Killzone 2 sells out fast and furious
It seems that Killzone 2 mania has reached fever pitch as the game has been selling quite well just from pre-orders alone. However, after a quick survey around the retail chains, it seems that the game is selling just as well from walk-in purchases. In fact, in some retail channels the game has completely sold out.
Killzone 2 is possibly one of the most anticipated shooters of this year and it is making massive waves. If you missed it, you can catch our review of the game right here. For those still sitting on the fence go ahead and download the demo off the PSN store and give it a shot.
It was announced that Europe alone had 1.1 million pre-orders for the game, which is phenomenal when you consider the fact that our brethren across the pond really don’t care for pre-orders as much as we do. It is unknown exactly how many pre-orders were placed within the States. Sony has already revealed that Killzone 2 broke just about every pre-order record they have for first party games.
Since I have been playing the press copy, I was in no hurry to pick up my personal pre-ordered copy. Usually if I end up enjoying a game, I will go out and buy a personal copy to support the developers. I found out something interesting when I went to pickup my pre-order copy from Gamestop recently. The closest Gamestop to my house was completely sold out of Killzone 2.
I decided to call around to various locations and noticed that other local stores were sold out as well. I also called out to two local Target stores and they were completely sold out. Best Buy had two copies left and indicated a shipment will arrive by mid next week. Several of the Gamestop locations were close to being sold out as well.
It seems like Amazon UK was sold out at one point as well. Other gamers on the official PS3 forums have indicated that their local retailers across the States have sold out as well. As expected the game is selling well. However, the question remains – just how well is it selling?
The only way to find out is to wait for the official numbers from Sony. NPD numbers should be rolling out around the second week of next month to show figures for US only. Personally, I expect sales to be aligned to that of Metal Gear Solid 4 with around 3 million units sold during the launch window, eventually topping off around 5 million units sold.

Quoted comment from gaming news site:
“Listening to Mike Ferro is like a runaway 14 (year old) listening to a pimp. He’ll say whatever the fanboys want to hear. I’ll wait for someone with some credibility.”
LOL! Your infamous.

The game is amazing. I’ll go out on a limb and say better than COD.
March 1st, 2009
the aiming is COD style, but the red eyes take as much to kill as what the crimira take on R2, so you end up using shit loads of ammo to take them down if theres more then two there and you cant just focus on the head.
also the game tended to have a red faction two feel about it, though that being said more of a cross between RF2 and COD4 style aimming

Ok, I have been able to play this game for around 5 hours over the weekend and feel that it’s my time to put my 2 cents in.
Before I get attacked for my criticisms of this game (keep in mind that some of them are going to be tongue in cheek) keep on record that I am saying that it’s the best shooter on the PS3 and a ‘must play’ for all PS3 owners.
If I only had one word to sum up my experience with this game, it would be ‘underwhelmed’. For the entire week I had been reading from PS3 owners about how this game is incredible etc, so my expectations were lofty to be honest. However after the pleasant surprise of the quality of the graphics wears off, I couldn’t help but think to myself that I have done this all before.
This game does need some getting used to. When I started the campaign and started to walk around, the character seemed to be walking in slow motion, either that or he had a lot of chewing gum on his shoes. Again, this wasn’t an issue after I got used to it.
Being used to shooters on the 360, the default button used to shoot things is the right trigger. This made perfect sense, as guns do have triggers… However the developers here decided that the trigger was used for grenades, and the bumper is used for shooting things. I know that these configurations can be changed, but wouldn’t you think that someone may have got into the ear of the game developers and mentioned this to them? Again, something that just needed some getting used to.
I had some gripes with AI on both sides. On quite a few occasions my teammates would be under cover, but were flanked by the red eyes. Normally if someone is shooting you, you’d probably want to move, because let’s face it, being shot isn’t exactly a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, my squad mates aren’t that normal, either that or they think they’re channeling Chuck Norris, because they just decided to sit there and continue getting shot. Same goes for the bad guys, they would be sitting behind cover, I would flank them and shoot the crap out of their legs or torso, and they’d just sit there focusing on my other squad mates. Talk about not wanting to break one’s concentration.
I also have to question hit detection. There were times where I had lined up some bad guys and unloaded on them from a distance, only for them not to be scathed at all. That left me scratching my head. My only explanation to that would be that they were going for ultra realism and decided to give me a gun with a crooked sight.
Which brings me to my next point, nut shots. I don’t care how tough you are, if you get shot in the dick, you’ll be on the ground crying like a little girl. I shot a red eye in the dick (or the region where human dicks are) and nothing. Do these guys have dicks? As a test, I shot a squad mate in the dick. He didn’t go down either. Don’t people have dicks in the future?
I touched on graphics earlier, yes they are excellent. As good as Crysis, I doubt it, but that’s not an insult at all. However I can’t help but think that maybe the developers should have spent more time on character models. I know the Helghast wear the same uniform, I get that, but are they all the same height too? Sure it would help even out basketball teams on that planet, and we won’t have to dance around calling midgets “little people”, but I believe that if they mixed the character models up a little, added a few fat dudes etc, it would have made the game even that much more realistic.
I had a play at multiplayer too. I must say, this seems to be the game’s strong point. A similar upgrade feature to COD4 as well as games constantly changing does add to the longetivity to the game. Maybe i’ve been spoiled by Left 4 Dead, but I could not see any real evidence of teamwork when I was playing. To me there were 16 guys on one team, 16 guys on another, running their separate ways and whichever team had accumulated the most kills wins (in one form of multiplayer). Perhaps I was with a bunch of people who didn’t believe in teamwork, and it was hard to co-ordinate without a headset, so I may have to revisit this point.
Overall, putting aside gripes, I found this to be an excellent game and worth of being the PS3’s best shooter (Resistance 2 was good also). Maybe when they get around to making Killzone 3 in 2013 they could address these gripes, however they’re not game breakers.
I’ll give this game a solid 85 out of 100. You can’t say I am not fair in my scoring, I have given it a higher mark than the likes of Edge Magazine etc.

HAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAh that was one of the best reviews for Killzone 2… EVAR!!!
ok first… gimme your PSN ID… we couldnt play this week… so we will play next week…
Second… yeah Im sorry that the hype ruined it for you… I know what thats like…
but yeah most of your criticism… could be used for any other game… I guess its just not worth it to have a good hit detection or good AI in FPS… I played multiplayer and havent even touched the Single player… yeah after left 4 dead… this seems very very selfish… but later on the class system makes working together worthwile…
also… funniest thing… when going through ALL the developer previews… I saw them talk about how the enemy reacted to being shot… how they would spin around and stuff… well in multiplayer… it would be unfair to the guy being shot at if he just spun around or fell to the ground after taking one bullet… so when youre shooting at him… he just stands there… no animation… but when you kill him… he does this weird dance or pirouette and act like he just got shot…
its fucking hilarious… the controls couldve been better… but I guess they want you to feel like a “little person” and a tank… you move and turn slowly… crouch doesnt do much… I think I wouldnt have died as much or gotten a lot more kills if this played like COD…
still… awesome game…
good job harry…
March 1st, 2009
also cheers to carl.. I heard he may come home b August of next year… maybe if theres a price drop… he will pick up a PS3… it will be so awesome…
March 1st, 2009
harry, every positive point you made you followed up with 3-4 negative ones… what difficulty did you play on? cause i started on the hardest you can go at the start (you unlock the last one later on) and well… none of those problems seemed to happen, apart from my team only pushing forward after i had, if i flanked the red eyes, normally there would be 2-3 of them around the corner, one of which with a knife and i’d b dead…
really, dicks? right there should be why no one will pay attention to the review
“oh man, street fighter 4 sucks”
“really? i enjoyed the hell out of it, still playing it like crazy”
“nah when ever i kick one of them in the penis area they don’t fall on the ground in pain, the game is screwed man!”

Your mistake was buying the hype! I did the same thing with GTA4. Almost wish I never bought it now.

damn mick… dont ruin it… the best of the best shooters have many many problems… dont think that harry is bashing on anything… I know secretly he is a PS3 fanboy… I KNOW IT!!!
SW… fuck you GTA 4 was awesome… if you want random violence then you got Saints Row 2… if you want good story and a great experience… you got GTA 4… YOURE BIASED!!!

GTA 4 was good if you had 1-2 week breaks while playing, i found myself bored if i play it for a few days in a row, but isolated it felt pretty solid, though i’m thinking i’ve got to replay it now though dunno when ill get time
March 1st, 2009
THATS BECAUSE YOU HATE EVERYTHING!!!
every night was GTA 4 night.. every night… played the story mode till I finished it… it was so awesome…

im not kev, how do i hate everythin?
March 1st, 2009
btw he never said how old he was… stupid 14 year old
March 1st, 2009
Gotta say I love Killzone online, more so as you unlock stuff. Wasn’t so great at the start when people only had 2 guns to choose from and a grenade to share among the team.
2 more ribbons and I get aerial bots! Yeehaw!
Harry I never thought about the height thing until you mentioned it. That is something a lot of games don’t (but should) implement.
I will say something that bothers me about the Campaign – lip syncing.
March 1st, 2009
mick, you seemed to have taken the dick shooting paragraph a little too seriously. At least DWH got a bit of a chuckle out of it.
I may have had some criticism towards the game, but I did have some praise for it also. No game is perfect, no game deserves an A+ or 100/100 rating. Not even Gears 2. hehe
March 1st, 2009
Royzy, agreed. I think in the world of video games everyone is the same height!
March 1st, 2009
the only game i would ever give a 100 to was super mario kart for super nintendo, i just don’t like how every reviewer now days days 5 words on whats good and the rest of the time bashing, though about the controls i have to agree, annoying as hell trying to use the knife and isnt much of a point cause melee gets the job done just as quick
DWH, should finish story mode (finally) tonight, im currently invading after what happened to the new sun… the train and ATEC levels took me a little longer then most for some reason :S, in which case i shall finally go onine!!!

arvis you ganna buy into this and grab killzone 2 or you not bothered?
March 2nd, 2009
after the first mission I decided to play the killzone 2 drinking game and drank whenever there was any type of profanity. Iwas pretty drunk by the fourth mission.
Definitely a great game. A lot of oh shit moments where you feel overwhelmed. It seemed that so e of the best parts of other fps’s made up a majority of kz2’s missons. The mp seems really good. Only really played that for an hour or so. I think I’ll learn some of the maps in skirmish mode before I continue to get owned online. Actually didn’t do too bad. I like how the goals keep changing.
March 2nd, 2009
I still have to finish up the campaign. I’m up to the ATEC fight.
I managed to get a few online matches in last night, but I think I was matched with people who were a lot higher level that I was. In a matter of a few hours, my kill to death ratio took a severe beating. It’s going to be hard trying to fix that.
March 2nd, 2009
Mick,
Sorry man, not my kind of game.
Glad Sony has another bonafide hit on their hands, though.

March 2nd, 2009
ATEC fight was tough. I did it by switching out my Machine gun with the Rocket launcher, and using the handgun to shoot the electrical coils. That way I can at least hit it with two rockets before it recovered. Avoiding the missiles was the most difficult.
March 2nd, 2009
NO SPOILERS!! ASSHOLES!!!
also Im surprised at the low amounts of hate that harrry got for this review… wow… maybe we’re all growing up… Im so proud of you guys *sniff*
Arvis… I may get sf 4 today… will spam you with a million invites if I do get it…
boobs…

“but I think I was matched”
Thats the nail in the coffin for me. Matchmaking sucks balls.
March 2nd, 2009
also if you guys want to join a clan with me and roy… go and sign up in Negative Gamer forums and post your PSN ID…
we will play together on the weekends… yay GROUP HUG!!!
March 2nd, 2009
Harry’s overall review wasn’t bad at all. It seemed like his main complaint was, that after the hype the game didn’t make his jaw drop to the floor, which is fair enough. It seemed like he enjoyed it though.
I think…. overall the AI is great. The game is very challenging due to the tactics that the HellCast employ while fighting. I’ve seen HellCast, flank, charge, duck and cover, hide, etc. I did notice an instance or two were the Hellcast seemed to not notice me, but I think they may have been preoccupied with my squad mates.
Also the machinegun type weapons are not as accurate at a distance, but I think that’s generally the case in real life as well. Due to the kickback the guns give, it’s harder to get a tight grouping at a distance. I’m not sure that would be considered a hit detection issue. Also the HellCast have to dress the same, or else Radec will have them executed…
We all know the FPS genre has been done to death. Still, I’m hard pressed to name many FPSs that have done it much better then KillZone 2 has.
March 2nd, 2009
SW, you don’t have to use matchmaking, if anything I don’t recommend it.
If you are playing against people a similar rank, they are probably trying to get similar ribbons too. It is annoying having most of your team trying to set up turrets which they have just unlocked when you can only place 4 active ones per team at a time.
March 2nd, 2009
I never expected Killzone 2 to redefine the FPS genre… just make some improvements… I do count on Infinity Ward to make a completely fucking awesome FPS with MW 2 that will make all the gamers in the world cream their pants in unision..
March 2nd, 2009
harry’s review was good.
I happen to like my zoom and fire on L1 and R1 and not L2 and R2, but thats just preference. All games should allow you to map it the way you want. HL2 (orange box) pissed me off as I had to use R2 to fire. The trigger on the 360 controller is more suitable for a trigger. The “trigger” on the ps3 controller is better suited for driving games as an accelerator.
The AI really depends on the difficulty. I found they did things that surprised me and I found they under stupid shit as well (like getting shot and standing there)
I had no problem with aiming or hit detection. I found it easier when using most automatic weapons to pull the trigger for each bullet you want to fire when firing over distance. I was able to get head shots with the smg with no problem. Even when close, to avoid the kick back i would fire at an enemy hit them, wait a fraction of a second and fire again. The hit animation would be going on so they wouldn’t be firing at you anyway.
favorite weapon. Bolt gun!
March 2nd, 2009
Harry,
You sure your experience with K2 isn’t tempered just a little by your preference for the 360? Just a LITTLE? I mean, I’m no fan of the game, but you say that anyone giving it a perfect score “needs to get their head checked,” and yet it has tons of perfect scores all over the web and in print.
You’re vocal about your preference for the 360, so I find it difficult to believe that you went into your K2 experience with an open mind. It’s pretty clear from your review and attitude that you were actively LOOKING for the faults, while passively letting the good bits hit you randomly.
Not that this is necessarily a BAD thing, mind you. I tend to care less about 360 exclusives simply because I know I won’t be playing them with any degree of regularity. You understand that your dissent is part of a minority opinion, and although that doesn’t mean that your opinion is any less valid, I can’t help but feel like it is colored slightly by your preconceived belief that wouldn’t care for the game no matter how good it was.
-Arvis
March 2nd, 2009
GET ON THE pSN ARVIS!! I HAZ IT NAAAAOW!!!!!
March 2nd, 2009
Chris,
I can’t say I was actively looking for faults, these faults I found sprung up on me all on their own. Some of these faults have actually been echoed by the PS3 boys on this site, so to say that they aren’t warranted wouldn’t be true.
“I can’t help but feel like it is colored slightly by your preconceived belief that wouldn’t care for the game no matter how good it was.” – Chris, I stated that it is still an excellent game, and gave it an 85, which in my books is close to an A-, so I have actually been a lot fairer than some professional press out there who have given it as low as 70. As I stated at one point, no game is perfect. If KZ2 didn’t have any of the faults I pointed out, I would have tipped my hat at the game even further and given it 100, however this game is no Nadia Comenici, it didn’t stick the dismount.
By the way, have you actually played the game yet?
March 2nd, 2009
Royzy, fair enuff.
*removes nail from coffing using the claw part of the hammer*
March 2nd, 2009
You guys working for blorge read harry sachz’s comment and learn how to write a funny and entertaining review.
His -hype free- review almost makes me want to buy a PS3 to play KZ2.
March 3rd, 2009
NOooooo dont say that… WE DONT WANt AN XBOT IN HERE!!! NOoooooooooooooooooooo
March 3rd, 2009
arvis – don’t lie…”has tons of perfect scores all over the web and in print”
it’s not even the majority giving it perfect scores and certainly not a ton…
March 3rd, 2009
Harry,
Fair enough. I re-read your review and it didn’t seem as negative as I originally thought. Apologies.
@kev: somehow, I knew THAT word was going to irk you…
-Arvis
March 3rd, 2009
pfft… dont worry bout kev… he associates with bad people… you dont see them in PSN!!!
March 4th, 2009
arvis – when it’s the minority, it’s hard to justify the word “ton” unless you’re a blithering fanboy… pretty easy math, sport…
March 4th, 2009
Kev,
Justification: “Tons” was used as hyperbole for “multiple” in order to create a viewpoint that contrasts with Harry’s implication that K2 does not deserve ANY perfect scores. Debate 101. It doesn’t always have to be insults, does it, Kev?
-Arvis
March 4th, 2009
arvis – he has a point. there is no perfect game. never will be. a perfect score says more about the fanboyism of the writer than the quality of the game.
to ellude that there are TONS of perfect scores for killzone 2 is false….a lie… a misquote… pick one.
March 4th, 2009
Kev,
You don’t know what “hyperbole” means, do you? Or rather, maybe you do, but you don’t fully understand it.
Regardless, a perfect score does not mean it is a perfect game. It just means it’s the one of the best in its genre, maybe THE best. Not only did K2 get a “perfect” score from this incredible website, but it also got perfect scores from Giant Bomb, X-Play, Gamepro, and multiple OPMs. Compared to the number zero (the number of perfect scores Harry implied the game deserved), do you see how someone could accurately claim that at least five perfect scores qualifies as “tons?” Be reasonable.
-Arvis
March 4th, 2009
NO NO NO!!! all those reviewers are BIASED!!!
well I already wrote something about this… but still… I think you can give perfect scores to a game… look at what the game is trying to do… see if it achieves it,.. see if it is good… and then see if it has any bugs or stupid design decisions…
doesnt mean its the best game EVAR… it means its a great game because it achieves what it wanted to do… which is why I believe the old tony hawk games and ocarina of time got the great scores they did…
wow… I just wrote a buncha crap to justify against kev… I feel awfull… so dirty…
pfft.. LIVE is for Pedos anyways…
