PS3 and Xbox 360 get equal usage according to study
The three next gen consoles have been dominating the video game news feeds. According to the Nielsen report it seems like the consoles may be dominating the living room as well. One interesting tid-bit to come out of the study is the fact that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 owners equally spend around the same amount of time playing games.
It really doesn’t come as a surprise that the Wii is dead last as far as getting play time in an average consumer’s house. My Nintendo Wii usually gets love when I have people over that have never played a FPS in their life. For some odd reason I never want to turn on my Wii to play Wii-Sports when I am by myself. However, when the next Zelda or Mario game comes out it will definitely get some play time.
According to the Nielsen report, the PS3 and Xbox 360 are heavily used in an average consumer’s house. Xbox 360 owners seem to play on the console slightly more days out of the month and PS3 owners seem to play on the console slightly longer per day. Since the numbers are so close, its safe to say that both systems gets about the same amount of usage.
The report states:
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are regarded as the console of choice for the hardcore gamer. Both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 console user type’s fall into the ‘Heavy’ category of usage classified by terciles. Primary PlayStation 3 users are older than users of any other console tracked.
Apparently it seems that the average PS3 owner is around 25 to 34-years-old while the average Xbox 360 owner is 12 to 17. It makes sense that the older crowd would own a PS3 considering its high price while the younger crowd would own the cheaper Xbox 360. I suppose I don’t fit into the average category since I own both systems and is older than 25. Also, the study is based on gameplay time not Web browsing and movie/Netflix watching time. The statistics were taken from fourth quarter 2008.

April 9th, 2009
Seeing the PS3 is a bluray player I’d assume the XBOX gets used to play games more often.
The Wii is the only console that only plays games which probably doesn’t help it’s usage stats.
April 9th, 2009
mike, if your older then 25… are you younger then 34?… in which case you would fall into the avg ps3 one… i dont… im 5 years too young

lol
Good one.
And me_,
incase you still can’t find the line he’s pointing to, its this one:
“the study is based on gameplay time not Web browsing and movie/Netflix watching time”.
X-Bots really are 12 and I’m thinking most have the brains of a 3 year old.
April 9th, 2009
Jofa laying down the lawwwwwaaaaaaaaa.
Or something.
Interesting stats, good to see PS3 usage is on the up. I can kinda understand the Wii stats as I’ve only recently dusted off my Wii because of Rune Factory, months and months before that it was a dust collecting machine.
Saying that tho, I don’t think I’ve touched my 360 is fucking agessssssss and my only PS3 activity has been to logon to download demo’s and such.
Guess its just one of those dry spells…
April 9th, 2009
The PLAYSTATION 3 gets more usage because it has more and better games plus reads more video and audio coders plus Blu-ray the most have feature. Xbox is dated and Gears of War is old just like Halo nothing else. Plus the menu is retarded and Netflix is for people with Xbox Live plus a fucking Netflix subscription lame. And Wii well is just boring.

the nielson report is a joke. they have zero way of confirming their data. there is no identification at the point of sale, no set top Nielson box to gauge useage (like with tv sets), nor any way of knowing how much time is used for what.
dwh – awww…did i hurt your little feelings lately? lmao…
April 9th, 2009
Here comes the Neo-Con style shit talking brigade. The xbots are so insecure in their console choice that they attack through falsly trying to discredit a respected data source, merely for suggesting that ps3 owners might be very slightly more hardcore about their gaming than Xbox owners.
If you actually read the PDF report you would know how wrong you are. But its Cool, keep on rocking in the freeworld CADCONKEV.
April 9th, 2009
jofa – did read it. and there is no way the can substantiate the data. some day when you learn what “due diligence” means, you’ll understand just how pathetic you are…..
just because it’s PDF format doesn’t mean it’s true, noob…
Nielson is only a “respected data source” with television viewing as they have meters in homes that gauge viewship. no such thing for mass console sales….noob…
run along a play…recess is almost over…
April 9th, 2009
*pinches cheeks*
So adorable!
April 9th, 2009
@CADCONKEV
The fact that many Billions of dollars of marketing money, as well as decades of success using Nielsons Data to direct said moneys doesn’t mean a thing to the Xbot when the data shows an almost impercievable difference between Xbox and PS3 owners hardcore status. This study has nothing to do with purchases, only with usage. Your deflecting from the truth/ ignorance is further proof that you talk mostly out your ass, or are a slighted little xbot fanboi… or all of the above.
Where the due diligence in deciding to purchase an M$ 3FIXME?

The only insecure people here are PS3 People. This site caters to those who like to flame, thus Blorge has attracted simple you minded children. Kev, Harry, CON, and Myself basically read through the Bullshit that Blorge writes which is full of PS3 Bias and we basically defend the 360 because we know this site basically attacks the 360 that the writer like to deny. As for Neilson this is complete BS because like Kev said where is the proof and where did they get this information. Most people I know that own the 360 which is about 20+ People are between the age of 25-35 and there are the Teens that I know that have it as well. The ages of 12-17 I don’t thinks so. How does Halo 3 and Gears sell Millions to under aged kids?
April 9th, 2009
Irresponsible parents?
April 9th, 2009
“has attracted simple you minded children.”
What? I can’ decide if you meant ‘you simple minded children’ or ’simple young minded children’ (which would make less sense).
“How does Halo 3 and Gears sell Millions to under aged kids?”
The same way there are thousands of underage smokers in the UK, Canada and the US.
Rage on brother CAD.

kev’s probably right. The data put together here is obviously from a ps3 fanboy. We should all instead believe kev. His opinions are truly unbiased.
April 9th, 2009
Just in case you missed it when you thoroughly read through the document.
“Data in this analysis comes from two national panels which are then processed by the GamePlay
Metrics syndicated reporting system. The source for console metered data is Nielsen’s National
People Meter (NPM) sample of more than 17,000 US television households. When metering
sample households, Nielsen monitors not just television activity on all metered televisions but the
usage of any device attached to the television including video game consoles – old or new.
When a video game console is the detected source, we collect and process usage and
demographic data for the console just as we would a television viewing source. This NPM
sample provides the ratings data which is used as the currency for the $70 billion television
advertising industry.
For electronic measurement of PC games, the Nielsen MegaPanel® sample of more than
185,000 US tracked PC’s is used. The software based metering technology allows for individual
programs to be identified. When a program is run on a PC, the program name as well as the
person(s) using the PC is collected by the meter.”

PS3 numbers are obviously being skewed by the significant proportion bought by adults as Blu-ray players is all.
Besides, I wouldn’t laugh too hard if I was a PS3 owner, we all know about them……
The truth about PS3 owners is out…..
“Blokes are so passionate about video games that a third prefer to play them than have sex, a study found.
And this rises to two thirds if there’s a chance of playing a brand new game”

Suck it up ladies, it’s a slinky linky so it must be true, right?
April 9th, 2009
Have we gone into ‘doubt that source, its on TEH INTERNETZ’ mode or something?
If you read what phranco posted, its pretty clear as to who is getting the data and how.
“Nielsen monitors not just television activity on all metered televisions but the usage of any device attached to the television including video game consoles”
Respected data collection type people (fuck knows what you actually call Nielson) and they use the same tech. which they’ve been using to monitor TV usage…
April 9th, 2009
Yet these Xbots will cling to Wikipedia BS as if it’s the F’in Bible.
Wiki can’t be changed……..by you. /sarcasm
April 9th, 2009
Oh I should probably add…
Who really cares…
While it is fun to look at the numbers, who gives a fuck if the aveage 360 user is < 18. There are plenty who are older (the was kev’s talking these days, he’s in his fuckin’ 90’s for gods sake, and he still gets it on with the ladies…).
This has to be one of the more odd things people have argued about here.
Next we’ll be whining about which console filters dust the best…
‘JOR 360 SUCK In MOAR DUST THAN MY PSTHREE’
April 9th, 2009
Well…we know which one collects dust the best
April 9th, 2009
Wii?
April 9th, 2009
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
I dont get it kev… last I saw… you couldnt come up with a decent argument… then again.. I blame the american school system for your stupidity…
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
April 9th, 2009
Hang on, does collecting more dust make that console better or worse?
April 9th, 2009
depends on if the dust is on the inside or just on top.
April 9th, 2009
Hmmm, nope, I didn’t see a single wiki link in my stuff.
As for gathering dust?
Well my friends Wiis get a thorough work-out when people are round
(as Mike himself admits is the probably most common case).
My PS3 experience is that it mostly gets movie use (and I still hear complaints that there’s still too little good in the way of games out on it).
My own Xbox Elite is in daily (or should I say nightly use) as are those of my pals.
Anecdotal ‘evidence’, huh?
TBH I don’t know anyone who uses their PS3 or Xbox the way the Wiis get used.
People share their Ninty Wiis and have a good collective laugh with them, everyone I know that’s using a PS3 or Xbox does so alone……and there is the point.
Instead of that ludicrously self-m@stabatory and pointless BS about being a “hard core” or “serious” gamer (which at least ought to be an oxymoron) the fact is that far too much about the PS3 and Xbox involves the lone gamer.
The Wii sales numbers (occasional game launch related blips aside) and gaming experience prove the truth of what I’m saying.
Instead of taking too much notice of the lone gamers popping up here & moaning that they hardly use their Wii, people really ought concentrate on the truth that no-one in the real (non gaming obsessed) world cares about that “serious” or “hard core” BS.
Of course there’s a place for the (”serious” & “hard core”) game that requires the thorough learning of a 3″ thick manual (and in PC use at least half a dozen keyboard overlays etc etc)
but
the fact is that there is far too little money in that niche and the Wii is proving that a wider appeal is the way forward.
April 9th, 2009
If that ever becomes the case Happy.
Then Ill be the gamer thats on his PC playing games created by people with PASSION rather than the cheap shovelware companies creating games on consoles just for the bottom line.
Fuck casual.
April 9th, 2009
darkwhite – oh, i’ve given you plenty of facts, history and data in my posts. the prob is; your too ignorant (blind fanboy) to see the facts. instead you decided that you and YOU alone decided the “value” of the ps3. in a world of billions…you somehow elected yourself…. frigging hilarious…
April 9th, 2009
wider appeal only seems good in a hardware sense.

*applauds at SW*
This is a pretty entertaining comments section, on the whole. Kev was being petulantly opinionated on things he doesn’t fully understand, as usual. Phranctoast stuck his neck out to argue with him even though it’s obvious Kev doesn’t actually care, as usual. SW was witty and awesome, as usual. CAD pathetically tried to group himself in with the adults, as usual. HappyHockum wrote an intellectual but ultimately egomaniacal essay, as usual. And DarkWhiteHair was obscene, insulting, and pointless, as usual.
This is why I keep coming back. I love you guys.
-Arvis
P.S. And Arvis was slightly douche-y, as usual.
April 9th, 2009
Source report was later corrected.
“Too bad some key information in the report was wrong. After a follow-up with Gavin McMillan of Nielsen, I learned that the most important graph from the study was mislabeled… When you only consider the current generation of systems, the share of American’s gaming time in January, Wii is the clear leader:
Wii – 43.2%
Xbox – 360 38%
PlayStation 3 – 18.8%
But before you declare Wii the winner, check out the rankings for February, which change dramatically:
Xbox 360 – 41%
Wii – 39.6%
PlayStation 3 – 19.4%
In February, after the holiday gift hype died down, Wii usage declined while Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 play time increased…”
“Nintendo may have the biggest market share with the family-friendly Wii, but Microsoft has more dedicated users spending longer hours playing the Xbox 360. You can attribute the difference in time to the Xbox 360’s greater number of “hardcore” games and the millions of hours gamers spend playing online with the Xbox Live service. Whether that lead holds in March and through the summer remains to be seen.
And how does Sony fare? The company is in third place no matter how you cut the data, and completely out of the running when it comes to gamers’ time. The culprits there are probably the PS3’s fewer titles and lower market share. Luckily, the success of the PS2 (most time spent on the overall Nielsen console chart, and over 50 million units sold in the U.S. since launch) helps mitigate Sony’s position in the video game race for current generation dominance.”

April 9th, 2009
So what category do the 18 to 24 year olds come under?
I can see how the younger generation may be attracted to the 360 but the older ex ps2 users make up a big chunk of the 360 crowd. Also the 360 has been repeatly called the console for the hardcore gamer who are generally older also.
I def think that ps3 users are older also as they’ll no doubt be ex ps2 users and want to watch br movies on their big expensive hd tv.
Basically the age range of gamers is a lot bigger than it ever has been
April 9th, 2009
As far as I can tell, the actual report only states console usage numbers and does not differentiate between console “Web browsing and” streaming “movie/Netflix watching time”, only cable and regular tv/movie watching time. It is also unclear as to how they determine the actual age of the console user at any given time (parents/children? The explanation given is unspecific). 12-17 is also given as the primary user of PS2.

April 9th, 2009
CON,
According to the report, 18-24 is not a primary user age group on any console.
While older females make up the majority of pc gamers, gender is not considered on the consoles, though it is likely PS3 has a higher female population of gamers, considering it also has more games that appeal to females, and the primary user base is older (though that user base number may also be skewed due to less market share).
April 9th, 2009
“While older females make up the majority of pc gamers…”
So the PC is the choice of the MILF, huh?
Right, that’s it, I’m becoming a PC gamer.
April 9th, 2009
FUCK YOU ARVIS! Im never insulting…
April 9th, 2009
Interesting revision Carl.
While I can understand that more 25+ year olds own a PS3 due to their price, i’d like to see the actual numbers of 25+ year olds who own one or the other. Anyone have that data?
April 10th, 2009
HH,
Re the little Wiki comment that phranctoast made, I believe it may be directed at me.
In another thread he tried to tell me that both the 360 and PS3rd version of GTA4 weren’t in HD, and that I speak fluent retard. I advised him that he is wrong and the 360 version is indeed in 720, whereas the PS3 version is less, thus not HD, and linked the first result in my search for native resolution, which turned out to be a wiki page.
Anyway, 2 PS3rdbots weren’t happy with that, claiming that Wiki is not reliable etc and wanted another link (something that they could have looked up themselves), which I provided.
He didn’t seem to respond to that, I thought he dropped it, but by the looks of things, he hasn’t.
I said this in the other post, it takes a big man to be a forum bully, but it takes a bigger man to admit when he is wrong.
April 10th, 2009
harry – the ps3 fanboys use wiki when it serves their needs.
they use anything on the ‘net. vgchartz, sonydefenseforce, blogs, forum posts….ANYTHING to make the ps3 look less of a trainwreck than what it is…
just very, very few actual facts….
April 10th, 2009
sorry harry. Must not sit here all day paying attention to everyone of your posts.
Must of got GTA confused with a different game. You did fail to address the resolution difference with the NG games. It’s great that you already played it.
Anyway. Come Monday I wont be around to much. Got put on a mobility assignment at work and will be in the field all summer.
Ill try and correct the xbot insanity as much as possible, but that will either be in the very beginning of the day or towards the end.
April 10th, 2009
You have to be careful of that Wiki Harry.
When it doesn’t suit some people just go in and change the data to fit their own argument.
There was a pretty sad political tale in the UK a while back where junior staff of the Conservative party
(at least they always will only admit to it being juniors)
altered a Wiki entry so their party leader didn’t look such a f*ckwit when he made a claim (which turned out to be wrong) about something another party leader had said.
h**p://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7884121.stm
It would be funny if it wasn’t so true and tragic.
April 10th, 2009
SW,
Is Rune Factory good? GI gave it a rather blah review, but I’m a big Harvest Moon fan. I don’t have tons of time to play games, so… would you recommend Rune Factory, or is it too much of a time waster?
-Arvis
April 11th, 2009
Arvis,
Its OK, its not amazing. I’m really not a ‘farm sim’ fan, but the dungeon crawling was kinda fun.
It stalls sometimes because you just have to talk to the right person, or just turn up somewhere at a certain time (in order to progress the story). There is also little progression, you start with the biggest farm you can get and just kinda improve your tools and weapons.
I’d give it a 7.5/10. Its not awful, its not great, but it decent.
April 11th, 2009
Pot this kettle Kev …….
You need to practice what you preach. You throw accusations to the ps3rd crew when you do exactly the same thing from the other side of the fence.
April 11th, 2009
HH,
Yeah actually that made the news over here!
April 11th, 2009
“You throw accusations to the ps3rd crew when you do exactly the same thing from the other side of the fence.”
STOP! Stop the madness!
Now he might come back with a post about how he’s mr right (as usual) and ps3 owners are fanboiZ (as usual) and that the PS3(rd?) is a 452 mile an hour flying, flaming, slightly rotting corpse of a steam engine(aka train) that just derailed and killed all on-board(……as usual).
Blorge just needs to give kev his own private shoutbox, call it ‘Kev’s take(tm)’ and just let him spew forth the hate for all things Playstation and possibly sony(……….as usual). Blorge could even get Ivan on the other side and call it ‘View of a Moustachioed man(tm)’.
It would be a battle of wits 5 years could envy.
April 11th, 2009
A point-counter-point style series with kev and ivan would be awesome. It would be like the special olympyics of arguing on the internet! Mirror on mirror infinity worm holes for everyone!~
April 11th, 2009
Sorry no offense but i have a a real life. Gaming is just a excuse to waste money. Anyways I’m a winner not a big fat Xbox LOSER.
April 11th, 2009
Yes, you’re a winner Ivan. Now go back to combing your moustache and watching Hannah Montana.

way to keep the ps3 fanboy “logic” going… lmao…
eyes petal? wtf are you babbling about….
April 14th, 2009
kev… do u really think anyone here thinks you anything more then an overly obsessed fanboy?
April 15th, 2009
Kev – English language seems to be a sore point for you….. “dry your eyes” is english for wipe your eyes you cry baby.
I am the only one between the two of us that has and enjoys both systems (360 and ps3)…… and you call me the “fanboy” . Pfft go away silly little man.
