Gears of War coming to PS3? – Probably not, but it should
Alongside the Halo franchise, Gears of War and Gears of War 2 are the games most closely associated with the Xbox brand. But that would clearly change if the franchise was to go multi-format in the future. Comments from the series writer suggests it is at least possible. And if not, why not?
I’m a big advocate for there being one universal console developed as a collaborative effort and supported by every video game developer and publisher. It’s OK, I know I’m in the minority, and I also know it’s unlikely to ever happen. So instead, I have to make do with multi-format releases.
Platform exclusives clearly do some good in terms of forcing consumers hands, making them choose one console over another. But that situation is not doing gamers any good, especially in the pocket. And there are certainly signs that platform exclusives are becoming fewer and farther between. Only first-person developers really stick to the formula these days.
At the recent New York Comic Con, Joshua Ortega, the writer of Gears of War 2, gave a press conference. During a question and answer session, Ortega was asked about the direction the series will head, and how long he imagines it will last. According to TGR, he replied:
You will not be disappointed in the next ten years. It’s a ten-year plan. Gears is long-term. The lancer is the new lightsaber.
This is clearly good new for Xbox fans, who are now almost guaranteed at least three more Gears of War games and possibly more. It’s likely there’ll be one more on the 360 before the series jumps to the next-gen Microsoft console. But could that ten-year strategy mean more than just new Xbox games?
There is speculation that this could mean the series will go multi-platform in the future. After all, where have we heard talk of a “ten-year plan” before? Sony when talking about the PS3 of course.
Epic could make a ton of money simply by switching to being a multi-format developer than being Microsoft’s lapdog. Gears of War is a game that has universal appeal and could sit comfortably on any console powerful enough to support it.
But, I cannot actually see this happening. Gears of War is just too damn important to Microsoft for it to let the series go to its biggest rival. Which is a shame because the game would surely sell exceptionally well on the PS3. Gears of War is one of those games that PS3 owners wish was on their console, whether they’ll admit it or not.

I guess it all depends on how technically similar the next Xbox and the next PS are to each other. Game development costs are only going up. Financially this move would make the most sense for Epic.

I have to give credit where it’s due, Gears of war is probably the only 360 franchise which i would actually buy a 360 for. So if it did come to the PS3 i’d probably buy it.

I don’t think the next Xbox and PS are going to be too similar, given that Sony will likely continue to use an upgraded Cell.
Also, did anyone else see that rumour that Intel of all companies are going to make the graphics chip for the PS4? Crazy.
Back to Gears though, MS will never allow it to go multi-plat…they’ll probably pay anything to keep it.
Bu then we’ve got KZ2 and KZ3 (an inevitability apparently) to keep us going.

I know it makes financial sense for all the devs to go multiplat, but I just find it annoying. Can’t anyone have any integrity anymore? Not that accepting Microsoft handouts to keep your game out of Sony’s hands counts as integrity or anything. I just mean… showing SOME kind of loyalty to your fanbase. It doesn’t always have to be about numbers…

The writer really needs to speak for himself when he says “all PS3 owners wish they had Gears.” I honestly can say that I almost completely don’t give a steaming turd about the generic Steroids of War series whatsoever. The game, another generic, testosterone-infused arcade shooter, just doesn’t appeal to me–not in a gameplay sense, not in an aesthetic sense, and not in a narrative sense. I’ve played too many of these kinds of action shooters to know that once I’ve played one, I’ve played them all.
The 360 can keep this one. I’d much rather see Mass Effect or Alan Wake on the PS3, if I had my choice.

Do you guys know that any and all models of the PS3 can in fact play PS2 games?!?!?!? On the store… under add-ons, there is a free file called PS2 system file. The file enables you to load PS2 games on to your PS3. It’s been out since 2006. Am I the only one who wasn’t aware of this?

bourne – it would be a first for a simple patch to upgrade a game to splitscreen. i’ve never seen it done.
dwh – hey, the truth speaks for itself. Geow 2 = beatiful, great gameplay and splitscreen
killzone 2 = beautiful + meh gameplay (from early reviews) and no splitscreen.
splitscreen coops taxes the cpu and the gpu a ton. if the ps3 could do it, killzone would have it. but alas.
since you have nothing of substance to add, go away. all your posts are just flaming…
lockdown – when you have to use 8 different games to add up to “50 million games sold” it’s proof it’s a niche market. particularly when you consider there are wellllll over 200 million hardware (ps1, 2, psp) owners.

GT has always touted itself as the “driving sim”… most gamers would rather play need for speed or other easily played driving games than one that is very difficult..ie; gt games…. sorry.
