Even Sony’s fav studio wants a price cut for the PS3

March 14, 2009

Even Sony's studio wants a price cut for the PS3 It seems like just about everyone wants Sony to drop the price of the PS3. Even Microsoft expressed interest in seeing Sony drop the price. The execs at Sony have already indicated plans to ride things out until the PS3 can turn a profit. It seems like the developer of LittleBigPlanet won’t mind seeing a price drop on the PS3 as well.

Currently the PS3 retails for $400, the same as the Xbox 360 elite. However, unlike the Xbox 360 the PS3 doesn’t come in any cheaper configuration than the $400 priced model. However, even though the Xbox 360 Elite costs $400, there is a cheaper configuration that costs $200 with no hard drive and accessories found in the Elite model.

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg even took jabs at Sony a couple months ago by questioning why the company has yet to drop the price of the PS3. He even went on to predict that Sony will be dropping the price very soon. It seemed like a shallow move on Greenberg’s part considering Microsoft’s history with the original Xbox and manufacturing issues.

Another voice to join the growing chorus of those looking forward to a PS3 price cut is Alex Evans, one of the brilliant minds behind LittleBigPlanet. LittleBigPlanet sold over 2 million units, which is pretty stellar. The game has garnered many awards and respect from the video game community.

Evans indicated that he is comfortable with the PS3 price as it is now, but he also indicated that he is also looking forward to a price drop. According to Gamasutra, Evans stated, “As they do that, I’ll be very happy with that, because that’s how I see PS3 growing. That’s why I’m kind of comfortable with it for now… As soon as they drop their price, ho ho ho.”

Could Evans be hinting to a price drop around Christmas with his “ho ho ho” comment? I highly doubt Evans or any third party developer has any clue as to Sony’s pricing strategy. However, it seems Evans is 100 percent behind the PS3 and feels confident that it can become the universal gaming device the PS2 was.

He also stated, “They’ve had all these, you know, SingStars and the EyeToy games. They’ve had their casual gaming audience on the PS2, and they have to translate that over to PS3 now.”

Will Sony drop the price of the PS3 soon? I highly doubt it. As I wrote in a previous article, Sony seems extremely dedicated to breaking even on the PS3. You have to remember Microsoft discontinued the Xbox for the same reason Sony is facing with the PS3. However, unlike Microsoft Sony is not planning on discontinuing the system but overcoming the manufacturing costs.

I already have a PS3. So a price drop would benefit me in no way at all.
Do whatever you want with the price Sony. Just make sure to keep the quality games coming.

    On a completely different topic:

I just read an article that Sony had to pull a bunch of Kz2 ads cuz they resembled the war in Iraq. Apparently, a fourth grade teacher complained that the kids were fwightened when they saw the horrible posters.

WTF! Since when the hell does Iraqi soldiers have red eyes?? I know they are Iraqi’s but they are Human Beings or at the very least look more like Humans than Helghasts.

They even said that “the images of war-torn Helghan look “like Iraq”. “. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHA

Now, I’ve never been to Iraq but I’m thinking of going there. It sounds like that place is “outta this world”.

    Dubble the fun.

Sony have themselves in a bind, wanting to be profitable whilst needing to appeal to a broader audience and gain userbase and marketshare in the long term.

PS3’s high hardware costs are a bottleneck, almost as if no-one at Sony had a cost-reduction plan back when they were designing the thing, too busy revving the hype machine and putting all the eggs in one basket?

I bet Microsoft and Nintendo are only too happy with PS3’s current pricing.

  3. Happyhockum:

I don’t know where you do your shopping but the Xbox Elite is not $400.

I paid £135/$188US/$287AUS for my brand new one just over a week ago.

  4. phranctoast:

Amazon has it at 399. You got your elite cheaper than the arcade?

  5. Happyhockum:

The Arcade in the UK is £129/$180US/$274AUS.

Yeah, £135 for a new Elite.
    It was easy.
Littlewoods Direct had them at £179/$249US/$380AUS.
£30/$41US/$63AUS off for brand new customers & a further 10% off for Quidco.

    (Why not?
If the PS3 support here can regularly come in & rant on and on about a deal with a credit card.
This at least is so much more easy to do and doesn’t result in trying to get a new credit card, what with credit being harder to come by these days)

I’ve just looked, they’re no longer at £179/$249US/$380AUS on the Littlewoods site.
    , they’re now £189/$264US/$401AUS.

  6. me_:

Is the only difference between the arcade and elite the HDD, head set and cables?

  7. Happyhockum:

The big deal really is the 120gb HDD
(and for those of us who have to have black kit it’s so much nicer than a black skin).

It was cheaper for me to buy a new Elite and flog my 5mth old 60gb Pro (and the data transfer cable they sent me free, a handy little ebay item) than buy the 120gb HDD seperately.

I was using HDMI anyways so the Elite cable means nothing to me (might ebay that too).

  8. CON:

All consoles get the headset and a free trial of LIVE

  9. yamumsawersome:

    what for?
last time i checked the elite still has no WI-FI
    thats an extra $120 AU.
plus at the moment theres no bundels with the elite its 700AU for the console and console only.
where the 80GB ps3 is the same price comes with HDMI cable 2 PS3 games of choice and an extra Dualshock 3 controller, both JBhi-fi, EB, gamesmen and Game have these deals.
if anything the elite needs to have a price drop.
the arcade is dirt cheap 400AU pro is 500 AU so why the hell am i paying an extra 200AU just for a extra 60GB of storage space MR greenberg maybe you can explain that for me.
    last time i checked laptop HDDs 500GB for 120AU not 120GB 200AU

  10. yamumsawersome:

if anything the games and guides need to be cheaper.
120AU for a game is a complete fricken rip off.
last time i checked 50-60 US does not equal 110-120 AU.
and the guides are 50 AU thats almost half of the fricken game.
the consoles can be dear as poison does not matter because your only buying it once per 4-5 years atleast you would hope.
but the games well every game you want it adds up verry quickly im working just to play the games i want to its pethetic

  11. hamburger:

Australia is one of the worst places for gamers.
Not only is pricing ridiculous but also the stupid thing they do when they censor games. Remember GTA IV??

  12. Happyhockum:

    yamumsawersome

You don’t need the ‘official’ wireless connection.

You can either hook up with a wired connection for pennies or use an old spare wireless router (something more and more people have).

“He even went on to predict that Sony will be dropping the price very soon. It seemed like a shallow move on Greenberg’s part considering Microsoft’s history with the original Xbox and manufacturing issues.”

He’s merely echoing the rest of the industry. How that’s a shallow move is beyond me, but then again, this is a FERRO post, logic has no home here.

  14. ncaissie:

    @hamburger
Your wrong. A high price does affect you.
If they drop the price they sell more consoles and the third party devs will start making games for it.

  15. kev:

i wonder when mike and dave will post the “the ps3 is popular with child molesters” article….

    http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/sony-ps3-namechecked-in-child-porn-case-585319

anyone want to bet they won’t do an article on it like they did with the 360?

can they really call themselves objective if they ignore this? let’s see, shall we.

on a similar note, darkwhitehair will be happy. he seems to favor the pedos….

  16. Barnabe Jones:

I agree with NCassie… I won’t see a penny of the money they make, but if the PS3 can do better it can only be a benefit to PS3 owners. More units sold = more clout with developers = more exclusives and other perks.

  17. harry sachz:

    @ kev,

I tried posting something similar, linking a Kotaku post, however it seems that the moderator didn’t like what I was saying and deleted it.

Talk about putting your hands over your ears and screaming LALALALALALALA I AM NOT LISTENING!

  18. phranctoast:

I didn’t know you had a ps3 and ps3 eye kev. Congrats!!! Better hide those pics.

  19. kev:

you heard it first hear folks. the devlopers of lbp are sony’s favorite.

too bad for Kaz and GT5…
