2009 is year of PSP not Xbox 360 or PS3: new lineup to have GTA and Oblivion?

March 15, 2009

2009 is year of PSP not Xbox 360 or PS3: new lineup to have GTA and Oblivion? There are many gamers going around the Web indicating that 2009 is the year of the PS3 or Xbox 360. However, another platform that many gamers have undermined may be picking up steam to take over 2009. According to reports PSP may have an awesome lineup in store for 2009 with unrevealed titles as well as existing franchises.

The PSP is one platform that many gamers overlook as a contender in the gaming device arena. The PSP truly is a portable multimedia device considering you can play games, watch movies and listen to music all from a single device. However, gamers have been complaining about the lackluster lineup in 2008. The PSP lineup did start spectacularly with titles such as Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and God of War: Chains of Olympus, but quickly died down near the last quarter.

Sony execs have admitted that the game release pacing for the PSP in 2008 was poorly planned and promised that the lineup will be three times better in 2009. According to John Koller, Sony’s director of hardware marketing, 2008 was the best year for the PSP. Apparently the PSP sold 31 percent more year-over-year. However, something tells me Final Fantasy and God of War really deserve the credit for this sales boost.

It seems like the brains at Sony got together 16 months ago to try to resolve the PSP game lineup issue. Koller stated, “We talked with each of our internal developers and looked at all of our franchises and asked: How can you create them for PSP?” The games that resulted from the meeting so far include: Resistance: Retribution, MotorStorm Arctic Edge and a portable LittleBigPlanet.

It seems like third party publishers have jumped on board, taking advantage of the PSP as well. There is a new Assassin’s Creed and Rock Band game planned for the PSP this year. Monster Hunter Portable is slated to hit the US sometime this year as well. The game that I am still waiting for is Elder Scroll Travels: Oblivion for the PSP. It doesn’t seem like the game is canceled but it has been two years since anything has been announced. Metacritic recently updated the release date for the game to November 2009, so it doesn’t look like its completely canceled.

Koller also indicated that the lineup for 2009 could be 50 percent more than that of 2008. He also teased that there are major franchises yet to be announced. I recently talked about a new rumor pointing to a new Grand Theft Auto game for the PSP. It seems like this could become a reality with Sony hinting at a few unannounced big franchises coming this summer. Make sure to keep your ear to the ground for more information on upcoming games.

  1. me_:

And the DS will still kill it in sales.

  2. SW:

And people who, you know, just enjoy playing the games, really won’t give a fuck what sells more…

“The PSP is one platform that many gamers overlook as a contender in the gaming device arena.”

Which is why 2009 will not be ‘the year of the PSP’.

SW you can hardly knock the guy for pointing out that of the handhelds the DS is by far the more popular device when Mike’s proclaiming the PSP as this year’s big deal.

    The PSP is old.
I know people with them and they do tend to love them but they leave so many of the rest of us totally cold.
    More Sony expensive-for-what-it-is nonsense.
(and another one they put a daft movie format into and saw bomb)

Hmmmm. Mike seemed to overlook this little story, however has no problem posting ones about this type of thing happening on Xbox Live….

  5. me_:

The NeoGeo had some great games too. It really didn’t matter though because nobody bought them.

  6. SW:

Well happy, my point is. Who really cares?

As long as there are enough sale to justify software developers creating more games then who gives a hoot?

So yep, he/she can say ‘The DS is pounding the PSP’. But if I saw one game I REALLY wanted to play for PSP, I’d still go out and buy the damn thing.

For the record I don’t own either.

It just gets annoying when people say ‘hey this is going to have a great lineup this year’ (and as I understood the article, it just says ‘hey psp’s lineup last year sucked, this year it should better’) and then someone just HAS to turn around and say ‘Well its still going to get butt fuxx0red by ‘ especially if product X wasn’t mentioned. Not once.

  7. SW:

Should be : ‘butt fuxx0red by product X’

Stupid tag removing!! *shakes fist at blorge*

  8. darkwhitehair:

ohhh Mike… something tells me you’ve been waiting for a long time to use that picture…

sigh… if the rumors of the PSP2 are real… Im going to have a tough time choosing between the 360 and a PSP2…

  9. lock_down:

The girl in that picture looks like she enjoys being butt fuxx0red.

  10. chillyfish:

You lost me at “2009 is year of…” :o p

PSP, is that thing still around?

Isnt it well established the the platform has sod all worthwhile software, is hobbled by crappy UMD power drain and is soon to be superseded anyway?

(PSP has had and will continue to have) its butt fuxx0red by product (DS).

  11. Royzy:

The UMD thingy for PSP is douchey, hence why I never bought one.

  12. Royzy:

Can you use the PSP as SatNav yet?

  13. ncaissie:

I had one and I played my games from MS.
I still sold it and bought a DS.

How many times does it need to be said? Games don’t sell consoles, but a lot of good games will.
Just like the PS3 and 360 Vs Wii. It’s the casual games that sell the DS and the Wii.
The Hard core gamers have the PSP, 360 and PS3s already.

There are plenty of casual gamers still to buy and they will not be buying PSPs.
I switched to the DS because there are more games and the games can be played over and over.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

I own both the DS and PSP. However, I have been playing my DS more mainly due to FF IV. I don’t have much portable gamming time to spend in the first place, but I’m about 35 hours in and still have a lot more to go. I’m trying to not buy anther PSP or DS game until I have that completed. I might pick up War of the Lions when I’m done.

  15. hamburger:

Just install Dark Alex’s custom firmware on your PSP and download the games from the internet, copy them to your mem. card and play.

I know piracy is wrong and all that crap but think about it. You’re set on “Not Buying a PSP”, so technically you’re not hurting sony. Infact you’re doing them a favour by increasing their PSP sales figures although not the software sales.

P.S, I don’t think installing Custom Firmware is even piracy. You can install whatever the hell you want in your PsP with just the risk of losing warrenty. Although downloading .iso images of games may be piracy.

  16. DavidB:

How many times will you Blorge people flog this “year of” crap? Get on with it.
