Evidence Crysis is coming to the PS3 as an exclusive?

February 11, 2009

Evidence Crysis could come to the PS3 as an exclusive? One of the longest surviving rumors on the Web is about Crysis landing on the home consoles. Crytek already revealed that a working engine has been developed for next gen consoles. However, despite the continuous denials from the studio, hints have been leaking out of the studio indicating otherwise.

The acquisition of Free Radical Design by Crytek could be the strongest evidence that the game could make the jump to the consoles soon. The studio dedicated several years to crafting Crysis, which is said to be the best looking game to date. It is not unfathomable that the company would want to milk the game for all its worth.

While other studios such as Bethesda Software and EPIC Games have shifted their main focus from the PC to the home consoles, Crytek has remained PC only. However, last year at GDC, the company expressed interest in making the jump to the home consoles.

Bringing one of its most acclaimed titles to the consoles such as Crysis, is the safest bet to selling a few million units easily. According to Ars Technica, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli indicated that buying up Free Radical Design would be the quickest way to make the jump onto next gen consoles. However, one interesting point about Free Radical Design is that the company only has experience developing on the PS3.

This raises an interesting question as to whether or not if there was any grain of truth in the rumors section of the PSM/OPM last year. PSM previously indicated that Crysis would land on the PS3 as an exclusive title. However, I wouldn’t be too surprised if this was true at one point. However, project scopes change all the time depending on external and internal factors.

It could also be that because the PS3 is so frustratingly difficult to develop for, Crytek needed to buy up a whole studio to support that effort. I’m sure that sounds a bit more feasible than any console exclusive nonsense. Hopefully, 2009 will be the year Crytek finally cracks open its shell and divulges some juicy information. Until then, make sure to keep a sharp eye out for more information.

I’d snap it up if it did come to PS3. Though graphically I can imagine it will suffer (ah well).

  2. kevo:

ps3 could support more than you may think…

  3. Zoar:

    I’m sorry, but no.

There was a YouTube video about this saying Crysis 2 will be on the *next* consoles in 2012.

They just don’t have enough RAM for it to work on the PS3 and 360.

  4. darkwhitehair:

nope… the only thing going for Crysis is its graphics… otherwise its just another shooter… Im guessing they are going to use Free Radical to bring in a new IP… or timesplitters 4…

NO HAZE!!! leave that in the gutter… ps3 have already struck lightning with K2… it cant do it with Haze 2..

  5. Bourne:

Actually i think that DWH cracked it. The graphics look the best ever (no -one can argue) but it does just seem like another shooter. Having said that i’d buy it.

  6. lock_down:

We need some sort of usb RAM key that you plug in to the usb port and then it gives more RAM.

  7. Royzy:

Actually sod Crysis, Timesplitters 4 is what I’m gagging for.

I wonder if Nick Carver has returned with FRD to work for Crytek. I could ask him actually…

Again, the PS3 is NOT “frustratingly difficult to develop for” as the author of this blog assumes.

The opinions stated in this article by Author Mike Ferro regarding the development of PS3 software are completely false and have no credibility or merit.

  9. superdynamite:

Too bad he had to ruin a cool article with fanboy statements.

    Better luck next time

  10. Arvis:

    Superdynamite,

Mr. Ferro is only echoing the sentiments of a few game developers who have had trouble with the PS3 architecture. Repeat: video game developers. Mind telling us what game you’re working on?

Enjoy this moment. Its a rare moment.

Blorge being accused of being biased against the PS3. *sniffle*

  12. darkwhitehair:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  13. ncaissie:

    I would buy this game.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

From what I gather… Only a small fraction of PC users even had the capabilities to run this game at its full potential. I don’t see the problem of having to scale the game back a bit for the PS3. I’m sure if it was ported, it would probably still look amazing.

  15. kev:

with the decline of the ps3 sales year over year, it wouldn’t make sense for them to bring the game to the ps3… unless they can do it for very, very low overhead….

    i wouldn’t count on it….

besides..all the ps3 fanboys say they have the best “exclusives” on the ps3…why would they want sloppy seconds?

  16. phranctoast:

My guess is it involves the sequel to Crysis.
