Sony: PS2 will eat into Wii sales from price drop

Sony: PS2 will eat into Wii sales from price drop Recently Sony dropped the bomb that the rumored price drop will finally happen for the PS2. This rumor has been in circulation for about a year now since last E3. With a price drop, will the budget system be able to eat away at the Wii’s sales?

The PS2 is the most successful console in the history of video gaming. It also has the largest library of games out of any console on the market, past or present. With a super low price of $99, some have started to speculate that there will be a nice uptake in the sales of the aging system.

I still have my original PS2 which is the fat version. The last game I played on it was Persona 4 a few months back. I still use the PS2 from time to time despite the fact that my 60GB PS3 can play just about every PS2 game out there. What can I say? The trip from my living room to my entertainment center in my basement can be laboring. I actually recently started thinking about buying the new slim model after hearing about the price drop so I can put one into my car.

According to Kotaku, John Killer, SCEA’s director of hardware marketing, recently stated that he feels that the PS2 still has opportunity to steal some sales from the Wii. I think he just may be right, albeit it will be a very small percentage. I’ve seen budget conscious parents zipping through Walmart with PS2s in-cart.

Seriously, what is a $100 when the annoying Tickle Me Elmo doll will run you $75? There are two types of parents out there – the type that gets plugged into what is hot out there like the Wii or the type that just wants to get their bratty kid something cheap to keep them quiet. I am sure that many of the parents out there will opt to go with the Wii but there will be some that will just get the PS2 instead.

Didn’t they say the same thing when the XBOX price dropped below the Wii?

  2. Happyhockum:

Yeah, just what they need to dig themselves out of their current financial hole.

    The future is the PS2!

(kind of surprising that they just chopped it’s profitability to pieces in the current climate tho)

Xbox Arcade now available for less than £73.60 (£109US/$153AUS), brand new and from a reputable retailer in the UK.

    (£129 less £50 code less 8% Quidco)

    Why bother with a PS2?

Mike, when was the last time you bought a PS2 Game?

They need to kill off the thing and concentrate on selling the PS3.

It’s too early to see how much this will increase ps2 sales. Lets talk about that next month.

Anyone want to try and find their profitability? (cant get to the # sites from work)

We need a worldwide total of sales for lets say the last six months. See how they are doing month to month.

Have to find out how much it costs Sony to manufacture the ps2.
You can figure out how it’s done.

Yeah bugger off the ps2 is tooooo old. Get rid of it and finally start concentrating on the ps3.

I really don’t think you should be selling two systems in the same generation. I suppose that they may be thinking that they will milk every dollar from the ps2 and while doing that, it gives a buffer zone to get the ps3 on it’s feet so that when the ps2 is finally killed off, the ps3 will start getting into profit … ???? Maybe the reason why they aren’t concerned and are quite happy for it to bubble along until it comes into it’s own ?? (hence no price drop)

Just putting something out there !!

Given the demand for it, it would be a huge mistake not to sell PS2 consoles anymore just because the PS3 is here. Obviously there are quite a number of people who don’t consider the PS2 too old. They have to satisfy that market demand. I would like to see the PS3 take off in sales, but there’s still life for PS2, obviously the sales show that.

Actually Sony has three consoles at the moment (PS3, PS2, and PSP). The PS2 has been getting new releases, but they’re all multiplatform games. Keeping the PS2 alive probably doesn’t require much work and it’s profitable.

I agree with what yas are saying but, just It ain’t helping it’s bigger brother …..

I heard they just released the PS2 in Laos! I wish I was there for the launch party.

    ROFLMAO…….nice harry

You know, honestly, it may have behooved Sony to make deals with some companies to try and get some of these “Wii only” titles on the PS2. Then again, it might have spread their gaming division too thin.

I’d like them to focus on the PS3 and ONLY the PS3, but I’m a minority in that, I’m sure.

Retitle, “Sony PS2 will eat into PS3 sales from price drop.” That said, Sony is still making money off of PS2, and it’s expected “ten year” cycle won’t be over until late next year, when I suspect they will magically be able to “afford” to put PS2 BC back into PS3 and have a significant PS3 price drop. Expect Microsoft to announce next gen console around this time (probably after the holiday season).
