‘09 Blockbusters: God of War III, MAG, and Alan Wake redefine gaming landscape

February 22, 2009

'09 Blockbusters: God of War III, MAG, and Alan Wake redefine gaming landscape Two of the biggest games to be announced recently have been confirmed to be coming out later this year. The first game is the highly anticipated God of War III. The other game is the mysterious game MAG title revealed last year. With other games like Alan Wake and Halo ODST, this year could be as big as 2007 as far as game lineup goes.

MAG is a mysterious title revealed by Sony late last year during E3. The title is being developed by the famed Zipper Interactive studio. Zipper Int. has been known for the acclaimed original SOCOM series on the PS2. Since then, similarly to Guerrilla Games (Killzone 2) the studio has been quietly working on this secret title for about four years now. From the single image revealed by the studio the game looks like it might be shaping up to look as good as Killzone 2.

MAG has been described as a military shooter mixed with MMO aspects. The game supports up to 256 players who will participate in an all out war broken down into 8-men squads. Each squad will be led by a squad leader who is promoted through the ranks. Players can also be promoted to General/Commander status and have the power to view battlefields to send commands out to the squad leaders (see video below for better understanding).

Both MAG and God of War III have been confirmed by Sony to be coming out later this year. The chances are that these two games will be part of Sony’s holiday line-up. Other 2009 games revealed by Sony’s press release are:  Killzone 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, inFamous, Heavy Rain and MLB 09 The Show.

One of the biggest games I am looking for on the Xbox 360 is Alan Wake. This game has been in development for over four years as well. It was initially teased in 2005 by Remedy Studios for the PC and Xbox 360. The story seems to be very similar to games like Silent Hill where two realities start to merge together. In the game, Alan suffers from insomnia (Wake – get it?) and goes to seek help from a sleep disorder clinic. However, Alan soon realizes that his nightmares might be coming true.

The studio teased that the game could come out later this year and after four long years, I believe this game is done baking in the oven. With so many great games such as the highly anticipated Halo 3:ODST standalone expansion pack coming out this year, it looks like 2009 might top 2007 and 2008 as the best year in gaming.

  1. lock_down:

Alan Wake has got to be vapourware, surely. Four years and there’s still no hard evidence that it’s coming out this year.

I hope 360 users enjoy playing it this year…that is if it has ever condensed by then.

    If it does, then….. wooohooooo!

    I’m a bit unsure though.

  5. Barnabe Jones:

At least we’ve been slowly seeing more and more of GOW 3… MAG and Alan wake, we haven’t seen anything at all really. I would be very surprised if they end up hitting 09.

  6. Royzy:

OMFG TEH KILLZZZONE IN 4 DAYZ FUR REAL.

Anyway, I hope MAG turns out to be pretty good. It for me just has a vapor like presence.

I’m really looking forward to Uncharted 2 though.

  7. CON:

Why do sony insist on cgi trailers???

  8. lock_down:

Go and watch the God of War 3 trailer then.

  9. Royzy:

“Why do sony insist on cgi trailers???”

For Killzone they claimed it was to ’set a bar’.

But yeh cgi trailers – not cool. Usually.

  10. Barnabe Jones:

Con, Both the trailers for Uncharted 2 and GOW were created with the in-game engines. They both look amazing.

Roy, I beat the mission “Scientific Pursuit” last night, and I never received a trophy. I even proceeded to play the “Tranquility Lane” mission just to make sure there wasn’t a delay. Did this ever happen to you? I’m hoping that maybe the trophy will just appear the next time I load the game.

  11. Royzy:

I just Googled your ‘incident’, and this came up.

  12. Spideydog:

That MAG game looks awesome…. it looks and sounds like an advanced version of BF2. I will keep an eye on that one.

Is it me or does it look like sony is getting a little momentum with games coming out ?? (they still need to promote a whole lot better …!!) It could be just me though …lol

  13. SW:

MAG could be an interesting modern day Planetside.

Shame its not coming for PC.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

Wow. Thanks Roy. I can’t actually read it until I get home tonight, but I’ll be sure to check it out. By the way, I beat the Tranquility Lane mission and STILL do not have a trophy for the Scientific Pursuit mission.

  15. Royzy:

I wouldn’t worry too much Barnabe, since you will have to play through the game again anyway if you wana collect ‘em all.

  16. JofaMang:

You can get all the trophies on one play through (stay neutral and reload for lvls 8, 14, and 20 for all the kharma levels).

You don’t get a trophy for a storyline quest that is skipped accidently (like talking to dr lee before doing the GNR radio quest).

I ended up playing through twice to get all the trophies because of the aforementioned skip I accidentally performed. That, and I killed all the slavers and rescued their slaves before realizing what I needed to do for Strictly Business.

  17. phranctoast:

    Mike,

I’m pretty sure the games you mentioned (MAG, GOW3) are for the fiscal year of 09 which ends March of 10′.

  18. Barnabe Jones:

    JofaMang,

That’s a very clever strategy. Too bad I didn’t have the foresight to think of that myself a few weeks ago. I already have to play through twice, but I’ll try that my next run through.

  19. Arvis:

    Barnabe & Roy,

I let a friend try out Fallout 3 and he accidentally erased my character. T_T

You guys have fun continuing on without me, I’m sending it back to Gamefly and concentrating on Street Fighter IV.

    -Arvis

  20. Barnabe Jones:

Ouch… I’m sorry to hear that. It looked like you had completed a lot of the side quests also.

At least you have Street Fighter to keep you occupied. I can’t wait to try that game.

  21. darkwhitehair:

BASTARD!!! this is why I keep a gun to the side of people’s head when they play my PS3…

anyways… damn Gamefly… I still havent got my SF 4 copy… did you buy the special edition??

  22. Royzy:

JofaMang, I was going to do that on my first paly through, but by the time I saved a game I could reload, I couldn’t become neutral enough, nevermind evil. My character is just too goddamn saintly.

Plus I missed the GOAT so I have to play again anyway. I’ll save a file half way through level 7 and 13 next time (though I’ll do it for 19 this time).

    Arvis, ….

    “NoooooOOOoOOOOoOOOOOOOOO!!!”

Ages ago, I accidently overwrote a friend’s much older cousin’s FFVIII file, due to a memory card swapping over accident. I got pulverized for it.

  23. Royzy:

    play*through. Roy = douche.

  24. Arvis:

    Barnabe & Roy,

……um, I seem unable to send Fallout back. I think I am just wasting my Gamefly subscription at this point. However, I am sorely tempted to create a female character and play through neutral and with different abilities.
I have this idea for a chick with mad Charisma and Luck with awesome Unarmed skills, going through the game being a huge douche, but still ultimately helping people.

If it weren’t for Street Fighter (which is incredible, btw) I would have already started this character. And yes, DWH, I got the Collector’s Edition of SFIV.

    -Arvis

  25. Royzy:

Arvis, I was going bend my gender too next time around too. Your douchey fisty woman sounds like a plan.

I’m going to blow the sh*t out of Megaton next time and be a real arsehole. Lucas Simms can suck it.

  26. Arvis:

    Roy,

With my first character (R.I.P.) I got Lucas Simms killed by snitching on Burke. I felt SO GUILTY about that…

This time around, my “douchey fisty woman” just seduced Burke into changing his mind about blowing up the town… now I have no idea what’s going to happen, since Burke said he would “call for me soon.” *shudders*

    -Arvis

  27. Barnabe Jones:

After seeing the “bad” response text options (which are usually hilarious), I’m really looking forward to being as bad as possible on my next run through.
