E74 error the new RRoD for Xbox 360?
The Red Ring of Death became a major issue for Microsoft a couple years ago causing the company to establish a three year warranty program. There is a new issue that has been gaining attention on the Xbox 360 referred to as the E74 issue. Apparently, Microsoft is admitting that this issue is more widespread then originally thought to be by extending the three year warranty to cover it.
After a year of dodging the RRoD issue Microsoft finally gave everyone a three year warranty which saved me around $300 in repair costs. I sent my unit out for repair three times so far and luckily it was covered within the RRoD warranty.
Many of you may remember I had a big scare back in February when my system started freezing after updating to the latest firmware. I jumped onto the forums and found out that I wasn’t the only one experiencing issues from the update. Many were getting E74 errors and could not operate their Xbox 360.
Luckily, after rebooting it several times my system seems to have survived the deathtrap caused by the update. After the incident I have been limiting my usage of the system over the past month. On the official Xbox 360 forums I couldn’t help notice that the E74 problem continues to plague Xbox 360 owners. Although, I don’t think the E74 is as prevalent as the RRoD issue, which was much more widespread.
I am extremely happy to see that Microsoft has recognized the E74 issue and included it into the RRoD three year warranty program. If it were only a handful of people, Microsoft would have made them pay $100 to get it repaired. However, the issue has been reported widely enough for Microsoft to foot the bill, which is great in my book. I can now breathe a little easier while playing Gears of War 2.

Why would they recall all products when not all of them are faulty, i.e mine? A 3 year warranty for these two faults are reassuring.
Anyway, the E74 error doesn’t seem to be as widespread as the RROD. In regards to the RROD, that’s basically done and dusted anyway. The Jaspers are rock solid, and any machine that does get a RRoD get an ‘Opus’ put in their system, which has been referred to as a ‘zombie killer’.

a recall happens when a product has a fail rate over 7.2% (which is law in australia, i think it may e marginally higher in U.S.A, not sure never lived there) wasn’t the RRoD fail rate around the 20% mark?
a recall doesnt mean everyone gives it back for there money… they give it back and it gets fixed… instead they leave them all out there to be ticking time bombs and from what ive heard don’t fix properly as people are going through 2-3 xbox’s
i sold mine after i got it back cause i was told by xbox that they cant stop it from happening again with the model i had…
now theres a 2nd issue… which seems to be firmware related… surely they would have patched it already instead of leaving it out there… again?

I broke the story about the huge rise in E74 errors months ago. Nice to see M$ finally having to admit the problem. M$ originally was denying the issue, so many people had to pay out of pocket. I hope the word gets out to the average xbot that they’ll be reimbursed.
Nice that to see that the console was released in 2005 and they still can’t manage to get it right. Seriously how can you guys take this crap and still try to stand for M$. But I already have a PS3! Call me weird but I actually want my 3rd 360 to die, so I can get a new one! Besides, already have too much invested with my 360 to give it up now. Also there are games coming out for it that are not coming out for PS3 that I want to play.
Agreed, Microsoft has done some pretty shady things, but in the end I never had to pay for any of the repairs and have had alot of fun with the 360!

As per the usual anti Xbox chorus has lept up to action to diss what is in fact a positive – and very fast – move by Microsoft.
The truth at the heart of this is that the 3yr warranty just got extended because of some concerns about a new fault which had been cropping up.
The truth is that some conspiracy nuts were hawking some very silly claims around the net which said that thanks to a new XBL update Xboxes were no longer showing the old RROD but a new fault, E74, not covered by the 3yr warranty.
The conspiracy idea tried to claim that this was a sneaky and deliberate plot by Microsoft to side-step their warranty liabilities.
Naturally now that Microsoft have moved so quickly to extended the 3yr warranty to include the E74 fault the conspiracy BS is a busted flush and all that’s left is for some folks to pretend that E74 is a much bigger deal, just like RROD.
More BS.
Besides, Microsoft must have gotten the Xbox right a while back.
Both my Falcon Xboxes have been flawless……as well as being outstanding bargains and providing me and mine with hours and hours of fun.

Well, it is public knowledge that all red RE5 Elites are Jasper units but if you don’t believe that then you have to look through the little ‘window’ on the side of the box and see the lower amp rating.
Falcons are rated @ 175w & 14.2 amps
Jaspers are rated @ 150w & 12.1 amps
……and I’m dying to hear where you guys get that BS that the Falcon units are suspect.

I must admit it surprised me.
I didn’t think they’d bother going to the epxense of making 2 distinct mobos.
I guess it’s only a matter of having the robot whizz over the mobo and soldering in the chipset or not and makes little odds.
If you fit a HDD to your Jasper Arcade I believe it will ask you where you want to store saves etc every time but that’s about the only difference.

Er, no. I did not post this story and I have never posted a PS3 bashing story anywhere.
I never once said “the issue magically ‘never happened’.”
Clearly there has been a problem – but they have moved very quickly on this one
(and for those whinging about the supposed delay in offering the 3yr warranty, you’d hardly expect them just to offer one without researching the problem would you?
At least they did afterall extend the warranty to include every Xbox 360 made once they did start it off).
The point is that here they responded very quickly and properly – and this stands in stark contrast to how certain other manufacturers have behaved when their products had problems.
You’ll also find I never once denied that the RROD was a “fuck up”.
Of course it was.
I agree it would be better if they had created a unit without any faults ever occurring…..but then no-one has ever managed that.
Should the Xbox have been better from the start?
Of course.
But it wasn’t and so we are left with the ‘what now’ options.
Here Microsoft have behaved extremely well, setting an industry leading bench-mark (the 3yrs warranty).
Again this is in stark contrast to how certain other manufacturers have behaved.
I have absolutely xzero worries firing up my Falcon Elite.
I know that it is covered for 3yrs and that with the Falcon reliability rates shot up.

HH – 45% was a number I pulled from my butt. It was 68% at one point, but I’m sure they have probably got it down to about 40% by now.

Thats seriously all I wanted. Acknowledgement that both issues were/are fuckups. But yes, both have been dealt with by the way of extended warranty.
I guess you can call it industry leading, if you’re talking about video games. I’m not so sure about electroncs in general tho. HP for example has some veeeery long service notes on thier notebooks and printers.

Happy, they still had to FRONT the money..but yes its good that they refunded them. So no, it wasn’t an epic fail, they still had to front the money and wait, probably a couple WEEKS if not MONTHS for their refund, thats just how those things go

It is kind of sad that people who do not even own the console love to attack it so much. I guess we can only truly speak for ourselves and our own experience, and I know that I am happy to still have my launch day 360 playing both games and movies for hours every day well into it’s fourth year of present-gen gaming (one year longer than PS3), with achievements across every game, live chat, Netflix streaming (at no extra charge to what I was paying for Netflix before – essentially free to me, as I already had Gold for about $3/mo), and backwards compatible games being added to the console instead of the function completely taken out of it. It really is a quality gaming experience. Ah well, back to Fallout 3.

Nice to see Microsoft is covering this shit my Xbox 360 Arcade freezes hopefully Microsoft will fix that too before it becomes another massive failure rate like e74 and red ring of death. I’m so glad my 2 PS3 are working perfectly even though i use them 24/7 it a hot run. Sony should get a Gold Trophy for making the PLAYSTATION 3 so fucking damn perfect.

An E74 error is when the lower-right quadrant of the ring-piece indicator flashes red and displays an error message in multiple languages: “E74 System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support”. The error is caused when there’s a video problem, either because the audio/video cable is broken or when the Xbox 360 hardware scaler chip is damaged. As of April 14, 2009, the E74 error is now covered by the 3-year extended warranty, and customers who paid to repair the E74 error will receive a refund.

I find it so funny that people will put down Microsoft for it’s failures when Microsoft is responsible for all the advances on the PS3. If Microsoft never came along with innovation then we would be stuck with just upping the graphics of each generation of consoles from 8 Bit to 16 bit the 32 Bit to 64 Bit to where ever we are now. I’ll give Sony credit for the change from Cartridge to Disk but that is all Sony has ever innovated on, a disk format. Microsoft has taken the console to a new height and everyone is benefiting in some way on every console in this generation. Even Nintendo has innovated and is a contributor to gaming advancement even before Microsoft was around. Happy and Kev have been right all along because the PS2 Disk read error was a hugh problem that Sony fans love to ignore but are quick to judge Microsoft for it’s errors and not praise them for recognizing these problem and standing behind the console with the 3 year warrenty. Even when the 360 goes down it’s a 1-2 week downtime and that is faster then it takes PS3 to produce a game which takes 2-3 year to produce. The ignorance of you PS3 People is very laughable because if there was ever a time that Sony has been exposed for ignoring it’s customer and having bad business practices, it’s in this generation. But yes, now that Rio is back (and what a difference he made to the side tonight) I think the recent drop in form will be reversed.

Well that’s what they did.
They not only gave every Xbox 360 the warranty (the whole point of going to 3yrs so that every single one of them was covered from the 1st made) but they have indeed altered the parts to produce a much more reliable unit.
The problem is that despite the myths not even all the very first Xboxes have been effected.
Obviously the original Xenon board was the worst offender
(but like Harry says there are quite a few launch Xenon owners still enjoying their reliable examples).
Next up was the Zephyr board, this did feature new parts (HDMI & a new & much better heat pipe arrangement) but was only a step towards the kind of reliability they ought to have had from the start.
You’ll also find there’s a mobo referred to as ‘Opus’, this is basically the later Falcon mobo but without HDMI to replace those sending the original non-HDMI Xenon unit in for repair.
They are indeed swapping them out for better units.
Then there is the Falcon.
The Falcon has the 65nm (cooler running & more energy efficient) CPU and an 80nm GPU & RAM (down from the original model’s 90nm die).
Falcon is a much much more reliable unit.
In fact this is the unit that stopped those tales about game stores moaning about returns.
Lastly we have Jasper with 65nm CPU & GPU. This unit retains a lot of the heatsink stuff in the Falcon.
Although many people assume that Jasper is all about ‘ending RROD’ there are a lot of others who say that Falcon saw that job done and that Jasper is about reduced costs with new smaller cheaper GPUs etc.
Falcon & Jasper look very similar under the skin.
The next mobo due at the end of this year or early next is ‘Valhalla’.
This will see a move to a single (SoC – system/solution on chip) chip which will see the die size shrink again to 45nm (even cooler running and more energy efficient and cheaper to manufacture).
Some expect this SKU to be the ’slim’ Xbox.

i mean sure if its broke they fix it… but surely everyone with those early ones MS would want back so it could end the problem all together… and MS didnt put new parts in my one… hence the whole reason i sold it… it just put in “fixed” parts… i opened up and looked… it almost looked like the same thing sept with this sorta band thing on it… thats y i rang MS and they said they cant promise it wont happen again or even give me a time frame as to how long it’ll last…and also why has it taken 5 chipsets as you’ve named there to get it right? if this was the orginal xbox… yeah maybe it could be forgiven given it was there first real try… but this is there second dig at it?
and i thought the DRE from ps2 where from over use where playstation hadn’t tested the life of the laser?… mine went after 6 years and trust me… ALOT of use… we just went out and bought a slim when it went.

Okay bigmickyd, let me get this straight… Microsoft fixed your 360 free of charge… and then you sold it because they could not guarantee it would not have problems at any time in the future? Sorry, but I don’t think anybody offers a lifetime guarantee in the biz… best they can do is fix it if something goes wrong, like Sony did with Ivan’s PS3.
SW: Well, personally over the next couple of months I will probably be playing Fallout 3 DLC including Broken Steel, then Fable 2 and it’s DLC, then RE5, Lost and the Damned, maybe some Lost Odyssey and Star Ocean, Left 4 Dead, then GameFly and on to Call of Juarez, Arkham Asylum, Terminator, Star Trek, Prototype, Ghostbusters, and Red Faction. From what I understand this is a pretty slow time of year, but I think I have more than enough to keep me busy in the near future.

no no not a life time guarantee… i just wanted to be assured that the same problem was going to happen the next week as when i started to research it, it was happening multiple times to people, they told me that they had put a re-ferb in my machine… not a new chip set… to which i said the problem could just happen again as soon as i turn it on, to which she went on with some mumbo jumbo that mircosoft can no longer guarantee any sort of life time for the chipsets… that right there was when i said thank you… hung up, went to game traded in the 360 for more games for my ps3… i liked the 360 but im happy with the choice i made… ull also notice i dont bag out the 360ers here… just kev/CAD/CON cause there well… there “its”… i just have a problem with the way MS delt with things

Well for Xbox 360 it might be better for Microsoft to give you a lifetime contract that expires when they make the next console if they do.
Ghostbusters is own by Sony but is for all consoles. Fable 2 is boring too much Lost Odyssey is lame plus 4 disc Left4Dead is average.

Wow Ivan, you actually played through all those games? I’m impressed. Did you get bored with your PS3 and decided to play all those games? Doom is a good game, but I thought that was Id not Microsoft?
That would be great if we could get a lifetime guarantee on our consoles (all brands)… but if we had a lifetime contract instead that expired when the next console came out, the big three would have to send out hitmen to seal the deal… how well does your hack play w/Live, updates, and such?

HH: some might argue (perhaps successfully) that 30 something is not much younger than 40 something. With the average western life expectancy about to reach 80, perhaps we should all be seeking ways to be retain youth, not discriminate against it.

yep… still loving those “shooters” like Fable II, Mass Effect, Dead Rising, Fallout 3 DLC, GTAIV DLC, etc. and could care less about sackboy or snake, drake, ratchet, or a shooter modeled upon Gears of War. Now what does pique my interest is God of War, but when is that going to release? And what will it be… like 8 hours? Sorry, but I am not going to spend $460 for 8 hours, especially when the console I spend that money on will not play my existing library. The fact is 360 has more quality games than PS3 in almost every genre (who cares whether or not this is because of a year head start? The fact still remains). This may change in the future, but by that time PS3 should have had a significant price drop and bc put back in. But at that point I won’t really care because we will probably be moving on to the next gen.

Ivan, I just said what I was personally looking forward to playing (in response to SW) that happens to be on 360. I didn’t go all fanboy and try to determine which games were “exclusive” and which were not because I only care that they are games (or game content – like Broken Steel) that I am interested in. So what… you don’t play multiplatform games… or do you just think they are not worth mentioning? I never said they were exclusive.
I never “settled” for XBox 360, I got it because PS3 didn’t even exist when it came out and I wanted to be playing next gen games at the start of the next gen, not one year later.

I don’t buy anything from Xbox Live i might get the GTA IV DLC. I think Gears of War was good but only in story even if it was extremely short. I only got Halo 1 and 2 i hate RPG but i do own FF 7 8 10 and KH 1 2. Fable 2 i was really hoping to like it but i don’t really like it much. I’m not a racing guy either i do own every Gran Turismo well except the PS3 version too much for too little. Fallout 3 i won’t play because the developer are bitches hating on PS3 leaving them out that’s way too cold. As for Left4Dead i will say one thing a must buy for Xbox Live members.
I love my original Xbox. I adore my PS2 since i cannot stop playing SOCOM 2 is the most addictive i got years playing it like 5.
I talk too much LoL. The confusing shit is to change theme and search for games online idk i just think is confusing. And it feels clutter to many stuff.
And why in the RED hell can i not save video music or even photo from my PSP or flash drive.

Just on a side note here, did anyone else find that L4D burnt out really fast?
I played it a few times on PC with some buddies, and I found that MP, while unique, kinda gets a little boring…
Maybe its just me. (I think as i get older, games are starting to wow me less, it sucks…)
Oh I should say that the Zombie Bile effect of being swarmed by NPC’s is damn cool tho (just the sheer amount and yet no slow down).

SW, I haven’t played it yet, but I know what you are talking about, which is one of the main reasons I am going back to GameFly soon (I bought Ultimate Genesis Collection and Fallout 3, will borrow Fable 2 from the neighbor, then start renting again). The cost ($60-$70 for around 8 hours on most) just isn’t worth the time for the majority of games, especially when you could be paying a flat $15/mo fee for as much as you can play instead.

Lite Brite was a toy of the 80s, which was a blank “canvas” of empty light sockets. It came with many colored bulbs to arrange into a picture of your own design, with a resolution (hah!) of about 50 x 80, though perhaps less.
It was a joke from my old EverQuest days, when someone played from a shit computer that would lag them out, or cause huge loading times, we would say shit like, “their lite brite is on the fritz again” or something to that effect.
I used it here as a metaphor for Ivan juvenile style, which admittedly, has improved in the past few days.
