Is Capcom out of line charging for Resident Evil 5 Versus?
Resident Evil 5 is Capcom’s crowning jewel this year with the game selling extremely well on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. However, a controversy that has arisen from the game is the announcement of the Versus DLC. Many gamers have harshly criticized Capcom for making them pay for the online component of the game.
Resident Evil 5 made huge waves recently selling extremely well on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Capcom seems more than satisfied with the sales performance of the game. The company recently announced that there would be a DLC available on XBL and PSN which enables one to play a new online mode in the game called Versus.
Just as the title implies, the new mode will allow gamers to play against each other four against four. The new modes are definitely welcomed, but the fact gamers have to pay $4.99 for something which is usually available for free on other games caused quite a stir. This move does make it seem like the company is nickel-and-diming the consumer.
None of the main games in the series have had an online versus mode in the past, so this feature is brand new. As the developers have indicated, I suspect that this idea for a DLC did not come up until the tail end of the development. The budget that is usually set aside to cover the development of the game does start to run dry after a while.
I think it does make sense to compensate for the extra development time if the DLC was never planned into the budget initially. The developers should get paid for the extra work that wasn’t originally required. To put it simply – I would rather have the option of playing the DLC rather then not have it at all. According to Capcom’s press release, the DLC will be available Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Also check out my review of Resident Evil 5 here.

Another game that is destined to pass me by. Oh well.
April 7th, 2009
really? crown of the jewel? REALLY?
no one ever heard of Street Fighter 4? another game released by Capcom this year… or Bionic Commando?
yes… I am taking one word from your entire article and fixating on it… yes I am that petty…
YOUR MOVE MIKEY!
April 7th, 2009
ACTUALLY DWH… u took 4…
April 7th, 2009
Mike you know that is bullshit. First any game that is being made for the 360 cannot go into development without thinking of online. Online is such a hugh part of 360 game development that that cannot be possible. Second that Online was available right after launch and you saying that it was not thought of until the end of development. Get real Mike they are nickel and diming this game.
April 7th, 2009
I agree with CAD, this is a total money grab.
Did anyone get this notice if it was an actual download, or just unlocking data on the disc?
April 7th, 2009
It’s about a 15 hour story, plus there’s already the mercs game. Both of the games offer tons of replay, plus they both can be paid online.
The DLC actually adds more than one game. I think it adds three or four new games. It’s priced pretty reasonably at about $5 or less…. so I’m not sure what all of the complaints are about. If you disagree with the DLC simply just don’t buy it.
Also I’ve been playing DeadSpace at the moment… now that’s a survival horror game. I loved RE5, but the atmosphere has become more action like than true horror.
April 7th, 2009
negativegamer.com/2009/04/07/resident-evil-5-versus-mode-is-already-on-the-disc/
this is why capcom is out of line for charging for the DLC… read em and weep boys… weep hard…
THATS IT CAPCOM! IM RETURNING STREET FIGHTER FOR GODFATHER 2… TAKE THAT!
gawd bless gamefly…
April 7th, 2009
I see. Well… virtually every company offers DLC now. I have yet to buy any add-ons myself though.
Does it make a difference if it’s on the disc or not? It’s not like they are asking $10 like every other DLC pack out there. The game it’s self offered just as much content if not more than any other game on the market.
April 7th, 2009
if it was on the disc… then their claims about having to spend money on making this new mode is pure bullshit… soul calibur 4 is another game that has DLC which just unlocks stuff that you had on the disc… you couldnt have gotten those content without paying…
IT PISSES ME OFF
April 7th, 2009
Only the convenience of no download time can be seen as good from this.
As far as I’m concerned: – Whatever is on the disc, I have already purchased.
It is not ‘downloadable content’ if I already have it.
April 7th, 2009
Less download time and less space needed on your HD…
Soul Calibur was one of the worst. They charged around the same price for a few costume pieces, and then they released multiple costume packs. A lot of companies do this and charge more for less.

@CAD
So according to you, its because the game was released ALSO on the inferior 360, (which of course we all know the graphics could have been much sweeter if developed solely for the PS3, but thats another issue) that we have to PAY for online DLC.
You can’t deny this as Microsoft has stated/proven/showed they will not let developers release DLC content for free (NOTE: See the recent Unreal 3 fiasco)
So, in essence, MS, has done what it set out to do: Bend over and rape their customers for all they got, by making them pay for features that haven been free since, well, ever
April 7th, 2009
and CAD, before you get all pissy,
i was pokin fun at ya, but in all seriousness, MS does ream their customers, and they do force developers to charge $$…but in the end it is up to the developers to charge for their DLC on the PSN so…its not entirely MS’s fault…
Oh yeah, the game would have looked much better if it was developed exclusively on the PS3…
Damn it, i just can’t help myself hehe again, just pokin fun
im off to lunch
April 7th, 2009
“First any game that is being made for the 360 cannot go into development without thinking of online”….
Right, just like BioShock, Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden II, Fable (which was patched), etc… single player games are just not possible on the 360 because live is just that great.
April 7th, 2009
BAM! CAD just got totally schooled! *yawn* Again.

It only takes PS3rd Retards to make something up and twist peoples words. Here it is were talking about Capcom Nickel and diming people and you stupid idiots have nothing better to say but to come in here adding to the flame wars. It is more then obvious that not all 360 games are online. That should be obvious to you stupid waste of fucking sperm PS3rd Retards. You dumb fucks have no idea how to read between the lines you dumb stupid fucks. I don’t need to explain myself anymore so Fuck Off.
April 7th, 2009
Well if you ps3rd fanboys are going to continue to flame us evil m$ rroders we are just going to remind you that your “superior” console is last in the current console race and has been for years!
Gamers clearly pick 360 over ps3rd month after month, year after year so SHUT THE FUCK UP until you actually have something to brag about!
April 7th, 2009
ah ha…ha..aha..hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
April 7th, 2009
CadCon®, get a room you two. Grab a Barry White album, some lube and a 360 and you have yourselves some fun.
April 7th, 2009
CAD, do you actually read all the words in an article or do you skim and pick the ones that support your argument better. Mike said “it seem like the company is nickel-and-diming the consumer”, and you said “Get real Mike they are nickel and diming this game.”
Seriously mate fucking read the whole article before making another stupid comment especially with your classic statement “It only takes PS3rd Retards to make something up and twist peoples words.”
Mmmmmm 360 never ever ever ever do that do they
Hey Mike, can we start a separate section judt for the moronic statements that CAD makes, and lets start it with “I don’t need to explain myself anymore so Fuck Off” and my personal favourite “stupid waste of fucking sperm PS3rd Retards”
April 7th, 2009
“You dumb fucks have no idea how to read between the lines you dumb stupid fucks.”
CAD… just wow… i see the light now, to use the same pay out twice in the same sentence must make you the most intelligent person on this blog and therefore right about everything, also i love how smart you have to be to use the word fuck when paying someone out… i am in your aura…
PPPFFFFFFFFFTTTT go play harry potter you silly fag
April 7th, 2009
OMG I srsly peed a little from CADCONs responses. How come proud PS3 owners never trip the fuck out and resort to name calling and neo-con style bullshit campaigns when they get called out on their lies?
Oh yeah, its because we don’t have to, we actually have some substance behind the confidence in our chosen console.
There is no shame in enjoying the lower tech end of gaming… I don’t know ANY wii owners who put their dukes up anytime someone points out the inadequacy of their console. Because they like what they own, and don’t fool themselves into thinking they are on the cutting edge of anything.
Unlike the Xbots.
April 7th, 2009
Erm… Fable 2 has online co-op….. I am assuming you’ve never even played it, have you?
April 7th, 2009
jojo29,
“You can’t deny this as Microsoft has stated/proven/showed they will not let developers release DLC content for free ”
Erm…. Burnout Paradise????
April 7th, 2009
Your theory has holes in it, son!
April 8th, 2009
@rhino – I don’t think CAD reads his own posts while he’s typing them. He just closes his eyes and lets his fingers fall.
“until you actually have something to brag about!”
My question would be, why do you feel the need to brag about owning a 360? Like someone else mentioned, do you see wii owners coming on here laughing about how thier underpowered little white box (no disrespect, I own one!) is ass fucking the 360 6 ways from sunday?
No. So why do you feel the need to ‘brag’? Does putting the PS3 down make your bruised 360 feel a little better a night?
April 8th, 2009
SW,
“No. So why do you feel the need to ‘brag’? Does putting the PS3 down make your bruised 360 feel a little better a night?” – You can reverse that sentence around and you’d have covered the majority of PS3rd boys here also.
April 8th, 2009
I know very it can. But the post was aimed at the author of the quote.
April 8th, 2009
“CadCon®” – Genius!
April 8th, 2009
$5 to unlock something that’s already on the disc….
That just doesn’t seem right.
I wish these companies would take a page from Epics book.
April 8th, 2009
@Harry Sachz
Touche on the Burnout Paradise DLC on the 360.
But the majority of what i stated about MS is, for the most part, true, as i bet MS was mad about not charging for it…
@CAD
WoW…just wow, what is happening to you? oh, people i understand why CAD is so upset: He RROD’d, AGAIN!!!
April 8th, 2009
so it’s better to charge the publishers for putting their items online like sony charges?
no, as a gamer, i have no problem paying for content that i want. the guys making it need to get paid. if i don’t want it; i don’t buy it.
however, with sony’s business model, the publishers foot the bill for putting things on PSN and roll the dice in hopes they make enough money to recoup dev costs and costs of PSN. they’re out money. not good.
xbox live allows publishers toi put items on xbox live for sale/download for free and only charges the gamer for items they purchase. seems pretty equitable to all involved…
psn is a fiasco….
April 8th, 2009
Resident Evil 5 SUCKS
April 8th, 2009
Xbox Live also has a DL size limit publishers are allowed/not allowed to put on.
psn is $.10 per gig.
If this update was a gig (its less than a MB however) and Capcom was being charged $.10 for every $5 they make are hardly believe they would be too upset. Heres to making a mountain out of a molehill though.
Live lets the gamers front the bill instead. Who should you care about more?
April 8th, 2009
If the Devs front the bill then they are more likely to make a good game that people will play and not crapware.
I wish the devs at the Istore had to pay to put their crap up. Then maybe they will make something worth downloading. instead I pay 99 cents for crap.
April 8th, 2009
Holy crap CAD got schooled ALL OVER THE PLACE! Daaaaang!
-Arvis
April 8th, 2009
kev is right.
PSN is a car crash.
April 8th, 2009
I actually died by using it.
April 8th, 2009
I hope they have insurance.
April 8th, 2009
I think Sony are going to cover everyone with a three year extended warranty.
April 8th, 2009
They’re also mailing a seatbelt add-on that plugs into the controller’s mini-USB port, for free!
…sorry, should I have let this joke die?
-Arvis
April 8th, 2009
But will I get an airbag?
“…sorry, should I have let this joke die?”
No. Never.
April 8th, 2009
Depends when you made the purchase SW.
Although all customers will receive a complementary cardboard box.
April 9th, 2009
i see arvis also has noticed the lack of responce from CAD after his statements…
April 9th, 2009
Don’t poke the bear… For all our sakes.
April 9th, 2009
The problem with LIVE is you are not only footing the bill, you are then ALSO asked to pay for the content on top that. Yeah, thats what ‘gamers’ want eh kev?
Sorry, but i already pay for what i want on PSN, i’m glad Sony doesn’t ask me to “foot the bill” of the publishers on top of that
April 9th, 2009
jojo – if you don’t want the content, don’t buy it. pretty easy.
if you don’t want psn’s content, you’re hurting the publisher because they’ve already paid sony to bring their content to psn. on top of having to foot the bill for their own servers. and customer support. many publishers are NOT happy with this model.
what you clowns forget is that if publishers continue to lose money on the deal, they won’t be able to continue the franchises they’ve created, meaning less gaming for the gamers.
again..psn is a fiasco. i give it 2 more years before they start charging the gamers. you can’t give things away for free forever. someone has to foot the bill….
April 9th, 2009
Assumptions on top of presumptions, wrapped in a layer xbot idiocy and basted with a firm and tart marinade de low self esteem.
You preteens are so cute when you think you can debate with propaganda thinking its truth.
April 9th, 2009
jofa – no assumptions. these are facts… someday when you graduate the 4th grade and learn how this industry is ran, you’ll understand… until then, we’ll just keep pointing a laughing at you ps3 owners for being so dumb to pay $600 for a movie player…. a player that does NOT give $600 worth of upgraded viewing from dvd…. fools and their money…lmao..
April 9th, 2009
Don’t make him angry Jofa. You won’t like him when he’s angry.
April 9th, 2009
Sony will match the cost of the development of psn games with the creators if the game is exclusive to the psn.
ttp://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/26/gdc09-sony-encourages-psn-exclusivity-with-pub-fund/
That really sucks for those developers. Poor them.
*sheds a tear*
April 9th, 2009
Sorry Kev, but Sony’s PSN will continue to be free. And yes, it can be free forever, just look at PC gaming. Free online, Free VoiP, since way back when i can remember ( been gaming it up since Sega Master System, 3D Missiles!!)
Sorry, i do not understand how you can sit there and justify a $50 dollar asking price, JUST to be able to play online, yet in the same breath, say PS3 is “too expensive”…the hypocrisy…
And no, i won’t apologize for being a ‘consumer’. I really don’t care if publishers have to “foot the bill”, just more cost planning on their part, we pay enough for their games ($60 bucks a pop, NOTE OFF TOPIC: Although, in reality games have always been around this price, even back in the 8bit days, madden games were around 54.99?? I have an OLD receipt in my Madden 93 box when i first got into madden
on genesis )
Now, i’m NOT against charging for DLC, as long as it is done CORRECTLY, in which case Capcom has been going on about it the completly wrong way, in terms of consumer interests, BUT like i said before, it is a smart business move at the cost of their “reputation”.
Also, the cost to publishers for Sony PSN is minimal, and we have only been given a general and vague article citing “developers are not pleased” or something along those lines.
MOST developers are actually flocking to the PSN due to its many advantages over LIVE:
1. No Space restriction
2. Developers can release content at prices they want or for free
3. Sony’s Support ( LIVE does have XNA as well so this is kinda countered)
4. FreedooM!!!!
As for MS fanboys trying to flip the $50 LIVE cost as being “better, that way theres some standard” lol, there is a helluva lot more trash in LIVE than on PSN…damn there was an actual article about PSN games having much more quality over LIVE games…ill try and find it. But thats simply due to the PS3 being superior hardware
can’t help it. RROD much lately?
April 9th, 2009
Kev..
If you really do not see a difference between upscaled DVD to TRUE 108op, you are just an idiot. This also has nothing to do with Sony’s PS3 vs 360.
If you truly believe that upscaled DvD looks even comparable to 1080p, i must reiterate, you are an idiot, and not even worth being called a 360 fanboy, at least they know the difference.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11282122&&#post11282122
I have a 55″ Sony KDS 55″A3000, it is one of the highest rated Rear-Projection TV you can get.(well back in Jan 2008 ) During this time, only ONE tv had higher ratings in terms of pure picture quality, and it was a plasma. Just a lil history before i continue.
Now, i had the PS3 before i had the TV and i was watching/playing movies/dvds on a 36″ RCA tube, when CoD4 came out. Thats when i was like, its not that much of a difference.
I buy the TV, hook everything up, put on CoD4, HUGE, and i mean MASSIVE difference between the two. Now, mind you, my friend’s pops, before he retired to the Bahamas, bought me a PS3. Yup, i got mine for FREE. Point is? Well, since he bought the PS3, he sent in the rebate for the 4 free Blu-Ray movies.
Now during this time, i was watching “upscaled” DvDs, like braveheart, pulp fiction, and for the most part the Picture Quality was great. I have no variables that could have affected the Picture Quality, as i had, at that time, THE highest rated RP TV, and the PS3 had just got its firmware to make it the best playing upscaler and blu ray player in the market.
When i popped in my first Blu Ray title, which was, Pirates: At World’s End, which i happen to have the DvD version of, and its such a HUGE difference STILL. You can TELL the difference. You can SEE a difference.
Thats my experience and everyone who has come to my house has done their own tests, bringing both a BR and DvD verision of movies, and let me tell you FACTS:
1. Their mouths always DROP.
2. They want BR(PS3) now
3. Have bought BR(PS3, well some 5/13 buddies aint too shabby )
4. Will probably never doubt me again lol
Kev, please stop, stick to your comments on the 360/PS3 differences, just stop it with the whole upscale = 1080p jokes, they not funny
April 10th, 2009
jojo – “MOST developers are actually flocking to the PSN due to its many advantages over LIVE”
then why are more games being released on the 360 than the ps3?
see? this is why i hate you ps3 fanboys. you just make crap up and believe it as fact. frigging ridiculous…..
also, sorry but progessive scan dvd players give great displays. is hidef noticeable as in improvement? sure… just not $400 worth…..
since you have a sony tv and a ps3, i can see why you’re on sony’s junk so hard… truly a fanboy…
you’re gonna look dumb when sony starts charging for online play. they’ve always maintained the position they can charge when they want to. they have never promised psn would be free forever. not once……
April 11th, 2009
You are so awesome and right all the time kev, i think I am going to stop even reading anyone elses posts, as they are just a shadow of the light of knowledge that you are a beacon of.
Ending a sentence with a proposition is so OG, muthafucka.
April 13th, 2009
@Kev
MORE game on the 360? of course, it has a years worth of crap before the PS3 came out. What i meant is more developers that make PSN/Arcade games PREFER the PSN, and thus are flocking to it. If you compare the quality of the PSN games to Arcade games, the PSN games are of a higher quality because of the following;
1. Sony does not impost inferior standards to developers i.e, Sony allows the developers the freedom to either charge for their game or let them release it for free, it allows the DEVELOPERS to choose the options for THEIR OWN game.
2. No space requirement, again giving FREEDOM to the developers.
3. There is a price for it, 4cents/GB or something small like that. Which was stated by most developers to not be that significant.
See, thats why i hate you mS fanboys (not all ) you guys love bending over and taking it up the rear from MS, paying to pay your own online games that we get to play for FREE. Tell, me, when i get to play an equally rated game ( SF4) online free with equal or better than servers than you $50 LIVE, where is the justification? Thats right there is NONE. Dumb fanboys.
Upscaled DvD can be nice looking…but nowhere near a 1080p picture, $400 worth? Definitely, its a night and day difference.
As for my preference of TV brands…two things. As i mentioned, my RPTV, at the time, was the highest rated RPTV, 2nd to a plasma tv which was about $2k more expensive, i think it was a pioneer or phillips can’t remember. I got my TV for $1500…yeah i m on sony’s junk. It called getting the best value for your money, something you 360 boys don’t seem to understand. Sony has ALWAYS been a top dawg in TV Electronics world. They were recently slipping for a couple years, but now, they are back on track, in fact, out of all the TV electronic giants, its still sony on top, although i believe they got passed up by samsung, so actually its Sammie, Sony and all the rest
Well, until Sony does charge for online play ( if they ever) I will just continue looking smart then
while you continue looking dumb paying to play the same game online while i gets to play for free
April 13th, 2009
@ MS fanboys,
Sorry, didn’t mean to generalize you guys with Kev, let me rephrase:
“Thats why i hate all fanboys like Kev”
Thats better
