience. Ultimate I felt it wasn’t very good as a survival horror game. The tension and “oh shit” moments were few and far between.

  12. CarlB:

    Rimmer,

I’m thinking you could hit a horde of slowly moving zombies while running, though I haven’t tried it.

  13. phranctoast:

Whats this about running anyway. How about a slow walk that affects your accuracy? Id be completely OK with that……

  14. CarlB:

    or walking.

  15. Arvis:

    Phranctoast,

You think Gamer.Blorge should hire the two of us to write for them? I think they owe us some residuals…

  16. CarlB:

    Arvis,

You should click on the “submit a story” link above.

  17. phranctoast:

it is pretty comical that a topic that has nothing to do with re5 controls turned into that discussion and now there are two stories.. Hell yeah. Show me the money. ;)

  18. darkwhitehair:

damn you arvis… Id love a 360 for the new year dave *hint* *hint*…

just start a blawg… best way to get hired to write about video games on websites…

also if anyone is getting residuals its me… no one has as much class in this hell hole than I…

    good day to you sirs…

    bewbs…

  19. harry sachz:

I found Left 4 Dead completely wiped the floor with RE5 demo. It’s an absolute blast, it’s fast, and you just don’t know what is coming next, regardless of whether you’ve played the level before. RE5 was like you were walking through molasses. Sure it’s pretty, but I prefer a good game over good graphics.

  20. CAD:

    The Controls still suck

  21. CAD:

Yes Harry Left 4 Dead is much better then RE5. Zombie Game of the year goes to L4d.

  22. Arvis:

    DWH,

Yeah, you and “class” go together like oil and water… =D

    -Arvis

  23. Barnabe Jones:

I think what I’m trying to say is that Left4Dead felt like a different kind of game. Not bad… I enjoyed what I had an opportunity to play. I think because I have played through all of the previous RE games, I use RE as a litmus test to judge other survival horror games.

CAD – Left 4 dead was released last year.

  24. darkwhitehair:

also kudos on the ads… though misplaced… I suspect this place is filled with very lonely and opinionated but very lonely guys…

    not many girl gamers here…

  25. xboxoz360:

Unforunately this has been something that has happened more so since the online explosion of 2005, specifically when MS’s Xbox 360’s XboxLIVE really took off like a supersonic passenger plane.

Lik ethe writer stated, many newer and younger gamers find anything that requires a moments thought, some patience and time investment – a complete ‘waste of space” and not worth the effort. So great games of old see the dusty bargain bin before their time now than ever before.

I hate the term, but “in the past”, gamers could see a reasonibly decent time on a shelf or on our own shelves at home and get played over and over again.

These days that’s almost a novelty actually. Anyone stating they are still playing a game 2 weeks after its release is considered an idiot and why are they wasting their time. Mainly from the newer-gamer and the younger gamer.

Games such as Resi and even Splinter Cell, Thief etc whill all fail sales wise due to the huge demand for instant gratification and big guns and lots of run-n-gun action.

There is a following for them, a huge one, but not to the numbers that sustain the game financially as they once did.

It’s a shame, as many older, and many newer games simply will not see their best come out. We have a Forza 3 page requesting cars and tracks for the game. The number that want customization like in burnout, and no dmage, and neon lights not to mention every consevible car known to man is astounding. Yetthe real racers are in the minority.

Many newer gamers won’t put the time and effort into a game that requires some thought, even Grid, a great racer has never really been played out to its completion by many, nor has Far Cry 2, etc etc.

It’s a crying shame, as those new-gamers are doing themselves a huge disservice by not being involved deeply with the games.

Sorry for the wabbling, but it’s a huge sore point with me atm.
