Did Xbox 360 lose an exclusive with Dead Rising 2?

February 13, 2009

Did Xbox 360 lose exclusive with Dead Rising 2? One of silliest arguments made this console generation is the loss of exclusive titles. Initially when games like Devil May Cry 4 was announced for the Xbox 360, many fanboys argued that the PS3 was doomed because it was losing exclusives left and right. However, with games like Dead Rising 2 being released on the PS3, many will argue that the Xbox 360 may be doomed.

Arguments over losing console exclusives have always been a practice in futility. The main point of the arguments stem around the demise of the other console because it no longer has exclusive games to support it. I recall having seen plenty of inflammatory remarks when I reported that the PS3 lost Final Fantasy XIII as an exclusive.

However, in recent times it has been the other way around with titles such as Bioshock and Dead Rising 2 making its way on to the PS3.  Does this mean that the Xbox 360 is doomed because it is losing exclusives? Of course that is a silly notion as it is the natural evolution of the industry with development costs skyrocketing, studios are forced to make multiplatform releases.

Gamers across the Internet are making the same old tired arguments which have been made throughout the Web from NeoGAF to Gametrailers before. It really is a bit silly to base a console’s future solely on losing its grasp on exclusive games.

As indicated in my recent story, Microsoft is leading the exclusive DLC frontier. The company is doing what it can to keep the console unique and fresh. The reality is that both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will co-exist probably till the end of this generation. Final words of wisdom every gamer should heed – stop predicting (wishing) the doom of the other console and just enjoy the games.

Agreed, PS3 will has and will continue to do fine during this gen, even if it remains in third place in sales.

Dead Rising is an excellent 360 game, and hopefully PS3 owners will be able to experience similar or better quality with Dead Rising 2’s release almost 3 years after the original.

Maybe DR2 can even help breath some new life into the PS3 to help it catch up in sales.

To me, the PS3 losing exclusives was a strong indication that industry confidence in the brand was slipping. No-one can blame the publishers for wanting to maximise their return on their invested effort.

Sadly for Sony this round, publishers have had to look elsewhere to recoup their investment. PS3 was supposed to continue Sony’s dominance of the market, the opposite happened.

Most multi-platform titles appear on 360 first then follow later on PS3, meaning there is a window of exclusivity when anticipation and demand are at their highest, I doubt M$ are losing sleep over the situation.

It’s a good thing that Sony’s dominance of the market was broken this gen’, strong competition means lower prices and better value for the gaming consumer.

  3. phranctoast:

I saw the time of third party exclusives ending when they started acknowledging how the the “next gen” games were going to cost to make. It makes the most sense for the developers to release on multiple consoles to make up the cost create.

Maybe Chillyfish is right and if Sony had a 7 million lead on the 360 they’d be able to keep some of these exclusives, but I highly doubt it.

Looking forward to dead rising 2. Should be fun. Any word on a Lost Planet Sequel?

  4. darkwhitehair:

was it EVER an exclusive in the same form as Halo??

did Microsoft actually pay for it??? I doubt it… because they devs wanted to create a nex gen experience (same reason their texts were shit on normal TVs)… I think they just didnt bother with a port to the PS3 later on…

    That’s crap. $70-$80 a game is cheap?

    Bull shit.

  6. Barnabe Jones:

Does Capcom have any exclusive franchises this gen? The first Dead Rising came out before the launch of the PS3… it just never got ported. It was quicker and cheaper to port it to the Wii.

There are still a small hand full of exclusive third party games, but they are few and far between. That’s why first party exclusives are so vital. Pretty soon, the only main thing to distinguish a console from its rivals will be its self produced titles.

  7. CarlB:

There are still a small handful of exclusive first party titles gamers really care about, and they will continue to be overwhelmed by quality third party titles. That is why first party exclusives are becoming less vital while at the same time becoming more expensive to make. Pretty soon the only main thing to differentiate a console from it’s rivals outside will be it’s online service, extra/exclusive content, and how it’s games interact with each other (the evolution of achievements/gamerscore). Universal console anybody?

  8. lock_down:

Maybe the PS3 version will get a special edition with Dead Rising 1 also on the disc. Who knows. Also, why on the 360 cover art for Dead Rising 1 does it say “only on Xbox” when it is also in the Wii??

The PlayStation brand isn’t slipping, hardware across all three is still selling. Take the PS2. 8 years old and still selling, and of course its sales are gradually falling, but if you look at Konami and Namco’s financial reports, the PS2 is still where they make the most of their money.

And Activision is making 13% of its revenue from the PS2, topped only by the Wii on 15%. I don’t think those companies would dismiss the brand of PlayStation given those results.

phranc is right, it’s simply got to be returning their increasing investment, probably why EA are looking to devote 50% of their time to the Wii this year given its cheap development.

  9. Juice:

Well Sony still has TONS of exclusive still comin out this year, that they didn’t pay for ” timed releases” for.

There are just lots of devs that Sony has made FAT over the year that are loyal to the brand. Sony has all ways worked hard to give thier consumers quality exclusive games, not quality exclusive DLC .

“The reality is that both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will co-exist probably till the end of this generation.”

And then after that, something will have to have to give…

  11. CarlB:

    lock_down,

It says only on 360 because it has been that way for almost three years.

I was only talking about PS3, not the Playstation brand, though it has slipped when in comparison to Nintendo, especially PSP vs DS (though I still prefer PSP over DS, and Microsoft doesn’t even have a handheld). On the PS2, it will be interesting if it remains on the market beyond next year.

    Juice,

Sony has “tons” of exclusive releases this year that they paid for by buying out entire studios for their “loyalty”.

  12. lock_down:

Yeah but Carl, I’m pretty sure you can’t market a game as “Only on System X” unless you are absolutely 100% sure it won’t go anywhere else i.e you own the rights, have a binding agreement etc, otherwise isn’t it false advertising? You are stating something that isn’t true.

It’s why MGS4 doesn’t have “Only on PlayStation” on the box, because while there is no imminent port ready, Konami could decide to port it to 360 in the future…or maybe even port it to a next gen console in the future.

I’m with you on the PSP over DS thing though. It’s an absolute great piece of hardware. No-one can argue with that. Sony just really need more games it.

I agree the PS brand has slipped, though whether it’s terminal or not is hard to say. Even so, I think Sony should ditch the PlayStation name next gen and go with something new.

It’s worked for Nintendo after all.

  13. lock_down:

I agree the PS brand has slipped….in comparison to Nintendo…is what I meant to add.

I still think the PS brand is relatively strong overall.

  14. CarlB:

    lock_down,

Considering there is yet to be another version, it is not yet false advertising, and I believe the Wii version will be significantly different (different POV, less zombies, content, control, etc.), which is why it is not called Dead Rising, it is called Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. I am pretty sure Microsoft is covered legally here, but maybe you could draw up a suit on them, as crazier things have happened. Sony doesn’t do a lot of things marketing wise that they could, and I believe they could put “only on playstation” on MGS4 if they really wanted to as long as it was exclusive to that system.

The PS3 has slipped in comparison to XBox 360 compared to what was expected from before and during it’s launch. In this nature Sony has slipped in comparison to Microsoft by letting them gain market share with the 360. Fortunately they do have PSP and PS2 to fall back on and can still make a comeback if they desire this gen or with PS4 vs. the next XBox.

I still think the PS brand is strong overall for Sony, just not in comparison with each of it’s product’s direct competition when considering current sales and overall variety in games available. Despite this, the PS brand still has unique and enjoyable gaming experiences to reward those that invest the extra money in it when considering the five or so exclusives that come to mind when thinking of it.

When I see a game that features a mall with loads of NPCs running about… I’m reminded of RockStar’s crappy State of Emergency. Do you remember that game Carl? Bleck!

The first dead rising received great reviews. I’m really looking forward to the sequel.

  16. darkwhitehair:

dont be such a Playstation fanboy carl…

  17. CarlB:

I do remember State of Emergency Barnabe, and Dead Rising is exponentially better.

  18. CarlB:

If I was only into driving sims dwh, we could argue about driving physics or something… I guess I’ll just have to believe you there about Forza as you seem to have enjoyed it thoroughly.
