Does the PS3 have the best controls for Street Fighter IV?
Street Fighter IV is the latest iteration to the highly acclaimed series. Due to the nature of the genre, one of the most important factors in playing the game is the controls. To make life easier for everyone, I decided to do a bit of research as to which controls are the best for Street Fighter IV.
Arcade
I had the opportunity to play SFIV on a nice 32-inch arcade screen while I was up in New York City. This was at the Fair Arcade, which is apparently one of the few locations on the east coast with a legal arcade unit.
The arcade unit was as responsive as I expected. The moves did seem a bit harder to execute after a long slumber on the home console gamepad. However, after a few hours I was kicking butt like there was no tomorrow. The stick was very responsive with the right amount of weight placed on it.
Xbox 360 & PS3
As expected, SFIV is frustratingly difficult to play on the Xbox 360’s gamepad. It was difficult to execute some of the moves that require precise angle movements on the Dpad. It was much easier to execute the moves on the DS3 controller for the PS3. For those hard pressed with the controls there are mods out there that will allow you to convert a PS3 controller to use on the Xbox 360.
There is also another alternative with the licensed Mad Catz Fightsticks. These sticks are costly, but may be worth picking one up to simulate the arcade experience. According to Destructoid, the Xbox 360 Fightstick will run you $79.99 (correction) and PS3 Fightstick will run you $69.99. Apparently the price difference is due to the licensing costs between the platforms.
Check out Destructoid’s play test using the Fightstick. Interestingly enough, it seems like they were not all that impressed with the Fightsticks in comparison to the gamepads.
Final Verdict
I would have to say the best controls are still at the arcades. However, for the home consoles I would recommend gamers to play this one on the PS3 if you have the option. Check out our review of Street Fighter IV tomorrow.

Many tears cried for those who buy street fighter IV on 360. Many tears. For they did not know they wouldn’t be able to do moves of any kind.

well… after playing it on the PSN last night… I GOT DISCONNECTED EVERY OTHER FIGHT!!! WTF!!!
this street fighter is so SLOOOWW!!!! this is more like tekken fighter rather than ssfthd… I HATE IT!!!
dualshock 3 was great on hd remix… now with the slow pace… its like the controls are laggy… maybe because Im “button mashing”…

Any 360 fan should know better by now. You almost have no other choice but to get the arcade stick if you have that version.

I can’t say that I’ve been having problems performing any moves on my 360 pad. I guess I must have magic fingers…. well that’s what the ladies say anyway.

Hmm, 360 just outsold the Wii in Japan. Holy crap!

Star Ocean 4 helped boost sales (feb 16-22).
Things will be back to normal once last weeks sales come out. Yakuza 3 came out and sold 230K in its first day.

well harry… you wont have any problems pulling off the moves that require quarter circles… the charge moves are harder to pull of with the 360 d pad… but whether you enjoy it with a 360 pad, a dualshock 3 or an arcade stick
THE GAME STILL SUCKS!!!
I hate you capcom… you nerfed my favourite character… WHY VEGA WHYYY!!! is it because he is spanish and you hate spanish people?? I shouldve known from resident evil 4…
assholes…

Other than the lack of Spanish people… is the game good? Looks like the reviews have been great so far.
Also does anyone have Star Ocean? I flipped through the strategy guide while I was at GameStop. It looks like it’s probably really good.

“John Dimaggo is not only the lead character in Gears of War, but also Kimahri and Wakka in Final Fantasy X and Bender in Futurama.”
Just found that quite interesting.
I’ll go again now.

DWH,
If you were expecting to be able to just take your SSF2THDR skillz into SF4 and still be good, then you deserve to suck. They’re different games, so you have to learn what’s different and adapt.
Personally, I think this game is MUCH better than HD Remix and the online has even run much smoother for me.

Ivan, Lol actually the petition was a joke. I just can’t figure out how to get to the page to edit my information.
March 3rd, 2009
I was wondering when someone was going to notice my link. hehe
DWH, I agree. I haven’t played a great deal of it, but when I have been i’ve basically been Ryu or Ken, I guess because it harks back to the golden days of the SF2 arcade where 40 cents would last you about 30 minutes…

fighters arn’t really my thing, though tekken tag was about the only one i really got into, i thought that the D-pad on the 360 was like trying to get blood from a stone when playing fighters?
March 3rd, 2009
Juice… ummm well… I dont know how to say this to you… but… well… sigh… never mind… why bother…
Arvis… I spent a LOT of time on SSFHDR… I never even played street fighter before that… and so yeah… Im pissed that this game is more like Tekken Fighter… or Street Calibur… that classic Street Fighter…
its gonna take a while… I just got the game yesterday… Im happy as long as I can get the trophy for 10 ranked wins in a row…
March 3rd, 2009
mick, don’t believe everything you hear…..
March 3rd, 2009
you can get blood from a stone?
March 3rd, 2009
The newer d-pad isn’t supposed to be that bad, anything falcon and before is terrible imo, push left, it goes right (well its not that bad!)…
I think the PS3 d-pad is the pinnacle of d-paddery.
March 3rd, 2009
hahaha I just signed your petition
March 4th, 2009
Harry, I can’t view your link. It’s blocked under “sex”. Thanks for the signature. Every one counts. I did actually laugh out loud at the note you left.
Now that I have a small handful of signatures maybe I’ll send my petition to Microsoft. I would love to see there reply that.

P.S. DWH, if you can get good at HD Remix (which you did, btw) then you can easily be just as good, if not better, at SF4. Just stick with it like you did HDR.

Question to all 360 fans out there……
Which controller do you feel is better for fighters?
PS3 or 360?
Every one of you at least had a ps1 or ps2 so you know….
honesty.
March 4th, 2009
For my favourite characters, the 360 controller, as it’s easy to do the semi circle, quarter circle, half circle and full circle moves. I can hadoken the living crap out of anyone with the 360 controller.
Had SF2 on my old PS1, found it harder to do on the PS1 controller than it is on the 360.
March 4th, 2009
What you really need is a worn PS1/2/3 controller. Where the ‘grain’ on the dpad is gone, super slick for circle motions.
A little KY would probably help too…
March 4th, 2009
Good idea, but I left my bottle of KY at Ivan’s house.
March 5th, 2009
and he left it up kevs ass.
My experience from with the 360 controller was with Dead or Alive 4.
