Apparently Sony doesn’t care about selling games on PS3

April 22, 2009

Apparently Sony doesn't care about selling games on PS3 Sony currently has more internal studios than Microsoft and Nintendo combined. There is little doubt that Sony spends a ton of money on building its in-house development studios. However, according to an ex-Sony employee it seems like Sony may not really care about selling a lot of first party games all that much.

Of course Sony cares about selling first party games to a certain degree, but the company may not care if its internally developed games do not sell a gazillion units. David Jaffe, the man best known for God of War and Twisted Metal dropped some hints as to why he loves working with Sony on first-party development.

Apparently, Sony has a long term view of games and its purpose. According to Jaffe, internally developed games are created to bolster the PS3′s lineup as well as adding value to the system. This allows developers a certain degree of freedom not found with any other publisher out there. He gives examples of how games like LittleBigPlanet would have never been green-lit by another publisher due to the high risk involved.

This may explain Sony’s refusal to spend the big bucks like Microsoft on much needed marketing. Microsoft reportedly spent $20 to $30 million on Halo 3′s marketing campaign, which is about the cost of development of the actual game. Sony seems to develop games for the same reason supermarkets carry baby food. Selling baby food is a break even business, but supermarkets still carry it to bolster inventory.

This approach may be working over in Europe and Japan, but it sure isn’t doing much within the U.S. I have a feeling that the price of the PS3 might be the real bottleneck rather than game library. One thing is for sure, Microsoft’s approach to spending an inordinate amount of money on marketing actually seems to not only sell games but consoles as well.

Yeah been here before….. Price and marketing is the killer. If they lowered the retail cost to 400 au dollars and marketed properly, the sales numbers would be greatly different, not that I care about sales figures (but for the sake of the discussion).

  2. phranctoast:

dammit jaffe. Just give some info on the upcoming twisted metal game. I don’t want to wait until e3.

  3. lock_down:

Wait until E3 you must phranc….probably.

Is it too early to stoke up E3? Nah.

I’m really looking forward to Sony’s conference this year…it’s pretty clear Sony’s presentation will be the one to watch this year. Here’s hoping this mystery PS3 exclusive gets unveiled :)

I’m still going with FF VII remake.

Um… somebody better tell Sony that there attache rate is steadily climbing then. It’s no surprise but they managed to over take the Wii’s massive install base.

  5. Happyhockum:

    Barnabe Jones

    LMAO

    You clutching at straws, again.

First of all it’s a really tiny & minute ‘advantage’ – except with the Wii’s sales numbers it’s no real advantage for Sony & their PS3 at all.

Basically you’re holding up attachment rates, again.

If overall console sales were close it might mean jack s., but they’re nothing even remotely close to being close so it doesn’t.

    Put it like this.

If Wii has sold 1 million units and everyone with one buys 2 games (2million games sold)
then how much of a damn do you imagine game devs would give if PS3 has sold 100,000 units and sold 2.1 games per unit sold?
    (you do the maths)

When the gap is so large this sort of claim is pointless.

  6. CAD:

Wow I was just reading about PSP’s piracy problems. 50 Million PSP have been hacked. What kind of money do they expect to make? 3rd parties don’t even support it because of that. No wonder Sony hasn’t been supporting the device. I’m afraid their efforts this year will be a waste of money. It’s time to kill the PSP and get on with the PSP2 or the Iphone.

  7. CarlB:

Agreed, the Wii is currently blowing away all others in software sales regardless of the attach rates because of the truly massive amount of consoles they have sold to date.

I did find it funny how they didn’t even mention the 360′s clear lead throughout in the linked article (is it just me or is that Kotaku in general?). And yes, the sales gap still makes it pointless when comparing between Wii and 360/PS3… unless you have a developer/publisher that wants to make/bring an adult game out, which doesn’t usually do very well on the Wii in comparison to 360/PS3. So then you compare the 360 and PS3…

  8. ncaissie:

I’m sure Sony cares about selling games.
    What a stupid statement.

Anyone who would spend hundreds of dollars on a consol and only buy a couple of games is a flippin idiot.

I think there are a lot of companies that get the Wii just for Wii Sports and Wii Fit. (Like old age homes)

Well I guess that sums up the PS3 People.

Sony does care about selling games.

    CAD:
You just a bitter fanboy jealous that you don’t have a PS3 yet so shut the fuck up already.

Xbox 360 is just like PSP but bigger for hacking i got so many Xbox 1 games is insane. Unlike Microsoft Sony stop piracy with PSP-3000. Microsoft still hasn’t stop the failure or piracy problems.

“This may explain Sony’s refusal to spend the big bucks like Microsoft on much needed marketing. Microsoft reportedly spent $20 to $30 million on Halo 3’s marketing campaign, which is about the cost of development of the actual game.”

“Today, the average PS3 game is estimated to cost $15 million to develop.”

    digitalspy.com/gaming/a82352/halo-3-cost-gbp15-million-to-develop.html

Killzone 2 is reported to have cost $30 to $60 million to develop alone. Considering Sony now matches developer budgets in return for exclusivity, and the money they are still not making for every PS3 sold, this hardly leaves room for a big budget marketing campaign, though I imagine they will still spend $10-$20 million to market this game.

With Halo 3 there was an immediate return on day one, grossing $170 million, the most of any entertainment product, in spite of massive piracy. Massive game awareness, a previous fanbase worldwide, annual international Halo competitions, and 820,000 participants spending more than 12 million hours playing online in the beta didn’t hurt either.

Sony would love to have their own Halo 3 intead of just “baby food”, they just are not in a very good position right now to have it. Killzone 2 could be the equivalent of a Halo 1, but there is a long way to go to see how it all pans out, and Sony has already stated they are looking long term, so this bodes well for their future.

Shut up already no cares about your crap.

HALO is one the worst FPS ever made pure hype and let down. Halo 1 sucks just like the rest.

  15. lock_down:

Well, Sony do have their own Halo in the form of Gran Turismo; though kev says GT is a niche game so I guess it doesn’t count.

  16. CarlB:

I have been seeing a lot of ads and stuff for God of War III though.

  17. CarlB:

Ivan, I just said the Killzone series could be as successful for Sony as Halo is for Microsoft if Sony played their cards right in the future, what is so bad about that?

  18. kev:

lockdown – no GT game has ever come close to halo’s single day sales record. sony has no “halo”…. the “50 million GT games” you keep bragging about is silly as it took them many, many different GT games to hit it… and on the back of “150 million ps users”, that sony likes to brag about.

the reality is; the first killzone was hyped to be a “halo killer” and it failed.
the second one came closer, but still no cigar…

Ivan – saying halo sucks is really showing just how desperate you are. the reviews rate it high, the sales are through the roof and it’s still one of the highest played games on xbox live.

when people ask me why i don’t own a ps3, i point to your posts….

  19. lock_down:

And no Halo game has come close to Gran Turismo’s sales record which stands at 14.89 million.

The Xbox Fanboy Flaming Baton has been passed to CAD, for the bitterest comment.

Whatever GT sold on the PS1, the numbers must of been pretty fucking amazing at the time though. I don’t know what numbers Halo or GT sold, but it is all relative to the time/generation too.

Are you seriously backing up this nonsense that a games sales are now to be judged on the back of several same-brand consoles and not per each one!?

… on a side note, if anybody wants to have their PS3 or 360 play extra media, go ahead and try out PlayOn for free. All you need is a high-speed broadband connection and a computer (I use my wi-fi laptop) server. The service includes Amazon VoD (beta), CBS, CNN, ESPN, Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube. There is a one-time $40 purchase at the end of the 14 day trial if you decide to keep the program. This works out well for me because I do not want to pay for cable tv, and it makes a nice supplement to the Netflix that is already on the 360. The video quality is not as good as the Netflix on 360, but if you have a PS3 only it is a nice add on.

Wow, now there is a random way off topic post if I have ever seen one! But yeah, I have been watching quite a bit of movies off my 360 lately as well. The quality is not half bad at all. Is Netflix built right into Live? I have been watching movies from the Video Marketplace, I’m assuming Netflix is something different and you have to sign up for? What pisses me off is that you start a movie, you get busy and have to stop watching. Then if you don’t watch the rest of it 24 hours after you started playback, then you are screwed and can’t play the movie again. WTF is up with that? Sure you can have it for 14 days, but once you hit play, it’s no good after 24 hours. They need to change this, it’s a total ripoff!

complete loss of identity….. oh well, at least sony is getting what they want; reduced game sales. congrats….idiots….

  61. Happyhockum:

kev, Sony execs even admitted the whole ‘trojan horse’ thing, eventually.

They thought they had the next DVD and so bet the whole company on it using their Playstation brand to beat HD DVD
(also btw later admitted rushing Blu-ray to market, unfinished and in an early version – the profile 1.0 & 1.1).

Sadly for them it’s now clear that they spent all that R&D cash and have ended up with just another niche HD format and a PS3 game disc system.
Blu-ray will never be anything like the size of DVD.

Must be a bit of a bummer for them. :)

  62. CarlB:

“have been watching movies from the Video Marketplace, I’m assuming Netflix is something different and you have to sign up for?”

Yes, for about $9/mo you get 1 DVD at a time (or Blu-ray for an extra $2/mo) through the mail fast (usually about 2-3 days after I put the return in the mailbox) and unlimited streaming. This is totally worth it instead of paying for it on XBL/PSN or even renting locally. I usually go through about 9-15 DVD’s a month and about another 9-15 watch instantly movies/shows. This is basically about 30 cents to 50 cents per rental for me. If you live in the states it is definitely worth the free trial at least.

On topic, Sony cares enough about selling software to have invested 30-60 million dollars with Guerilla for Killzone 2, let alone the estimated 10-20 million for it’s marketing. This is probably a similar amount to what will have been spent for God of War III (or Gran Turismo 5) whenever it finally comes out. Even if Sony does not care how well PS3 titles do in sales (they care much more now that they are matching developer costs), developers most certainly do.

This may have been at least part of the reason we see sloppy ports to PS3 which may or may not be patched later to satisfaction (Fallout 3 release – “Sadly, the jagged edges, washed-out lighting, and slightly diminished draw distance of the PS3 release aren’t so easy to dismiss. We also experienced a number of visual bugs on the PS3. Character faces disappeared several times, leaving only eyeballs and hair; limbs on robots went missing; some character models had an odd outline around them as if they were cel-shaded; and the day-to-night transition may cause odd streaks on the screen as you move the camera around. This version doesn’t even offer trophies, whereas the Xbox 360 and PC versions offer Xbox Live/Windows Live achievements.” – gamespot.com/ps3/rpg/fallout3/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary%3Bread-review&page=2 ). Multiplatform developers just may not have invested as much money, time, and or effort in their PS3 ports because they got the impression they wouldn’t sell as well.

LBP as an example of “never been green-lit by another publisher due to the high risk involved” and an example of Sony not caring about selling big numbers is probably not the best ideal here. LBP was marketed and was supposed to be the PS3′s casual champ to bolster PS3 sales to mini-wii levels. It has sold over 2 million copies because of this.

David Jaffe and Eat, Sleep, Play is currently under contract with Sony and getting paid by them for exclusive titles, so what he is saying may be just a little biased. Using his own words, “do I think it’s possible that people try to impress the bosses and paint themselves in a good light by towing the company line? I do. I don’t think that is that big of a leap.”

Besides this, when was the last time he worked for another third-party or first party? Now look at the guy’s reputation as a game developer, and you will see why Sony treats this guy so well. When talking about small titles that may/may not sell that much but still get the green light, Microsoft (Portal, Castle Crashers, Geometry Wars, Braid, Viva Pinata) and Nintendo (anything) would hire this guy in an instant “to bolster their library”. Even EA (Sims, Spore) have done the same with some smaller titles.

Jaffe quote of the day, “Blu Ray is a big deal for Sony and all hands on deck in whatever department you work for to push that agenda.”

  63. phranctoast:

Jaffe at no point should be considered overly biased towards Sony products. He kisses the ass ofgears. He’s a gamer first. Anyone who has ever paid any attention to him would know this.
On his website he rips into the bad hardware quality of the pz3 dev kit. Looks like Sony does make something to compare to the 360. Good thing the consumers don’t get it.

  64. CarlB:

“at no point should be considered overly biased towards Sony products”

No Phranc, not overly biased, but it “may be just a little biased.”

Why is the price such a factor only in the U.S.? Japan has been in a recession for years but they buy a heck of a lot more PS3′s than Xbox 360′s even though the Xbox 360 has more games to suit their style. The recession is hitting Europe as well so why is the PS3 selling well there and not the U.S.? My belief is the Xbox 360 does a better job in NA with it’s games and marketing and brand loyalty is more apparent outside of NA in Europe and especially in Japan for Sony.

As for David Jaffe I listened to his latest spiel and how he thinks what he says actually matters. It doesn’t. He’s another loyalist who’s comfortable working with Sony, that’s it. Same thing with Kojima and the PS3 and Itagaki and the Xbox 360. It has little to do with freedom and the hardware. There are all a certain degree of fanboysim and they should be more concerned with getting their games out to the public than persuading the market for Sony and Microsoft.

I also have to laugh at Jaffe. He takes himself away from big production games like God of War and wants more freedom to make more obscure games like Calling All Cars and now that he’s no longer in the limelight he’s blogging away trying to be more noticeable than Paris Hilton and now apparently will step back in the ring and make a new Twisted Metal game. Yup, so much more developer freedom and wanting to go a different route. It’s about public relations and making money, that’s it.

Apparently you are an idiot who thinks he is a game journalist and can write smart ass articles.
