Xbox 360 RRoD returns – issue getting out of hand?
Just when we thought that the dreaded ‘Red Ring of Death’ (RRoD) issue was resolved, it rears its ugly head back with a vengeance. Microsoft recently released a mandatory update, which is causing many of the consoles to RRoD. With all of the launch consoles out of warranty, will the new update cause problems for many Xbox 360 owners?
After updating my Xbox 360, I experienced some issues with my console. My console successfully updated but when I went into the XBL Marketplace to download a demo, my system suddenly froze. After rebooting the console, it froze again during the boot-up sequence. I started sweating bullets as flashbacks of last Christmas started dancing around my head.
However, my console came back after I unplugged the power source and let it cool down for a bit. I jumped onto the official Xbox forums to see if anyone else had similar issues and to my surprise, other owners were getting the dreaded RRoD. Unfortunately, it seems that the update is bricking many of the consoles out there.
Many owners are receiving the error code E-74, which usually relates to video cable issues. However, many are reporting that their Xbox 360s RRoD after rebooting. This sounds similar to what happened on the PS3 a while back where consoles were freezing after a firmware update. Luckily, Sony was able to rectify the freezing issue with another firmware update.
Microsoft really needs to step it up and rectify this RRoD issue once and for all. The issue has drained the company billions of dollars just in warranties. Not only is it causing the company a headache, it is wasting the consumers time and money as well. With many of the launch consoles out of warranty, this issue could potentially become volatile.
Hopefully, Microsoft is able to un-brick the Xbox 360s experiencing the RRoD issue after the update. The RRoD issue has left a bad taste for many of the Xbox 360 owners out there. It is one of those events that many probably want to sweep under the rug and forget about. However, with constant reminders, it is getting difficult to forget about it. May be it wasn’t such a good idea to lay off 30 percent of the video game testers?

That’s one thing that Sony has to sort out on the PS3…to stop making updates mandatory to go online and access the store….that’s really annoying.

Also, regarding clan name…just keep throwing stuff at us.
It should be something with dirty undertone and misleading connotations. Yet still passable / legal.
All the last clan names I had were Jew related, because my friends think I’m a Jew (long story).

after selling millions of consoles there are going to some failures that’s the rule for any comsumer product I purchased a 200 disc cd player from Sony and just after the warranty was up It fails to work it’s now a “brick” and also purchased a 52″ XBR4 LCD TV that cost almost 5k at the time I got it and it failed after a week and had to be replaced, so products will fail if not now they will later its a chance we take when spend our money.
February 7th, 2009
Did this update a couple of days ago.
No issues here.
February 7th, 2009
Nah she ain’t the only chick. lol. Anyways, I haven’t had any issues so far…but seriously MS really needs to fix this stupid rrod issue…even the elite still gets them, trust me I have an elite and I’ve gotten the rrod before. Their hardware is really not that good.

Actually, Hockum, you said that the newest chipset was RRoD-free, that it fixed the problem. So… you obviously lied about that, so why should anyone here believe you about this?
Unless, of course… perhaps… you just don’t know what the heck you’re talking about and you make things up in order to make the 360 NOT look like the train wreck that it is (albeit, a train wreck with some great games)??
Honestly, my theory is that you’re actually Aaron Greenburg himself, patrolling internet sites in Damage Control mode.

nicely put Arvis
i hate fanboyism, as many of my friends are 360 fanboys always bagging on me owning a ps3
yes the RRoD was thought to be long gone as the 360 released the new 60gig model but guess its back i sort of feel sorry for 360 owners having to deal with this problem
then again no console is perfect as the ps3 has problems to just not as bad as the RRoD
call me a fanboy or not just speaking my mind
February 8th, 2009
i wonder if M$ has the balls to admit up to this one and fix all the broken consoles like sony did.
February 8th, 2009
I went through 4 ps2’s back in the day (and had to pay for a new one every time), but would have never have dreamt of buying an xbox instead.
It’s funny how things change. I think only an xbox owner can understand this but it’s such a step down owning a ps3, especially when it comes to online gaming which is 70% of my time.
February 9th, 2009
Glad I have a PS3
-No worries of RROD
-No disc scratching
-I don’t have to pretend I like Halo Wars.
-And I get KillZone 2.

Jeez are you that desperate to paint anything ‘XBox’ in a bad light?
It ought to be pretty clear (to even the most idiotic dolt) that the RROD being described here is because of a software issue affecting some machines.
That is nothing to do with the revious hardware based RROD issues (which the later hardware fixed).
I know some of you PS3 fanboys are a little on the dim side but even that ought to have been simple enough for you to get you pointy head around without breaking a brain-sweat.
Tough luck that you obviously don’t like to see/hear it but my XBox is up-to-date with it’s on-line updates (so I must have done this one) and mine is, just like I said, completely problem-free.
Fail.
Better luck next time kiddo.

“The RRoD issue has left a bad taste for many of the Xbox 360 owners out there”
Thats what they get for having Microsoft’s cock in their mouths…
It what they deserve for letting a company rape them on proprietary addons, for paying to get online and for letting a company get away with releasing a system with a 33% failure rate, which i have said ALL ALONG STILL EXISTS
Enjoy your RROD systems, and MS cock in yer ass

Why not just come out….. instead of revealing all your gay sex fantasies here?
Do you think you’re fooling anyone with your obsession/projection?
February 10th, 2009
…..and where is the balanced and fair reporting here, huh?
It’s clear this is a software glitch, it’s not the well know and purely hardware related XBox 360 RROD at all, so why imply that it is and that that sort of RROD has returned?
I wonder how come none of the fanboy element mentioned the PS3 firmware updates that could brick some of those consoles, hmmmmmmmm?
2.01 & 2.40 wasn’t it?
Of course, some would have us believe that only Microsoft and the XBox 360 ever had that sort of problem, eh?
Yeah right.
February 10th, 2009
marie – don’t let this upset you. it’s no coincidence this is the only site “reporting” RROD issues with the new chipset.
the reason is very easily understood. this site if full of flaming fanboys who literally worship every single lie the “authors” put up.
it’s funny if you step back and watch the sub 80’s IQs of the fanbase here. they’re mostly ps3 zealouts (kids, teens) who think sony actually cares about them. lying to them is easier than the truth so that’s what they do. lie…. a LOT.
the posters here are pretty silly too. none of the ps3 fanboys here have even played the 360 yet feel qualified to offer opinions… silly, i know.
it’s okay..this site is in business to make money. they do that by site hits. they generate site hits by publishing lies in order to get gamers frustrated enough to post…thus increasing their site hits.
keep reading other articles…it’s easy to see Arvis, DWH, Bourne, PHRANCTOAST, have zero knowledge of the industry, lines of business, or even how success is gauged.
if it didn’t make gamers looks so ignorant it would be kind of funny…. but alas..
oh well…. think of gamer.blorge as the National Inquirer of gaming….. it really clears it up if you do that….
the ps3 is getting spanked so badly, these guys actually are angry by it ….friggin hilarious…
in fact; they even went so far as to call me a child molester…and why? becuase their toy isn’t selling as well at the other toys and they throw tantrums….
it’s no suprise the ps3 is getting killed…noone wants to game with people like this.
thus endeth my weekly post…
flaming starts in three…..two…one… que the ignorant ps3 fanboys…

This is the new software update that reads when you created a Live account and bricks the console approximately three years afterwards.
February 10th, 2009
Hockum,
“It ought to be pretty clear (to even the most idiotic dolt) that the RROD being described here is because of a software issue affecting some machines.”
*facepalm*
For someone who apparently loves the 360, you don’t seem to understand much about it. If it’s a software glitch, you wouldn’t get the RRoD. You only get the RRoD when the motherboard overheats, warps, and pieces fall off, thereby rendering it useless. Unless this is what has happened to the console, Microsoft WILL NOT honor the three year warranty.
So are you going to tell me that this new batch of RRoDs are not under warranty now?
-Arvis
February 10th, 2009
Throughout gaming’s history there has never been a console on the market with this many serious issues before. The 360 is the Yugo (worst care ever built) of the game industry.
The fact that the 360 was made by one of the world’s largest corporations is very distressing. These aren’t being designed and constructed by some guy in his garage. After three years on the market, it’s disgusting that they still can not get it right.
February 10th, 2009
Arvis, try and stop and think for a moment before continuing to make a fool of yourself.
“For someone who apparently loves the 360″ Jeez, what a give-away.
Projecting again, much, huh?
You’re alright, you go ahead and, er, “love” your CE products all you like.
LMAO
The RROD’ing being reported here in this story specifically is noted to follow a software update.
Perhaps you missed that?
Therefore it is safe to say that it most certainly is software related.
It can happen – as the PS3 experience shows clearly.
You’ll also note that not one word of this story relates to any specific version of XBox 360, which only goes to expose your instant leap to gleefully slam the reliability of the Jasper (or Falcon) XBox for the fanboyism it so obviously is.
*facepalm* yourself.
(and btw, if you’re so dumb that you have no clue how to get a pre-Jasper to RROD then you really ought not be allowed out of the playpen.
Jaspers actually no longer have the 3 red ring signal, so in the most strict sense of things the old RROD is a thing of the past……but perhaps you not having an XBox 360 and all “don’t seem to understand much about it” or know quite as much about it as you want people to imagine, eh?
Massive fail.
Again.
Better luck next time.
February 10th, 2009
“Jaspers actually no longer have the 3 red ring signal, so in the most strict sense of things the old RROD is a thing of the past”
So that’s how MS gets away with not honoring the hardware failure when it happens to the jasper version.
February 11th, 2009
it’s even more important to remember both Mike and Dave have been caught in various lies about consoles and games in the past.
really, don’t take anything they write as fact. this is why they’re cowering behind a “blog” site.
barnabe – sony was sued for producing crappy ps2. they still retain the title “king of defective consoles”. sorry.
February 11th, 2009
Microsoft was also Sued in multiple instances (More than one Class action lawsuit) for Faulty hardware.
RROD and the Disc Scratching.
MS takes back the esteemed honor of being the “King of defective consoles”. sorry.
February 13th, 2009
phranc – please post the settlement MS issued in their classaction.
hint: there is none. they weren’t successfully sued like sony…
then again, sony denied ever having a problem with the ps2, while ms took the more honorable route and recognized the problem and fixed it on THEIR dime…. unlike sony….

@ Happyhockum:
or may be thats what i ment by my previous post.
