PSP 2009 lineup is three times bigger: Monster Hunter, Resistance: Retribution

February 15, 2009

PSP 2009 lineup is three times bigger: Monster Hunter, Resistance: Retribution The PSP has been enjoying a successful run, especially in Japan. The handheld just topped the 50 million mark recently. Considering the cost of the PSP, it is doing quite well for itself in the video game market. The system also received a huge boost from the latest iteration of Monster Hunter.

Capcom recently revealed that the game Monster Hunter Portable Unite, reached the three million unit mark in Japan alone. This could very well be the biggest title to hit the PSP. If sales have already reached three million in Japan alone, I am sure that it will quickly double that once it hit overseas. Also, recent figures indicate that PSP sales have been quickly catching up the DSi’s in Japan as well.

The PSP did have a bit of a dry spell near the end of 2008 here in the States. However, the year did start out great with God of War: Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. Some of the games such as Monster Hunter won’t be hitting the US until later this year.

Hopefully things will start to pickup after Resistance: Retribution launches in March. Sony Europe boss, David Reeves indicated that 2009 will be much better than 2008 as far as the PSP game lineup is concerned.

In a recent interview, Reeves stated:

Now I can look you in the face and say, the line-up for PSP in 2009 is two or three times stronger than it was last year. We ran out of steam on games around August, September last year. We didn’t have a Monster Hunter or a Dissidia. But probably from March to July, you’re going to see that type of thing starting to kick in.

It seems that the company might have learned a thing or two about pacing video game releases. Reeves also hints at several unannounced PSP exclusive games to hit the store shelves this year. Until then check out my list of top five PSP RPG games to own.

  1. Barnabe Jones:

I think the PS titles I’m most looking forward to for ‘09 are Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia. I still need to check out Monster Hunter also.

So far my DS has been getting all of my portable game love, while the PSP looks on jealously. I thik that may change soon though.

  2. darkwhitehair:

I would buy a PSP for only 3 games… God of war… Patapon and loco roco… thats all I need… anything else like gta and siphon filter and resistance is just a bonus…

  3. Juice:

I love my PSP! The DS is awesome and all, but it just doesn’t have the types of games that I enjoy. Looking foward to a great year ahead for the little guy. He needs the exercise.

  4. darkwhitehair:

I know I can just spend the rest of my life with a DS and the pokemon games.. so I wont get one till I can get a Wii as well…

  5. Royzy:

Hey Barnabe, how you enjoying Fallout3?

I was put off getting a PSP for a few reasons, mostly personal though (like how often I’d use it). If I already own a film, do I need to buy it on UMD to ‘legally’ watch it on a PSP?

  6. Barnabe Jones:

Roy,I’m loving it. I’m glad I took the plunge. I’ve really enjoyed the few hours I’ve put in so far. What do you think of it?

  7. Arvis:

    Barnabe,

Fallout 3 is my newest guilty pleasure. Too vulgar and too violent… but too addictive as well. Between this and SF4 in a few days, my friends can just say goodbye to me.

Not to mention that I just started dating someone… this has been a crazy week.

    -Arvis

  8. darkwhitehair:

fuck you arvis… dont dangle your wild and crazy life in front of me… WHAT ABOUT ME NEEDS!!! I need to play Street Fighter with someone…

    seriously… buy Left 4 Dead on Steam…

  9. Royzy:

I am enjoying it, though I gotta find more time to play it. I want to get a good run through before Killzone 2. And we have started a new project at uni and I have to get something together to pitch to a client.

I skipped the G.O.A.T. …lost out on a trophy there. DayM!

  10. Barnabe Jones:

Roy – I saw that you missed the GOAT. I’m not even sure how you managed that. Did you play sick? At least you can get the trophy within 5 minutes of starting a new game.

Roy & Arvis – Not sure if you tried the “Those!” quest yet? It starts off you are helping Bryan Wilks find his father?…. yeah the fire ants are insanely hard. I hope I’m not stuck in the Marigold station now.

  11. Royzy:

I told him I didn’t want to do the stupid test, and then he let me see the answers so I could choose what I wanted to be.

Was given the task by the peasant boy, not looked into it yet though. Been doing the ’survival’ guide for a jolly lass.

  12. Arvis:

    Barnabe,

I recommend one of two strategies for those fire ants. Either keep your distance and use VATS with an Assault Rifle or Laser Rifle and aim for the head. The Chinese Assault Rifle got the best results for me.
Or, if possible, get right up on top of them and whack the crap out of them with whatever melee weapon you prefer. If you use this strategy, make sure you stay mobile. These ants are kinda slow and can’t turn very quickly, so it’s easy to stay out from in front of them. This strategy doesn’t work well if there is more than one fire ant attacking you.

And… actually, there is a 3rd strategy that I never used. You can shoot their antennae, which disorients them, and run away. Don’t know how well it will work, though.

    -Arvis

  13. Royzy:

Shooting the antannae confuses them, and they attack anything. So if there are 2 together, they attack each other. That strategy is what I have just used.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

Thanks Arvis. I’m up to the part where you need to kill the Queens five worker ants. I tried to clear out the hive about 4 times before I gave up last night. I don’t have very much ammo, so I think I may need to back track to Megaton. I’ll try to restock the ammo for the Chinese rifle. Hopefully I’ll have some better luck tonight.

  15. Royzy:

I used the Frag Mines from a minefield for the Queen’s guards.

Also, to get a bit of ammo I followed some heavily armoured guys around, letting them kill groups of Raiders. Then I’d run in and scoop up the weapons. If you see similar chaps wandering round, follow them for a bit.

  16. Barnabe Jones:

Both great ideas. I bet a frag grenade or two would help show those ants who’s boss.

  17. Arvis:

    Barnabe,

Actually, Royzy’s advice is right on the money (I was unclear on what exactly shooting the antennae did). But when fighting the queen’s guards, I was able to get a group of three to fight each other (purely by chance), and then just lobbed some hand grenades into the middle of them from a safe distance.
In fact, i think it was a land mine that I used to get them confused in the first place.

In other words: Explosives, if possible.

    -Arvis

  18. Barnabe Jones:

Good Advice. I can’t wait to get home and give those ants hell.

I think shooting them in the antennae is supposed to disorient them, but I don’t think it did very much at all.

  19. CarlB:

Has anyone here played Operation Anchorage yet?

  20. Arvis:

    Carl,

Is that a game? Or a mission in Fallout?

    -Arvis

P.S. Barnabe, keep us updated. :)

  21. CarlB:

Arvis, I’ve read it is only a couple of missions with only about 3 hours gameplay to extend the game for those who are fans of it. Broken Steel and The Pitt are due out soon to follow up.

“Despite its shortcomings, Operation: Anchorage is a must own for Fallout 3 owners. ”

    http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/208742/fallout-3-operation-anchorage/

“The changes in gameplay are refreshing and the challenge level which results from them make it a satisfying experience. It is not painfully difficult, just pleasantly so, and its running time of roughly three hours is long enough to be enjoyable without becoming monotonous. And some of the gear you acquire for having completed it is pretty damn cool too. If you enjoyed Fallout 3, this is a worthwhile investment.”

  22. darkwhitehair:

pfft… even I know about Operation Anchorage… (cus Im awesome)

its the DLC which is exclusive to the 360… according to “Co-op” (the new 1up show like show) its more like a shooter than the typical Fallout 3-like RPG shooter…

apparently its good value for money… but mostly shooter oriented…

  23. Arvis:

“its the DLC which is exclusive to the 360″

That would be why I have paid it no mind.

    -Arvis

  24. Barnabe Jones:

    Arvis,

I took care of the ants. I actually managed to take them out using the Chinese Riffle. It wasn’t that hard at all. I think I was overly tired when I first tried to make my way though. It works out well that Bryan’s Aunt lives in Rivet City; I had to go there any way. Now I can kill two birds with one stone.

Carl – The DLC does sound pretty cool. I think the main game will keep me busy for quite a while though.

  25. CarlB:

Arvis, I’ll take that as a no.
Barnabe, I heard the ending is a bit awkward… and they say it will be resolved in the DLC by April’s release of “The Pitt”.
