Will the Final Fantasy VII PS3 remake ever become a reality?
Final Fantasy VII on the PS3? Yes please. But will this long-awaited and oft-rumored remake ever actually become a reality? God, I hope so.
Final Fantasy VII is a true classic amongst video games. The first Final Fantasy title on Playstation, it was also the first to be rendered in proper 3D. More importantly, it had a storyline that involved and engrossed the player incredibly well. Which proved a revelation for gamers used to feeling little for the characters and disregarding story lines almost altogether.
Final Fantasy VII is now 12 years old, and while I could still happily play through it today, things have moved on rather considerably in the space of time.
Most noticeable, of course, is graphics. At the time, FFVII was cutting edge, with 3D characters moving around on pre-rendered backgrounds. I remember thinking how gorgeous it all was. Playing the game now makes you realize how far we’ve come. Cloud Strife looks like a pixelated blob, especially on the big HDTVs most of us now have.
Which is why the idea of a Final Fantasy VII remake for a new generation of consoles is such an appealing one. It’s been rumored ever since Square showed off the power of the Playstation 3 by producing a technical demonstration using the intro to Final Fantasy VII. But that was two years ago and nothing has yet been announced.
But that video has lived on, and spawned the idea for a full remake of the game. Fans are eager for it, and have even produced extensive petitions with thousands of names on in order to prove to Square Enix that there is a demand out there.
Final Fantasy Union is claiming that the remake of VII is now a case of when rather than if. I’m personally not so sure, but I’m hoping to damn that this is genuinely the case. The original shifted consoles like there was no tomorrow, and I have a feeling that a remake could do the same, if it ever does actually happen.
The thing is, Final Fantasy VII on the PS3 would take at least two years to make, and probably longer given the development time of Final Fantasy XIII. If Square was really going to do it then wouldn’t it have already been announced? If the Japanese release of XIII comes and goes without even a mention of a VII remake then we might as we forget it and move on.
Which would be a shame because I’d pay big money for a PS3 version of Final Fantasy VII and I doubt I’m alone. Could Square Enix really be about to ignore a potential goldmine?

Id get it if it had trophies and was on the PSN or something… but isnt this on the PS1?? sO you can just BC it…

I don’t think it should happen.
The collective cream of millions of fanboys flooding the streets is something I don’t want to wake up to.

I’d get it for sure. I was there on the door when VIII came out, but I was years late getting around to VII and never really got a chance to get into it.
So, yes please. Though I want them to get XIII out first. If VII came out on PS4 or something, that is fine.
I wonder how trophies will affect XIII. I love trophies, but I wonder if it will be a distraction from the content of the game itself. I like to be immersed in my Final Fantasy.

VII was the first RPG I got into. Loved the series ever since.

Square Enix hate the PS3 don’t they.
February 9th, 2009
If they do, it isn’t as much as Valve does.

There’s really no reason why Square wouldn’t. The game would infinitely better than some of there latest mediocre games they have put out. Also this would sell PS3’s like hotcakes – without a price drop.
At the very least, they should put the original up on PSN for download. Have you ever checked online to try to find a copy of the original PS1 game? It’s disgusting how much people are selling the game for.

The game would SELL…

Sony should publish this.

I really want to play on my console right now. I think I’ll have a break from this coursework in a bit.
I got the Airbraker trophy on Wipeout HD last week. I couldn’t believe it is only a silver. I was gutted. I need bigger ammo than silvers to keep Bourne and Barnabe at bay.
February 9th, 2009
Roy – Last I checked you had already destroyed Bourne and I. I’ve been trying to hold off until KZ2, but I might breakdown and get something new this weekend. I had to give up on Wipeout for a bit… it’s not good for my blood pressure.

Never mind putting the original FF VII up on PSN, just any general classic game from the PS1 era will do. It’s crazy that there are so little PS1 titles on the store. It makes no sense at all.
What’s the chances of possible remake going multi-plat though? It did come out on Windows as well, even though the PS1 version was published by Sony….MS would surely want some of the action either for 360 or Windows.

like your name states, Sony needs to lock that shit down. Pay for it to be created if need be.
February 9th, 2009
ohhh yeah… Dead Rising 2 on the PS3 and PC… also the 360…. FUCK YEAH!!!
February 9th, 2009
MS will probably pay to have exclusive dlc on it.
February 9th, 2009
Haha true, phranc, plus probably trying to make it a timed 360 exclusive as well.
Well, whatever, Dead Rising 2 can wait.
Back to FF VII though, it’ll be interesting to see who owns what rights or what deals were agreed between Square, Sony and Eidos.
I don’t think Sony own any rights in the same way that MS own the Halo rights, even though Bungie developed it and are now free from MS.
If Sony doesn’t own anything, then MS could pay to have it exclusive on 360. *THAT* would make me get a 360.
February 9th, 2009
I think they should wait until PS4 comes out.
Then they can make Final Fantasy VIII and IX too.
And you’ll see some *real* Graphics when Tessellation and displacement mapping is finally out.
February 9th, 2009
Square has already re-made 1-6 for the DS & GB Advance. Remaking VII – IX is actually a really good idea. If they remade the three games using the same engine, it would be a quick effective way to sell bajillions of games.
I would bet Square solely own the rights to VII. FF XIII VS is still a worldwide PS3 exclusive, so I think there’s a good change a remake of VII would stay exclusive to the PS3.

Quite frankly lock down.. with the popularity being shown around the world for this game, I’m really surprised that MS didn’t offer Square the money to make this game exclusive to their console. The hype meter is what caused Bioshock to be a timed exclusive.

geez…does anyone even care about FF anymore, outside of the teenage, anime-freaks?
it’s tired. let it go.
February 11th, 2009
Kev,
I still care about Final Fantasy and I’m not teenage or an anime-freak. Do I still have to “let it go?”

Wow a game that isn’t a FPS featuring a faceless space marine, shouting curse word at his friends? Parish the thought.
I have a feeling FFXXXIII may sell better on PS3. *smiles*

I was a bit over zealous with the “Xâ€â€¦ of course I meant FF XIII…

Final Fantasy VII is a potential remake. Note that I said is. I’m sure everyone knows how much Square has turned mostly into a business by demographics and popularity settings, by using experimental ideas in other games without the FF name, and later applying such ideas into FF games.
Square simply does not have the time to make FF VII for the PS3. That doesn’t mean they don’t want to, or aren’t thinking about it. It’s a kick to the nut sack to show that trailer and to never see the reality of a legend reborn.
From the information I’ve gathered from the interwebz, facts and rumors alike; Square will make a FFVII remake IF they truly see a profitable edge. After the release of FF XIII and FF XIV, the game developers from both parties (those that had to do with the development of FF VII) will be able to actually do something; but as fans, we must be considerate! We must realize how much of a pain in the ass it truly must be to code two games at the same time with pressure from the company and within the development team. We must realize that those programmers, designers, and game testers must be insanely motivated to work for a company like Square. Their workload is insane, not to mention they have personal lives to attend to.
Throw them a freak’n bone people! Your FF VII will come, for sure, after the creation of FF XIV, if you really want it to. Square’s employees love you!
