GDC 09: Xbox 360 gets nothing new while PS3 gets new MGS and Ratchet game
The Game Developers Conference is winding down and all has not been lost as several new games have been announced. The conference for the most part was made up of sessions where developers shared new insight into best practices into game development. Surprisingly Microsoft’s camp stayed fairly quiet, while Sony’s side was making a bit of ruckus with a tease of a Metal Gear game from Kojima and a new Ratchet & Clank announcement.
Hideo Kojima, the genius behind the Metal Gear games was the keynote speaker at the GDC. Kojima was presented with the lifetime award from GDC, which is the prestigious award honoring those who have made significant contributions to the game industry. Let’s face it, not too many individuals can actually take credit for creating a genre.
Kojima wanted to share his 20 some plus years of experience in the game industry by describing his journey as a game developer. He also shared his development methodology as well as shed some light on future ideas. The keynote speech ended with a stunning statement – Mission: The Next MGS.
Next to the caption there was a small picture of Raiden. As I speculated yesterday, this could mean that Kojima may make a new iteration or spin-off with Raiden as the main character.
Another new game that was revealed was the next installment in the Ratchet & Clank franchise. Frankly, I am extremely anxious to play the next installment in the series. Questions such as what happens to Clank has been keeping me on edge for sometime. I am also looking forward to seeing the silly Captain Qwark, who is always trying to play the hero while messing things up again.
I was surprised that Microsoft didn’t make much noise during GDC. The Twitter for the Official Xbox Magazine indicated that some cool stuff would be shown day two of GDC. However, nothing was really shown during the conference from Microsoft’s side. Let me be clear here, just because nothing new was shown at GDC for the Xbox 360 doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything in the pipeline. I can only assume that the secret good stuff will be saved for E3 later this year. I am looking forward to at least checking out some Alan Wake gameplay. Gamers can now mark their calendars for E3 which takes place in two full months.

Confirmed: Alan Wake is vaporware. Well I guest there’s always hope that MG5 will be multiplatform, right? lol
Now that Raiden is a cyber-ninja, I think a game with him as the lead would be awesome. I’m thinking a cross between MGS4 and Ninja Gaiden.

Did Kojima specifically mention that the new MGS will be a ps3 exclusive? Cuz, from your article, it just sounds like he announced the next MGS and there’s no mention of the platform.
Nevertheless, as long as its on the Ps3, I’m happy!!
And I also disagree with your argument that the 360 might’ve some secret game in the pipeline. Cuz, if they did have something for this year, they would’ve shown it by now. They’ll probably show off Mass Effect 2 at E3. It’ll be as pathetic as last year when they only got to show off a stolen exclusive from Sony (FF-XIII).

If Kojima screws up by sacrificing the quality of MGS just because the 360 is underpowered, I’m going to KILL HIM!!!
Look what M$ did to FF-XIII. If it was a Ps3 exclusive, it would’ve been released a loooooooooooooong time ago. The fans are the ones who are suffering cuz of M$ and their inability to produce their own games even though they are a software company.
Lets all pray to our Gods that Kojima does not go over to the dark side like Square Enix.

If M$ had a stolen exclusive they would mention it ASAP. They would not wait until it’s less than a year a way. Look how early the GTA4 announcement came prior to its release, and FF13 comes to mind as well.
M$ would want any potential PS3 buyers to buy the 360 for that said exclusive so it hurts them more to not announce it early.

Arvis, I totally agree. While I do love Ratchet & Clank, it was already announced. Maybe it was “officially announced”, but we all knew about it. I was expecting a much bigger revelation. Oh well, we have ICO and Metal Gear now to look forward to for E3 (which should be better).
As far as MGS, I think Mike may have jumped the gun with implying that it is a PS3 exclusive… Everything is still just rumors and speculation at this stage. All we’ve seen so far is a small silhouette of Radien in a Power Point….. Which is more than we saw of Alan Wake. Hey Ho!

I agree with you.
The whole S-E thing though is a bit different. S-E has LOST a lot of “respect” as a gaming company because of its back door deals with Microsoft.
How so? Because at the end of every FF13 trailer the “only on Playstation3″ logo was spouted, by S-E themselves, now they try to spin it as ” it was meant only exclusive in japan”. That is total bullshit.
If S-E had been upfront about it, it would have been still a big bomb, but not nearly as big, and “respect” would not have been lost.
Heres the thing. Business is business, and smart business if fine. BUT, keep the business/political end of the video game industry in the shade. Don’t bring it up to the light. It’s one thing, guessing its all about the money, its a whole other thing KNOWING it was only about the money.
If a company gets the perception of ‘being just about money’ that company no longer has “respect” and is viewed no longer as ” damn S-E, yeah they innovate and make great games”. They are now simply viewed as any other “greedy corporation”. See the difference?
No, the original move from Nintendo to Sony is NOT the same thing. It was NOT about the money. It was about wanting to have a “medium ( CD Drive ) in which to deliver their vision to its fullest”. Sure it MIGHT have been about the money, but, they kept that in the background where it belongs and now the perception is one of a creative difference, so to this day that deal is all about wanting a medium that allows them to deliver their vision.<===See the difference?
This deal was simply “all about the money” and that my friends is what really bothers people. That and they blatantly lied about the exclusivity in the first place, to deny this FACT is to be stupid, they did advertise FF13 as PS3 Exclusive. Period.
It’s like having a favorite underground hip hop artist/band talk trash about the mainstream and whatnot, and then “selling out” and becoming the same thing they ranted about.<==again i hope you guys see what im trying to say.
Keep the political part of the video game market in the background, that way you can say how much of an innovative company you are and heck we will believe you and support you.
BUT, bring those politics to the forefront, and you then become what gamers hate most: A “greedy, all about the money, corporation”.

Square Enix has lost a lot of cred with me this gen regardless of the multiplatform FF13. There whole “western focused” game, The Last Reminate stunk. Now they are opening up a new studio in LA just to try to cater to the western market. Expanding the company’s types of games is all well and good… but they shouldn’t loose focus on creating top quality JRPGs which there fans love and want.
Capcom on the other hand, has gained a lot of points in my book.

E3 is there for the Microsoft Announcements… and TGS is there for the Sony Announcements…
