Metal Gear Solid 4 goes platinum – so no excuse not to buy it

February 17, 2009

Metal Gear Solid 4 goes platinum - so no excuse not to buy itMetal Gear Solid 4 is one of, if not the, finest video games on the PS3. In fact, many would argue it’s the best game ever made, it did, after all, top our list of the 100 best video games of all time. And it’s now set to be released as part of the budget Platinum range, meaning there really is no excuse not to buy it.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots, or MGS4 to those too lazy to write the full title, is a game that splits opinion. In that sense, it’s no different from any of the previous games in the series, all of which have gained lovers and haters in seemingly equal numbers.

The fourth and final iteration of the series to follow Solid Snake was released on June 12, 2008. Fans of the series immediately fell in love with Hideo Kojima’s latest epic, while those who had either never played one of the previous games, or had only intermittently immersed themselves, weren’t too sure.

The game isn’t perfect. Some of the cut scenes are far too long and drawn out, giving you time to go and make a cup of tea and still make it back in front of the TV without missing much. There’s also the feeling that those new to the series would be a bit blinded by the dialog and constant references to the past. But for those of us who had seen Solid Snake’s story from the beginning, it was pitched incredibly well.

The game play is in a league of its own combining the sneaking aspects that have been the mainstay of the series with some all out shooting action. Graphically, the game is astounding, with possibly only Killzone 2 and the barely-glimpsed Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 bettering the looks on display.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots is being released on the Platinum range on March 5, 2009. Simply put, this is a game that needs to be played. It’s a must-have for any PS3 owner, and with the new lower price come March, there really is no excuse not to get hold of a copy.

  1. lock_down:

I like how Sony’s Platinum range is represented by bright yellow.

    That makes sense…

  2. phranctoast:

There are still 16 million PS3 users that haven’t bought the game. Time to pick it up.

  3. Barnabe Jones:

Shame on you if you own a PS3 and have not played this game! MGS4 has been my favorite game this gen, and one of my all time favorites off all time.

I like the artwork for the platinum edition also. The cover I saw had a more of a comic book style to it.

  4. ncaissie:

    Not everyone like stealth games.
    I have a PS3 and will not buy MGS4.

I have borrowed it from a friend and couldn’t get into it.

  5. CarlB:

It’s almost caught up with GTA IV sales on the PS3… only one and a half million shy… I hear the “limited edition” MGS4 bundle is still available… na, I’ll wait until the price drop and full bc comes back.

  6. phranctoast:

You may be waiting a bit on the BC. Not sure if it’s ever coming back. You can still get the Sony Playstation Card and take off $100 of your first purchase making the 80GB PS3 $299.

But it really doesn’t matter for you now since you wouldn’t be in the market until you get back from Iraq. Any work when that will be for you?

  7. CarlB:

Certainly BC would come back after PS2 production stopped, wouldn’t it? Credit card offers, strings, and gauntlets… I’ve got great credit, but I think I’ll wait for the real drop.

Should be back soon… with a lot of catching up to do on the 360.

  8. kev:

makes better sense to rent it at $8. anyone can beat it in the 7 days rental period and from all indicators have a relatively low replay value after you’ve completed the story.

i just find it eye opening that sony is dropping the price of their “console seller” so early after launch.

  9. CarlB:

“*Reduced pricing based on purchase of PS3 at the $399 MSRP for 80GB. Does not include tax or shipping and handling fees. Your first single sales receipt purchase equal or greater than $299 (”Qualifying Purchase”) must be made by 3/31/09 and will automatically qualify you for a first $100 Statement Credit. The first $100 card credit will be applied to your PlayStation Card account 8-12 weeks after your first purchase (first purchase does not include balance transfer or balance transfer checks) account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. In some instances an application may require additional processing, in which case Instant Credit will be unavailable.”

It would actually be $430.99 to purchase the 80GB PS3 (with tax) from SonyStyle.com (I just put one in the cart online) and then I could get $100 card credit to purchase something else with the credit card two to three months later (if it actually showed up on the statement by then… past experience says I would have to call and go through the “customer service” gauntlet as well because of the “additional processing” mentioned above “in some instances”, and this isn’t even accounting for the hidden fees). I may be pessimistic, but this is definitely not the “$299 80GB PS3″ advertised.

  10. phranctoast:

I just don’t have enough time to devote to games to beat any game in just 7 days. The exception is last week when I had lincolns Bday and Presidents day off and I almost beat Bioshock.
You made the argument that it’s just plain better to rent than to buy all games.

Oh btw. GTA4 is 39.99 right now for both the 360 and the PS3. It might have to do with the amount they already sold to qualify it for platinum.

  11. phranctoast:

The only hidden fee is tax. My brother and cousin both did this, but went to the Sony style store in Garden City and and they take it off the price at purchase.

  12. Bourne:

I can’t see how you can’t buy this game! I was hoping Snake would end up impregnating Meryl with little snakes but hey you don’t always get your way. Also Otacon is a wee bit promiscuous isn’t he, first sniper wolf now Naomi, he’s a dawg really, not a nerd.

  13. Royzy:

“from all indicators have a relatively low replay value after you’ve completed the story.”

What the fuck are you spewing today. Replay value in the MGS games is regarded as being one of the highlights, particularly in MGS4.

  14. CarlB:

That’s why GameFly is the way to rent games, at least if you live in the states.

I don’t think the PS3 will be getting any more expensive anytime soon, and if they don’t put BC back in then I doubt I will be getting one. The 360 has enough for me anyway…

  15. kev:

royzy – what else is there if you don’t have online?

    must’ve hit a nerve…

  16. Barnabe Jones:

from all indicators have a relatively low replay value after you’ve completed the story.”

    – perhaps he is unaware of MGO? Or the steep learning curve of the various difficulty levels? Or the way that levels can play out differently each time you play them? Or maybe he is just an Xbot?

Bourne – I would have liked to see Ol’ Snake get to know the B&B corps a bit better myself. They were all much more attractive than Meryl. Plus there were four of them.

  17. Royzy:

kev, there are hundreds of easter eggs and unlockables. Read some MGS4 reviews, I just have (just incase you needed me to back my facts or w/e).

I wasn’t considering MGO when I said it, but yeh that is there too for people who are linked to the world wide web.

  18. lock_down:

Good timing, Konami just announced new MGO content…

    blog.us.playstation.com/2009/02/18/metal-gear-online-%E2%80%93-scene-expansion-details/

  19. darkwhitehair:

wow… kev commented about a game he never played… WOW!!! that is SOOooo not like kev…

  20. kev:

dwh – pretending to know what others have played…. typical….

i’m just saying, who wants to sit through hours upon hours of non playable cutscenes over and over….

sure you skip most, but easter eggs really aren’t that much of a draw.

must be a matter of opinion. not too impressed with the enemy AI either…

if it was really that great, they wouldn’t be reducing the price so early.

heck it took halo years to get to platinum hits status…. just sayin..

  21. Royzy:

Umm kev do you know anything about going ‘platinum’?

For a start ‘Platinum Range’ is a Sony PAL scheme, which Halo would not fall under. Also, it is based on sales – if it took Halo years to get to ‘that’ status, then it didn’t sell very well did it.

Unlockables add longevity if they add something new to the experience. In MGS, they do and it changes the experience each time you play through. Of course it is a matter of opinion, but replayability is something that has always been regarded to come with the MGS package. And the general reviews will tell you the same.

I couldn’t careless what you think of the AI, or whether you don’t want to press X to skip a cutscene. How is that relevant to the re-play value?

  22. darkwhitehair:

Ill tell you hwo I came to that conclusion kev…

first of all… no one would play MGS 4 JUST so they can bitch about how long the cut scenes are… anyone can find that out by a quick wiki search…

if you ACTUALLY played the game… you… like most other people… would be making fun of the ridiculous name of the characters… NOTE TO KOJIMA!!! Dont name your fuckign character after a fucking Martin Lawrence B movie… it fucking ruins the tension and drama in the cut scene…

also… pricing has nothing to do with the quality of a game… you keep talking about numbers like as if we bought our consoles to watch a horse race between two companies… great games like Beyond good and evil.. psychonauts, Ico have all been discounted because little retards would rather play Call of Duty 15 rather than buy a new and innovative game…

also… you have nothing better to say than typical fanboy bullshit… things which a respectable member of the video game community wouldnt say… thats how I know you have nothing important to add to the conversation…

  23. darkwhitehair:

also X isnt used to skip cut scenes…

YOU DIDNT PLAY THE GAME DID YOU ROYZY!!!

    I HAS CAUGHT-ed you!!!

    har har har…

  24. Royzy:

I thought someone would say that, well DWH, saying press start, then X didn’t have to same ring to it.

Btw – I’m aware there is a Platinum scheme for 360, though I don’t know what the requirements are.

  25. lock_down:

“Umm kev do you know anything about going ‘platinum’? ”

kev doesn’t know anything full stop.

    I jest, I jest…

  26. darkwhitehair:

YOU DIDNT PLAY MGS ROYZY!!! YOU ARE BIAS!!!

    har har

  27. kev:

poor royzy – i swear you show more ignorance in every post.

“platinum” status for gaming isn’t the same for records/cd sales, noob…

“platinum” status is what they call the “bargain priced” games. hence the reduction in price.

halo sold a TON of games, which is why they didn’t reduce the price to “platinum” status. they were making a ton of money off of it at $50 each…

    like i said, “rabid ps3 fanboys…”

  28. kev:

let me guess..you clowns think a game “going gold” means it sold a lot too, right? LMAO…!!

  29. SW:

I shall be linking to wikipedia.

Thus, heavy spades of salt are needed :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platinum_range

Note one of the first lines ‘Not to be confused with Platinum Hits’

  30. SW:

    Damn moderation.

Look up ‘platinum range’ on wikipedia.

Yes yes, its wikipedia. I know I know, take it with a bucket of salt if you wish.

  31. darkwhitehair:

really??? I thought going gold meant covering your nads in gold and getting a dog to lick it off…

and as far as I know… the “Greatest Hits” logo is when a game sells a certain amount on the PS3… and they re label it to sell at half the original price… like Warhawk and Resistance FOM…

    didnt know that didja retard??

  32. Royzy:

I didn’t say anything about records or cds did I?

kev, get a fucking clue and read what Platinum Range means for Playstation games. Then come back and bend over so I can kick you in the ass.

  33. phranctoast:

It’s not cheating if you dip your balls in gold and let your dog lick it of….because it’s your dog.

  34. darkwhitehair:

I heard that ability is coming as a DLC in Fable 2…

WHERE ARE YOU KEV!!! where is your response??

  35. lock_down:

    “WHERE ARE YOU KEV!!!”

    Who cares?

  36. Spideydog:

Hahahah, Kev is at it again….

Us useless fools don’t know the “business” like he does.

Best I get back to my ignorant, naive way of living.

Not like the blinkers you wear eh Kev ??

  37. darkwhitehair:

I do find it funny that for the 5 minutes that we discuss the topic… he posts almost instantly… and yet… when he is proven wrong… he is nowhere to be found…

  38. chillyfish:

Why did MGS4 sell so far below predictions?

  39. Juice:

How is 5 million below anythings guy? You still looking at the “Oct. 08″ they still got up on Vgcharts.com aren’t you.

  40. Juice:

    Vgchartz.com

  41. CarlB:

Sony states “titles must sell through over 400,000 units across PAL territories to achieve Platinum status”. Platinum Hits titles include such goodies as Lair, Army of Two, Fifa Street 3, Formula One Championship Edition, Genji: Days of the Blade, Need for Speed ProStreet, etc.

  42. Royzy:

Yeh, you would of thought Sony would raise the stakes a bit. Though I read 400,000 / 600,000 in different places.

Thing is, those required units haven’t changed since PS1, and games I do believe are tad more popular now?

I expect everything Wii related would be covered in shiny silver and yellow plastic if they have the same scheme going.

  43. phranctoast:

If you want to get technical. Playstation Titles don’t go platinum at all to indicate they sold so many titles or have been out for whatever time frame. That naming convention is used for XBOX 360 games. Playstation games go into the Greatest Hits category. So kev can drop his Platinum semantics bullshit.

  44. Royzy:

Platinum is in the PAL regions, Greatest Hits is in North America.

  45. phranctoast:

    ahhhh.. my bad

  46. kev:

sorry, losers. had to go home for the day…

    get a clue.. please….

either way, it reeks of desperation they would sell it at a discount so soon after launch…

maybe if it was the system seller they promised it wouldn’t be so… but alas…

so you clowns searched wiki to prove me wrong? nice..lmao…

  47. kev:

phranc – tell the author, not me..

“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots is being released on the Platinum range on March 5, 2009.”

    geez…

  48. phranctoast:

I don’t believe the author was arguing the meaning of platinum.
It’s a moot point anyway as I don’t live in any PAL region to recognize the name as anything other than 360 releases.

Your really stretching pretty far to try and indicate MGS4 is a shit game. 4.5 million people bought it already. Look at it this way. It’ll be cheaper for you when you inevitably by a PS3.

  49. lock_down:

I like how kev tells everyone to get a clue, but then basically admits he was wrong on his “facts” by failing to argue his (wrong) argument further.

    Nice going kev.

“so you clowns searched wiki to prove me wrong?”

I think you’ve been up to the same trick kev. The point you were trying to prove with Halo not going Platinum is explained on Wiki as follows:

“Games such as Halo: Combat Evolved may have a delayed Platinum Hits release in order to produce additional sales at the original MSRP.[citation needed][original research?]”

So basically there is no evidence to suggest it was purposefully delayed, and extensive searching of Google seems to verify this, yet kev gleefully ripped it off.

    Nice going kev.

  50. Royzy:

kev that was an AWFUL come back. It made me wince.

Right, bend over while we all queue up to kick you in the ass.

  51. phranctoast:

    *buy*
    can’t spell today

  52. SW:

“sorry, losers. had to go home for the day…”

Awww, I was hoping more for ‘I was at home boning 15 sexeh ladies losers’. Ill give you a C+.

I would’ve given you a B+ if you threw in the word ‘noob’. Can’t win them all I guess.

  53. darkwhitehair:

… THAT took you 24 hours to write??? jeez dude youre losing your touch… how bout forza eh??? Ill give you extra credit if you can find a numerical value for simulation…

thing is… you claim we are wrong… you claim desperation… but you dont explain it… which further proves my point that you come here just for the attention…

    tsk tsk… so sad…

  54. lock_down:

Oh don’t bring up Forza and its numerical values, we all what that’ll lead to.

  55. SW:

    IT HAS TEH MOREZ PHYSIKZZZZ!!!!!

  56. Arvis:

I don’t know guys, it just doesn’t feel right not having our monthly Forza Flame Fest…

    -Arvis

  57. darkwhitehair:

    hahaahahahahaha…

oh gawd… that was so funny… hahahahahahh kudos to you SW… youre my new bitch…

  58. kev:

phranc – you need to take off your fanboy goggles…

the author clearly was saying now that mgs4 is cheaper, there’s no reason to not buy it.

the reality is; sony is floundering, trying (hopelessly) to create sales for their albatross of a console…
much like killzone 2, mgs4 was hyped as THE definitive ps3 “system seller” before it was launched. when it failed to live up to promises, sony is forced to slasht the price of the game to try to generate interest….

it’s hilarious you weenies think i got my info from wiki… priceless…lmao..

dwh – it’s hilarious you clowns mock the fact forza clobbered the GT series in their first outing…

but go ahead..scream “50 million gt games” while you whisper it took almost 10 different games to hit this number… if forza had 10 games out, given their ratios, they’d have 50 million games too…

    ps3 fanboys; so much hype..so little education…

  59. phranctoast:

You continue to spew the most retarded points imaginable!

How is lowering the price of a game by $20 going to generate interest in a console that’s $399? If price is a problem for people as to not buy the console, $20 off a game isn’t going to be the cure all.
The game already proved itself in sales, and it did help sell more PS3’s when it was out. If you want to compare Halo, and it’s lack of a price drop, we can chalk that up to MS greed. Proprietary hardware is a great example.

    “ps3 fanboys; so much hype..so little education…”

If you’re the example of education, it appears your parents wasted their money.

  60. kev:

phranc -poor fanboy… i’m sorry you’re confused. come back in a few years….

so, given the price cut, you still don’t think it will garner interest in the ps3? more bad news for sony… but yeah, i’d have to agree with you…

the game wasn’t about proving itself, but proving itself to be the system seller sony, you fanboys, and kojima said it would be…. but if failed….

sorry you think the points are retarded… the ignorant often mock that which they can’t comprehend….

  61. phranctoast:

I don’t believe taking $20 off a game will make people who were not willing to pay $400 for a console do so…No not at all.
You make the poorest argument I’ve ever read.
Some people are simply cheap. They rent or buy used instead of buy new, and wait until games a cheap before they buy.
If you were so educated (as you claim) you would have a bit of reading comprehension skills under your collar to be able to determine that was the point Dave was getting at…

All you cheap PS3 users that were waiting for a price break…..here it comes.

  62. CarlB:

“How is lowering the price of a game by $20 going to generate interest in a console that’s $399?”

The game is supposed to be the showcase title for PS3 (at least until KZ2 releases), and the more people that can show it off on their system, the more interest it can generate for others who see it and have yet to purchase a PS3. It is not a cure all, but it doesn’t hurt.

They did mention it usually takes a year before a title is released as Platinum, so it is interesting they decided to release it three months early, about the same time Halo Wars will release. Little things like this count, and can add up if they do enough of them with the what little marketing resources Sony has left.

  63. lock_down:

“it’s hilarious you weenies think i got my info from wiki… priceless…lmao..”

Go on then kev, show us a credible source that backs up your Halo claim.

  64. CarlB:

I’m not sure there needs to be a source for the particular claim that Halo did not go platinum right away because of it’s continued success in sales (it makes sense)… unless somebody can come up with an alternative explanation.

  65. phranctoast:

Does Sony or the Publisher decide when a game gets reduced in price and put on the Platinum releases (Greatest Hits)??

  66. SW:

“I don’t know guys, it just doesn’t feel right not having our monthly Forza Flame Fest…

    -Arvis”

” it’s hilarious you clowns mock the fact forza clobbered the GT series in their first outing…”

    It happened Arvis!

*sniffle* Its the evolution of the blorge thread.

Someone tell me again how many physics calculations Forza has?!?

  67. phranctoast:

The GT series is so much better than the Forza series… Hands down…..waits

  68. lock_down:

phranc, what are you waiting for?

GT is better than Forza full stop. It’s a fact. And we don’t need to cite sources because it’s common sense…

  69. CarlB:

Maybe Microsoft “forgot” to make Halo platinum for awhile…

  70. darkwhitehair:

ohh yeah… oh Forza… ohh show me your Car Physics… ohh yeah FORZA!! oh yeah tell me how much GT sucks… OH YES!!! ITS A GLORIFIED DEMO!!!

    YES!!! FORZA 2… GREATEST SIM!!!

    YESSS YESS YES!!!! YEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!

  71. CarlB:

    so last gen
