Sony confident on PS3 plans, committed to ten-year lifespan

April 23, 2009

Sony confident on PS3 plans, committed to ten-year lifespanSony has been the market leader in the games industry for two generations on the spin – its Playstation brand beating all-comers. And now we have the PS3, currently sitting in third place in a market of three and unlikely to improve on its last place anytime soon. Is Sony worried? No, it’s confident and committed.

Sony is having a bit of a crisis generation so far. Its three consoles currently on the market are consistently the bottom three performing consoles in the States and aren’t faring much better in other territories. Is it too late for the company to pull it back? Or is this generation too young to call the winners and losers yet?

Senior vice president of marketing at SCEA, Peter Dille, recently spoke to Gamasutra about a range of topics related to the PS3 and where it’s headed. He first maintained that Sony is confident that its plan for the console for the next year is the right one. But does that mean a price cut is imminent?

We’ve talked about this next year being the most aggressive marketing year in PlayStation’s history. It clearly falls into the ‘we can’t comment on rumor and speculation,’ but we’re confident in our plan, and we’ll just leave it at that.

We’re not going to make a price move for PS3; we’re not going to be packing five free games into a promotional strategy. What I’ve said is that it’s not going to drop in price today.

Not today then, but maybe tomorrow. While I can understand why Sony isn’t dropping the price of the PS3, I’m not alone in thinking it’s something that needs to happen if the PS3 stands any chance of catching the Xbox 360. Sooner rather than later, especially in this struggling economy, could see the Playstation 3 flying off the shelves.

He then once again committed to the ten-year lifespan for the Playstation 3, an aim often repeated by Sony executives but one which is looking less likely as time goes on. Or so it seems. The PS1 did it, the PS2 is doing it, so why can’t the PS3?

I hope that people know by now that we are serious when we talk about 10-year product life cycles. I don’t know; maybe sometimes guys in your business think that it’s spin. If it were spin, you wouldn’t have PS1 and PS2 doing it; we’re the only company that’s ever done it.

So when we say we take a long-term view, we firmly believe that the PS3 will not only be around in 10 years but it’ll be driving the business – driving this industry. I don’t know if our competitors’ platforms will still be viable in 10 years; I do know that the PlayStation 3 will be.

He has a point, but at this time that ten-year lifespan does seem overly-optimistic. Is what we’re seeing an Apple-esque dose of smug arrogance or just a confident air that the market will come round to start appreciating the PS3 more than it currently seems to?

perhaps at E3… $150 price drop in U.S.A ANNNDDDD R2, LBP, MS2 and 2 blu ray movies … i know that would make some ppl go… HHMMMMM

  2. Ivan_PSP:

Sony says ten year plan but it only takes then about 6 for a new console after ten year they stop supporting the console that’s what they did with PS1 and soon PS2, that’s the ten year plan.

I also think a price cut will be good but next year or this November 17… Sony will definitely pass at least the Xbox 360 and maybe the Wii we don’t know yet keeping my hopes up.

Is all business and quality for Sony but people just don’t want to understand the meaning of that word they just understand being cheap aka price cut.

  3. bigmickyd:

the only way that 360 or ps3 will beat Wii in life time sales is if they bring out Wii2 in the next 18 months… if not then neither have a chance if the wii is around for another 3-4 years… i do believe that 2nd on other hand is still up for grabs… and do believe ps3 will win in life time sales only cause 360 will beat ps3 to the punch with a new console… not cause ps3 will out sell it by that much to catch it before that… if MS had any brains they would already be working on the next console in case such a thing starts to happen so they can use that as a drop in number instead of PS3 just winning…

face it… Wii is like a dictatorship or a bad government… to the people who really know whats going on… there aint a real lot we can do to stop it…

  4. CarlB:

Shane already laid it out, “360 will last one day longer than the PS3″. ‘Nuff said.

  5. Bourne:

Although i don’t mind all these Sony related articles, it does kind of take the piss for 360/wii fans, any plans to make microsoft/nintendo articles.

  6. Knighthawk:

    ^
Well there are more Sony articles from what you say and from what I have seen. However it seems that Sony makes for better flame bait on this site. Until that changes you will see more Sony articles! Seriously, majority of the posts here are total flame bait just for hits. Not to put down any of the members, but this site…lets just say it’s not amazing. Only one that will work from work for me! lol

  7. Barnabe Jones:

It drives me crazy the people keep demanding a price cut from Sony. Meanwhile Nintendo manufactures Wiis for $20 a piece and sells them for $250. Go figure.

  8. Happyhockum:

Well thanks for letting us know that Dave.

So it’s ‘2010, the year of the PS3 now is it’?

    That was quick.
Usually we have to wait for the end of the year to come around before they (or you or Mike) admit that obvious idiotic over-blown rhetoric either has turned to sh!te or always was sh!te.

    Ten years of PS3rd.
    Big deal.

  9. Barnabe Jones:

And “New Play control”… means Nintendo isn’t making new games. They are slapping motion controls onto GameCube games. God they’ve really gone to shit this gen.

  10. Barnabe Jones:

Um Happy.. so far Sony has released four times as many exclusive games in ‘09 then the 360 did. And infamous is coming out soon. How is Alan Wake going for you? I thought so. As far as games, so far ‘09 has been the year of the PS3.

  11. lock_down:

Alan Wake will come at E3.

  12. jojo29:

    HappyHockum

For me, every year is the year of the playstation :) For those that still keep saying there are no games on their, no exclusive games, get a clue, go back to halo and let me enjoy my Killzones, Ratchets, heavenly swords, MGS4, while you go back to Halo…i ll play gears, mass effect, etc online on my PC :)

As for the “PS3rd” and “Crapbox” <–i finally used the catch phrases :) catching the Wii’s sales?

Only when their powers combine and they get… Captain Playbox? will that happen

  13. CAD:

I think Barnabe and Ivan live in anoter dimension.

  14. JofaMang:

Console owners who are confident in their purchase, don’t care about sales, as long as their console doesn’t go the way of the dreamcast.

No one can refute that the 360 has few games this year, and the ps3 has hit its stride for exclusives. For GAMERS, not fanbois, the PS3 has a much better lineup this year, and probably next year, too.

I will be expecting CADCONKEV’s “nuh-unh 360 rul3z MS said so!” to follow.

  15. Happyhockum:

    JofaMang

I’me perfectly ‘confident’ about my buying choices, I just laugh at the stream of lies and PR BS Sony pour out every year.

2007, the year of the PS3, er, no, um, 2008 the year of the PS3, ah, no, um, 2009 the year of the PS3…..

…..and now we’re treated to ‘2010, the year of the PS3′.

    Give it a rest.

We weren’t copnvinced any of the last 3 times, now at claim number 4 it’s getting embarrassing.

(oh, and as for Xbox games this year?
You’re going only by game announcements.
Anyone with any sense would wait and see just how close or otherwise it turns out come the end of the year.)

  16. JofaMang:

Anyone with any sense would assume that a console maker would be promoting every AAA title it plans to release in the near future (8 months left in the year) at least to some degree.

You are right though, in that E3 could have some surprises.

As a satisfied PS3 owner, I haven’t needed any PR from sony to know that I have had some fantastic games to play in the past 2 years. I don’t care about Sony PR beyond the fact that they have delivered the games they said they would. I am more than satisfied, and confident that my satisfaction will continue.

  17. jojo29:

Exactly, i believe 2008 was the year of the Playstation, the 360 was beat until the release of Gears…but that is another subjective topic.

My point is, Sony’s “claims” has been on the mark. 2008 saw the release of MGS4/LBP and other exclusive games that set the bar for innovation…hell, as i said, for me, the PS3 has delivered on most if not all of their promises, the “claims of x year” i believe that Sony has finally hits it’s stride in release a constant flow of games. Not including multiplatform games. I mean form the release of MGS4 i haven’t been able to keep up, MGS4 came out, then LBP, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, not including Tomb Raider, then fast forward to this year and we already have Killzone 2, then SF4 and right after RE5…too many games, and half of those are exclusive….

I really believe that Sony has hit it’s stride in terms of release schedules. Took them awhile but they at least have some of their lineup.

As a bonus, i have a pretty good Blu Ray collection going, and thats not even back buying any titles, all the titles i have bought are new releases, except ONE ( 300, i HAD to get that one on BR :) )
Happyhockum, i hope you really are satisfied with your 360, as you seem to LOVE to flame the PS3, even when the news is good for the PS3..not saying PS3 boyz dont do the same, or heck even me at times, but in the end, i really don’t have to miss out on 360 exclusives, because even though MS gets my money on software titles that also come out PC (Gears/Fable/Mass Effect) i feel two things:

    1. Good that i don’t miss out on titles
    2. FANTASTIC i don’t have to be ‘relieved’ that my system has a 3 year warranty because it just might ( actually a “16%”- 33% is a HUGE probably) break on me just by plugging the thing is…

  18. Happyhockum:

    jojo29
“i hope you really are satisfied with your 360, as you seem to LOVE to flame the PS3″

You see, this is the bit I don’t get.
    I’m not “flaming” anyone.
I am calling BS on Sony’s laughable claims but for some reason some of you guys love being fed lies, exaggeration and PR spin.
    Weird.

  19. kev:

great plan, sony… gamers will LOVE the idea of using 2006 hardware into 2016….ooo…teh excitement…

  20. Happyhockum:

I’m doing very well for games this year.

I’ve just had my order confirmation come in & I’m getting the new Call of Duty 5 from my good ol pals @ Littlewoods Direct for £16 delivered!
    ($23.50 US / $32.90 AUS)

    They are having a nice £25 ($36.50 US/ $51.50AUS off promo.

Just for those interested I now have 21 XBox 360 games

  21. phranctoast:

umm kev.. people are still using the ps2.

    and didn’t CarlB say…

“Shane already laid it out, “360 will last one day longer than the PS3″. ‘Nuff said.”

  22. Barnabe Jones:

    360
    - Below average RTS game with the Halo name slapped on it.
    -Ninja Blade (crap)

Upcomming… 3 hour Halo expansion and possibly Alan Fake

    PS3
    -KillZone 2
-MLB 09 (both received critical praise)

Upcoming… Infamous, Heavy Rain, GT5, GOW III, White Knight, Ratchet, MAG, etc

No. I live in the present dimension. You know, the one where M$ pays for timed exclusives and doesn’t have any first party studios. The same dimension where there fans support this and think the 3 year warranty is a good thing.

  23. CON:

That’s all very well and good listing those games barnie but ps3rd users aren’t buying them. You guys hyped killzone beyond believe and it didn’t deliver on sales….simple as.

  24. Happyhockum:

Oh I see, so they only imagine that games coming out from 1st party devs count!?

    Laughable.

This isn’t pokemon you know, I don’t have to collect em all.

  25. CAD:

Happy that was hilarious. It’s so funny that these guys love to tout their horn about games to come and yet there is still better games on the 360 and a whole bunch that have been released already. Anyways I’ll drop a copied list for all to browse.

  26. lock_down:

…and the first game in the list is Alone In The Dark.

No sense of irony at all.

  27. phranctoast:

    LOL @ lock down.

    Gotta love list wars.
I couldn’t help but notice the ammount of games that came out before the ps3 was out and how some aren’t exclusive as they are available for the ps2.

  28. SW:

Hey Mike Ferro, you killed CON’s post in the other thread, destroy CAD’s, I COMMAND THEE!!!oneone (Or at least edit it to say ‘Big honking list of games here was ‘ere’)…

  29. CarlB:

    @Barnabe,

The only game in the PS3’s exclusive roster I vaguely care about to date is Metal Gear Solid 4 (and some PSN PS1 games) and God of War III. And to be fair, if I had a PS3 instead of a 360 the only games/game content I would care about would be Fable 2 (and some XBL DLC: GTA IV, Fallout 3, Fable 2) and Mass Effect.

The majority of Sony’s once exclusive titles that really matter in the grand scheme of things are now multiplat. The fact is that there are over twice as many quality multiplatform titles on either console and there has been enough momentum in sales for either to ensure their success for the rest of this gen. Only a few gamers will get the other console (s) (Wii, PS3, and or 360) and they will do so for only a relatively very few games (the exception may be if one starts off w/Wii, or somebody purchasing all three at once, or just because they have to have all three for the principle).

  30. CarlB:

For the record, their is a lot of crap games in both of those lists CAD.

  31. CAD:

Hey I never said it was perfect as I took it from someone else but it’s just a reflection of the bigger picture.

  32. darkwhitehair:

THE MIGHTY LIST WILL KEEEL YOU ALL!!

umm CAD… beautiful katamari caught my eye… lemme tell you… go ahead and buy the game… go ahead… and play the PS2 version… when you find out that the publisher futt bucks you with DLC… you’ll understand…

that theres no point in this world… only pain and suffering… lemme go put on my eye liner and black lipstick..

  33. Barnabe Jones:

CADCON – I was talking about 2009. Where’s that giant list hm? Oh that’s right, I covered the games already in my post. Point proven, thanks.

  34. Barnabe Jones:

Carl B, When/if you have the chance check out Ratchet, KZ2, WipEout HD, Uncharted,Warhawk & Resistance…. to name a quick few.

  35. Ivan_PSP:

My list catch up sweet. And PLAYSTATION 3 is the winner of the most have system.

    Any new ideas.

How many of you have a hack console?

  36. Barnabe Jones:

Carl, At the risk of spamming let me tell you a quick anecdote to prove my point.

For arguments sake lets say Star Ocean is a timed exclusive. Now I have to wait a year until it’s released. In that year’s time, Sony has released KZ2, Infamous, MAG, Ratchet, White Knight, GT5, and a few others.

In that same year time, you on the other hand may receive another timed exclusive or two. When the year is up and Star Ocean is inevitably released for PS3, I’ll have that timed exclusive as well as the handful of great first party games released in that year.

In all honesty, if Microsoft wants to pay to delay a few PS3 games here and there, it doesn’t really bother me because Sony’s first party games tide me over while I wait. As a PS3 owner it only makes it clear that I don’t need a 360.

Microsoft is short changing there fan base with this practice. If they are going to shell out the money, they might as well buy full exclusivity.

  37. Barnabe Jones:

“and a few others.”…. like GOW III.

You get my point thought, right? I get the timed exclusive plus a ton of true PS3 exclusives. So in the end, as a PS3 owner I end up with more games to choose from.

  38. CarlB:

Sure Barnabe, I get your point… but I don’t think you are getting mine: There is more than enough on either console to keep a gamer busy.

On another note, for those titles you listed, none of them really apply to me as I’m am mainly interested in RPG’s and RTS’s with only a few action/adventure titles in the mix (yeah, yeah Dissidia and Valkyria, I know, but still I have more than enough to keep ME busy, and I know I don’t speak for everybody).

“Ratchet, KZ2, WipEout HD, Uncharted,Warhawk & Resistance….” -None of these pique my interest like God of War III does. Why? Because while they may be quality gaming experiences in and of themselves, to me they really do not offer that much more than what I have already experienced through other games on other consoles, and they are not particularly genres I care greatly about.

My point is, right now there is already more than enough on 360 to keep me busy for a long, long time – there are after all almost 100 more “well reviewed” games in it’s roster than PS3, and I really do not care if they are “new” or because it was due to a “head start”, there are a lot of quality games I have yet to play on the console I own. I also am open minded enough to know the same condition of having more than enough to play for the future may exist for the PS3 owner, which is fine by me.

What I specifically care about with PS3 is when it will have PS2 bc put back in (I do still own a bunch of PS2 games and know my PS2 will not last forever) and when it will inevitably come down in price. This is my own specific situation and I am not saying the PS3 is not worth owning, it is just not right for me at this time and I do not feel like I need or want it at this time. God of War III, PS2 BC, and a significant price drop may change that in the future, but at the same time I foresee a lot of multiplats coming (and yes, even some MS exclusives) to occupy my time enjoyably without spending another $400+ dollars for something I really do not need.

Saying Microsoft 360 is only about timed exclusives is also BS, because you (or anybody for that matter) really doesn’t know what will be released for PS3 in the future that is currently only on 360. Dead Rising is an excellent example of this, along with Condemned: Criminal Origins, Saint’s Row and a few others. Again, I am not saying this means 360 is superior to PS3, it just means I have more than enough games (let alone DLC) to play through to keep me busy until the next ones come out, both multiplat and exclusive.
