Why it is likely Sony will drop the PS3 price Tuesday
According to reports, Sony has some big news planned for this Tuesday. Many have started to speculate what the news could be about. The most popular theory revolves around a price drop to the PS3. With all of Sony’s ducks in a row, this might be the perfect time to actually drop the price of the PS3.
Dave Reeves, head honcho of Sony Europe, previously indicated that the execs at Sony got together last March to decide on a pricing strategy for the PS3. What came out of that meeting was the decision to hold steadfast on any PS3 price drops until they became profitable on the manufacturing cost of the PS3.
I took a look at Sony’s financial statement last December and pointed out that Sony must be extremely close to breaking-even from the fact that the operating loss was dramatically reduced. A tear-down analysis from iSuppli last December confirmed my suspicion.
If Sony has managed to reach profitability, then there is a good chance a price drop could be on the way. According to Smart House, Sony will be making some sort of announcement this Tuesday. It has been about four months since we found out Sony was close to breaking-even. It is conceivable that costs have been reduced dramatically considering Sony’s plans to shrink the CPU die once again.
If you look at everything going on for Sony this may be the best time to drop the price of the PS3. Currently, Sony has a great lineup and with the state of the economy, a price drop could potentially help the PS3 immensely. Also, if Sony has reached profitability with the PS3, then the original goal has been met as well. However, I do have some reservations as to if a price drop will actually help sell the PS3s around this time of the year. A price cut closer to E3 or Christmas would be the best move for Sony.

I thought he was physically incapable of handling the machine? Didn’t he get burns on his hands last time he tried?

why Sony will drop the PS3 price by tommorow and kill bill gates… why? I dont know… but it JUST MIGHT happen… if I truly believe in myself…
March 30th, 2009
Don’t get too excited guys, it might be just nothing. It could be an announcement to the new firmware or a new game/IP.
Sony wouldn’t announce anything related to hardware price cut at GDC because its really meant for the developers to discuss about software etc… Thats why Sony and Microsoft did not hold a press conference at GDC.

ITS THE PRICE DROP OF THE PS2… and if gawd forbid… if they put BC on the PS3… as mike and dave as my witness… I am going to take a can of gasoline and set Kutaragi on fire… as self-immolation… an ancient asian form of protest…
also… March 31… 1 day before April fools day bitches… FUCK YOU SONY! I want my fucking BC
March 30th, 2009
sony saying no more ps2 in future plus BC in ps3 around a price cut around christmas?? Sounds smart to me…
March 30th, 2009
I welcome it, doesn’t have to make sense, besides everyones crying out for a PS3 price drop so (if it’s true) lap it up don’t question it.
Personally i hope it’s a new game or something.

We’re in dire need of new firmware after 2.60 did sweet FA…hopefully that will be part of it.
A price drop for the PS2 would be no bad thing…means I can get new one. My launch PS2 is still going, albeit sounding a little sick.

I heard they’re announcing Noby Noby Boy 2 – Noby Gets A Blowjob.
March 30th, 2009
E3 is in June this year, right? I would think they would hold off for the two months and wait for a bigger stage to make the announcement of a price drop. If they’ve waited this long, they can hold out for two more months.
Supposedly firmware 2.7 will be a significant update. Maybe they’ll announce it tomorrow and release it this Thursday… I wouldn’t get my hopes up for a new IP or price drop.

“In Australia, the PS3 is among the most expensive of PS Consoles in the world with SEC Australia mid last year recommending a retail price that was $230 dearer than the same console in the USA”
Wow!
Aussies have it tough.
March 30th, 2009
DONT YOU DARE INSULT NOBY NOBY! He does NOT MASTURBATE! he eatz his own ass… COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

I’ve decided that I’m going to get NOBY NOBY. I’m just waiting until I’m drunk and/or high.

PS3 def needs to do something now that it’s been last for the last few years……..
March 30th, 2009
I think Sony should drop the price because CON commands it god damn it!
In more important news… I’m upgrading my HD tonight! My sweet 500 gig is waiting at the door for me. I already backed everything up to my ipod last night. The process is super quick and easy. So I should now have the biggest….. HD

I have about 2.3 TB of HDD space in my machine at home
Its amazing how fast you can fill it when you have a usenet account… All legit, of course…
March 30th, 2009
…. now I have storage envy…. I feel so… inadequate.
Reading about usenet now… very cool.
*waiting for back up to finish* I noticed that the Resident Evil save file was locked and not allowed to be copied. I’m not sure if that applies to backing up… If that’s the case stay tuned for my anti-Capcom tirade.

is RE5 worth getting?
March 31st, 2009
Hey Ferro, you were wrong. They aren’t dropping the PS3rd price, they can’t afford to. They need to milk the blood out of the PS2 to stay afloat.
March 31st, 2009
RE5 is good, but imo RE4 was better. RE5 has less puzzles and I prefered the atmosphere in RE4. They also stripped out alot of the ‘prep’ stuff. E.g. yellow herbs to increase health, weapon arrangement in your suitcase etc etc etc.
March 31st, 2009
Ok, so you can’t copy your save file to a USB, but backing it up is kosher.
I think the new inventory system works well for multipliable play throughs . I love the fact that you can finally assign hot keys. Juggling the other items on the fly also adds a bit strategy and skill. Overall the game is excellent. I think I also liked 4 more, but the new co-op feature more than makes up for the minor complaints I have.
March 31st, 2009
Eh. I preferred the attache case and moving with the d-pad. The Xbox has single-handedly killed d-pad movement in video games.

March 31st, 2009
Arvis, that’s b*llocks.
There’s nothing wrong with the Xbox d pad.
You just need to mod you controller very slightly.
Times running out for this ‘PS3 price cut on Tuesday’ guess, huh?
March 31st, 2009
arvis – you’re a joke. the dpad on the 360 is fine. then again, if you actually owned a 360 you’d know… oh well…you got to whine about something to try to make the ps3 look good, i guess….*sigh*
it’s funny tho; according to you;
1. the 360 is unrealiable
2. the 360 has no good exclusives
3. the dpad sucks.
and yet..it’s killing the ps3 in sales on a consistent basis….
doesn’t speak too highly of popular opinion of the ps3 now does it….
March 31st, 2009
M$ should make the controller not suck balls so you don’t need to mod it.
Why would you need to mod it if “There’s nothing wrong with the Xbox d pad.”?????
March 31st, 2009
Kev,
If I’m a joke, why aren’t you laughing?
Anyways, nobody sane actually thinks the d-pad on the 360 is “fine.” I guess all the TONS of people who think that are the same TONS of people who think Forza has MOAR FIZZICKS than Gran Turismo.
Either way, I got my hands on a 360 just long enough to play Mass Effect, which was awesome. Thankfully, the game only uses the SUPER SUCKY d-pad for dumb AI commands.

March 31st, 2009
The 360 dpad is terrible, utterly terrible. How you can say its fine/good is beyond me.
Reminds of those cheap autofire pads you used to be able to buy for the SNES.
March 31st, 2009
arvis – sorry, but 9,000 > 300… deal with it.
the dpad could use some work, but hardly worth calling “suck”….
March 31st, 2009
For those genuinely interested……
You just need to shave off a little of the plastic and reduce the thickness (by about 1/2) of the ‘plastic wall*’ surrounding the moving part of the dpad.
*Note this does not refer to the edge of the plastic ‘well’ the dpad sits in but the tall raised ‘wall’ which surrounds the dpad.
It takes about 2mins to do right with a decent sharp blade (contrary to some youtube guides…..which are useful in pointing out which bit you need to thin….. you do not need to dismantle the controller at all).
After that little bit of work is done the Xbox dpad is as good as anything out there.
So, yes, I think it’s fair to say that there is nothing wrong with it.
You just need to correct a slight moulding flaw.
No biggee*.
*unless you happen to be the sort of Xbox hating fanboy desperate to dredge up & exggerate any old sh*t to bash the console with.
March 31st, 2009
i didn’t know that, happy. thanks.
But i don’t think i’ll be doing it. I can’t see the big problem, the dpad works fine for me, and I am the type of person who dogs people with hadoukens in Street Fighter. God I hate people like me.
March 31st, 2009
You’re welcome.
If you ever feel the need don’t be afraid to give it a go Harry, it’s a lot easier than it might sound.
The alternative for real dpad mashing is the cheapo madcatz controller.
I had to look into it as my beloved Speedball2 wouldn’t respond properly and was driving me nuts.
Well and truly fixed now tho.
I did read that Microsoft were bringing out a new controller with the moulding fixed (for one of the PES games) and in green but that seems to have either not happened or passed me by.

arvis – everytime you bring up physics parameters you look silly. Kaz was the first to bring the parameter to light as the definition of what makes good sims. 300…he boasted….. until forza announced they had over 9,000…. i get it; this is over your head. Keep posting about it if you want, but you only look more silly by doing so.
April 2nd, 2009
Kev,
Why the second post when I ignored your first one? Do you REALLY want to keep talking about this?
Look, I’ve already shown you that Polyphony Digital has helped a real car company make a real car. I’ve already shown you that legitimate reviewers (Ars Technica) call the car handling in Forza ‘arcadey and lifeless.’ I’ve posted links and provided a valid contrasting viewpoint to everything you’ve ever said on this issue. You, however, are content to repeat yourself, like a child with his ears covered saying “I’m not listening” over and over.
Either post some relevant, factual articles on the subject, or I’m done discussing this with you. Your word and two undefined numbers do not make a valid argument.

no, arvis…PD helped design a DISPLAY for a car. it’s like saying the makers of the seatbelt latches (not made by Nissan) dictates they know more than automotive engineers about cars. simply not true. and they would be the first to tell you that. why do you ignore the engineers from Team Ferrari and Toyo Tires that helped design the physics engine for forza? does this fact confuse you?
Ars Technica was one site. since you like site quotes; why no comment on 1up.com’s statement that Forza is the new reigning king of physics over GT games…..?
it is you who are covering your ears in leiu of marketting spin, like helping create a heads up display for a car maker.
physics parameter calculations are paramount in sims, sport. Forza has over 9,000 while GT games at their highest has only achieved 300. deal with it.
everything about the physics parameters are searchable. Look for Dan Greenawalt quotes. Can’t get to them from work. too many firewalls.

*scanning above post*
Lessee, lessee… blatant and ignorant dismissal of valid point, repeat yourself, repeat yourself, repeat yourself. Not a single valid counterpoint or factual article. FAIL! Good day, sir, and enjoy your inferior product.

April 3rd, 2009
arvis – what “valid point”, arvis? that pd helped design a display for a car and that somehow makes them more knowledgeable about cars than automotive engineers from Ferrari and Toyo used in Forza?
April 3rd, 2009
arvis – someday, when you grow a pair, you’ll actually google the info i told you to. i told you why i can’t post articles at work, but the articles are there to be found. i know why you don’t…as it’s easier to believe in fantasy than admit the truth.. Forza > GT
