GDC 09: Metal Gear on Xbox talk and COD: Modern Warfare 2 revealed

March 25, 2009

GDC 09: Metal Gear multiplatform rumor and COD: Modern Warefare 2 revealed With GDC in progress, many stories are swirling around and it has become difficult to decipher what is true and what is not. An interesting rumor that has been picking up steam revolves around the next Metal Gear game releasing on multiple platforms. Also COD: Modern Warfare 2 has been confirmed.

During the GDC Awards ceremony, LittleBigPlanet unsurprisingly took the vast majority of the awards home. Fallout 3 did get the GOTY award which it definitely deserves. Attendees were treated to a little surprise trailer at the end of the awards when they were shown the first Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer.

Everybody suspected that this game would be announced at GDC. The game was officially revealed tonight near the end of the show. It is not certain if Infinity Ward, the developers, will be utilizing the same engine or using a brand new engine for the game. Regardless of what engine, the game will surely be phenomenal. The game is set to release November 10, 2009.

A rumor that has been picking up steam is around the next Metal Gear game. Kojima has hinted at the new game he is currently working on during the conference. However, he also indicated that it will be revealed during E3 officially. Some of the talk around GDC points to Metal Gear going multiplatform on the Xbox 360. Some of the speculation point towards a MGS 5, a port of MGS 4, or a spin-off Metal Gear game (not “Solid”).

If this does come to pass, I would not be surprised at all. There is no obligation preventing Kojima or Konami from releasing the game on the Xbox 360. There is no iron-clad Microsoft-like contract with Sony, so the publisher could do whatever they wanted to do.

I have indicated in the past that the eventual progression of the game industry is leaning towards third party developers releasing games on multiple platforms. I predict that Metal Gear, Gears of War and Mass Effect will eventually find homes on multiple platforms. Mark my words.

No way in hell is MGS4 porting to the xbox… theres just too much work involved. but MGS5 i say theres 90% chance it’ll come. Why waste the resource to port an old game rather than build a new one?

Scenes like snake using a ps3 controller will need to be changed.
The joke where Octacon jokes that theres no need to switch disc because its blu-ray needs to be edited.
    and much much more…

  2. lock_down:

And don’t forget Sixaxis to jiggle Rose’s tits…that’ll need to go…

  3. Mike Ferro:

Ratchet & Clank game practically confirmed! Will update you guys very soon.

    @godsman & lock_down,

I agree, it’s probably not practical to port MGS4 over… consensus seems to be that it will be a spinoff MG (minus “Solid”) title… maybe Raiden is the main character?

I am not sure if there will be a MGS5 game any time soon.

  4. Bourne:

I think it’s too late for MGS4, but i think MGS5 will be multiplat, i’d be surprised if it wasn’t because of the demand.

Disappointed that something won’t be announced at GDC but what you gonna do, Kojima is a perfectionist.

  5. phranctoast:

Ratchet and Clank game was confirmed with the release of Quest for Booty.

This looks to be a great Fall/Winter!

  6. Barnabe Jones:

Everything we are hearing about the Metal Gear franchise is still just rumors and speculation at this point. I would bet that the next release will be multiplatform. Konomi doesn’t really have too much else going for it. It makes sense that they would try to make as much money from the MGS franchise as possible.

  7. CAD:

    Gears Multiplatfor!!! NEVERRRRR!!!!!!!!

  8. CAD:

Or Mass Effect. They are both on the Microsoft Games Studios List.

  9. Barnabe Jones:

Just like Ninja Gaiden 2 I might add….

  10. CAD:

Yeah that is why they call it Sigma. A downgraded version. If it was anything like the first Sigma then that is what I Expect.

  11. phranctoast:

oh please elaborate on that CAD.

How was Sigma downgraded at all?

  12. SW:

    Because its not on xbox…

  13. kev:

this can’t happen. ALLLL the sony fanboys SWORE no Metal Gear game would ever be on the 360…. i think mike and dave did too…..

meh…. it would be funny if it did..

i can almost see Ivan spontaneously combust at the launch….

that, alone, would be worth it…

  14. Barnabe Jones:

No. We swore MGS 4 wouldn’t be ported down to a 5 disc set for the 360, which it hasn’t. MGS5 could be multiplatform, but would have to be designed with that in mind before hand. Hopefully the series quality will not suffer as a result.

  15. kevo:

Dear God, let gears come to ps3….

  16. SW:

    bleh.

OK Downgraded is a little harsh. Go Play Ninja Gaidan Black and then play Sigma and notice how even though there is a graphical improvement in the game that it looked very close to the Black version on the original Xbox. There were screen shots that I looked at back then that showed that at times the xbox was sporting better graphics. There are things missing that are present in the Black Version. For example right from the very start there is a river and that river in not in Sigma. That is why I said Downgraded.

  18. CAD:

I wouldn’t mind if Gears came to the PS3 but only on 1 condition. That we could play each other online because I would love to shoot some of you.

  19. phranctoast:

The only downgrade it was missing is extras. Black had the arcade version of NG.
Sigma added a Horde type battle royale.

It would be nice if 360 players could play PC players in Gears. I understand how maybe cross platform is frowned on with 360-ps3, but 360 to PC should be a no brainer.

  20. Barnabe Jones:

I played through both Black and Sigma… Sigma also had the beginning cut scene removed also, which is weird. I’ve never played both side by side… but when I bought the game, the kid behind the counter at the store said he did just that. And he said Sigma looked better… true story.

  21. Arvis:

    CAD,

“There were screen shots that I looked at back then that showed that at times the xbox was sporting better graphics.”

I remember those screenshots. You know they were proven to be fakes, right? No one with a working brain thinks ANY part of Sigma looks worse than Black.

    -Arvis

  22. CAD:

Yeah Right!!! They were fake? Proove it. That is probably the reason I can’t find it. But how could they be fake. The character always had more detail then the xbox version. It was just the backgrounds that were better and more detailed.

  23. Arvis:

    CAD,

Seriously, I’m not trying to argue with you or make fun of you. Just play Sigma, then play Black. It’s unabashedly INSANE to think that there is ANY real comparison between the two, graphically.

Even in smaller images, the difference is obvious…

  24. harry sachz:

There is already a cross PC/360 online game, Shadowrun.

Also I am pretty sure that Champions Online is going to be cross platform too.

  25. phranctoast:

FF11 works with ps2,360, and PC.

  26. phranctoast:

Sigma also pushes twice the resolution of Ninja Gaiden 2. So if you want to get technical…..It looks better.

Sigma 2 will fix all the things that got in the way of NG2 scoring over a 9.

  27. Barnabe Jones:

No! Not twice the resolution… Blu-ray is bad because… that’s what we’ve been brainwashed into thinking.
