PS3 gets cross game chat – Xbox still lacking ‘text chat’
Recently Sony released the latest firmware in a long series of iterative updates. The firmware added one feature that is really worth talking about – cross game text chat. This feature is so revolutionary gamers across the globe have jumped for glee as the PSN is now more robust than Xbox Live.
Of course the only caveat to the statement above is that it is not completely true. The PSN is still lacking one of the most sought after feature – cross game ‘voice’ chat. This is a feature that has been available on Xbox Live for a long time.
Ironically, the one feature Xbox Live does not have PSN gets – cross game ‘text’ chat rooms (not to be confused with messaging). I’ve been playing around with the new chat room feature and to be honest it really is neat. Gamers can now keep up to three chat rooms active while playing any game. These chat rooms will continue to run in the background until you decide to shut them down. Each chat room can hold up to 15 friends as well.
This is definitely a great feature, but what about cross game ‘voice’ chat? There is the regular voice and video chat, but cross game ‘voice’ chat is glaringly missing. The option for cross game ‘voice’ chat is there in the menu but it’s grayed out for now.
It seems like Sony rushed this firmware out the door before the ‘voice’ chat was put in. I think gamers have made it clear that it is better to have more features and less updates. To Sony’s credit it has been a very long time since the last update. However, the ‘more feature’ condition was not met in the latest update.
The guys over at PSN have done a great job at brining unique features like Youtube upload, Home party system, dedicated servers and browser support. However, it would be even better if they could at least bring the basics first.

You see over at Xbox Live we don’t log in to run around in some virtual world dancing with each other or pretending to be petafiles nor do we sit in little text chating rooms gossiping like a bunch of little bitches. That’s what Blorge is for. We actually play game and talk shit to each other in the process. This is why a headset comes with every Pro and Elite. We don’t kill you and text you about it. We get all up in your face and talk shit right up in your ear. It’s a LIVE Experience!!! You girls go text each other in your little rooms now ok. LOL

I can’t wait to try this feature out, voice chat doesn’t bother me i won’t care if people can talk across games because 1.) i don’t have a blutooth headset and 2.) i don’t plan to buy one. Besides the quality of the transmission sucks. Much easier just to phone your PSN contacts.

I’m pretty sure that the “traditional” way of doing cross game voice chat has been patented by Microsoft which is why it is taking so long to find solution.

Why don’t you just post on PSXtreme and get it over with. It’s clear you are very biased. XBL is a community based network and PSN is still trying to become that which is why Sony also created Home. So until Sony makes all of it’s games on the PS3 feel like they are all intertwined with each other along with community based tools like voice chat it will always be playing catch-up to XBL.

The Xbox360 does have a text chat function and it’s had it for a while now. The PS3 having a web browser is hardly a “unique feature” when the Wii, DS, and PSP have the same functionality. That’s “informed coverage” with quality fact-checking.
And I am sure PS3 gamers were ecstatic to get a “new” feature for their system. Text chatting is so revolutionary that not even computers from the ’80s could do that! Why, it’s simply another feather in the PS3 cap and something that PS3 users can lord over the heads of those insufferable Xbots. You really bring us the news “without fear or favor”!

Of course it’s all fun and games and for those who take me too serious, get a life. But really Text has always been there. I really don’t understand this Cross game texting because I’ve always been able to text someone whether I’m in a game or not. Why would I want to open a text room while I’m playing a game!! If I had 4 hands and 4 Eyes sure it might be possible but it makes no sense cause were not built like that. That’s like me playing Xbox and having my laptop beside me on some live forum. It just makes no sense because you cannot do both at the same time. But besides texting on the 360 there is also MSN Messenger on the 360 and really there is no point when everyone has voice capabilities. There is also voice messaging and picture messaging. Mike is full of bias and he doesn’t even know it LOL. Reading this article makes it sound like PSN is trying to be Facebook when really the reason we by game consoles is because we want to play games. Now if they said they creaded a live forum within PSN where you can post topics and talk about it just like we do here on Blorge then that would be worth applauding. So blame my poking fun at Mike because he is the starter of all Flames.

CAD theres no need to make a case for voice chat to me at all…
I use REAL ‘gaming voice applications’ on my PC all the time. You know, the ones that offer control, multiple binds, macros etc etc.
Besides which, I don’t use my 360 or PS3 for online much (if at all). Ill stick to firing up TS and chatting with my buddies over a nice 3 hour (or until our systems start to chug) game of Sup. Com, instead of the random masses.

Bourne… the blutooth headset has really good quality… when I talk to my other fwenD (sigh… singular) … we both use the blutooth headset… and the quality is great…. then again,.. we are both in the same country…
whereas Arvis has a crappy PS2 logitech shitty headset… I can hear him fine but I have to shout in order for him to hear me…
also… look at it this way… cell phone companies make more money from text messages than from voice calls… Sony are just ahead of their time… YEAH!

DWH when you spoke to me i was using the blue tooth head set that you got with warhawk… i know have the offical playstation one which makes what people say alot clearer…
though i have noticed that when i game online and im in there with an american host some times in the lobbies before the game actually starts i get some weird ass feed back… and my friends out here all say they get it some times as well… tad annoying cause everyone in the room can hear it and thinks im being some retarded xbox 12 year old…
the text thing is crap… you’ll be playing a game.. and if you have more then 10 people on your friends list your forever having people loggin on and off and the psn will let you know bout this via a lil msg in the top right hand corner (lil on plasma/LCD screens… on normal deff tvs it tends to take up 1/8th of the screen) this is all well and good but it de-sensidies you to the event as it happens to the point where you ignore it… so the geniuses at sony made the message system the same lil grey box with no sound… so i sit there after a game…going… well wen in gods name did i get these 3 messages? least with trophies you get a lil sound and ur like… AWESOME TROPHIE THAT I DIDNT KNOW I WAS GETTING…
cross game voice chat on the other hand is a must need… my gf has a ps3… she tends to play alot of games in one player mode only… cause when she does play online… she gets swamped with friend invites and people asking if they can see her boobies (litrally there was a message in her in box asking if she could reply with a picture of them… she attached a picture of the kid from the ring)… if we had cross game voice chat talking would be able to happen and i would have to pause every 30 seconds to see what she wrote on msn… which gets really annoying… cause most games online that you pause… you tend to only pause ur screen with ur dude just sitting there… (you should see her on home, litrally she’ll log on and there will be 4-5 guys just follow her…)
also… im willing to wager 5 choclate gold coins that MAK is ivans illegitimate child… and that MAK and CAD are seeing each other…

Taking Mikes post as it reads, yeah the firmware wasn’t bad and the texting thing is pretty cool. Reading between the lines Mikes is right again, no in-game voice chat is a dissappointing omission from the firmware that Sony should be trying to prioritize.
