Killzone 2 dev cut from same cloth as Gears of War

February 8, 2009

Killzone 2 dev cut from same cloth as Gears of War Gears of War has been praised for its graphical powers throughout the industry for some time now. However, there is a new kid on the block called Killzone 2, which blows away anything seen on the consoles to date. It may not come as a surprise, but the lead developer of Killzone 2 is cut from the very same cloth as the lead designer of Gears of War.

As many of you may already know, the lead designer for the Gears of War series is none other than Cliff Bleszinski. However, another name that might become a geek-household name is Arjan Brussee, the development director for Killzone 2.

Unbeknownst to most, Arjan Brussee worked together with Cliff Bleszinski back in 1994 on a little title called Jazz Jackrabbit for the PC. Those were the good old days when games were executed from the DOS prompt like Doom. The awesome title turned many heads back in day when collecting shareware discs with 2000 games on them were popular.

The two played similar roles back then as they do now, with Arjan Brussee as the lead developer and Bleszinski as the lead designer. The game was created under the roof of Epic Games (Epic Megagames). It really is interesting to see that Epic Games has been a place to foster and generate talented individuals who are able to push next gen systems to the limits.

In an interview with Ars Technica, Bleszinski indicated that he was extremely impressed with Killzone 2. He also said “It’s like, I’m … Professor X, and he’s [Brussee] Magneto.”  Ironically, Bleszinski is also working on the best looking Xbox 360 game to date, while Brussee is working on the best looking PS3 game to date. It is nice to see that there is still some friendly competition going on in the industry. Most likely, we can expect great things from both Bleszinski and Brussee in the near future and rely on them to continue pushing the bar even further.

    GAMER BLORGE!! ASSEMBLE!!!!

  3. Royzy:

I always find it quite interesting how close industry people are.

My lecturer said that the animation (and gaming probably even more so) industry is very incestuous, and that it is likely people within my course group will be working with (or for) each other at some point.

  4. darkwhitehair:

just look at Dave… he has a secret evil twin (who is funnier than him)… living in the same city… and he doesnt even know about it…

  5. lock_down:

He said of KZ2 “I thought it looked hot!”, which is an interesting way of putting it.

  6. darkwhitehair:

he gets a warm feeling in his pants when he sees Killzone in “action”

what about you lock down??? got anything interesting to say?? roy is being a bitch and wont be a partner in my innernet scam… what about you???

  7. CON:

Not exactly cut from the same cloth when it comes to development timetables LOL

  8. johnw:

    shouldn’t the title be
“Gears of War dev cut from same cloth as Killzone 2″ because killzone was first?
you make it sound like killzone’s dev copyed the gears guys.
yet another idiot trying to get people to visit there site by bashing KZ2

  9. Ivan_PSP:

Killzone 2 will blow Gears of War in everything the game is basically flawless the graphics are mind blowing amazing. Cliff is just trying to look tough before he gets vanish from the gaming world.

    johnw…

    he succeeded… dumbass…

Con – the reason Gears was thrown together so quickly, was because of the use of the prefabricated Unreal engine. Non-talented designers (Cliffy) use prefab engines as a crutch. KZ2 was built from the ground up, which took a lot more work and skill. And paid off in the end.

I don’t know Mike. Although I have yet to try this game these three videos above pale in comparison to the hype you give this game. It looks good but exactly what does it blow away that we’ve seen on a console to date? Because in those 3 videos I see things being done in Gears and Halo that Killzone is not doing. Besides being a shooter with good graphics exactly what makes it blow the compitition away? You should have said “”there is a new kid on the block called Killzone 2, which blows away anything seen on the PS3 to date”".

  13. CON:

“the reason Gears was thrown together so quickly”

Barnabe that is the most ignorant statement i’ve ever had from a fanboy LOL I suppose you’re gonna say the same about COD4 and 5…..

Gears has proven it’s self in the reviews and sales so enough of your fanboy nonsense, I’ve heard it all before with MGS4 and LBP which Gears 2 easily outsold in the space of a month

  14. Barnabe Jones:

Actually COD has become an annual thing now. This year we will see COD: Modern Warfare II. Activision is sticking with what works instead of trying something new.

Obviously they are saving a small fortune reusing the same engine, but imagine if they were to build the next COD from the ground up. The all around improvements would be amazing and would really help to push the series farther.

  15. CON:

No call of duty is made every 2 years barnie. Infinity ward didn’t make the last one. Killzone won’t outsell halo, gears or cod

  16. Royzy:

Barnabe / COD, dress up your Gravatars, you are making the place look untidy.

  17. darkwhitehair:

CON youre a fucking dumbass… cod has become another madden… World at War wass worthless… no reason to make it… IW shouldve just released another map pack and Treyarch shouldve stuck to the bond game…

    fuckikng riddiculus…

  18. CON:

DARK no reason to make it???

World at War has outsold the majority of all ps3 titles on 360. It’s called business. Think it’s you who’s the dumbass.

  19. Barnabe Jones:

Roy, My employer uses Web Sense to block me from all things interesting and fun online. I’ll have to update myself at some point during the week while I’m at home. I already have some ideas brewing.

Con – In regards to KillZone 2’s sales, perhaps they won’t surpass Gears or Halo, but as of two weeks ago the Euporpean preorder sales alone topped 1.1Million. I think that answers the question if the game will be a hit/killer apt.

  20. kev:

the ps3/Killzone 2 bundle just dropped out of Amazon’s top 10. A “system seller” woudn’t drop out so fast, i would think.

besides it’s hard for anyone (MS INCLUDED) to come up with a “system seller” at that price point.

besides, everyone knows (as ps3 fanboys like to claim), the 360 is the home of the first person shooter genre. i hate playing fps on the ps3’s controller. firing a weapon without a trigger and no rumble feature in the early $600 models? no thanks.

it looks nice tho; it’s just a shame the early reviews are stating only that…very little nice to say about the actual gameplay tho.

  21. kev:

really? cut fromt the same clothe? that’s like saying, hey, the janitor at epic worked in the same building so he’s the same clothe as cliffy b.

until Arjan Brussee earns the respect and awards from the gaming community, your article is a transparent attempt to generate hype for killzone 2.

thankfully most knowledgeable gamers (read; not ps3 fanboys) can see through it.

  22. kev:

    “cloth” not “clothe”…sorry
