Gran Turismo 5 details and release date revealed… cryptically

Gran Turismo 5 details and release date revealed... crypticallyGran Turismo 5 – along with God of War III regarded as the main system-sellers yet to appear on the PS3. And yet it’s still nowhere to be seen. But maybe, just maybe, a rather obscure and cryptic message on a GT forum has given the game away, so to speak.

To say we’ve been waiting a while for Gran Turismo 5 would be a slight understatement. The PS3 has been out almost two-and-a-half-years now. It’s also been four years since the last GT game, Gran Turismo 4, was released. Even GT5 Prologue has been out over a year. And still there’s no sign of any official announcement regarding when the fifth game in the series will be released or any details about the cars, tracks, etc.

Kazunori Yamauchi and his team at Polyphony Digital have already worked on the game for an age but it’s obviously still not close to being ready for release. Unfortunately. I know Yamauchi is a perfectionist, but come on, surely no game takes this long to get right, however accurate and close to real life it wants to be.

Some information about the game and its release date could have been revealed though. A poster on the GTPlanet forum by the name of amar212 posted a cryptic message that may tell us a lot more than we currently know. The number of cars, the number of tracks, multiplayer options, and the release date are all there if you look hard enough.

Fact 1 – The release “will happen thirty nights before twelve months pass.” This indicates either a release date of December 1, 2009 or March, 2010. Both are possible although the former seems more likely in order for the game to be out before Christmas. March, 2010 is also when God of War III is expected to arrive.

Fact 2 – There will be “more than half of dozen hundreds birds” and “almost eight dozen of skypaths.” So, 500 cars plus and close to 96 tracks available to race on. Also, “new skypaths will be built by birdtamers from the parts of existing skypaths.” Suggesting that new courses can be created from already-existing ones.

Fact 3 – “Birdtamers will reunite in numbers greater than ever and will be granted with ability to talk to each other, make guilds and alliances with undisputed freedom.” More players online together than ever before with a much-improved lobby systems and clans etc.

Fact 4 – The “reunion will happen in two forms, one greater than other and birdtamers will have freedom to decide which reunion they will attend.” This would seem to imply that the game will be sold in two forms, one full-priced but with all features and future DLC included in the price, and the other cheaper but with some features missing and DLC costing extra.

Fact 5 – A “different reunion but almost the same as known one, smaller only for the eyes of those who do not want to see it in its whole glory.” A version of Gran Turismo 5 on another console – surely the PSP.

Go and read the full forum thread for more in-depth analysis of what each clue means but most are pretty clear in their intended meaning. This has to go down as rumor rather than fact at this point but the forum poster has a good track record for breaking stories. I guess we’ll find out for sure at E3 2009. Fingers crossed.

Those Killzone 2 sales figure are really good for just 2 months.

Rockstar Games made Chinatown Wars look so dated i personally think GTA should continue only PlayStation and PC.

  6. bigmickyd:

you guys really believe this? birdtamers, birds and skypaths?

the numbers hes put up are whats been pretty much spread around the net for a rather long time, PP never give out details till it is basicly on the shelfs… to which we will more then likely get an update at E3.. if not a date… its been a long time coming, but like the other 4… they where more then worth it once you put that magical cd into thy playstation

  7. JofaMang:

I enjoy any decent racing game, and I like arcade racers (Motorstorm 1 &2, NFS series, I even played Forza a few times and really enjoyed it) but the king of racing simulators is what I yearn for, and the arcade racers just fill the time between the GTs. And FUCK is there a lot of time between them. :(

Man, I hope the importing of licenses and money/cars from gt5p counts toward trophies… it took me weeks to get all the golds :(

  8. JofaMang:

If the dude has a track record of interpretations of his cryptic messages being accurate, then I think its ok to have a news piece about, us fans have been waiting patiently for any morsel of information out there.

  9. bigmickyd:

and the forza thing was a joke at CON

see what i mean bout the 30s?

  13. lock_down:

I bought Prologue the other day and think it’s a really solid game; the in-car cockpit cam is brilliant and the cars now feel really, really weighty.

    Just need damage now…

  14. JofaMang:

Yeah, the in car view is awesome, and the only way I play now. Perhaps PD will add in sixaxis perspective control for glancing to the left and right. The mirrors are so accurate that there are real blind spots, and being able to shoulder check a little bit might be a cool trick.

My wife isn’t a fan of racing games in general, be even her jaw dropped when she saw the game, and was hounding me to get more cars so she could see what the interiors looked like, lol.

  15. CarlB:

35 Mick. I’ve never been a fan of racing games… more rpg’s and stuff similar to god of war, RE, or GTA… but I could definitely see how a racing fan could get into this. I do race a little bit in my 2003 SRT4 though… I like showing up people who do not know how to drive their STi/Evo (that cost them at least $15,000 more), and especially loud ass Mustangs as I watch the driver’s faces in the rear view.

  16. JofaMang:

The only way to even match an srt-4 in an Sti or Evo is very abusive clutch burning high rev launchs. Stuff even the magazines admit to doing very rarely, only as often as is needed to get what they consider a decent launch.

  17. lock_down:

Jofa, I always use that view, but it’s ironic that even though the in car view is technically more visually restrictive than the traditional “all road” or “behind the car” view, the in car view just feels so natural.

I’m not sure about sixaxis though, I’d rather have the ability to the move in car camera forward or backward, and the ability to alter and align the interior and exterior mirrors.

  18. JofaMang:

Yeah, it is far more restrictive, but it feels right. Might have something to do with the first person viewpoint being where a persons eyes would be in a real car. So if someone (like many of us, I am sure) has some experience hot footing it on the streets, this view might be the very most realistic pov possible.

I thought I remember something about driver customization. Perhaps you get to chose the height of your driver, thus adjusting some of those parameters.

  19. CarlB:

Really Jofa? I never even heard that… you do know that I am talking about a 2003 SRT-4 $19,000 Neon right? It doesn’t even have four wheel drive or lsd…

  20. CarlB:

The fastest time I have seen for it 0-60 is 5.3 seconds… whereas the Sti 0-60 came in at 4.6 and Evo at 5… back then at least… now I hear the ‘09 WRX (not Sti) comes in at 4.7… amazing… but still five grand more and less mpg than my six year old car.

  21. JofaMang:

Yup, I am kind of a car nut.

This is true for “lower” horsepower sports cars. Not to say the srt-4 is slow, because it isn’t, but things change when you start heading north of 300-350hp:

The fact that you don’t have all wheel drive is what helps you. By having only one axle to power, the srt-4 can launch and maintain revs through controlled tirespin. By keeping the revs higher, you avoid bogging the engine down and dropping into the lower torque range of the motor, and with 2wd, it isn’t very hard on the clutch. As soon as the tires break loose, the clutch is hooked up and not comprimised at all. This means the best launchs are generally at a lower rev, again, reducing the wear and tear on the clutch.

With AWD cars in the same horsepower range (and not counting luxo awd like audis), the torque is split between the axles at launch. This means two possibilitys: launch at a lower RPM, and feed in the power after the clutch is fully hooked up, or rev the piss out of it and dump the clutch.

With the first option, the launch is slow, as the engine has to run through the lowest torque range of the motor before it can get into the boost and hit max acceleration, since there is no tirespin.

With the second option, high revs and a dumped clutch is required to break all 4 tires loose, thus keeping revs higher into the torque range. This method will achieve the best acceleration for this range of vehicles, but the trade off is that the abuse is loaded onto the clutch and the AWD. Fast, but destructive.

(with higher HP awd cars, there is enough torque at lower RPMs to achieve a wheelspin launch, but the best launches will still be high RPM clutch dumps, less destructive with enough power to break the tires loose, and less harm to the clutch)

On top of all of this, the SRT-4 is a marvel of turbo-4 bangers: It has tremendous low end torque, decently high redline (5800rpm or so iirc) and very little turbo lag. The stock 245hp rating is considered by most to be underrated, and closer to 255-260. The mopar upgrade kits for it are relatively cheap, and give HUGE power upgrades, designed by dodge to be handled by the rest of the drivetrain. I believe the top kit will put the engine to over 320hp.

Of course at that point, you’d probably experience severe torque steer at stopped and rolling launches without an LSD, and a fair amount even with it.

  22. JofaMang:

Heh, you posted while I was writing the essay: I have read that non abusive launches on the STi and the new WRX raise the 0-60 often to above 6.0 seconds. Whereas your srt-4 can achieve 5.3 to 60 all day long without too much concern, and sti breaking 5 seconds to 60 repeatedly will break the car in short order.

  23. CAD:

    bigmickyd

No I don’t play Forza. Does the statement “I only like arcade racers” not make this obvious.

  24. jojo29:

    Jofa, bravo :)

I myself drive a 95 Eclipse GS-T, got the turbo upgrades, exhaust etc…brought my 183 HP to the wheels car up to 320 HP to the wheels :) I agree, when i first started hitting even the 280-90ish range, it was time for an LSD…nothing sadder than all that HP wasted on spinning tires :)

  25. jojo29:

oh yeah, the SRT Neons are to be “respected”…but then, so are DSMs :)

  26. bigmickyd:

CAD, even you didn’t get the joke between you saying that your a “arcade racer” and me saying “oh so you play forza then?” then dw :)

  27. Barnabe Jones:

    I’m 28 years young…

My bet is it will be officially announced at E3 for December. GOW II is coming next year in March, so this will be Sony’s big holiday title this year.

Day one purchase for me. 500 cars, 96 customizable tracks, perhaps user generated tracks too… I’m so there. I’m getting tied of FPS games… so this and Infamous, White Knight, and Uncharted II are just what the doctor ordered.

  28. Royzy:

    I’m 19. I can’t believe I signed in just to say that.

  29. CarlB:

You mean God of War III right Barnabe? Or are you talking about the rumored blu-ray (another way to cash in on full bc being taken out) release of I&II?

  30. Arvis:

    1) GT5:P in-car view is the greatest thing to happen to the series. The whole series is not so much about just racing, but about really EXPERIENCING these amazing machines. And now, being able to experience the interior, as well as the exterior… simply incredible.

    2) Carl, you OWN an SRT4?? That’s AWESOME! I drive an ‘02 Neon SXT because I’m a poor wannabe like that. :D

    -Arvis

  31. CarlB:

Arvis (borat accent), HIGH FIVE! Are you kidding, that thing gets great mileage and you probably have it PAID for right? I sometimes regret getting rid of my ‘95 Ford Focus “Sport” (ahaaa!)… it was paid for and I still see it on the road (the same one!) when I visit 29 Palms sometimes, would have saved me 19 grand. It was worth it, but I sometimes regret it as I could have had the HELOC paid off and probably only a year left on the 1st house by now… oh well, I’ve had this one paid for for some years now and plan on keeping it awhile until those 4 second EV’s become affordable (I hear 2013). So have you put anything into it? I have seen quite a few articles where they made it faster than a stock SRT4 (mine is still stock)… Don’t knock the poor wannabe status, it keeps you real, is a great starting point, and makes you more grateful for the things you get in the future.

  32. Arvis:

Yeah man, it’s definitely the best car I’ve ever owned (25 years old and it’s my 4th car… *sigh*). I just mean I won’t be winning any races any time soon (132hp, ftw).

I have ZERO expendable income, so I haven’t done jack to the car. I put a higher end air filter and much better spark plugs in, so it’s smoother on acceleration than when I first got it, but no big changes under the hood.

And actually, yes, as of a few months ago, the car is officially mine and not the bank’s. =D
    It’s a great feeling.

    -Arvis

  33. darkwhitehair:

Arvis… you should look at all the previews for NFS Shift… the in car camera looks awesome.. youd like it

  34. CarlB:

Congrats Arvis, I suggest keep it to 200 grand in miles at least. What a feeling.
