New Xbox 360 SKU confirmed by Microsoft accidentally
For about a month now, rumors of a special edition Xbox 360 have been circulating around the Web. The new Xbox 360 was rumored to come in a special bundle with Resident Evil 5. However, it seems that there really is a special edition Xbox 360 as Microsoft inadvertently confirms it.
This reminds me of the Halo 3 special edition Xbox 360 situation that occurred last year when pictures of it were leaked during E3. Keeping news as big as a new SKU a secret is quite impossible due to the level of coordination involved with manufacturers and retailers.
News of a new Red Xbox 360 was prematurely revealed when Microsoft sent a PR communication regarding Halo Wars to the retailers and press today. The letter specified that the Halo Wars offer did not apply to the Red Xbox 360 Elite console.
Contrary to belief, the color red has very little to do with the Red Ring of Death issue. According to the original rumor, the Red Xbox 360 would be a special edition unit to celebrate the launch of Resident Evil 5 (RE5), which has somehow become synonymous with the color of blood.
There has been no direct confirmation about the new SKU, except for the fact that only EBGames will carry it as part of some exclusive deal. Would I trade in my sleek matte black Xbox 360 Elite for the bright red one? Probably not. However, gamers without an Xbox 360 might be be interested in picking up a bundle with a copy of RE5.
It seems like Microsoft is banking on RE5 to help move some consoles. It will be interesting to see if there is anything extra to the special edition unit. Stay tuned for more details regarding this new Xbox 360.

Chillyfish, give credit where credit is due. Mike Ferro’s stories have shown an incredible decrease in PS3 bias in just the last year, and there has been hardly any detectable in his latest stories, including this one. Just because he says “contrary to belief” instead of “contrary to some people’s belief” and then mentions RRoD doesn’t mean it is “100% opinion and 0% facts”.
In fact some people would argue RRoD was at one time between 3% to 33% factual (I’m one of that percentage, though MS has taken good care of me so far), and Microsoft probably won’t get over this rep anytime this gen. I imagine more than one person is going to buy this, airbrush an RRoD on the case then rig it (hopefully they will have to rig it) to display a real RRoD over YouTube. Of course, this will only increase Microsoft’s sales numbers over those they are already getting from the RRoD consoles that are now out of the warranty period.

Does PS3 have a RE5 bundle? I know the PS3 shelves will be covered in Killzone 2 bundles around then, but it’d be nice to see some RE5 ones too.

That just epitomises everything wrong with Microsoft…cashing in on their faulty hardware, just like they did with disc-scratched games.
The PS3 will have a RE5 bundle most likely, it will in Japan anyway, but after playing the demo I don’t think I’ll be buying RE5.

Perhaps its just my craptop, as I do find it runs faster than Firefox on my desktop, which itself runs circles around IE on both machines.
