Has Killzone 2 raised the bar for games on all consoles?
Killzone 2 is good, very good. It’s not perfect, as a lot of the commenters on GAMER have picked up on, but the majority of reviewers, including our very own Mike Ferro, think it’s very close to being so. The question is, has it raised the bar for games, not just on the PS3, but every console and even the PC?
The biggest area of success for Killzone 2 has to be in the graphics department – the visuals are simply stunning throughout. Again, they aren’t perfect, and some have argued that Crysis on the PC and even Gears of War 2 on the Xbox 360 look better. I’m not so sure. I’ve certainly never been as impressed with how good looking a game is.
The story and setting of Killzone is strong, but I’ve experienced stronger. As an experience, being in the middle of a raging battle is very immersive, but there are times when it all feels a little by-the-numbers.
The single-player campaign is actually quite short, shorter than I would have expected from a state-of-the-art first-person shooter. But there is a decent replayability factor. Online is a different story though, with most people regarding this as the most fun they’ve had in multiplayer since Call of Duty 4 was first released.
Microsoft, it seems, is also impressed, with a spokesman congratulating the people at Sony and Guerilla Games on Killzone 2. However, talking to Game Guru, the MS spokesman also thinks there’s more to come, with some forthcoming Xbox 360 exclusives set to overshadow Killzone 2.
We congratulate Sony and Guerilla Games for their effort with Killzone 2, however this is only the beginning of a new wave. The current technology employed for certain unannounced Xbox 360 exclusives far surpasses what gamers have seen in any game so far. Gears of War was the beginning of this technological benchmark when released on the 360 and this lineage will be carried forward in the following months with exclusives that shall stand for a new definition of gaming experience and provide stiff competition for the opposition.
You have to assume Microsoft is talking about graphics, although there isn’t actually a mention of this being the case. Maybe MS is more thinking along the lines of games being immersive entertainment, or even that some of the exclusives on the way will exceed Killzone 2’s multiplayer goodness? It does seem that Microsoft is admitting Killzone 2 is head and shoulders above every other game though, with the possible exception of Gears of War 2.
So, to answer the question in the first paragraph, yes, Killzone 2 has raised the bar, but only in two areas – graphics and online multiplayer. And even then, there’s a real possibility that both of these elements could be bettered by new games just around the corner.
Enjoy the glory of Killzone 2 while it lasts because as the industry dictates, the next big thing is just around the corner.

What’s the big deal here.
The Xbox & the PS3 are very evenly matched, that’s all there is to it.
Trying to talk up a very slight difference as if it were massive (either way) is ridiculous.
Whether it’s Sony or Microsoft it doesn’t matter, the fact is both consoles produce a near identical result.
…..and neither have 100% of their respective game catalogues pushing each machine to the max either.

Graphically it has displayed what consoles are capable of. In terms of gameplay, i’m going to go with DWH and say that COD 4 should be the gold standard, and not Shelton Benjamin.

I did not read the article yet but based on the title alone I can say no because every reviewer say that the game does nothing to improve on the shooting genre. There is nothing new except really good looking graphics on a simple dark atmosphereless Environment.

almost finished single player (i think) up to where your fight radic, i kill every wave up till the RPG-ers come into the room and i just take to long to pick them off with the sniper rifle
im dieing to try the MP but im setting myself the goal of finishing the SP first… and im thinking that when i get on there, there is going to be alot more people out ranking me, so i gotta do it the hard way.

This just seems like Microsoft’s typical propaganda. When every Sony hits a high, MS comes out within hours with a negative rebuttal. MS’s crown jewel exclusive FPS, Halo 3, just got its ass kicked very badly. It’s to be expected we’d hear this sort of nonsense.

In a world were Wii Fit is the best game of all time, sales have no bearing what so ever on the caliber of the game itself.

KILLZONE 2 is now the greatest FPS ever made. This game is more than a Halo/Gears of War killer. KILLZONE 2 has raise all the bars and Microsoft is getting worry as they should. Gears of War has always sucked online and offline all hype KILLZONE 2 delivers. Halo is just pure hype. Go buy this game it has endless replay value like Resistance 2 another ass game.
Forget Call of Duty 4 that game is old trash it get KILLZONE 2 is ten times better.

It was disappointing to find out that the game is only 6 hours long, that is 10 dollars an hour for entertainment, I know that does not account for online play, but come on, Resistance 1 and 2 was at least 10-15 hours of signal campaign. I am also having trouble with the aiming controls, resistance and COD4 seem so instinctive, but with killzone its like relearning. and 3 years is nothing what about gran torismo 5? and final fantasy 13?
it will piss me off if killzone 2 has some game expanding dlc for 10 bucks a piece, I could have waited another 6 months to a year for double the game play and more instinctive controls
games need to start coming up with more replay value besides “endless hours of online play”

You have to realise something. A computer is way better for browsing the internet. No restrictions what so ever. Also It makes no sence to store pictures or videos on a Game Console when I got Memory in my computer. When I get around to using my Camera it not like I’m coming home to download it to my Game console. There are just some things that have no place on a console. It’s like your telling me I don’t need a computer. There is no way in the world I would pay for the internet just to play games. The price does not justify it. Streaming that kind of content from my computer to my 360 just makes more sence. Why do I want to stack my Hard Drive with movies and pictures. Especially you PS3 Guys because some games require mandatory installs. My 120G is ment for gaming and nothing more. Also my Computer is hooked up directly to my HDTV so never really use the 360 to stream. Second 1080P Games for the PS3 does not exsist. I think there might be a PSN Game but those are arcade titles. Most PS3 Games are not even upto 720P. Not even Killzone 2. And yes he 360 does have surround sound too. It had it before you got a firmware download to make it happen. Battery charger are you kidding me. At least I have the option to replace my battery. When your controller starts to die faster due to your internal battery loosing juice you have no option but to go buy a whole new controller. Also the wire is like super short for the recharge. My friend cannot even sit on his couch when the controller needs charging because the cord is so short. Sony must believe that their only sellng to Japanese. Also Ivan the wireless adapter I never needed because I have all the connections coming into my living room where more products and using the internet now. It’s just not limited to your computer. As for the PSN Calssics. Arcade offers more just like 360 catalouge. Better Games, Better Graphics, Better Online. Also the community games will bring things to gaming that will only be experienced on the 360. The Menu on the PS3 is so boring compared NXE . And to finish that processing power you talk about will never be realized because your Out Dated Grapic Card and 256 GPU will bottel neck the system. That why Killzone has such little environment, no trees and very little organics. A very simple game to make look good. All 6 hours of it.

Let’s all face the fact. Killzone 2 is one of, if not the best looking game in a long while. I have GeOW2 which everybody keeps mentioning, but it is up close that Killzone’s graphics come out on top. The textures retain their quality up close, and unless Microsoft does come up with something spectacular, the fact that you can store 50GB of data on a PS3’s bluray disc and just under 10GB on a dual layer DVD is what will remain the difference. Let’s not argue over how long it took. It doesn’t matter. It’s the end product which matters, which is a great game in its own right. That is not to say GeOW2 is bad, because it is brilliant. It is just that Kz2 is a really good game, and I say that as a gamer and not a fanboy, as I have no preference. I buy games because they’re good.
@ CAD: GeOW2 had a really short single player mode too. It comes into its own online, but is still a good game. Halo 3 also had a really short single player game, but is also a really good game. Funny how it is so easy to slant things.
And as a general statement, I think what could decide this generation’s consoles is if either Sony or Microsoft bid for an exclusive remake of FFVII or a game of a similar stature due for a remake. Anybody sitting on the fence would be likely to join in at such a point. And if it were Sony, then I’m sure any true gamers (although probably not fanboys) would buy a PS3 to give one of the best games of all time another go with better graphics.

Why did Uncharted and MGS4 look magnificent in lush jungle settings? Did Gears have lush environments with tons of organics? No! For that matter, does any 360 exclusive feature lush organic environments? No. You’re really making incredibly thin arguments here. DVD is the 360’s albatross. There is not enough storage space available to get these kinds of amazing graphics.
Also how long was the campaigns for COD4, Gaylo 3, GOW1 & 2? They were all about 10 hours long – and so is KZ2.
You should just admit that you are jealous you are missing KZ2 and your console and format of choice is outdated.

killzone 2 is 6 hours if you run through it on the easiest difficulty… im about 12 hours in (died a shit load) to the hardest one you can start with.
COD4 story, though decent had one mission where you basicly crawled the whole darn way and it just felt boring and drawn out… even though you can finish COD4 in one sitting, i was left wanting at the end of COD4 that the story was predictable, so far in KZ2 ive only predicted one thing (the whole thing with the new sun at the end, and i only guessed that at the start of that cut scene)
I’ve never played halo 3, i had sold my 360 before its launch, honestly guys how many hours is it? around 10? don’t bag out KZ2 for being “short” when two “bench marks” of FPS atm where around the same length…
i feel that we have all just been spoilded by the likes of fallout 3 (i know, not a FPS)

as i used to have a 360 i decoded to the best of my ability what lock_down was trying to say to the 360 fluffers (look it up if you dunno what a fluffer is) though seeing as i have sold mine some 2 years ago, i have lost my touch with the 360 talk.

Happyhockum, i was just saying about COD4 single player cause people had post before saying that MP shouldn’t be compaired when compairing th games which had me scratching my head to why COD4 would be a good game then.

OK so Everyone is hyping the Graphics in Killzone 2, but last night I checked out Halo Wars and dame that was the easiest RTS I was ever able to pickup and play. Usually I don’t get into these games but I found it so user friendly and fun to play. I can only imagine what a game like this must be like online. I’m putting my army up against your army and it probably comes down to whoever has the best strategy wins. I didn’t even touch on the graphics yet but they look awesome. I think I have slept on this game. This just got added to my list. Not even C&C was this easy to play.

Data on PC DVD’s are compressed. They are usually unpacked during installation. There’s other factors (video card, lowest resolution is equal to the norm for console games). Blur ray isn’t widespread enough in PC’s to have games come out on that format yet. It took a while for PC games to be on DVD and not a bunch of CD’s.

Yes. The 360s internal workings are more similar to a PC, but still the 360 is not a PC. I have been impressed with what M$ has managed to do with DVD9, but I think we’re starting to really see more examples of the advantage of the extra space which Blu-ray offers. Over the coarse of 2009 we will be seeing even more examples of this advantage with Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, and so on.

I guess only time will tell as to whether or not DVD is an albatross to the 360. There are games out there on more than one DVD. I have yet to see multi disc blu ray games.
Yes it was expensive, but as pointed out earlier (CAD,or harry?) the price of standalone players have dropped by so much since the tech is coming down in price.
Sony has more or less covered their bases by future proofing the PS3 with Blu ray. The billions lost will be made up in royalties.

Still not sure it cost Sony “Billions” to develop blu ray tech. A lot was done by Phillips. I’m well aware of the BDA. Sony is a founder and entitled to a higher royalty fee.

To be fair to Mr Pheonix, I’ve only completed/played Gears 2. Tried the first on PC and it just seemed like a waste of my time.
From what I could gather Mr P. seemed like the same old i’m a gruff badass i’ve seen in a zillion games, who was some kind of uber badass in a previous war (myabe spec ops, i dunno), oh and he has a mysterious daddy.

kev – I said I’ve completed the second one. Unless the marcus in the second game is not the same as in the first..dot (which i know he is).
But yes, you could say i’ve spent ‘no’ time with the game as it was very short (and repetative).

Milking franchises is a given with any game company/developer.
The problem is that the public demands it.
It is nice this gen we got some new titles that weren’t direct sequels.
Motorstorm, Bioshock, LBP, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Uncharted, and Infamous.
Of course once these games come out they spur sequels of their own.
I’m still annoyed that Call of Duty 4 modern combat is getting a sequel and they are not simply calling in Call of Duty 5. You must admit COD4 modern combat 2 sounds terrible. Kind of like Final Fantasy 10-2.

You gotta imagine Square Enix is pissed it was bought by MS for it’s exclusivity with Star Ocean 4.
With a Japanese install base of under 1 million and sales already trailing off after the initial 160K, followed by a sad 60K units pushed in NA they are going to have to release it on the PS3.
Which is all good and well, as I always believed it was a timed exclusive from the beginning like Bioshock.

harry, the story in killzone wasn’t all that bad, i like it better then COD4s, yeah it wasn’t the same as R2 which i really enjoyed… and cant in the single player be compaired to MGS4 in the slightest, but KZ2 isn’t about the single player, just like COD4 wasn’t, im just waiting for kev or one of the other 360ers to tell me that warhawk has the crappest single player game in history (i wonder how many people will get that
