Can Netflix compete with PSN on the PS3?

April 14, 2009

Can Netflix compete with PSN on the PS3?One of the biggest announcements Microsoft made during E3 last year was the new partnership with Netflix. Many consumers were extremely excited about the feature as it promised instant streaming directly to the Xbox 360. The PS3 was left out in the cold last year, but it looks like Netflix may be bringing its service to the console sometime soon.

Netflix practically confirmed that the service will be heading towards the PS3 this week when it put up a job posting. The job posting indicated that Netflix was looking for an engineer to develop on multiple game consoles. The company also put up a survey several weeks ago asking frequent Blu-ray renters whether or not they would be interested in seeing the Netflix service on the PS3.

From a business perspective it would make sense for Netflix to try to get its service on as many devices as possible. Although, I did start to wonder if PS3 owners will even care about getting Netflix service on the system considering the great movie support Sony has been giving to the console.

The PSN now boasts all major movie studios on the service after the last major studio joined recently. I can jump on the PSN and pick out over a dozen new releases this month that probably will never be available on Xbox Live Marketplace either for rental or purchase.

I talked about the downside of using Netflix’s Instant Watch service on Xbox Live not that long ago. You have to run to the computer and queue up the movies you want to watch and run back to the Xbox 360 and watch them. It just seems ridiculous that Netflix couldn’t implement a shopping cart type system on the Xbox 360. Also, the Netflix Instant Watch service only consists of older movies. Why else would the service be so cheap?

You might as well use the media server capability on the PS3 or Xbox 360 and stream Netflix and everything under the sun to the consoles. You could also just slap Yellow Dog Linux onto the PS3 and do everything without even leaving the comfort of your entertainment center.

Aside from the convenience factor, I did find some redeeming qualities about Netflix that the PS3 owners could leverage to their advantage. You can still watch all of the latest movies in Hi-Def via PSN either by renting or purchasing them and watch all of the older movies in standard definition via Netflix Instant Watch. If the service does come to the PS3 it will be interesting to see if Netflix will utilize the same menu system to drive the service via PSN or change things up a bit.

ive gone to the video replay….and…… yup

biggest thing for xbox at E3 last year was them stealing FF13… not some movie player!

  2. harry sachz:

Neither platform has movie downloads in Aus. Some licensing issue or something.

  3. Spideydog:

    True Harry.

In any case, I’m not interested in any streaming platform on ps3. If I’m going to watch movies on the ps3, it will be full HD, not streamed garbage.

I’m in no hurry to see movies and can wait for the BD version to come out.

  4. harry sachz:

Yeah, the only type of streaming I do is streaming downloaded Lost and Heroes episodes from my laptop to my 360. The quality of the divx files is pretty ordinary on a 46 inch TV though.

  5. CON:

You downloading the 350mb files or the larger ones?

  6. CarlB:

Okay… Netflix on 360… I already had Netflix before it came to 360 to save money on rentals and/or buying movies. With one flat rate ($9-$16/mo) I could watch as many movies as I wanted and save a ton of money compared to renting them or buying them through either of the consoles. The movies come fast (1-2 days) after you put them in the mailbox as they scan them at the post office box and they have several distribution centers here in Cali. When the streaming first came out (it is still at no additional charge to existing members) it was was sometimes very grainy and quirky, and a pain to hook up to the tv via hdmi, then switch to windows from firefox, etc., but I still used it and enjoyed it.
Since I have had it on the 360, it is much easier, the quality of the stream is much higher, I can catch up on the newer TV shows, documentaries, and some movies (yes they do have some new releases). No, it is not perfect, and yes you may have to spend a few minutes with your queue online (I currently have 428 movies/shows in my “instant” queue, so I don’t have to mess with it for a while, but I can always do that from my iphone as well). The thing is this streaming service is still relatively new and was never meant to completely replace dvd’s/blu-rays/hd downloads from the get go, but rather to supplement these. So considering I have an extra service (that works much better through the 360 than PC) I didn’t have last year at no additional cost, I am quite pleased with it, as will many PS3 owners be who are already existing Netflix members… if they have the opportunity to experience it. For new members, the service comes with unlimited dvd rentals (yes, brand new releases) for as little as $9 a month. How long would it take you to spend that on PSN or XBL to rent or buy content? The quality of Heroes, South Park, The Office, 30 Rock (all listed under “What’s New” in the screenshot above), Walk Hard, Never Back Down, etc. is fine on my 47″, and whatever they don’t have I get on DVD through the mail in a couple of days tops.

  7. harry sachz:

    CON,

Just the 350mb ones. Are the larger ones worth the extra bandwidth?

  8. Barnabe Jones:

Sorry guys the 360 is trash. Even your beloved M$ was forced to face this fact today.

  9. CarlB:

Sorry barnabe, my launch day 360 still works great almost three and a half years later. Now back to Reilly’s Rangers… maybe by the time I get done with the achievements (some trash the PS3 picked up later on for some reason or other) on Fallout 3 Broken Steel will be out so I can level up during The Pitt and Operation Anchorage.

  10. kev:

i hope netflix does go to PSN. this will directly cut into sony’s business model of selling bluray movies to recoup the colossal losses of the ps3.

    such a trainwreck…..

  11. lock_down:

Given how Microsoft like to tout the success of Netflix on the 360, Sony have some huge leverage on Netflix because Sony Pictures provide a tonne of content for it.

I can’t think that Sony are going to want the same Netflix terms for the PS3 that Netflix has on the 360, Sony will want a better deal; maybe a special PS3 subscription that works out cheaper than the 360 model, with no need for an annual Live Subscription.

And again, given how Microsoft claim it’s successful, if the PS3 has the better deal, then people will migrate over the PS3, which means buying the PS3 hardware.

  12. CarlB:

Not quite a trainwreck kev, but I do agree with you that it would cut into sales of not only bluray movies, but hd downloads as well, which may be the reason it isn’t already on PS3. They have almost half the stuff that is pictured above available instantly for a fraction of the price at DVD quality.

Just a hunch, you don’t like the 360, do you? lmao

  14. Barnabe Jones:

The 360 itself is ok… but I’m amazed that more than half way through the console’s life span, and they still haven’t managed to fix some critical issues with the console. RROD, E74, and disc scratching should have been resolved years ago.

  15. lock_down:

360 users don’t care about all the hardware problems Barnabe.

  16. CON:

    Hence ps3rd

  17. phranctoast:

The key thing is the subscription service. If PSN had a subscription service for movie for one monthly price it would compare to this.

One price for HD rentals and another price for SD.

    @Kev

Some of the comments you make regarding PS3, it’s like you wish it would fail and Sony would go under! If you like games that’s the last thing you should wish for. Competition is good, monoply is bad! The way you also talk about how the PS3 is such a financial trainwreck is amusing, are you a shareholder or something? You know, Microsoft has alot more money then Sony, but you do realize the FACT that they have also lost alot more money then Sony with the Xbox brand? I don’t see either of these companies pulling out of the console business anytime soon, it will be a bummer if I am wrong!

knight – agreed. i would love to see sony out of the market. their greed, their arrogance, and their inability to innovate the gaming industry has brought them to this point.

it’s odd that the same people saying “competition is good” were the same fanboys thinking ms should’ve never entered the market and should fold up shop due to the RROD issue.

When sony was the topdog, 99% of the sony fanboys never thought “competition was good”. Now that the situation is reversed, it’s different.

I’m glad they’re losing money on this monstrosity. Kuturagi was deservingly removed after releasing this to the masses.

How can anyone think launching a $600 toy to a userbase built primarily on the $199 price point is a good idea? then to add insult to injury have kuturagi claim “people will pay any amount because it has the playstation name on it”. (paraphrased).

That one phrase summed up sony’s opinion of their customers. idiot sheep to be sheered at their will.

Their conduct last generation is inexcuseable, as well. Their DDE and DRE issues are legendary. While they refused to ever acknowledge the problem publicly…to this very day…

the funny thing is; the ps3 fanboys only think gamers will remember the RROD fiasco. none of them believe that many gamers are not going to gamble $600 for another possible DDE or DRE fiasco, also contributing to slow sales.

Granted the ps3 is better quality than the ps2, but the memory lingers…..as MS is about to find out next gen, imo…

I truly think sony should end up being a publisher of great games, move out of the hardware biz for a while, leaving room for Apple to enter who has the innovation and new ideas to slap MS around with….

  37. JofaMang:

    HAHAHAHAH

You criticize price of the ps3, and in the next breath suggest Apple take their place.

Yeah, apple has a GREAT reputation for fair pricing!

  38. lock_down:

Come on though, who wouldn’t want to see Apple ads mocking RRoD and disc scratching?

  39. lock_down:

    …oh, and E74 as well.

    Ah kev…shall we? lets begin.

Kev said:”agreed. i would love to see sony out of the market. their greed, their arrogance, and their inability to innovate the gaming industry has brought them to this point.”

Sorry, Sony innovates moreso than Microsoft. Lets look at what games/genre Sony covers:

    Uncharted
    Resistance
    Ratchet and Clank
    God of War
    Motorstorm
    Gran Turismo
    Twisted Metal
    Wipeout
    Warhawk
    Jak and Daxter
    Sly Racoon
    Heavenly Sword
    MLB
    Killzone

These are all from Sony pure studios or 2nd parties. All cover a broad range of genres and some have set benchmarks (Ratchet/Jak/GoW/Gran Turismo/Killzone) in their respective genres.

    Lets see what MS brings:

    Forza
    PGR
    Halo
    *Gears
    *Fable

That about sums up the “great” and innovative games that MS themselves bring. *these games can be bought elsewhere :)

BUT, MS has brought one very important thing to the market: Online. And Sony improved it: Online for free :)

Kev said:When sony was the topdog, 99% of the sony fanboys never thought “competition was good”. Now that the situation is reversed, it’s different.”

Not so true. Tell that to the Dreamcast owners. I was a DC/N64/Sony owner :)

Kev said:”I’m glad they’re losing money on this monstrosity. Kuturagi was deservingly removed after releasing this to the masses.

MS has been losing money on the xbox brand, since the original xbox. The 360 is either breaking even or making profit since only last quarter. Even then, the division the 360 is in, is still losing money, Zune anyone? <—this is what irks people the most. MS can just throw money at it, just because they have it, any other company would have gone under. This makes you lose respect for the company, in SOME people’s views…which to there is a lot that think this of MS..

I agree on the Ken comments…what the f was he thinking!?

Kev said:That one phrase summed up sony’s opinion of their customers. idiot sheep to be sheered at their will. ”

Same can be said about MS’s customers. Dumb Fcks that will pay for a poorly built machine and will pay for anything we label a ’service’ :)

Kev said “Their conduct last generation is inexcuseable, as well. Their DDE and DRE issues are legendary. While they refused to ever acknowledge the problem publicly…to this very day…”

ROFL, was at most a 5% defect rate, well within industry standards. BUT, WAIT, BUT, im not saying its ok to have that high a defect rate. 5% is a high as defect rate and should NEVER be that high, but 33% is higher still, moreso with that knowledge about your competition…

    My favorite part…

Kev said” Granted the ps3 is better quality than the ps2, but the memory lingers…..as MS is about to find out next gen, imo…”

It is better quality, the memory did linger, for BOTH Sony and consumer…guess who won out in the end? The consumer, we got a value packed system. FACT. We got a value packed WELL BUILT system.FACT

    Kev said
“I truly think sony should end up being a publisher of great games, move out of the hardware biz for a while, leaving room for Apple to enter who has the innovation and new ideas to slap MS around with….”

In the first quote, you said Sony brings nothing new? Yet, here you say they have “great” games? ROFL, explain that one.

Sony has been slapping MS around with innovative games since release. If Sony leaves the console industry, and were to be pure software, guess who’s system those games are coming out for? I’ll give you a hint: It won’t be MS, and they are also situated in Japan: Nintendo.

Now, what does the MS 360 have to offer in terms of innovation? We all KNOW AS FACT, MS 1st party lineup is crap. Very few titles. What will that leave MS to offer gamers. Third-party exclusives have gone the way of the Dodo. I actually would love to see a pure Wii2 vs 720 generation.

It would be Nintendo’s easiest generation to win. Nintendo’s “they print money” LEGENDARY 1st party titles, against MS Halo/Fable/Gears…ROFL just the Mario and Mario spin off titles handle them, thats not including Zelda/Metroid etc..remember there won’t be third party exclusives in that generation to worry about:)

Fact is, MS, out of all the consoles, is slowly has less and less to offer people. What are you getting this year? A Halo EXPANSION? not even a full blown game….

“Just the 350mb ones. Are the larger ones worth the extra bandwidth?”

    If I’m downloading Divx/Xvid I wouldn’t go below the 700mb size.
I prefer the 1.3gb -1.4gb size myself for the AC3 surround sound.

Of course you could get into HD encodes if you like (and have the HD TV for it).

You can get some outstanding encodes @ 4.3gb and up.

I used to stick to the DVD5 & DVD9 sizes but there has been a drift up to around 12gb on some movies as people stop using discs and switch to the amazingly cheap big HDDs around nowadays.

The truth is you really don’t need the 25gb or even 50gb size Blu-ray requires (or the 15gb or 30gb of HD DVD for that matter) once you strip out all the guff and settle on a DTS or Dolby Digital audio track @ 1.5mbps.

(and I defy anyone to do a genuine blind test and tell anyone they can tell the difference on proper kit, just because a little light comes on or a sign lights up or the volume gets a little louder does not mean you can hear lossless audio properly, that sort of stuff is a gimmick the CE corps play to laugh at the ignorant)

…..it also has to be remembered that those encodes are done by talented amatuers on retail software. Once the professions start producing HD at a sensible size for streaming/downloading things can only get even better.

  45. harry sachz:

    HH,

I just took a look at one of the HD files for Heroes, it’s a mkv file. Can the 360 play those? I don’t want to download it just in case I am wasting my time.

Or maybe I should, my laptop has a hdmi slot, so I could probably just play it straight to the TV.

  46. bigmickyd:

harry do you have an auto-post thing set up for any of ivans post to instantly completment his lip fluff?… prob the same program kev uses to instantly DESTROY ALL ANTI-360 MATTER FOR FFFOOOOZZZAAAAA RRRULLLLLZZZZ DDDAAA HHHOOORRRDDDD

No, just that whenever he posts anything I can picture the pic of his dirty gringo moustache in my mind.

  48. CarlB:

harry, I just finished up Season 3 of Heroes and it looked great on 360 Netflix streaming on the 47″ (broadband internet). Are you talking about season 4 files? If that is the case I would recommend the hdmi connection, as it has worked fine for me in the past as well.

  49. harry sachz:

    Carlb,

Yep, season 4. You’ve played the 350mb files via HDMI? If the quality between that and streaming is miles apart, i’ll definitely try that next time.

  50. CarlB:

I don’t know about miles apart harry… I haven’t played those files via HDMI, but rather streamed Netflix via HDMI before it was on 360… as well as other sources, but am not really picky about the difference between HD 1080p and DVD when it comes to watching shows/movies. Do you have Netflix… or is it available?

    @Kev

You made a few interesting points Kev. Yes in the PS1 era Sony was pretty much a monopoly and they was so much crap (also alot of good) on that system. When Microsoft came around I welcomed the competetion. That’s when Sony really started to shine with their 1st party development. If it were not for Microsoft it’s very possible Sony would not be so strong in their 1st party development today.

Nintendo use to rule the market and that quickly changed with the PS1 and PS2. Nintendo was the underdog going into this round of consoles and is forcing Sony and Microsoft to play catch up in some good and bad ways. Bottom line, I like all of this generations of consoles. If there were no competetion you would be playing alot more lame games! All the other stuff you said, wow, not saying you are right or wrong. But your are extreamly baised against Sony! You throw around the term fanboy quite a bit for someone who acts like a perfect example of one! You know, not everyone who owns a PS3 is a complete fantard! Most people who own consoles don’t even come on these blogs or give a damn about all the “expertise” you spout!

  52. JofaMang:

    @Knighthawk

It shouldn’t take long for you to realize that it is useless to feed CONCADKEV any responses. They feed off the energy of rational thought and convert their output to irrational fanboyism, no matter how well you prove it to them.

Like a down syndrome babel fish, really.

  53. Knighthawk:

^lol point well taken. You know, I find it hard to believe anybody can be so narrow minded. I’m inclined to think they are just taking a giant piss with everyone!

  54. kev:

    way to be consistent….

  55. Arvis:

Heh, Kev, I’m really starting to believe that you don’t even know what the word “fact” means. I haven’t seen any in any of your posts.

    -Arvis

  56. JofaMang:

Haha, I am no fanboy, just a hater of the 360’s reliability issues.

I have stated many times on this site that if I had any faith at all in the hardware, I would own one. I am a gamer, and there are some great games for 360. You are the one with the fanboy issues.

My beef is with the company and their actions this generation of consoles. If you really can’t admit any wrongdoing, it is your fanboyism that is over the top and discrediting you.

  57. CarlB:

Okay Jofa, so you you are saying you have no experience with “360’s reliability issues” because you do not own one, right? Either company has made several mistakes by gamers.

  58. JofaMang:

Experience with the reliability issues does not have to come from owning one. I belong to a big group of friends who are nerdy gamers, who own PS3s, 360s and gaming PCs. I personally know an EB games manager, and several sales staff from place like Best Buy and FutureShop.

I, in no way, am claiming that this is anything more than anecdotal evidence, but it has convinced ME.

Unequivocally, from personal use and from professional interactions, my friends shown me that the 360 is a horrible piece of hardware, as far as reliability goes. Several of these gamers have had over 4 360s, with only one within the group that I know of that hasn’t had to replace his (falcon chipset elite).

They defend their continuing use for very good reasons: they belong to fully established online communities, and starting over on the PSN is a daunting task for them. Instead they just stick with the 360, and keep enjoying themselves, between repairs.

Again, as I have said before, I will give M$ my money, when they provide a product that doesn’t have such widespread quality issues.

  59. CarlB:

So your friend’s falcon chipset elite is reliable… and your others had first run chipsets… which were then replaced/fixed free of charge?

How could “starting over on PSN” be daunting when they only just came out with achievements standard this year?

  60. JofaMang:

A disclaimer: I am not trying to convince anyone else to feel the way I do about this, but am merely explaining WHY I hold this opinion, and why I am so susceptible Xbot propaganda trolls. I agree that this is anecdotal at best, and only a reflection of my own experiences.

I said the only one that didn’t fail happened to be a falcon. There were failures amongst falcon owners as well. Don’t twist my words if you want to have a mature discussion.

Not all were replaced/repaired free of charge, as some of the more hardcore online clanners didn’t want to wait for replacements at the time when it was taking up to a month for others to get theirs back. Add to that waiting time a few of them had refurbs in far shoddier condition that they had sent them out, and those also had a tendancy to break alarmingly quickly (One of my friends had his refurb RRoD 48 hours after he got it back, another had the DVD drive fail 2 weeks into the refurbs stay in his pad). Others had DVD Drive failures that were not covered at all (and aren’t shady enough to commit fraud for the extended warranty).

This is why i steadfastly deny that the install base is even close to the sold number of 3fixmes.

As for starting over on PSN, I wasn’t referring to achievements/trophies at all, but the large community they became imbedded in during their time on the 360. Most 360 owners do not own a PS3, and thus, migrating to the PS3 would be a lonely place, comparatively, until the time and effort were put in to build up a similar social circle.

  61. CarlB:

Sorry, I was just asking about and using the data you were giving (1 falcon chipset reliable), not trying to say all were reliable. So some questions… how many friends (as in people you know in person… not just online) do you have that are XBox 360 owners (just trying to get past “others” to a number for the anecdotal evidence), how many of that number had theirs go down, and how many did not?

  62. JofaMang:

People I know in real life with 360s is about 15, give or take a couple. Only one has not had to send his 360 in for repair, or replace. Three of those are on their 5th 360 repair/refurb. To be fair, all three of those are smoking bachelors, heh.

Unfortunately, I can’t recall all of the chipsets that they had, but one of the disc drive failures was a jasper arcade bought last summer, which instantly ended my hope that the jasper might be something I could trust with a purchse. :(

I have personally witnessed at least 5 RRoD with my own eyes (only once at the moment it happened, though, during an absurdly long session of COD5 shortly after it released).

I initially waited for the PS3, and bought at launch, because of my ultra fond PS1/2 memories. Only one of my PS3 owning friends (of about 9 or 10) has had a bricked machine, and that was due to a power outage during a firmware update. It was the day he bought it, so he brought it back and claimed it didn’t work out of the box. He got an instant replacement and a UPS, and hasn’t had an issue since.

Wow, I don’t blame you… so where do you live?

  64. JofaMang:

    Winnipeg, Canada.

I think it is entirely possible that the cold climate can contribute to the 360s problems here. Not the cold itself, but the fact that we hole up all winter, and with long stretches of -40 and worse, there can be a lot less fresh air coming in and out of houses and apartments. Our winters often start in the beginning of October and end somewhere around the end of march to the beginning of april.

On top of that, most of my friends are smokers and cat owners, like my wife and me. if the 360 is inherently weak against heat dissipation issues, these factors could heighten those risks.

Regardless, it hasn’t seemed like a sound decision to purchase one here, for whatever reason.

  65. CarlB:

Again, I agree with you, especially if the PS3 is thriving in the same environs.

  66. harry sachz:

    Canada eh?

  67. harry sachz:

    What’s that aboot?

  68. CarlB:

    What a hoot, eh?

  69. JofaMang:

    Holy Smokes, Eh.
